E36 on-board computer. BMW E32, E34, E36 - on-board computer operating instructions

An on-board computer is not mandatory in the troika. Many cars don’t have it and installing it yourself is expensive. Some machines have this toy installed, and some will find its functions and capabilities useful. There is no such thing on the author’s troika, and I have never seen it. Information taken from the Internet.

On-board computer functions

(km C miles F)- Button to the left of the LCD - switches between English and metric units. It is useful to switch miles/gallons/Fahrenheit to kilometers/liters/degrees after switching to English (to the right of the LCD is a phototransistor for automatically adjusting the brightness of the board. It cannot be pressed).

Top row

- To enter thousands, hundreds, tens and units of a particular parameter, respectively.
- Set/Reset. Analogous to the Enter key on simpler computers, it saves the entered data. When pressed in clock mode, the beep symbol lights up/turns off. It will beep about half a minute before the end of each hour (reminds you to turn off the AC/DC and listen to the news to see if it’s time to get out?).

Middle row

- Switches time to date and vice versa to display\\change.
A prompt to enter the year appears after you enter the date. Year 2000 works without issue. The data is saved after pressing s/r, and the seconds, although not displayed, are reset to 00.
- Fuel consumption 1 and fuel consumption 2. The countdown starts after pressing s/r. Shows integrated fuel consumption per 100 km. Two registers can be used to track consumption, for example, over the entire distance and any part of it.
- How many kilometers can you still drive with the remaining fuel? When the value is less than 15 km, dashes appear (it’s time to feed). If there is a “+” symbol next to km, there is more fuel in the tank than indicated in km or the tank is full.
- Average speed. The countdown starts after pressing s/r.
-Ambient air temperature. It may not be relevant after parking with a warm engine (the sensor in the front bumper gets hot). Updated as you move. At a temperature of +3C, when the ignition is turned on, a warning (beeping) is issued. This means that at +3C it is theoretically possible for ice to form on overpasses, etc., i.e. a call for caution.

Bottom row

- Counts time 1 and time 2 (similar to flow rate). First in minutes:seconds, then hours:minutes.
The maximum value is 99 hours 59 minutes. It's just elapsed time and nothing more. Stops when the ignition is turned off and resumes when it is turned on. The countdown starts after pressing s/r.
In cars equipped with parking heating (park ventilation), sets the heating start and stop times, respectively.
- Expected time of arrival. Works only when data is entered in DIST.
- You can enter the distance to the intended target. It just counts down the km. In this case, based on the traffic dynamics, the arrival time is extrapolated. The countdown starts after pressing s/r.
- Speed limit. If the current speed exceeds the set speed by more than 5 km\\h, the BC blinks and the LED begins to blink. A message is displayed on the board. You can read about the car’s refusal to pick up speed further from I.S. Krylova.
- Immobilizer. Key to radio position, enter a code of 4 (any) digits, press s/r, turn off the ignition. At the same time, tracking of opening the hood, rear seat and removing the radio is activated. If one of the three is not in place, the LED flashes invitingly - you need to check whether everything is closed/inserted into place.

The next time you turn on the ignition, you must enter the code (preferably the same as it was at the beginning) and press s/r. Without this, it is impossible to start the engine, and after the 3rd attempt to start, the alarm goes off.

If there is a display at the bottom of the board (the E34 on 520i and 525td/tds does not), then all information from the bookmaker can be independently reflected on it. It is displayed by sequentially pressing the turn signal switch towards the steering column (there is an arrow and letters - BC).
The display sequence can be programmed.

To do this, press the switch and hold it for 3 seconds. PROG 1 will light up. Press on the BC those buttons whose information is desired on the display. Termination by s/r, in which case the information passes cyclically and it is not necessary to display all of it.

To select between expenses, use the km/miles button. Similarly for two values ZEIT and time/date. If s/r is pressed immediately after the PROG 1 prompt, all data from the BC will be displayed sequentially.

Switching the on-board computer to another language

First - the key is in position 2 - which is immediately before the ignition - well, when the brushes are working, then hold the button that was already said (symmetrical to the mileage reset), hold it for a long time, but not 2 minutes, it should work in about a second . 30. And the language will change, hold it again - it will change again, and so on until there is US English or UK English...

VIN in computer and car

On the rear edge of the engine compartment, right below the windshield, almost in the middle, a little to the right. Visible through a gap in the plastic trim, open the hood.

You press the check control (symmetrically with respect to the odometer reset on the board on the right), insert the key, turn on the ignition (without starting the engine), start the tests. The VIN only gives the last 7 characters.

On-board computer messages (German-English-Russian)

Bad messages

Bremsflussigkeit - brake fluid level is approaching minimum
Oeldruck Motor - insufficient oil pressure in the engine. Appears if, after starting, the oiler does not go out for about 5 seconds (I omit cases of the pan being pierced). The manual requires stopping the engine immediately, but if you try to start it right away, it helps. It’s worth thinking about the next “cheaper” oil filter -
Kuhlwassertemp - overheating. Heat on full, turn off the engine.
Handbremse lostn - take off the handbrake, fool!
Kein Bremslicht - no brake light. Rarely do two lamps light up.
Bremsli. Elektrik - the fuse or brake light circuit is covered.
Speed Limit - you have exceeded the specified speed

Not very bad messages

Getriebeprogramm [ХЗ] - the death of an automatic transmission (I can’t go into more detail, I have a manual transmission)
Bremsbelage - the pads have worn out and the sensor has tripped. Change both.
Waschwasserstand - insufficient fluid level in the washer reservoir (washer fluids are running out). Top up.
1 Bremslicht - one brake light is covered. We change the light bulb.
Abblendlicht - the low beam is covered. See previous paragraph.
Rucklicht - one of the rear lights does not light up. See previous paragraph.
Kennzeichenlicht - one or both license plate lamps do not light up. See previous paragraph.
Anhangerlicht [ХЗ] - something is not working in the trailer light alarm.

BMW E36 on-board computer repair

If you have such an on-board computer (hereinafter referred to as BC) and at some point the horizontal or vertical segments of the indicator began to disappear and in order to view the inscriptions you need to select an observation angle, and in cold weather there is some improvement. The reason for this is a factory defect! Typical for this type of BC released in the 90s. Next, I will tell you how to overcome this problem at home.

The nature of the defect in copper oxide!

The indicator is connected to the main board with a graphite cable; the contact tracks on the board were left unchanged by the manufacturer - ordinary copper! So it oxidized, most likely entered into a chemical reaction with the adhesive composition of the graphite plume.

First, how to remove the BC. This is done quite simply, you pry the BC with your hand through the hole in the upper part of the shelf located under the BC.

Using any thin object, bend the upper part of the shelf away from the BC and at the same time push the lower part of the BC out, then it can be easily removed entirely.

Then feel free to disconnect the connector and take the BC to your home!

Now that the BC is on your table, you need to disassemble it by bending several latches of the case.

If you have a 12V power supply that produces a current of about 0.5A, then you can connect a BC at home.

To do this, you need to apply + 12V to three pins, if you count clockwise the connector contacts from the printed circuit board side, then these are pins 9,10,14, and connect the (-) power supply to pin 11. The first pin is indicated on the board, it is at the top left!

After power is applied, four inscriptions will appear on the indicator in turn: the panel is not connected; see instructions; temperature -37; enter time.

Now to the point (it’s a pity, of course, that I can’t show all the photos, now I don’t want to open the entire BC and break the not very well secured contacts):

You only need to peck off, or rather even tear off the bus, from the side of the printed circuit board!!! So
It’s like the indicator is sputtered with gold, but it doesn’t oxidize.
The busbar must be torn off from the board very carefully so as not to damage its contact in the place
sticking to the screen!!! The main thing is to do everything slowly!

To get to the bus, you need to desolder the contacts on the backlight lamps with suction. Then unscrew the two screws that secure the backlight housing to the board!

When you get to the glass LCD, remember where the filter substrates are located!

The separation angle of the cable must be selected so that the graphite comes off the board and remains
a little on this train.

After this, the printed circuit board must be cleaned at the contact point
tires to a copper shine! I carefully trimmed the shank with scissors, i.e.
cut it by about 3mm, so as to leave the remaining graphite contact undamaged by tearing, the length of the cable allows this to be done, there is no glue left, a clean, undamaged graphite layer about 1mm in length, this is just enough for excellent contact.

Then we put this tire on the contacts and secure it with transparent tape so that the tire does not move to the sides. There is a silicone soft pressure tape on the case; it must be peeled off and re-glued to the edge of the indicator holder case so that it now presses the graphite contacts of the cable to the board!

On the case, in the places where the printed circuit board is centered, there are small guide posts made of plastic, so you need to carefully remove them and install micro-screws instead of them, pre-drill the guide holes!

If the contacts are aligned accurately and the silicone rubber presses them along their entire length, then when you turn on the power you will enjoy a high-quality picture from any viewing angle to the screen!

My refurbished BC has been tested by operation and in frosts of -40 in the North and in the Crimean heat, everything is just super!

If pressing with three screws is not enough, you can use double-sided tape and stick it in the central parts of the indicator clamp:

Good luck with the repair, BMW lovers!
