BMW X5 engine, characteristics of third generation BMW X5 engines. General technical characteristics Technical characteristics of BMW X5 cars

BMW X5 is one of the first premium SUVs. The Bavarian company, despite the lack of experience in creating SUVs, decided in the mid-90s of the twentieth century to invest in a new segment for itself, considering its enormous potential. As subsequent years showed, this was the right move. After the X5 model, X3, X6, X1 and most recently X4 appeared.

It all started with the BMW X5 E53 series, introduced in 1999. The car quickly attracted the attention of wealthy clients. The SUV captivated us with its excellent dynamics, excellent handling on the highway and excellent suitability for everyday life.

Despite the fact that two decades have passed since the appearance of this model, many copies are not cheap at all. Even the very first samples in decent condition cost at least 500,000 rubles, and this is only 100,000 rubles less than the mega popular Kia Rio or Hyundai Solaris. But, on the other hand, the new BMW X5, albeit of a different one - the third generation, costs almost 7 times more! However, we are dealing with a car that offers much more than other crossovers.

Design features

The BMW X5 is the complete opposite of the imposing Volvo XC90, which rolls in turns like a sailboat in the wind. The German SUV is stable thanks not only to the perfect design of the multi-link suspension, but also due to the efficient operation of the all-wheel drive system. Before restyling in 2003, all wheels had permanent all-wheel drive and a central differential. This transmission is great on the highway, but is helpless off-road, as it is completely devoid of classic differential locks. The locking function is assigned to the brake system, which slows down the slipping wheel.

The “combat potential” of the car is also significantly limited by low ground clearance. As standard it is 176 mm. In the version with controlled air suspension, the ground clearance can only be increased to 235 mm, while the Mercedes ML could raise the body to 300 mm.

Interior condition at 340,000 km.

In addition, wide tires and a self-supporting body are further confirmation that the X5 was not intended for off-road use. His element is asphalt. However, this is where most modern SUVs live.

During restyling, the German SUV received a more interesting all-wheel drive system - intelligent xDrive. It is much better suited for forced overcoming difficult areas.

Engines and gearboxes

The first BMW X5s were equipped only with gasoline engines: 3.0 l / 231 hp. (M54B30) and 4.4 l / 286 hp. (M62B44TU). Not surprising, since the crossover was primarily intended for the American market.

It soon became clear that the BMW X5 fully corresponds to the tastes of Europeans. In 2000, a 3-liter inline six-cylinder turbodiesel with 184 hp was offered for them. (M57D30), which consumes an average of 10-11 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km.

In 2002, the engine range was supplemented by a 4.6-liter/347 hp 8-cylinder petrol engine. (M62B46).

The 4.4-liter M62 unit was equipped with a Vanos variable valve timing system (additional designation TU). The most common ailments: high oil consumption, problems with the crankcase ventilation system and malfunctions of the variable valve timing system (vanos).

The most widespread were the X5 with the 3-liter inline six M54. The engine has an electronic throttle body, an aluminum block and variable valve timing on both camshafts. The only serious problem with the engine is related to the design of the crankcase ventilation system. The valve becomes clogged with sludge quite quickly. Mechanics recommend updating it every 2-3 oil changes.

After the September restyling of 2003, the 6-cylinder turbodiesel was modernized. Its power increased to 218 hp. (M57D30TU). The 8-cylinder 4.4 increased its power to 320 hp. (N62B44).

In 2004, the top-end X5 4.8is was released with the eight-cylinder N62B48, which offered 360 hp. and 500 Nm of torque.

Cars with a diesel engine under the hood accelerate quite impressively. In this they are not much inferior to versions with a 4.4-liter block. But the BMW X5 with top-end petrol V8 - 4.6 is / 347 hp - can deliver the most emotions. and 4.8 is / 360 hp (since late 2003). The most powerful of them accelerates the SUV to “hundreds” in just 6.1 seconds and allows it to reach a top speed of 246 km/h.

Transmission

Before restyling, the diesel engine was coupled with a GM 5-speed automatic transmission, so as the speed increased, the fuel appetite also increased significantly. Then he received a 6-speed automatic from ZF.

For large gasoline engines, the only available gearbox was a ZF 6-speed automatic.

A 6-speed manual could be combined with a 218-horsepower turbodiesel (since 2003) and a 3-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine. The clutch of the box wears out very quickly, especially during dynamic driving in the city.

Version 3.0i was equipped with a GM automatic transmission until the end of production. This box is considered the least successful, especially in pre-restyling versions (before September 2003). The ZF automatic is more reliable and efficient.

Equipment

Despite the lack of outstanding off-road capabilities, the X5 was in great demand. As it turns out, excellent dynamics and good driving performance are all that many customers need. An additional plus: a stylish and comfortable interior with a good amount of space in both rows. There is a wide variety of equipment options on the market - the result of an impressive list of options, thanks to which the first owners customized the car to suit themselves.

Basically, all copies have rich equipment, including navigation, power windows and side mirrors, parking sensors, xenon headlights, a tire pressure monitoring system and even voice control of some functions. Leather upholstery is very common, and the interior can be decorated with wood or aluminum.

After the facelift, climate control became standard equipment. Safety is ensured by front and side curtain airbags, as well as the DSC stability control system, which interacts with the xDrive all-wheel drive system.

The BMW X5 e53 is aimed primarily at public roads. Of course, it can handle dirt roads or even cross a motocross track. The latter will most likely result in chassis damage. SUV is designed to enjoy unique handling.

Everyday life of the owner

Initially, problems were caused more by cars assembled before the facelift. The reason is not only mechanical reliability, but also the quality of workmanship, which simply did not meet German standards. BMW was just getting started producing cars in the United States, and it took the Spartanburg plant several years to reach German quality standards.

The copies of the first years of production were disturbed by a cheap interior, weak electronics and build quality. Four recall campaigns were required to correct, for example, faults and incorrect installation of the brakes (until 2002), fixing the brake pedal mounting and seat belt mechanism.

Before you decide to buy a BMW X5, there is one thing you need to understand. The German is not at all cheap to operate. Even if you only need to replace consumables, the bill could reach $500.

The main source of particularly large costs is suspension. There are so many items that wear out quickly that, despite the large number of replacements, the cost of repairs can be about $1,000. And this is outside the walls of the official service. For example, an original lever costs about $200, and an analogue one costs about $100.

When repairing an air suspension, the price tag will double. For the front shock absorber alone you will have to pay about $600. Pneuma was used in top-end petrol versions.

With age, corrosion is inevitable at the bottom of the tailgate.

The BMW X5 has a lot of electronics. But in well-maintained restyled examples it does not break down too often. However, sometimes problems arise with the satellite navigation, computer display, heated seats, central locking, electric windows or electric folding rear view mirrors.

The power units are quite modern and quite reliable. They all have a durable timing chain. With proper care, gasoline engines do not cause problems even with long mileages. All that has to be changed is the ignition coils (costing about $40) and the viscous coupling of the cooling fan - about $180.

The viscous coupling is also the weak point of the 3-liter turbodiesel. In addition, after 200,000 km, a diesel engine cannot avoid problems with injectors, which fortunately can be repaired for relatively little money - 50-100 dollars apiece. Other typical turbodiesel maladies: fuel pump ($400) and turbocharger. The cost of the latter is about $1,500, so many owners resort to restoring it - around $400.

Be careful with automatic transmission. The average service life is only 200,000 km, and the cost of repairs reaches $1000-1500. As for the all-wheel drive system, it does not often fail in pre-restyling cars. In later X5s, the electric drive for engaging the clutch sometimes fails, and in addition, the anthers and drive shaft joints wear out faster.

In addition to repair costs, you will also have to fork out for gasoline, especially for owners of the BMW X5 with a 4.4-liter engine. Don't forget about tax. Before you buy an X5, you should carefully check the car at a service center that is familiar with this model - about 60-80 dollars.

Beware of damaged cars

During the inspection, you should pay attention to uneven joints on the body, uneven wear of the tire tread, as well as stability while driving. The vehicle should not pull to one side, yaw, or vibrate noticeably. If the seller says that this is normal, then run away from him.

Conclusion

In the case of an elderly BMW X5, it is certainly better to choose an example with high mileage, but with invoices confirming recent repairs (especially the automatic transmission), than to buy a car with “suspiciously low mileage” in “perfect condition” and after a month spend several thousand dollars on repairs. Remember that the BMW X5, despite its attractive price, has high operating costs.

In November 2013, applications for the new BMW X5 (index “F15”) began in Russia. The third generation of the famous “X5” was officially presented during the Frankfurt Motor Show, and its production was established in the USA, where, as in Europe, sales of the new product began a little earlier. Initially, only three modifications of the American-assembled crossover were offered in Russia, but in May 2014 several more versions were added to them, the production of which had already been launched at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad.

Connoisseurs of the classic brutal forms of the X5 may be upset by the new look of the crossover - after all, the car has acquired some “feminine” features, more dynamic side lines, front and rear design with design elements from current BMW passenger models, as well as sports air intakes along the edges of the front bumper ( driving oncoming flows into the space under the wings). On the other hand, the appearance of the BMW X5 2014-2015 model year has become more modern and closer to the new design standards of the Bavarian automaker.

In terms of dimensions, there were no very noticeable changes: the length extended by 32 mm to 4886 mm, the wheelbase remained at 2933 mm, the width increased by 5 mm and is now 1938 mm, and the height is 1762 mm, which is 13 mm lower than its predecessor . Due to the greater use of aluminum and other lightweight materials, the weight of the car decreased by an average of 90 kg, and the aerodynamic drag coefficient of the body improved from 0.33 to 0.31. Both parameters significantly affected the dynamic characteristics of the crossover, but more on that later.

The interior of the BMW X5 crossover has changed much more noticeably. The new architecture of the front panel brings the F15 closer to the modern style of the German automaker, while simultaneously improving ergonomics. The quality of the materials used to decorate the interior has become even better, but the fit of some elements, in particular the glove compartment lid, leaves much to be desired. Visibility from the driver's seat has hardly changed, since the glazing scheme has remained virtually unchanged, but the side mirrors have become slightly smaller, which has increased the volume of blind spots.

The interior layout is still five-seater, with the possibility of ordering the installation of two more third-row seats for passengers whose height is not higher than 1.5 meters. The level of equipment has become noticeably better: electrically adjustable front seats with memory settings are already available in the base, there is a 10.25-inch display on the center console, and for an additional fee you can install dual-zone climate control and an entertainment system with two monitors for rear passengers.

The useful trunk space in the third generation of the crossover is noticeably larger than that of its predecessor. In its standard state, the trunk holds 650 liters, but due to the rear row of seats folding in a 40:20:40 ratio, it can be increased to 1870 liters, not counting the niche under the floor. The top flap of the trunk lid is equipped with an electric drive, controlled both from a button in the cabin and from the key fob.

Specifications. Initially, the engine line for the 3rd generation BMW X5 offered only three power plant options, but after the launch of production in Kaliningrad, three more engines were added to it, which significantly expanded the choice options.

  • The basic version of the xDrive25d received an in-line 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbodiesel with direct injection and a 16-valve timing belt, which is capable of producing up to 218 hp. power at 4400 rpm and provide up to 450 Nm of torque in the range from 1500 to 2500 rpm. With the younger engine, the X5 will be able to make a starting dash from 0 to 100 km/h in an acceptable 8.2 seconds, while the upper speed limit is limited to 220 km/h. As for fuel consumption, the xDrive25d modification consumes about 5.9 liters of fuel on average.
  • The Germans equipped the xDrive30d with an N57 D30 in-line diesel engine with six cylinders with a volume of 2993 cm³ and an output of 249 hp. at 4000 rpm. The engine is no longer new, it has proven itself, but has undergone serious modernization. In particular, the injection pressure was increased (from 1600 to 1800 bar), the engine weight was reduced and the operation of almost all electronic controls was reconfigured. We also note that the diesel engine is equipped with a new variable-geometry turbocharger, third-generation battery injection and Bosch piezoelectric injectors. The engine torque has been increased to 560 Nm at 1500 – 3000 rpm, which will allow acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds, while the upper speed limit will be 230 km/h. According to the manufacturer's calculations, the average fuel consumption of this engine is 6.2 liters.
  • The same diesel engine, but with a triple turbocharging system (N57S), will decorate the engine compartment of the xDriveM50d modification. In this case, the maximum power is about 381 hp. at 4000 – 4400 rpm, and the peak torque occurs at around 740 Nm in the range from 2000 to 3000 rpm. Such characteristics will provide the crossover with impressive traction, allowing it to make a starting dash from 0 to 100 km/h in an almost class-record 5.3 seconds, but at the same time they will require at least 6.7 liters of fuel for every 100 km of travel.
  • Between the two engines described above is another diesel modification - xDrive40d, which received a 6-cylinder 3.0-liter power unit with a power of 313 hp, developed at 4400 rpm. Like previous engines, this engine is equipped with direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system. The peak torque of the unit is 630 Nm and is maintained in the range of 1500 – 2500 rpm, which allows you to accelerate the crossover from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds or reach a maximum speed of 236 km/h, spending about 6.4 liters mixed cycle fuels.

There will also be gasoline engines in Russia, but only two:

  • The role of the base unit will be played by the unit intended for modification of the xDrive35i. It has 6 cylinders with a displacement of 3.0 liters (2979 cm³), a 24-valve timing belt, direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system. The maximum power of the junior gasoline engine is 306 hp, developed at 5800 rpm, and the peak torque falls at 400 Nm, maintained in the range from 1200 to 5000 rpm. The xDrive35i modification is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds or reaching a maximum speed of 235 km/h, while consuming about 8.5 liters of gasoline of a grade no lower than AI-95.
  • The N63B44 petrol engine with 8 V-shaped cylinders and an improved Twin Turbo dual turbocharging system is designed for the X5 xDrive50i modification, produced only in the USA. The displacement of this engine is 4395 cm³, and its equipment includes a direct fuel injection system, an air-to-water intercooler, a Valvetronic continuously variable valve control system and Twin Scroll turbochargers. The gasoline engine is capable of producing up to 450 hp. power at 5500 rpm and 650 Nm of torque at 2000 - 4500 rpm, while spending about 10.4 liters of fuel per 100 km. As for the dynamic characteristics, with this power unit the crossover is capable of accelerating to a maximum of 250 km/h, while spending no more than 5.0 seconds on the “starting jerk”.

All available engines fully comply with the Euro-6 environmental standard, and in the “Eco Pro” mode they can save up to 20% of fuel due to a “cunning” technological solution: at speeds in the range of 50-160 km/h, when the gas pedal is fully released, the gearbox automatically turns on neutral, transferring the crossover to coasting. The manufacturer promises another 5% savings due to a “smart” connection with the navigation system, which, knowing the route configuration, will regularly prompt the driver when it is necessary to slow down so that he does not have to resort to braking before turning.

The 8-speed automatic transmission ZF8HP, which first appeared in 2008 on the BMW 760Li sedan, was chosen as the gearbox for all three engines. The “Automatic” was seriously modified, rewriting the control program, reducing its weight and reducing losses due to friction of parts by 4%.

According to the developers, the BMW X5 is the founder of the SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) class: sports cars for active recreation, and therefore, to support the corresponding image, driving tests are carried out in cities that previously hosted the Olympics: Atlanta in 1999 (E53), Athens in 2006 year (E70), well, the F15 was “tested” in Vancouver.

In terms of driving performance on paved roads, the crossover has added virtually nothing, but the vehicle’s off-road capability has noticeably decreased. This is due to the short suspension travel and reduced ride height (from 222 mm to 209 mm), which is why on large bumps or holes you can quite easily get caught on the bottom. The crossover is still equipped with the xDrive permanent all-wheel drive system, based on an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch driving the front wheels (60% of the traction goes to the rear axle). Among the changes made, we highlight the reduction in weight of the transfer case, which also received new settings.

The design of the crossover chassis remains the same: an independent double-wishbone suspension system is used at the front, and a multi-link design is installed at the rear in the basic version and air suspension in the top equipment versions. There were no changes at all: both suspensions had slightly changed geometry, the shock absorbers were retuned, and most components were lightened by increasing the share of aluminum.
All wheels of the third generation are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, and the steering is complemented by an electromechanical power steering.

Options and prices. In the basic equipment of the BMW X5 (F15) of the younger modification xDrive25d, the manufacturer included 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, all-round parking sensors, a rear view camera, a safety steering column, extended electrical accessories, dynamic cruise control, ABS, DSC, DBC and HDC systems , central locking with emergency sensor, leather interior, dual-zone climate control, multimedia system, heated front seats, electrically adjustable and with memory settings, ISOFIX mounts, solar glazing, electric trunk lid and a number of other useful little things.

The starting price for the Russian-assembled xDrive25d version is 3,415,000 rubles. The X5 xDrive30d modification is offered at a price starting from 4,395,000 rubles. The xDrive40d version is priced at 5,040,000 rubles, while noticeably less equipped versions of the American-built xDrive40d can still be ordered at prices starting from 3,464,000 rubles. The xDrive M50d crossovers, which will not be produced in Russia, are offered by dealers for a minimum of 4,338,000 rubles. The most affordable version of the BMW X5 with a gasoline engine, represented by the xDrive50i modification, also imported from overseas, will cost so far 3,838,000, but the equipment of this crossover will be an order of magnitude lower than in the Russian-assembled xDrive35i version, which the Germans valued at 4,375,000 rubles

New BMW X5
appeared in Russia in December 2014 as a 2015 model. The third generation, contrary to expectations, did not receive a new platform, but the design and technical components were significantly updated. The new BMW X5 is assembled in the USA, and from there it is sent to 140 countries around the world; vehicle kits for large-scale assembly are sent to several more countries. The more compact BMW X3 is also assembled there.

In terms of overall dimensions, the new body has changed little; with the same wheelbase, the length has added an insignificant 29 mm. From the side, the car hasn't changed much, except for the air vents in the front fenders. The taillights have become LED and are almost the same in shape as those of the younger brother X3. The main modernization affected the front part of the car. The typical BMW “nostrils” of the radiator grille began to protrude more forward, and a raised metal frame appeared. The head optics of the F15 body have also changed, as has the front bumper. The rear bumper has a new lower part, and the shape of the exhaust pipes has changed. BMW X5 interior received minor changes in the shape of the front console, although the buttons remained in the same places. You can note the retractable touch monitor above the dashboard. By the way, in the USA, where this German car was developed and produced, interior modifications with three rows of seats appeared. That is, now it is quite possible to meet 7-seater interior of the new X5.

BMW X5 trunk the new generation has remained virtually unchanged. Just as big, practical and functional. And the folding rear backrest in proportions of 40 to 20 and another 40 percent is quite convenient, increasing the functionality of the car’s cargo space. The backrest, which is divided into three parts, allows you to transport rather unusual things without restricting the rear passengers.

Technical characteristics of BMW X5

Characteristics of the Russian version of the BMW X5 not much different from the machines that are offered in other markets. The power units available are petrol engines of 3 and 4.4 liters and diesel engines of 3 liters, but of varying power. All engines are turbocharged, and the top version with the M50d diesel engine received triple (!!!) supercharging. The gearbox is either an 8-speed automatic or a sports modification of the same automatic.

All X5 engines make the crossover a very dynamic car, but first things first. Thus, the gasoline version with a supercharged inline 6-cylinder engine X5 xDrive35i with a displacement of 3 liters produces 306 horsepower. Acceleration to the first hundred with this engine under the hood is 6.5 seconds. The official fuel consumption in urban conditions is 11.2 liters, in reality this figure is naturally higher. The more powerful X5 xDrive50i with 450 horsepower (4.4 liter V8) accelerates the car to 100 km/h in 5 seconds! True, fuel consumption in the city is from 14 liters.

Diesel versions of the BMW X5 xDrive30d, xDrive40d and xDriveM50d have power of 249, 313 and 381 horsepower, respectively. Structurally, all engines are the same, have the same displacement of 3 liters and an in-line 6-cylinder cylinder block. However, one unit has simply supercharging, another has double supercharging, and the most powerful, third engine has triple supercharging! By the way, the 2015 BMW X5 is the only production car with triple supercharging. What are the dynamics of American-made German diesel engines? According to the manufacturer, the 30d accelerates the car to hundreds in 6.9 seconds, the 40d in 5.9 seconds, and the M50d in 5.3 seconds, fuel consumption in mixed mode is 6.2, 6.3 and 6.7 liters of diesel fuel.

In general, if you choose based on fuel consumption, then diesel versions of the X-5 are preferable. Gone are the days when diesel engines had mediocre dynamics; today, diesel units are not inferior to gasoline units in terms of acceleration dynamics. At the same time consuming significantly less fuel.
