UAZ Patriot is a comfortable modern SUV that embodies all the best developments and technical solutions of UAZ specialists over the past 10 years. And no wonder, because the UAZ Patriot, serial production of which began at the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant on August 17, 2005, is the first fundamentally new SUV model developed at UAZ over the past 30 years. This car is aimed at people who lead an active lifestyle, and is perfect for daily trips around the city for shopping or work, as well as for recreation outside the city limits, in nature.

Among the fundamentally new solutions of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant specialists, it is worth noting the design of the suspension, steering and transmission units, the interior, which is distinguished by its increased comfort, and the very attractive, original exterior design. In the assembly of UAZ Patriot cars, imported components are widely used; their share in the car is more than 20 percent. Special mention should be made of the Iranian panel, the Korean gearbox, similar to the one installed on the Rexton, as well as the headlights, which were developed by Bosh specifically for the UAZ Patriot.

In order to implement the launch of production of the new product as successfully as possible, to achieve high levels of vehicle assembly quality, the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant launched a new welding line, modernized the main conveyor, and built a new Eisenmann painting complex. Also noteworthy is the introduction of a new “Production System”, similar to that used in Japanese car factories, and the completion of a special training course for personnel to assemble the Patriot. All this testifies to the special attitude of the company’s managers towards this model, and it should be noted that it has borne fruit: the build quality has noticeably improved compared to previous models of the plant. We were especially pleased with the dimensions of the new five-door SUV; they, as well as the steering wheel with tilt adjustment, will allow even a very tall driver to drive the car as comfortably as possible. In the harsh Russian winter, the stove saves you from the cold, which in the new model can also work separately for the first and second rows.

Fortunately, comfort did not worsen the Patriot’s dynamic performance, excellent endurance and cross-country ability. One has only to turn on the all-wheel drive, and you will feel like a tamer of even the most impenetrable spaces. The main components of the car do not fail even in extreme conditions, and the high-spirited engine allows the UAZ Patriot to accelerate to a speed of 150 km/h.

To summarize, the advantages of the new UAZ SUV can be considered a spacious and comfortable interior with a modern design, excellent visibility, comfortable seats and, of course, low cost compared to imported analogues. The disadvantages include modest dynamics, itching and vibration of the levers, weak brakes, limited traction capabilities, and blurry response on the road.

The basic equipment of the UAZ Patriot includes central locking, power steering, an adjustable steering column, audio equipment, an additional brake light on the rear door, as well as stamped wheels with 225/75 R16 tires. When to do it

UAZ maintenance is necessary if:

Types of service

Daily maintenance of UAZ:

  • visual inspection of the condition of the platform and body, glass, paint, license plates, etc.;

  • checking the tightness of all systems containing fuel, oil and coolants for leaks;
  • assessment of the condition of electricians, lighting devices and alarm systems;
  • filling the glass washer reservoir with a special liquid or water (only in the warm season);

  • cleaning or replacing the air filter;
  • elimination of all identified defects;
  • car wash.
  • adjusting the free play of the clutch pedal;
  • checking the free play of the steering wheel, clearances in the steering rod joints, and in the pivot joints;
  • checking the cotter pins of the ball pin nuts, the fastening of the steering knuckle arm, ball pins, ball joints to the axle housings, the steering wheel bipod, and the tightening of the lug nuts;
  • setting the free and working strokes of the brake pedal;
  • assessment of the fastening of the exhaust pipe of the muffler and its suspension;
  • checking the wheel fastening, the condition of the tires and the air pressure in them;
  • checking the fastening of gearbox and transfer case control drives;
  • checking the fastening of the flanges of the front and rear propeller shafts to the flanges of the transfer case shafts;
  • cleaning the battery from dirt;
  • cleaning battery ventilation holes in traffic jams;
  • checking the electrolyte level and, if necessary, adding distilled water;
  • checking the tension of the fan belt and generator mounting;
  • compliance with all instructions in the lubrication table provided for TO-1.

During TO-2 you should:

  • check the clutch operation and free play of the clutch pedal;
  • check and, if necessary, adjust the gaps between the rocker arms and valves;
  • check the fastening of the engine, engine oil sump, upper and lower parts of the clutch housing;
  • check the fastening of the radiator and its lining, blinds, spacer rods;
  • During the inspection, check the tightness of the cooling system, the serviceability and fastening of the cooling system pump and fan, and the condition of the fan belt;
  • clean the generator and starter from dirt and oil and check the condition of the commutator and starter brushes;
  • blow out the cavity of the generator and starter with compressed air and check their fastening;
  • adjust the tension of the fan belt;
  • check the fastening of the inlet and outlet pipelines;
  • clean the surface of the spark plugs, ignition coil of the distributor sensor and high-voltage wires from dirt and oil;
  • check the condition of the high and low voltage wires;
  • remove the spark plugs and check their condition;
  • clean the electrodes and adjust the gap between them;
  • check the degree of charge of the battery by the voltage of the elements under load;
  • remove the battery to recharge;
  • check the fastening of the battery in the socket;
  • check the fastening of the carburetor and fuel pump, eliminate malfunctions if detected;
  • adjust the crankshaft speed at idle speed;
  • check the fastening of the crankcase and bipod of the steering mechanism;
  • check and, if necessary, adjust the engagement of the worm and the steering roller;
  • check the amount of toe-in of the front wheels, adjust if necessary;
  • check the serviceability of the drive and the operation of the parking brake;
  • if necessary, remove the drum, check the wear of the brake linings, disassemble, wash and lubricate the release and adjusting mechanisms;
  • Inspect the condition of the frame, springs, spring cushions, cups, clamps and shock absorbers, and correct faults if necessary. Re-rivet loose rivets of cups and spring clamps;
  • check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel hub bearings;
  • Remove the brake drums and clean the brakes. Check the condition of the brake drums, pads, linings and fastening of the brake shields;
  • check the condition of the brake system pipelines and brake cylinders;
  • install brake drums and adjust the gaps between the brake drums and pads;
  • check the fastening of the drive flanges of the hubs and the flanges of the axle shafts;
  • check the fastening of the bearing caps of the drive gears of the front and rear axles;
  • check the fastening of the gearbox to the clutch housing and the transfer case to the gearbox;
  • check the clearances in the bearings of the drive gear of the main transmission of the front and rear axles and, if any, eliminate defects;
  • check the fastening of the cardan shaft flanges;
  • check the fastening of the body (cabin) and platform to the frame;
  • check and, if necessary, adjust the tension of the front door power window cables;
  • check the fastening of fuel tanks;
  • if necessary, balance the wheels;
  • clean the hoses and rinse the parts of the closed engine crankcase ventilation system with kerosene;
  • clean the air filter and its filter element from dust and dirt;
  • wash the flame arrester mesh inside the filter cover with kerosene;
  • replace each filter element with a new one;
  • Follow all instructions in the lubrication table.

Seasonal service

Seasonal maintenance is carried out twice a year - in spring and autumn, and, if possible, combined with the next maintenance-2. When transitioning to the winter or summer operating season, the scope of work on TO-2 is supplemented by the following operations.

1. Before the summer operating season:

  • set the damper for heating the working mixture of the gas pipeline to the “Summer” position;
  • drain sediment from fuel tanks;
  • remove the heater and wiper motors, check the condition of the commutator and brushes, wash and lubricate the bearings;
  • flush the cooling system;
  • replace the oils in the units with summer grades specified in the lubrication table.

2. Before the winter season of operation:

  • set the valve for heating the working mixture of the gas pipeline to the “Winter” position;
  • wash fuel tanks and fuel filters;
  • replace the oils in the units with winter grades specified in the lubrication table;
  • prepare the engine starting heater for operation (if installed);
  • check the operation of the heating and ventilation system of the body (cabin);
  • check the operation of the blinds, eliminate malfunctions and lubricate the draft;
  • Clean or replace the brake booster air filter.

Remember that when servicing a UAZ, all previous types of maintenance must be included!

Daily Maintenance

1. By external inspection, check the completeness of the car, the condition of the body, glass, rear-view mirrors, tails, registration plates, paint, door locks, frame, springs, shock absorbers, wheels and tires. Eliminate detected faults.

Inspect the parking area and make sure there are no leaks of fuel, oil, coolant and brake fluid. Eliminate detected faults.

Check and adjust the level of coolant, oil in the engine crankcase and brake fluid to normal levels.

2. Check the operation of the steering, brake systems, lighting devices, light and sound alarms, and windshield wipers. Eliminate detected faults.

3. Fill the windshield washer reservoir. In the warm season, the use of water is allowed.

4. If the car was operated in conditions of increased dustiness or crossed fords and sections of dirt roads filled with liquid mud, replace or clean the filter element of the engine air filter.

5. After the trip, wash the car if it was driven on dirty or dusty roads.


Maintenance after break-in

1. Tighten the nuts of the engine cylinder head (except UAZ-31604).

2. Change the oil in the gearbox housings, transfer case, front and rear axles, flushing the units with spindle or industrial oil with a kinematic viscosity at a temperature of 50 °C of no more than 14. The volume of flushing oil poured must be at least 75% of the filling rate.

3. Check the oil level in the steering gear housing or in the power steering system tank and top up if necessary.

4. Carry out the work specified in the subsection "Car maintenance every 10,000 km", with the exception of points 1, 7, 14, 15, 18.

5. Carry out the work specified in paragraphs 2, 5 of the subsection “Car maintenance every 20,000 km.”


Car maintenance every 500 km

1. Check and adjust tire pressure to normal.

2. Check and, if necessary, adjust the tension of the generator belts and power steering pump.

3. On a new car, after driving the first 500 km, tighten the steering gear housing mounts.


Car maintenance every 10,000 km

1. Check the condition of the brake pads and brake disc of the front wheels. Replace if extremely worn.

2. Check and, if necessary, adjust the free play of the brake pedal.

Check the secure fastening of the parking brake mechanism and drive and tighten if necessary. Check the effectiveness of the parking brake. Adjust if necessary.

Check the tightness of the hydraulic drive, the condition of the pipes, wires and hoses of the brake system. Troubleshoot.

Check the efficiency of the front and rear circuits of the brake system and the operation of the brake pressure regulator.

3. Check the free play of the steering wheel, the condition, tightness and cotter pins of the steering rod ball pin nuts, the clearances in the steering rod joints and steering gear, the fastening of the steering knuckle lever, bipod and steering gear housing. Eliminate malfunctions, tighten fastenings, and, if necessary, adjust the steering mechanism.

4. Check the condition of the front and rear suspension elements. Eliminate faults, replace worn hinges and deformed rods, tighten fastenings.

5. Check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel hub bearings.

6. Check the condition of the tires. If uneven wear on the front tires is detected, check and adjust the toe-in of the front wheels.



8. Tighten the fastenings of the flanges of the front and rear propeller shafts to the flanges of the transfer case and axle shafts, ball joints to the flanges of the axle housings, leading flanges to the hubs.

9. Tighten the engine mount, engine oil sump, upper and lower parts of the clutch housing, fuel lines, intake and exhaust manifolds, muffler exhaust pipe and its suspension. On a UAZ-31604 car, in addition, tighten the fastening of the high-pressure fuel pump, connecting elements of glow plugs, air hoses, turbocharger, connection of the turbocharger to the exhaust manifold.

10. Tighten the fastening of the radiator and its trim.

11. Check the condition of the generator belts, power steering pump, and vacuum pump. Replace worn belts. Adjust the belt tension.

12. Check and, if necessary, adjust the gaps between the rocker arms and valves (UAZ-3160,

31601, -31605).

13. Check the tightness of the power system. Eliminate faults.

14. Wash the fuel pump strainer (UAZ-31601).

15. Replace the filter element of the fine fuel filter.

16. Clean the air filter and its filter element from dust and dirt. Clean the flame arrestor mesh inside the air filter cover.

17. Clean the battery from dirt, clean the ventilation holes in the plugs, check the electrolyte level and, if necessary, add distilled water and charge the battery.

18. Clean the generator and starter from dirt and oil, check the condition of the commutator and brushes. If necessary, replace the brushes, blow out the cavity of the generator and starter with compressed air and check their fastening.

19. Clean the surface of the spark plugs, ignition coil, distributor sensor and high-voltage wires from dirt and oil. Check the distribution sensor, the condition of the high and low voltage wires. Remove the spark plugs and check their condition. If necessary, clean the electrodes and adjust the gap between them. Check the reliability of the installation of high-voltage wires in the sockets of the distributor sensor cover and the ignition coil. Check the ignition timing setting (UAZ-31601).

20. Check the fuel level in the carburetor float chamber, the operation of the accelerator pump and economizer (UAZ-31601). Eliminate malfunctions.

21. Adjust the crankshaft rotation speed at idle speed (except for UAZ-3160, -31605) and check the toxicity of exhaust gases (except for UAZ-31604). If necessary, adjust the composition of the air-fuel mixture.


Car maintenance every 20,000 km

1. Check the condition of the brake pads of the rear wheels and the parking brake system. Replace extremely worn linings.

2. Adjust the headlights.

3. Check the clearances in the bearings of the main drive gears of the front and rear axles and, if any, eliminate them.

4. Check and, if necessary, adjust the tightness of the steering knuckle pins.

5. Check and, if necessary, tighten the fastenings of all units, components, transmission parts, engine and body to the frame.

6. Drain the sediment and wash the fuel tanks.

7. Clean the hoses and rinse the engine crankcase ventilation system parts with kerosene.

8. Check the proper operation of the thermostat, temperature sensors, and fan clutch. Check the condition of hoses and connections. Troubleshoot. Replace faulty thermostat and sensors, damaged hoses.

9. On a UAZ-31604 vehicle, check the operation of the glow plugs.


Car maintenance every 30,000 km

1. Change the oil in the engine crankcase, after flushing the lubrication system.

2. Remove the starter from the vehicle and carry out maintenance.


Car maintenance every 40,000 km

1. Replace the alternator belt (UAZ-31604).

2. On a UAZ-31604 vehicle, check the spraying of the injectors.


Car maintenance every 60,000 km

Classic model

The UAZ 3163 Patriot SUV was launched into production at the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant in 2005. It became the successor to the UAZ 3160 and, which appeared in 1997 and 2000, respectively. Its main difference from previous models was the use of a large number of imported parts.

UAZ Patriot is equipped with European steering, braking, heating and interior air conditioning systems. In addition, the car has a Dymos gearbox and comfortable seats manufactured by the South Korean corporation DAWNSCO.

Some vehicles were equipped with an imported Iveco F1A diesel engine, but it was later replaced by the domestic ZMZ 51432 engine, which meets higher environmental standards. All other parts, including the chassis, transfer case and axles, remained domestic.

Thanks to modernization, UAZ repairs on our own became much less necessary. Despite this, the need to carry out regular maintenance of the Patriot remains, since it is very difficult to find a reliable UAZ car service center.

Diagnostic work

Do-it-yourself regular maintenance of a UAZ SUV consists of checking and inspecting the vehicle’s mechanisms, replacing faulty parts at certain intervals. Diagnostics is necessary, since each component and unit has its own service life. Timely maintenance of the UAZ 3163 allows you to identify faults before they lead to dire consequences.

Machines under maintenance

The manufacturer has established that the following diagnostic work must be carried out every 10,000 km.

  1. Inspect paint, glass and mirrors for cracks and corrosion.
  2. Check the operation of the hood and door locks, seat belts, power windows and ventilation hatch.
  3. Checking the condition of the suspension, the toe angle of the front wheels, the greatest angle of rotation of the wheels, the condition of the intermediate support and cardan shafts.
  4. Adjusting wheel bearings.
  5. Checking play in the king pins, steering gear, steering rod joints, and steering wheel play.
  6. Inspection for tightness of gaskets and pipes of all hydraulic systems of the vehicle.
  7. Diagnostics of the engine control system and anti-lock braking system.
  8. Checking the operation of the air throttle drive and the adsorber purge valve.
  9. Measuring the level of antifreeze in the system, electrolyte in the battery, oil in the power steering reservoir, brake fluid in the clutch and brake hydraulic reservoirs.
  10. Measuring the tension of fan and generator belts.
  11. Listen for unusual engine and transmission knocks and noises.
  12. Testing the operation of the generator, lighting and measuring instruments.
  13. Checking the travel of the brake pedal, the condition of the brake pads and discs, the effectiveness of the service and hand brakes.

This type of maintenance is required every 20,000 km.

  1. Inspection of engine mounts.
  2. Diagnostics of the operation of the cooling system, the condition of the radiator plug, clearances in the bearings of the final drive gears of both axles.
  3. Checking the condition of contacts of all electrical systems.
  4. Diagnostics of brake drums.

Axle lubrication is checked every 14,000 km, and the lubricant level in the gearbox and transfer case is checked after 200,000 km.

Required regulatory

Maintenance of the UAZ 3163 Patriot consists of timely replacement of consumables and carrying out scheduled preventative maintenance. This helps extend the life of the car without breakdowns.

Routine maintenance that is carried out every 10,000 km.

  1. Tightening the front and rear suspension to the frame, driveshaft flanges to the transfer case and axles, intermediate support to the cross member, balls to the axle shafts, drive flanges to the hubs, steering knuckle arms and steering gear parts.
  2. Tightening of the attachments of the power unit, as well as its crankcase and clamps of all rubber hoses.
  3. Wheel balancing and rotation.
  4. Draining water from gas tanks.
  5. Cleaning and lubricating battery terminals, cleaning ventilation holes in plugs.
  6. Cleaning spark plugs, adjusting gap.
  7. Changing the engine oil.
  8. Cleaning axle safety valves.

The following operations are carried out every 20,000 km.

  1. Tightening of transmission, engine and body elements to the frame. These actions must be carried out for the first time after the car has been broken in.
  2. Replacing the fuel filter.
  3. Cleaning the inspection hole in the pump.
  4. Replacing spark plugs.
  5. Changing transmission oil.
  6. Adjusting the direction of headlights and foglights.

Changing the oil in the car

After passing every 30,00 km, such work is carried out.

  1. Cleaning and flushing the crankcase ventilation system, replacing the air filter filter element.
  2. Washing gas tanks and the electric fuel pump (EFP) strainer.
  3. Cleaning the engine lubrication system.
  4. Changing the oil in axles and wheel bearings, tightening the bolts of the rear brake shields and front axles.

Replacement of the EBN, injectors, idle speed regulator, pressure regulator, converter, ignition coil, adsorber and all power unit control sensors is carried out every 80,000 km. Cleaning the generator and starter from dirt, checking the condition of the brushes and commutator, and replacing the brushes (recommended) are carried out after every 40,000 km.

Tightening of the crankshaft and generator pulleys is carried out only after break-in. Once every 2 years, the brake fluid and power steering oil are replaced. Antifreeze is changed once every 3 years.

The odometer showed 15,000 km. This means it's time to do scheduled maintenance-1. In addition to this, you need to change the oil in the front axle, because...

Because when I studied the orders from Sofit in more detail, I suddenly realized that on the TO-0 I made, the oil was changed only in the rear axle. This happened six months ago, so it’s difficult to say what exactly happened: either I said something wrong, or the receptionist and I didn’t understand each other.

Thus, you first need to purchase oil for the internal combustion engine and front axle.

From the last oil change I still had about 3 liters of engine oil left, so I bought one 4-liter Lukoil canister for the engine:

In the last post about changing the oil, I talked about why I choose Lukoil as a supplier of lubricants.

Like last time, I buy oil at a Lukoil gas station, where, as I also mentioned earlier, the chance of stumbling upon a fake is minimal.


I made an appointment at the service station the next day.

During a routine inspection, the technician discovered some wear on the generator drive belt. We have heard a lot about this feature of factory parts, so I agreed with the master’s recommendation to replace the belt. Low coolant levels were also noticed. This misunderstanding has also been corrected.

All the work took about 4 hours, not counting the car wash, therefore, my recommendation: you should take care of your leisure time in advance while the maintenance work is being carried out.

In total, according to the works and materials of the service station, cost of TO-1 amounted to 7343 rubles. If you take into account the oil I bought, then that’s another two thousand rubles. That is, in the end: ~ 9400 rubles.
