Such versions are more interesting than the optimum only in small details: a folding ignition key, a fully automatic driver's window mode, a front center armrest, a case for glasses and a dashboard with internal Supervision lighting. Nevertheless, the “Style” hatchback itself is 43 thousand more expensive than the optimum - plus 29,500 will have to be paid for the “Safety” package, which includes additional “inflators”. As a result, Solaris will turn out to be a bit expensive - 578,400 rubles. And with an automatic transmission, the price of the car even surpasses the six hundred thousand mark.

And for Kia Rios manufactured before March 2012, the hood may also be “spoilt” - there was even a service campaign to repair loose hinges. The creaking of door opening limiters can be overcome by regular lubrication, and the “incontinence” of their clamps after four to five years can be replaced ($15 each). At that point, Kia may also need a new trunk release button ($25): moisture penetrating through the torn rubber seals the contacts.

It happens that even plastic exterior door handles crack! And with the black “unpainted” ones from Hyundai (20 dollars each), in addition, with active use, over two or three years the coating begins to wear off, exposing... the snow-white plastic base.

The search for traces of time can be continued in the cabin. And not only in the fabric upholstery of the seats, which stretches depending on the size of the riders over two to four years, and then can upset the seams when they come apart. Covers, by the way, can also be damaged by electric heating: its elements ($70-100) were modified at the end of 2014, and before after three or four years they threatened to burn through the drapery and easily failed from local pressure. So keep in mind: it is better not to place a heavy load on the pillow.





Hyundai's air duct deflectors break without much effort. And in Kia, you definitely need to inspect almost the entire front panel for cracks: the frames of the deflectors and the emergency warning buttons, the panels of the climate control unit and the radio do not cope with strong temperature changes and have been replaced more than once under warranty.

The least scratch-resistant glossy plastic is near the gear lever and on the center console.

By the way, not everything is going smoothly with the weather in the house either: the ventilation system does not cope with its responsibilities without difficulty, and after a couple of hours of working at full capacity in the heat, it can completely deprive you of coolness due to an icy evaporator of the air conditioner. The heater motor ($70 original and half the price of analogues) was often replaced under warranty, and for copies older than mid-2015, after 80-90 thousand kilometers, in addition, the compressor itself ($400 branded and from 150 replacements) with a failed clutch may also upset you - later they began to use a more durable bearing. But the heating of the mirrors, on the contrary, is too zealous: cracks of icy glass (15 euros each) when it is turned on in severe frost are not uncommon.

The seat upholstery material is not of the best quality: it becomes stretched and shiny after 40-50 thousand kilometers.

Dealers of both brands had to replace failed dashboards for free ($400-500). Just don’t rush to blame the entire tidy if, without turning red, the fuel gauge is lying: as a rule, it’s the float of its sensor that hangs in the tank. And for copies older than 2014, do not forget to check whether the “music” control buttons on the steering wheel work (for 45 dollars each unit) and whether the steering column switch, which can turn on the high beam instead of the low beam when turning on the turn signals, is not harmful: all this equipment has also been required more than once warranty replacements.

We don’t have diesel-powered Solaris: the choice between Kia and Hyundai comes down to one of two options for the displacement of gasoline units of the Gamma series. The G4FA engines with a volume of 1.4 liters (a third of the cars on the market) and the G4FC with a volume of 1.6 liters both come from the Chinese province of Shandong and are similar both in design and reliability - they can withstand at least 200-250 thousand kilometers. But after 120 thousand, a stretched chain ($40) in the gas distribution mechanism drive can confuse the CVVT phase adjustment system. What's worse, it can jump over the teeth of the sprockets - and the valves will learn what it's like to hit the pistons. An equally sad ending is due to the fault of an unreliable chain tensioner ($30) - do not forget to listen to the drive. Just don’t confuse the voice of the chain with the clicking of valves - the thermal gap in their drive, due to the lack of hydraulic compensators, is regulated by selecting pushers.

At first, another automatic tensioner - in the drive of attachments ($90) - was not particularly reliable. Fortunately, its weakness after 70-90 thousand kilometers does not threaten anything more serious than nightingale trills from under the hood and accelerated wear of the drive belt. The unit had to be modified to better protect it from dust and dirt twice - in 2013 and at the end of 2014.

Tremor and floating idle speeds after 50 thousand kilometers for Gamma engines are a sure sign of a throttle body that is overgrown with deposits and in need of cleaning ($270). And if the engine continues to run hot at medium speeds, ask the previous owner if he missed updating the ECU firmware.

Once every two to three years you will need to wash the radiator block from dirt and fluff. But it happened that overheating was also caused by a penny loose nut securing the cooling fan impeller - you need to check whether the “propeller” is loose, after 40-60 thousand kilometers. And leaks in the intake tract resulted in expensive scuffing of the cylinder coating. After all, the aluminum block is disposable, does not require boring to repair size and therefore can be replaced entirely ($3,000).

But the engine is much more threatened by the neutralizer drawn closely to it. It does not have a large reserve of endurance, but if something happens, the ceramic honeycombs will begin to crumble, and this “sand” will cause trouble in the cylinders. So think about where it’s safer to refuel, and watch (especially carefully after 100-120 thousand kilometers) the serviceability of the injection and ignition systems. And if traction suddenly starts to drop or a rattling noise is heard when you press the gas pedal, do not hesitate to replace the catalytic converter ($780-$1,150).

And keep an eye out for leaks: oil is not averse to leaving the engines through the crankshaft seals. Timing or valve covers that “fog up” after four to five years are also quite common: the sealant dries out over time. And if in cars with a 1.6 engine older than 2012, by 120-130 thousand kilometers, along with a drop in the level of antifreeze, a white plume stretches out of the exhaust pipe - prepare a new cylinder head gasket ($20) instead of the leaky one and add money for grinding the cylinder head.






The brothers Solaris and Rio are among those rare cars in which it is better to prefer an automatic transmission to a manual transmission. Paired with the 1.6 engine, the four-speed A4CF1 model of 2005 traces its pedigree to the ancient F4A41 unit of the nineties, dating back to the time of transmission cooperation between Hyundai and Mitsubishi. There is nowhere to get agility, but the unit is as simple as five kopecks, it has been modernized more than once and has long ago suffered from almost all childhood diseases. Among the remaining chronic ailments are shocks and delays during switching (which is why the valve bodies were even changed under warranty). Symptoms worsen after 140-150 thousand kilometers due to the fault of the torque converter lockup solenoids ($45), pressure regulation ($80) or valves ($280).

But usually the gearbox starts asking for a major overhaul with overhaul of the valve body, replacement of bushings and oil pump ($230) no earlier than 200-250 thousand kilometers. The main thing is not to skimp on renewing the Diamond SP III gear oil every 60-70 thousand kilometers (also from the Mitsubishi diet, ten dollars per liter) along with the filter.

And don’t get confused: in copies of the first years of production, the “automatic” may not want to rise above the third stage simply because of the unauthorized jump of the lever from position “D” to “3”. At first, dealers even started replacing the entire selectors, but quickly learned to simply bore a hole for the locking rod.

The six-speed A6GF1 gearbox from 2009, added in 2014 during restyling, is paired with a faster 1.6 engine. But its valve body is much more sensitive to both overheating and oil purity - its quality needs to be checked at least once every 30-40 thousand kilometers and certainly changed no less often than in a four-speed unit. By the mileage of 140-150 thousand kilometers you will need to update the gaskets and seals, and then you can expect troubles with the clutches ($180) and the torque converter lock-up clutch. And some of the cars produced in 2015 were not lucky with this particular box: they were equipped with the wrong right-hand drive shafts ($200). The rattling drives then had to be replaced during a service campaign.

CV joint boots ($40 for a set of original ones and from ten for replacements) after 60-80 thousand kilometers can begin to poison the lubricant from any of the transmissions.

But the “mechanics” itself... The M5CF1 five-speed gearbox does not have much safety margin. And if the younger 1.4 engine gives her a better chance of living to an old age, then with the lively 1600 cc engine the box is literally on fire at work.

It happened that very young units began to shuffle like an old man: the race of the input shaft bearing was turning in the crankcase. Do you remember our adventures with the bulkhead during the “resource”? The ring gears of the gear, synchronizer clutch and third stage locking ring are heavily worn. And the main weakness is the third gear locking ring, where, for a reason unknown to science, the designers used an unusual and wearable plastic coating on the friction surface. During normal operation, the same thing often happens: the gearbox can crunch and resist when switching after a run of 120-140 thousand kilometers.

The problem was solved radically by replacing the 1.6 engine’s five-speed gearbox in mid-2014 with a six-speed M6CF1 that better copes with its character. There are indeed fewer troubles, and the legacy is perhaps the most durable release bearing ($30 branded and tens of analogues) and the periodically arising (usually not earlier than 100 thousand kilometers) need to adjust the cable drive of the gear selection mechanism.

The cause of squeaks coming from behind may be hidden in the strap fastenings of the plastic gas tank.

The suspension was too soft at first, and the first Solaris sedans were the ones that swiveled the most (hatchbacks with a lighter sirloin initially behaved more decently). Since the end of 2011, the characteristics have changed three times (information and) - as a result, the diameter of the rod of the rear springs has increased, and the Mando shock absorbers have been made stiffer. But this did not affect the mileage of the suspension. The rear shock absorbers ($45 for branded ones and from $25 for famous analogues) withstand the same 70-80 thousand kilometers, and then, closer to 100 thousand, the front shock absorbers also get tired ($100 and $50, respectively). For pre-restyling cars older than 2014, along with the struts, their flimsy plastic support bearings (eight dollars each) have to be changed - later their material was changed to a more durable one.

The rear suspension was let down more by the settings rather than the reliability.

Closer to the same first hundred, stabilizer bushings (ten dollars each) and steering ends (branded ones, $25 each, and five or more for analogues) may come in handy in bulk. And cars no older than 2015 have stabilizer struts that are better protected from dirt (from 30 dollars and from eight dollars, respectively), which previously sold out twice as fast. At the same time, the ball joints of the front arms were also modified (only $55 per arm assembly), which began to outlast the silent blocks with their service life of 110-130 thousand kilometers. And the joints of the rear beam (50 dollars for the original silent block and three times less for an analogue) can endure up to 180-200 thousand kilometers. Just don’t confuse the sounds made by... a gas tank walking on uneven surfaces with the knocks and creaks of the suspension! In 2015, we even had to carry out service educational work with its fastenings.

At first, hub bearings were completely consumable: dealers often updated the front ones (for 35 dollars original and from 15 dollars analogues) after only 15-30 thousand kilometers. And the rear ones (55 and 35 dollars respectively) did not last much longer. In 2013, their size was increased and protection from dirt was improved, resulting in a multifold increase in survivability. And keep in mind: the play of the front wheel relative to the steering knuckle in early copies is not always caused by a broken bearing - the reason may lie simply in a crushed exotic plastic washer between the drive and the hub. This product is designed to combat noise, which it does successfully on European roads, but here it simply flattens out - a simple tightening of the drive shaft mounting nut can provide first aid, and dealers removed these washers as part of a service campaign, just in case.

The steering also caused a lot of trouble at first. Warranty replacements for knocking and leaking racks ($1,150) began almost simultaneously with the start of sales of the cars themselves, and already in 2012 it was necessary to launch a service campaign to repair the unit with a specially designed repair kit with bushings and stops.





It happened that dealers also replenish their stocks of power steering pumps ($230), which failed after 50-80 thousand kilometers - before a leak or a hum, a pulsation on the steering wheel could be a harbinger of its imminent demise. And if the pump or “rack” turned out to be out of work, the tight rotation of the steering wheel or knocking was treated by replacing the steering shaft ($100) due to the cardan joint in the joint.

A grueling struggle, which made it possible to almost forget about the “steering” problems, was waged on all fronts: in 2012, the rapidly breaking rack stop from plastic became metal; in 2014, the material of the bushing was also changed, and the spool was modified. Then the turn came to the shaft: the fixed cardan was replaced with a telescopic one, and a year later the steering column itself was modernized ($250).

In 2014, the Hyundai Solaris was updated: the headlights became sharper, the signature hexagon disappeared from the front end, the radiator grille became larger, and LEDs were installed in the rear lights. And a year later, the co-platform Kia Rio was also rejuvenated, changing the foglights with running lights, headlights and radiator grille

So it’s better to take Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio after restyling, which eliminated many annoying little things - no older than 2014 and 2015, respectively. In terms of reliability, these are similar to their classmate Skoda Fabia - that is, there are enough questions for them, but few serious ones. And the prices are just as attractive - from 380 thousand rubles.

Experts Autoreview about Hyundai Solaris or Kia Rio cars

On the move, both sedans, Hyundai Solaris or Kia Rio with 1.6 engines, equipped with automatic transmissions, are glitchy. When you sharply press the accelerator, the engine “shuts up” and the driver is deprived of the expected acceleration, which may not be the most pleasant surprise when overtaking. In the case of Kia, this manifested itself once - at a speed of about 70 km/h, and Hyundai stumbled five or six times, but also as God knows: it was not possible to cause a “plug” to order.

We liked the Kia's handling a little better. The car is stable on a high-speed straight line, road unevenness does not cause deviations from the trajectory even in turns, and the force on the steering wheel is always clear and informative. Among the roughnesses are only sluggish reactions at low speeds and their slight duality, due to the pliable Goodyear UltraGrip Extreme tires.

With the same rear shock absorbers as those of the Rio, the Solaris rides clearly more reliably than with the previous soft ones. But here’s a mystery: in a broken corner, the rear axle will swerve. This effect can no longer be called dangerous, but Rio does not have it at all! In addition, the Hyundai reacts more sharply to ruts and bumps on a straight line, and the steering wheel after the Kia seems stingy with feedback, especially in the near-zero zone.

I bought a Hyundai Solaris sedan with a 1.6 engine and a manual transmission new in May 2012 - I chose it because of its appearance and the timing chain, because I had no desire to change the belt twice a year. After all, I travel a lot: now my mileage has exceeded half a million kilometers!

I decided not to spend money on service from an official dealer - I did everything myself if possible, and changed the engine oil strictly once every 15 thousand kilometers.

The first 170 thousand kilometers did not require anything other than oil, filters, spark plugs and pads, but then a noise appeared near the drive belt when cold. With a mileage of 210 thousand kilometers, we got around to changing the tension roller, and the belt itself - later, at 240 thousand.

Then, at 408 thousand kilometers, the battery charge light on the dashboard came on - I removed the generator and, together with my father, attached brushes from some old vacuum cleaner to it: they only needed to be ground down a little to the required size and soldered in instead of the factory ones.

When the odometer showed a beautiful 444 thousand, a hum appeared from the rear right wheel - I pulled out the wedging caliper piston and treated it with sandpaper. With a mileage of 473 thousand kilometers, the leaking oil seal of the manual transmission coated the clutch disc with oil - it had to be changed, and at the same time the oil in the box. For the first time, by the way, - after all, according to the service book, it is designed for the entire service life.

The next breakdown was a humming wheel bearing of the front left wheel at 492 thousand kilometers, after 509 thousand one of the ignition coils failed. And now, at 525 thousand kilometers, I discovered a worn-out silent block of the rear right shock absorber.

I have never climbed into the engine yet: the oil level at the moment, after 15 thousand kilometers, drops from the maximum mark to the middle of the dipstick, that is, topping up is not necessary. Even the valve clearances have not yet required adjustment.

There were no problems with the steering rack either. But the Solaris really doesn’t hold the road well: it sways very easily even in the wind, and it’s uncomfortable to drive at high speeds.

Of course, with half a million miles on it, I’m already thinking about changing my car. But even though Solaris hasn’t really let me down, I’m not looking towards the new one - because of its greatly increased price. Although, if it were really possible to get Solaris in the minimum configuration for the “advertising” 599 thousand rubles, I would choose it. And so - Renault Logan or Lada Priora.

Both Rio and Solaris, even with a small impact to the front or rear, many plastic elements are damaged: headlight lugs, radiator grille, side bumper mounts and much more. And nothing can be restored. And the body metal is very thin and is subject to deformation even from small pebbles. And we regularly have to deal with additional sound insulation - the most complaints are about the wheel arches.

The chain of our most frequent guest, the 1.6 engine, in most cases does not cause problems up to 150 thousand kilometers. But spark plugs require replacement every 15 thousand kilometers: a longer interval threatens the failure of the ignition coils.

If any more or less handy car enthusiast can handle changing the oil and filter in a four-speed automatic transmission on his own (the most difficult thing is to unscrew the pan), then the six-speed automatic needs to be serviced in a workshop. The oil can be pumped out completely, including the torque converter, only with a special apparatus, using the displacement method.

Depending on operating conditions, the steering rack may begin to knock even after 50 thousand kilometers, and the cost of a wheel alignment will have to be added to its installation price.

But for the problem of body sway, we found an unexpected solution. One day, when replacing the rear shock absorbers, they discovered a broken coil on one of the springs. The customer also complained about insufficient ground clearance, especially when fully loaded. The diameter of the springs turned out to be similar to those installed on the VAZ-2109. By cutting the coils, we found the optimal ratio of height and load - and even with a large amount of load, Solaris with nine-wheel springs behaves better.

Due to their popularity, Rio and Solaris are stolen. They are stolen both for disassembly and sale in parts, and “under documents” - in order to make a so-called double and sell on the secondary market. Therefore, the verification must be taken extremely seriously.

The body number (aka VIN number) for both cars is located under the front passenger seat: a rectangular hole is cut into the carpeted floor, where the treasured seventeen characters are visible. This arrangement of the license plate is extremely inconvenient for checking and greatly facilitates the work of car thieves, who most often change the entire license plate panel - an amplifier attached on one side to the threshold and the other side to the central tunnel. Even traces of loosening on the passenger seat fastening bolts should alert you (although it could have been removed for some kind of repair or installation of additional sound insulation).

And in order to fully check the body number, you need to remove the sill trim, lift the floor covering and, with a flashlight, inspect the entire part and the places where it is attached to adjacent panels. In addition to the polymer marking plate located on the central pillar on the driver's side, do not be lazy to check the engine number with the data in the vehicle title. It is marked on the cylinder block, and you will need a mirror and a flashlight to inspect it.

Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio are some of the most liquid cars on the secondary market, and the number of offers in Moscow and the Moscow region alone is more than two thousand. Sedans are in noticeably greater demand than hatchbacks. It’s also curious that more than a third of all cars on the market are gray or silver.

This is exactly the gray hatchback we found for Auto Review. Moreover, the body type played into our hands, since five-door cars are practically not used in taxis and are more often bought by the female audience. So our 2011 Hyundai Solaris with the more popular 1.6 engine and manual transmission turned out to be exactly in this category. Despite the year of manufacture, the mileage is only 51 thousand kilometers. During its entire operation, it has never been in an accident, although the only drawback is minor wear on the body - later we hope to earn 400 thousand rubles for this car.

By the way, copies cheaper than this particular threshold were almost universally used in taxis, have a dubious history, or were involved in accidents. There have been cases when even well-known official showrooms sold cars from taxis under the guise of cars from private owners. And so the main problems when choosing and buying Solaris and Rio are a large number of resellers and many “checkerboard” cars after poor-quality repairs, with painted elements that do not match the body color.
