The most comfortable SUV in the world. Reliable frame SUVs

Crossovers are becoming increasingly popular on domestic roads, giving their owners the opportunity not only to breathe exhaust fumes in city traffic jams, but also to engage in active recreation, travel out of town and travel around the country and abroad in comfort. In order for our reader to decide on the choice of a car that is suitable for him personally, we have prepared our rating of crossovers in terms of reliability and quality 2018-2019 in Russia.

First of all, we suggest that you decide on the tasks that the crossover will help you solve. In total, the best crossovers should be divided into three types:

  • Compact SUVs designed for urban environments, but more off-road than sedans and less expensive to use than their larger counterparts;
  • Medium-sized SUVs that can already confidently cope with off-road conditions, but still do not consume 20 liters per 100 kilometers;
  • And a full-size SUV, whose task is to transport the maximum possible number of passengers or cargo and confidently pass sections of the road that smaller vehicles cannot handle.

Mercedes GLC

Reliable premium crossover. This car is very popular among wealthy buyers, and also receives constant praise from auto experts, and this is not surprising. In addition to the stylish and aggressive design that catches your eye at first glance, the car also has something to surprise you with in its technological component.

Permanent all-wheel drive with electronic stabilization allows the owner not to think about the vehicle’s capabilities when driving beyond the quality of the road surface. Extremely worthy electronic filling will allow you not to waste your nerves when parking on the crowded streets of big cities. Very modest fuel consumption, about 7 liters per hundred, will make even the owners lick their lips in 2017-2018. But you will have to pay a tidy sum for it - starting from 3,000,000 rubles, not everyone can afford it.

BMW X6

Don’t say that you didn’t turn your head on the street looking at this “monster” when the German concern just started supplying it to Russia. The driving comfort of this car is truly unprecedented, which Bavarian engineers achieve with a huge number of electronic options such as a navigation system or a night vision system. Fuel consumption is quite moderate for a car of this size and class - 8.5 liters in mixed mode or 11.5 in the city.

The weak points of the lucky ones who own this car include the suspension, but we will include the price, almost four million for the starting configuration - this is a serious blow to the budget. But if you are not embarrassed by the financial issue, then you will not regret the choice you made.

Another German concern and another premium crossover. Solid dimensions and the famous Audi quality give a feeling of complete reliability behind the wheel, and the aesthetically verified design immediately demonstrates that the car owner belongs to the wealthy class.

Moderate fuel consumption in mixed mode, as well as high suspension even by class standards and an impressive trunk volume provide the opportunity for comfortable travel both with the family and in a male company of hunters or fishermen. The average cost is already somewhat less than that of its predecessors - about 2,400,000 rubles, which is not little, but you have to pay for comfort and safety.

Subaru Forester

We've finally reached the Japanese automakers. If you are choosing between an economical and reliable crossover, then you don’t have to do this at all thanks to the Subaru Forester. Excellent all-wheel drive makes the car very popular among those who like long trips around the country without thinking about the vehicle's cross-country ability.

The design of the Forester is no longer so bright and attractive compared to German crossovers, but not everyone considers this an important property of an SUV, the primary task of which is good cross-country ability and comfort. The cost of the car is a subject of debate - should a car that does not pretend to be a luxury cost about 1,800,000? If you choose an SUV, then I would say no. But in the case of active off-road activities, this is a great choice.

Honda CR-V

But with Honda the situation is the opposite - if you mainly drive in urban conditions on good roads, then this model will give a head start even to its expensive brothers from German automakers. A hydraulic clutch in the rear axle makes driving around the city, even at high speeds, absolutely comfortable and silent.

The downside, as you understand, is the direct functionality of an SUV - the ground clearance of 170mm is not serious by the standards of the Russian landscape and the quality of the roads leaves much to be desired. A two-liter Honda in its basic configuration will cost 1,500,000 rubles, which makes it a good choice as a good city crossover.

KIA Sportage

And now we have reached representatives of the class, which in Russia is known as a crossover - this is a small compact SUV that has a number of advantages of its larger colleagues. I would like to immediately note that, like other KIA models, the Sportage shows excellent results in terms of environmental friendliness, safety and comfort. Nimble and assertive, this crossover will be an excellent choice for city driving, and fuel consumption in the city of about 10 liters will be a pleasant bonus for your wallet.

Another pleasant aspect is the price for this car, which starts at 1,200,000.

Toyota RAV4

An SUV that has long been loved by domestic car enthusiasts. Simplicity of design is sometimes cited as a negative, but Toyota's conservatism has its own elegance. Easy to drive and with good suspension, this crossover will be a good travel companion, which will also be helped by the extremely capacious trunk.

The price for this model starts from 1,280,000 rubles, which, given the current exchange rate, seems a fair price to pay for comfort and convenience. You shouldn’t expect envious looks in urban conditions, but if you get into a serious scrape in the wilderness, many will envy the owners of the Toyota RAV4.

Volkswagen Tiguan

The youngest of the family of SUVs from Volkswagen is loved by Russian drivers much more due to its modest price, starting at 1,200,000, and there is a lot to pay for. The electronic filling was inherited from the Tuareg, which means that the car is equipped to the highest standard - TDI and TSI technologies, a DSG robotic transmission with dual clutch - all this will add a pleasant experience to driving this practical car.

Fuel consumption, as well as the price of the car itself, are pleasantly pleasing, but the fact that the crossover was assembled in the Kaluga region, and not in German factories, may not leave the most pleasant impressions, especially since the Germans themselves managed to make a mistake when designing the engine compartment, which is why It can only be clean at a car dealership.

Nissan Quashqai

The compact crossover, which comes in both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive versions, will not leave indifferent fans of inexpensive crossovers for urban environments. Despite its visually small dimensions, the car can accommodate up to 7 people, which will appeal to fans of family vacations.

This model is traditionally included in the lists of the best-selling cars both in Russia and in Europe, which is not surprising - the price starts from a million rubles and this is certainly one of the best offers on the market for lovers of a measured and leisurely drive towards the dacha. You shouldn’t have sky-high expectations for this model, but it will cope with its direct functions with a bang.

VolvoXC90

Let's dilute the hegemony of German and Japanese manufacturers with the Swedish flagship from Volvo. The advantages are traditional for this brand - you will not find a car that has received more safety awards. The seemingly huge interior is controlled quite well thanks to the excellent 6-speed automatic transmission, and then driving in any conditions will be tough for this SUV.

The disadvantage is also understandable for Volvo - you are unlikely to want to purchase this car if for such a significant amount - from 3,500,000 rubles, you want to get the drive and emotions from aggressive driving. Volvo, in principle, does not consider this indicator as important, and therefore continues to primarily improve the safety and comfort of passengers, which it copes with at an unattainable level.

We hope that our rating of the most reliable crossovers of 2017-2018 will help you decide on the choice of the car that best suits your needs. The main thing is not to forget that with a thorough analysis of the offer on the market, you will certainly be able to find a car that will help you both in the city and in difficult terrain. Thank you for your attention and good luck on the roads!

The automotive world today is represented by many classes that satisfy the different needs of drivers. One of these segments is SUVs. Cars of this kind are chosen not only because of their versatility in everyday life, but also for their limitless possibilities in terms of travel and outdoor activities.

Today in the car market, the buyer is faced with a fairly large selection of these all-terrain vehicles, because every self-respecting automobile company wants to offer its own vehicle to drivers. But, unfortunately, most of these cars cannot be called full-fledged SUVs; they are more likely to be described differently, namely road cars with installed functions for a slight increase in cross-country ability.

To understand which companies produced the most reliable jeeps in the world, we need to delve a little deeper into history. Initially, these types of cars were designed for military purposes. Automobile brands were therefore forced to design not only an all-terrain vehicle, but also to make it as reliable, safe and easy to maintain as possible. And in this regard, it is better to consider precisely those models that were first made for army orders, and later became civilian ones.

Toyota Land Cruiser – TLC is a real long-liver of the SUV market.

Toyota Land Cruiser

Like most SUVs, Toyota began production of its Land Cruiser in 1950, just as there was demand for light military all-terrain vehicles due to the Korean War. After producing the first hundred cars for military orders, the Japanese continued production of this model further, but as completely civilian cars.

And for more than 60 years, the company has continued to produce its legendary and world-famous SUV, which pleases car enthusiasts around the world.

Today, those wishing to purchase such a vehicle have plenty to choose from. If you want to purchase a new car, you can contact an authorized dealer. However, you will have to pay significantly more for a new car. That's why most people buy a car second-hand.

The most popular Land Cruisers on the secondary market remain the models produced in the 90s and 2000s, namely the Toyota land cruiser 100 and 80 models. By purchasing such a car, you get an excellent and reliable vehicle. Also, these cars were famous not only for their reliability, but also for safety for the driver and passengers, so these types of units are perfect for family people.

In terms of off-road performance, the Land Cruiser has all-wheel drive with only the center differential locked. As for the suspension, on the Land Cruiser 80 it will consist of two axles - front and rear. On the one hand, such a design is considered obsolete today and significantly reduces the car’s handling; on the other hand, it is famous for its reliability, ease of maintenance, and durability.

As for engines, only V-shaped eights were installed in Cruisers; there were both gasoline and diesel versions. All Toyota engines were extremely reliable, so there were never any serious problems with them. In addition, if necessary, owners can always easily find any necessary parts today.

In general, Land Cruisers 80 and 100 remain popular today not only among ordinary drivers, but also among off-road enthusiasts due to their reliability and off-road performance.

Nissan Patrol: technical specifications

Another representative of SUVs from the land of the rising sun is a car from Nissan. They began producing their jeep in 1951, and the main task was to compete with the Toyota brand. For almost the entire time, the car's base did not change. The engineers used exclusively heavy frame construction and continuous axles. The power units used were unpretentious and reliable engines; there were both diesel and gasoline versions.

There is no point in considering the entire history of the brand; little has changed in it during the history of the Patrol. Let's immediately move on to the most popular generations in our market. In terms of purchasing a car for the purpose of looking for off-road adventures, car enthusiasts most often purchase cars of the fourth or fifth generation. Considering various options on the secondary market, a potential buyer can choose different types of car body.

The Patrol was produced in both extended and shortened versions, which, due to their base, had excellent ability to overcome obstacles on off-road. Everything is clear with the suspension on these cars: a heavy, reliable frame structure with which there were no problems.

In terms of engines, both diesel and gasoline power units were installed in the fourth generation. The most reliable engine installed in those days was a 4.2-liter diesel engine. This six-cylinder unit was easy to maintain and reliable. Another advantage of this engine was excellent torque from the bottom, which is appreciated by off-road enthusiasts. Also in some versions one could find the presence of a turbine on these engines, which gave an increase in power and torque.

When purchasing the fourth generation Patrol, it is advisable, of course, to consider a car with a TD42 engine, because the other diesel engine had a weak point associated with the cylinder head gasket, so it is not advisable to risk purchasing such a car. Gasoline engines were carbureted and outdated, so they had very high fuel consumption. Regarding gearboxes, sometimes there were also problems with 5-speed manual transmissions; over time, problems could arise with 5th gear. The Patrol's all-wheel drive was rigidly connected, with a rear differential lock.

In the fifth generation, the base of the car remained the same, with major changes in those. component of the car, one could notice an expanded range of new engines. There was still a version with the legendary TD42. The diesel line was supplemented by 2.8 and three liter engines, both of which were turbocharged. The most interesting were V-eight with a volume of 4.5 and 4.8 liters. The first engine was available only on the pre-restyling Patrol. It was the most powerful engine in the lineup, and like any V-8, it had excellent low-end torque, which made it easy to overcome obstacles. With the updated SUV, Nissan decided to give consumers another engine legendary for its reliability, namely the TB48DE.

Therefore, to summarize the Nissan Patrol, we can say that it is certainly advisable to consider the fifth generation for purchase, because it eliminated various problems associated with the gearbox, and there was also a greater choice among engines.

Mitsubishi Pajero 2

If we take the Pajero for consideration as an SUV, then it is advisable to consider the second generation, because it still had a full-fledged frame structure, which was later integrated into the car body itself.

Pazhdero 2 was produced from '91 to '99. During this time, a lot of different versions of this car were released into the world. Specifications M Itsubishi Pajero was impressive at one time: the cars had an excellent frame design and all-wheel drive, which was implemented using the Super Select transmission, new at that time.

At the very beginning of sales, only two engines were available. Gasoline V-6 with a volume of 3 liters and a turbodiesel with a volume of 2.5 liters. Later, the gasoline engine was subjected to various modifications related to the cylinder head, due to which the technical characteristics of the power unit were increased. Also on the updated versions of the 2nd generation, engines with an increased internal combustion engine volume of up to 3.5 liters and a new fuel supply system were available, making the car even more efficient.

When considering a Mitsubishi Pajero for purchase, it is advisable to consider a car after the 93rd year of production. Because they were equipped with a more modern suspension, torsion bar in the front and longitudinal on two arms in the rear, which had a positive effect on the level of comfort when moving. There are no serious problems with the engines; it is advisable to simply change the oil and filter regularly, and also monitor the temperature of the engines.

There were also no serious complaints about the all-wheel drive; the only problem that could arise was mainly related to the pneumatic locking of the rear differential.

Mercedes-Benz G-class

The German representative from the Mercedes company is deservedly considered one of the most legendary SUVs of all time. Since this is still a Mercedes, Gelendvagen can boast of its high level of comfort and rich optional equipment. Today it makes sense to consider only the 463 body, which went into production in 1990. Since then, it is this generation that has reached the present day. There are almost no visual differences between the cars of the 90s and 2017. Therefore, the G-class can be called relevant to this day.

The SUV from Mercedes was perfectly prepared for off-road conditions right from the factory; the cars had all-wheel drive and had all the locks that usually help to overcome serious obstacles or fords. The suspension, both front and rear, consisted of a continuous axle, making it quite reliable.

For engines from 90 to 2000, buyers always had a large choice; there were 3 gasoline units and 3 diesel ones. If we consider gasoline options, then you should pay attention to the M104 engine. This was a good six-cylinder engine with a volume of 3.2 liters. The main thing this engine is afraid of is overheating, if you monitor the temperature and the normal performance of the cooling systems, there will be no serious problems with it. It is also worth paying attention to the five-liter M117. This engine had an excellent torque of 400 Nm, but one of the drawbacks was its gluttony.

But among diesel engines, only the 3.5 liter turbo engine stands out as a diesel engine, the main advantage of which was torque. Of the problem areas that had to be monitored, it was only the turbine.

On the one hand, Gelendvagen is an excellent SUV that is definitely worth considering. On the other hand, the maintenance and upkeep of this vehicle will be quite expensive, so before purchasing you need to carefully weigh the pros and cons. A Mercedes Gelendvagen test drive will help you get to know this famous SUV in more detail:

Land Rover Defender

The British company LR produces off-road vehicles. In fact, almost every SUV they make has amazing off-road capability. However, the main all-terrain vehicle can be called a model called Defender. It was also initially produced for military purposes, and later became civilian. And while the jeeps described above are still produced to this day, production of the Land Rover Defender was, unfortunately, stopped, so you can buy it either on the secondary market or leftovers from brand dealers.

In appearance and appearance, and in general in the image of the Defender, one thing can be said for sure - this is an uncompromising real all-terrain vehicle. Excellent cross-country ability is ensured by reliable, constant full, huge ground clearance and minimal body overhangs. From the factory, without various modifications, the car can easily overcome half-meter fords.

Under the hood, a 2.5-liter diesel engine with a power of only 122 hp was most often installed. It was also possible to order two V-8s of 3.5 and 3.9 liters. All of these engines cannot be called powerful, but instead they had good torque available from low revs, which gave these cars an advantage off-road.

Due to the fact that the design of this car was completely simple and sometimes even archaic, the Defender was a very reliable car. And even when buying a car in factory condition, you can easily go off-road and not think that you will get stuck somewhere. However, the other side of the coin of this car can be called this uncompromisingness. The Defender's interior is spartan and even uncomfortable at times. Therefore, such a car is not suitable for everyone to drive every day.

Bottom line

The only advice that can be given before buying an LR Defender is to take your time. It is advisable to drive such a car for at least a week in order to understand its philosophy and only then make a final decision. If the Defender still doesn’t suit you, you can always consider a Land Rover or even a Range Rover.

To the question of which SUV is the most reliable, economical, inexpensive, you will not find a definite answer. Some representatives of the auto industry, for example, sacrifice cross-country ability for the sake of comfort and catchy design. Others stuff their products with high-tech developments, making their cost prohibitive. However, among SUVs there are two conditional categories in which the most trouble-free and least expensive vehicles are located. They were chosen in our rating by reviews and requests from car owners and drivers, that is, life itself.

Secrets of choice and preferences

When purchasing a new or used car, the client is guided by such qualitative indicators of the future purchase as:

  1. Good quality.
  2. Safety.
  3. Multifunctionality.
  4. Affordability.

Making the right decision in such an important mission is very difficult, since all-terrain vehicles with the listed properties have high-quality assembly, a balanced amount of expensive branded “tricks” and electronics.

It is worth saying that currently the concept of an SUV is blurred. These include frame superjeeps and full-size SUVs, and in some cases even compact crossovers. However, we will call all the mentioned vehicles SUVs, because in some cases they have a set of features required for this.

The most reliable SUVs

The optimal samples selected for this rating, with civilized operation and sufficient care, will easily provide 300,000 mileage or 10 years of impeccable service. Any of them can be found on free sale in the Russian Federation, and not a single one has been discontinued at the moment.

A massive 7-seater elite class car. It is equipped with a V-shaped engine with a simply fantastic volume of 8 cylinders - 6.2 liters and a corresponding power - 410 hp. Transmission: GM Hydra-Matic 6L80 6-speed automatic transmission. Generation III reaches 100 km/h in 6.5-6.7 seconds. depending on the drive type. There is an independent suspension with stabilizers at the front, and a wishbone with a spring at the rear. All together provides this “armored car” with optimally soft and delicate movement even in off-road conditions. Demonstrated confident behavior in the Chilean desert, Russian taiga, Canadian tundra, African jungle and Tibetan highlands. Made in Texas. According to Russian statistics, in addition to St. Petersburg and Muscovites, this solid option is preferred by residents of the Volga region.

A relatively compact but comfortable 2-4 door pickup truck with a 5.3 liter engine producing 315 hp. and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The layout is front-engine, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. It is distinguished by a monumental exterior with headlights organically integrated into the radiator grille, where LED daytime lamps are also included. It is equipped with disc brakes at the front and drums at the rear, which is why the vehicle is successfully used both in populated areas and on problematic roads in the outback. It has long been chosen by wealthy fishermen and hunters. However, the car is relatively inexpensive and is accessible to representatives of the middle class, because it is considered a budget all-terrain vehicle. Unpretentious in maintenance and repair service. Collected in Venezuela, Canada, Mexico and the USA.

A practical family “mid-budget car”, which is equipped with a 2.3 liter diesel engine, designed for 190 hp, as well as a 7-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission. The total curb weight of the Japanese heavyweight is 3.24 tons, the fuel tank volume is 80 liters. The acceleration dynamics of a pickup truck are similar to those of a sports car. The Russian secondary market is especially densely saturated with this model of SUVs, because Domestic car enthusiasts are impressed by the sophistication and style of the Nissan J-segment. Experts recognize the main advantage as extraordinary endurance and load-carrying capacity, increased cross-country ability, good cornering stability, as well as versatility of use and the absence of “turbo lag”. Locked differentials in low gear will take you out of the stickiest mud. The disadvantage is the limited capabilities of a pickup truck in everyday life.

Another pickup truck, among other things, has proven itself well in the savannas during operation, which is why it is recognized as an indispensable attribute of a modern African safari. The top spot here was lost to the famous Toyota Hilux in the last third of the last century. Thanks to all-wheel drive with a reduction gear and rear differential lock, it is popular in Russia among farmers, rangers and foresters. The “advanced” Intense package includes a 2.4-liter diesel turbo power unit with 181 hp sufficient for such a unit. and “automatic” (the device with a power of 154 hp is equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox). Thanks to the excellent insulation of the interior, the unit does not produce any increased noise or vibration. In the CIS it is found only with a 2-row cab. Since 2015, the V generation of the pickup truck (Triton) has been produced in Thailand.

Explorer is translated from English as “researcher”. Successfully replaced the Ranger of the same brand in this niche (which means “wanderer”, “tramp”, which fully deserved such a name). The frame structure was replaced by a load-bearing body. The front-wheel drive version is equipped with a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine with 237 hp, and a 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 with 294 hp. applies to all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive models. It is equipped with a single type of transmission in the form of a 6-speed automatic. Thanks to the timing chain drive, the American beauty can easily cover 300 thousand km or more without significant malfunctions. Features convenient adjustment of the steering wheel position. The car is designed for 7 passengers (Ranger could accommodate 5). Assembled in Louisville, Kentucky. The disadvantage is increased fuel consumption.

It has a 5.7 liter V8 engine with a potential of 367 hp, combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission (speeds can also be changed manually). Thus, the LX 570 is 54% more powerful than the LX 470. And the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere in this series is significantly less than its predecessor. The towing capacity is 3,850 tons. Stylishness, throttle response, good torque - these are the key advantages of this “car”. Among other advantages, it diligently overcomes steep climbs. Safety is provided by 10 airbags and special curtains for the second and third rows of seats. Another effective help is active head restraints for the front passenger and driver, seat belts, and a pressure control system in the slopes. The disadvantage is the overpriced, but this is a sign of all Lexuses: you have to overpay for a super brand.

According to last year’s analytics, this vehicle has become the most “survivable” representative of Russian roads by a wide margin. That is, among its all-wheel drive counterparts, it is the least in need of emergency and routine maintenance. The price-reliability balance of this SUV is almost perfect. For this reason, it has traditionally been popular in Russia since the late 90s (II generation, “90” family). The IV generation is equipped with a 1KD-FTV turbodiesel with a power of 173 hp, and a 1GR-FE gasoline engine with 282 hp. and a 1GD-FTV turbodiesel with 177 hp. There are 4 suspension operating modes: “sticky mud”, “gravel”, “stones”, “snow”). Transmissions: 5-speed manual transmission, 4-speed automatic transmission (with 2.7 liter engine) and 5-speed automatic transmission with manual option. The latest engines are equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The downside is that the engine is not powerful enough for a car of this class.

The car, despite its elegant (one might even say aristocratic) body, will give a head start to such resourceful compact crossovers as the Mitsubishi Outlander or Chevrolet Captiva over rough terrain. The models have engine compartments with modifications of 2 and 2.4 liters, as well as a sensitive turbocharged injection engine with a volume of 1.5 liters. An independent McPherson suspension is mounted in front. This car has trouble-free all-wheel drive, which is supposed to be equipped with a variable speed transmission (CVT). Let's add high-quality aerodynamics to the advantages. A negative property of the model is that it does not like slippery roads.

This is a classic of the Japanese automobile industry - a mid-size frame all-terrain vehicle. Equipped with a 3-liter V6 gasoline engine with 230 hp, as well as diesel engines: 4-cylinder with 2.4 liters, 180 hp. and 2.5 liters, 136 hp. Transmission: 5 and 6-speed manual transmissions or 5 and 8-speed automatic transmissions. It has the following technological developments: automated wipers, headlights with dusk sensors, climate control system, DVD screen for rear passengers, heated leather seats, parking sensors. Practical, perfect, flexible, safe. The SUV has an independent suspension at the front and a dependent suspension at the rear.

Along with the Grand Cherokee, it is recognized as the best-selling model among SUVs. Massive and overall, its front end looks like a ZIL-130. Practicality and increased comfort are the trump cards of the Kruzak. The car is well suited for our winter conditions. The cabin can comfortably accommodate 7 passengers. Suitable for driving around the city, over long distances and off-road. 4.5 liter diesel unit with a power of 235 hp, acceleration to “hundreds” in 8.9 seconds, fuel consumption per 100 km – 18 liters (city), 12 liters (highway), 15 liters (mixed). Gasoline unit 4.9 liters, 309 hp, 9 sec., respectively 25-15-18 liters. The gearbox is 6-speed. The car is equipped with permanent front-wheel drive. Despite its apparent rigidity, it moves smoothly and easily over sand, mountains, and snow; easily overcomes small water obstacles. This full-size SUV is produced exclusively in Japan. The disadvantage is that it is expensive to maintain, so operating this monster cannot be called economical.

We are trying to combine the concepts of “efficiency” and “SUV”

If everything is more or less clear with reliability, then when determining the most economical (or, as it is fashionable to say today, budget) off-road vehicle, things are more complicated.

An SUV in itself is a resource-intensive “toy”, so it seems inappropriate to talk about savings in this class, and yet...

So, the lion's share of auto costs goes to refueling. And over time, the demand for “homes on wheels”, which absorbed from 15 to 20 liters per “hundred”, becomes less and less relevant. Therefore, when choosing the most economical SUVs, fuel consumption served as a key criterion. And modern SUVs are able to bring pleasure to the owner of a large body for much less money than 20 years ago.

On the other hand, it makes no sense to purchase a representative of the mentioned market segment if it is not able to accelerate dynamically and is not all-season, all-weather and all-terrain. In general, these are truly impressive all-terrain vehicles, which can nevertheless provide low fuel consumption. We are talking about versions that “eat” less than 10 liters per 100 km.

A full-fledged SUV manufactured by Audi from Germany, delighting connoisseurs of exquisite automotive equipment since 2005. Consumes 8.4 liters of gasoline. The second generation modification is called TDI Ultra. It has a 3-liter V6 turbo engine that develops 218 hp. From 0 to 100 km/h it takes 7 seconds, the top speed reaches 216 km/h. Combined cycle consumption is only 5.5 liters, which is 28% lower than its first generation predecessor. Carbon dioxide emissions per 1 km are equal to 144 g. Such pleasure costs €58 thousand. In this regard, the model has one drawback - the expensive selling price of the product. Thus, the cost of the hybrid version of the Audi Q7 e-tron quattro in Europe starts from €81 thousand.

A real gift from Volkswagen for zealous owners. Coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission, a 3-liter diesel engine is capable of providing a potential of 200 horsepower. And at the same time, only 8.2 liters are consumed - an amazing result for such a heavyweight! The body is manufactured in Bratislava (Slovakia), along with the Cayenne. Weak points - freezing condensate clogging air suspension pipes; The battery drains quickly, the rear fenders have a weak protective coating.

A worthy member of the famous VAG Group luxury family. For a 3-liter Porsche brainchild with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 8 liters is enough. This is a better indicator compared to the gasoline version of the Q7, and the dynamics of the large-sized Cayenne are much better - 5.4 seconds to “hundreds”. Now the Germans are promoting the third generation of the model. The disadvantage is a lot of unnecessary electronic assistants, which are sometimes not needed.

A high-tech device that came off the assembly line of the transnational corporation Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (Jeep brand). In 2006, it was replaced by Patriot (not to be confused with the Russian “Patriot” of UAZ origin, these are just “namesakes”). Consumption rate is 8.6-9.9 liters depending on the cycle. Equipped with 1.4 liter gasoline engines (MultiAir P4) with a power of 170 hp. and 2.4 liters (Tigershark P4) with a power of 186 hp, as well as 2 liter diesel engines (MultiJet P4) with a power of 140 and 170 hp. Transmission in the form of a 9-speed automatic transmission. The current generation 2 car is quite rare, so it is especially valued by adherents of the famous brand. The main advantage is its amazing unpretentiousness in relation to Russian road realities. Disadvantage: supply interruptions in the retail chain.

Mid-size crossover, produced since 2001. The appetite of its 2.4-liter engine with 166 “horses” is relatively modest – 7.6 liters. The car is optimized to the utmost by Mitsubishi designers, which allowed the model to enter the TOP 10. III generation is available in 4 series: ES, GT SE, SEL. ES - the basic series with automated climate control, a keyless door unlocking system, a 140-watt CD/AM/FM audio system, Bluetooth and 18-inch alloy wheels. SE will add foglights, side rearview mirrors with indicator lights, 2-zone climate control and a start button. The SEL comes with a roof rail, leather seats and a heated driver's seat. The GT series will add to the consumer the possibility of all-wheel drive with a V6 power unit, remote opening of the luggage compartment, an audio installation with 9 speakers, automated headlights, electric side view mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, as well as flags for manual gear shifting.

BMW is not lagging behind in the pursuit of achieving maximum economic effect. Their 3-liter turbocharged design with an 8-speed gearbox, which has an output of 255 horsepower, can consume no more than 7.6 liters. Now the third generation is relevant, and the fourth generation is coming out. The advantage is that these are perhaps the longest intervals for replacing consumables; minus – unreasonably expensive spare parts.

A pleasant surprise from Subaru, which quickly gained popularity among Russians, especially Siberians. Along with other delights of the Forester, consumption at 7.35 liters can be considered a serious victory for the Japanese auto industry. Successful 2.5-liter engine with 170 hp. When combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission, it produces amazing functional results. This is perhaps the only car where throttle response, cross-country ability and democracy are harmoniously and almost perfectly integrated.

Another masterpiece of the Subaru concern. The basic configuration is equipped with a power plant with a cylinder capacity of 2 liters and a power potential of 148 “horses”; the gearbox is continuously variable. Consumes 7 liters. One of the significant advantages is the high ground clearance. A very useful X-Mode is provided, which allows you to adapt the operation of the engine with a stabilizing function to the road conditions. This makes it possible to successfully overcome arable land, swamps, tall grass, hummocks and shallow ditches. Alas, no information about the flaws or design imperfections of the Crosstrek was found on the Internet.

This prestigious mid-size SUV (5-door station wagon) has been produced since 2010. Incredibly, the monster produced by GMC consumes only 6.9 liters! Such wonderful savings are created by a 2.4, 3 and 3.6 liter V6 engine with a power of 180, 264 and 300 hp, respectively. It is complemented by a 6-speed automatic transmission. There is a front-engine, front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive layout. The internal functional equipment is taken as a basis from the Equinox; these models differ only in appearance and interior trim. The relatively small amount of gasoline consumption does not prevent the “American” from remaining roomy, practical and at the same time “sophisticated”. The five-seater cabin is quite suitable for picnics and country walks with an overnight stay. Collected in the Canadian province of Ontario.

And finally, the classic of the world “Jeep building” – Multijet, which consumes 6 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km. Its power is 140 hp, cylinder capacity is 2 liters. Weight: 1.8 tons. This is a self-sufficient all-wheel drive SUV. In addition, the later 2.2-liter version is available with 185 (Longitude and Longitude+ modifications) and 200 hp units. (Limited), as well as a 9-speed automatic transmission. Meets the Euro 6 standard. 4x4 Jeep Active Drive I version with 185 hp engine. has a top speed of 200 km/h and reaches 100 km/h in 8.8 seconds. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 5.7 liters, and the emission rate of harmful chemical compounds is 150 g/km. Option with 200 hp engine capable of developing 204 km/h, acceleration to “hundreds” – 8.5 seconds. Fuel consumption is similar.

Be that as it may, today's industrial trends are aimed at energy saving, and a peculiar psychological trait at the level of 6 l is far from the limit.

Reliability and efficiency are complex concepts, so it is impossible to name two absolute champions according to these criteria. They are reflected in another capacious quality - practicality. It means that:

  • Owners of such vehicles especially rarely resort to the help of auto repair shop personnel;
  • The listed machines are relatively inexpensive in their use.

And if a car enthusiast wants to buy the perfection of the automotive industry embodied in one copy, he will have to correlate his desires with the size of his wallet, his own aesthetic taste and the recommendations of experts in this regard.

We all have our favorite SUV brands. Some define them by price, others by appearance, others by country of origin. Today we will find out which crossover can be considered the most reliable. Of course, there are plenty of such cars.

First, let's dive into a little background on jeeps. When the SUV concept was first launched, people used them as pickup trucks and station wagons. But today, thanks to the latest developments and technological advancements, they have become one of the most popular cars in the world. Looking at the latest statistics, it can be seen that people prefer cars that are larger in size, have good fuel economy, and can also accommodate more passengers. The crossover fits perfectly into all of these categories, as a result of which this segment of the car market is more than widely represented.

According to the latest research conducted by the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), Jeeps are safer than they were literally 10-15 years ago. The widespread use of electronic stability control (EBS) has led to a reduction in the number of road accidents, as well as a reduction in button-pressing. There are many lists of the most reliable SUVs, but we present you with our ranking.

Which crossover is the most reliable, economical and inexpensive?

The term "Reliable SUV" covers a number of factors such as crash test scores, engine reliability, road grip and driving safety. Let's look at several cars that can undoubtedly be called the most reliable crossovers.

It has a good tradition of making good cars and being included in numerous ratings based on this criterion. The Japanese manufacturer aims to make this compact, economical SUV a good family car. It is safe to say that this goal was achieved. The new budget model has been well designed and looks stunning both outside and inside. The new CR-V has a 16-valve DOHC I-VTEC diesel engine with 4 cylinders for greater performance. With reliability as its top priority, the Japanese SUV features electronic power steering to keep passengers safe on tight turns. Honda designed its CR-V with Advanced Engineering so its occupants are protected from high-impact crashes. Every model in the CR-V series has been equipped with ample airbags, auto-tensioning seat belts, adjustable suspension and rollover sensors to make driving safe. Servicing such a car will not cost that much, which makes the CR-V an excellent budget all-wheel drive SUV. By the way, in Russia it is almost the most popular Japanese jeep.

A large, safe and inexpensive SUV from the Japanese auto giant. The key words in describing this car are reliability, safety and comfort. The Sequoia is perhaps the ideal choice for people with large families who prefer a simple body-on-frame crossover. The car is equipped with a 4.6- or 5.7-liter Force V8 DOHC 32-valve engine (and it doesn’t matter whether you fill it with diesel or gasoline). Options are available in both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive. There is plenty of room in the cabin for people, especially those sitting in the back. Why is the car reliable? The excellent Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system, Electronic Brake Assist (EBA) that keeps the car in check at high speeds, and eight airbags and rollover sensors make the Sequoia a fairly cheap choice for a reliable SUV. Perhaps one of the best branded analogues of Chinese cars.

A simple and economical Japanese Honda SUV will change your idea of what reliability is. It is better to describe it in the following words: inexpensive, budget and reliable. Best suited for those who prefer to carry a lot of things with them. The fact is that its suspension is very responsive and strong, which makes transporting any heavy loads on any roads incredibly comfortable. An excellent choice for those whose mileage will be 200,000 km or more. The car really looks big. But these are not all its advantages. As soon as you sit inside and take the wheel, you will immediately feel why this class of car is the best. And it's not just about the suspension. You will understand that this is not a simple cheap Chinese jeep, but a real, reliable and economical SUV. The 2.4-litre 4-cylinder VTEC diesel engine helps make every kilometer of your journey economical and low-maintenance. The car is available in 2WD or 4WD configuration and has 7 airbags to ensure the safety of the driver and passengers. EBS, daytime running lights and rollover sensors will convince you that this is a reliable choice.

The Traverse has secured a strong place in the top ten of most rankings. It is a favorite among customers who want to choose a car with plenty of legroom and ample luggage space. Well, this is definitely a great choice. Inexpensive to maintain, economical, and also not a cheap Chinese crossover. Traverse has the most interior space of any vehicle in its class. It has a 3.6-liter V6 diesel engine with variable valve timing (this is especially important for a diesel engine). AWD is a very safe choice. This budget model behaves obediently in rainy or cold conditions. Anti-lock brakes, improved traction control, airbags for the driver and passengers, and a high suspension make this 8-seat frame SUV extremely safe and also inexpensive, which makes it a choice for anyone who wants an inexpensive diesel crossover to maintain.

The all-wheel drive X5 received positive reviews from critics literally immediately after leaving the production line. This is not just a luxury car. This is the leader in most ratings of reliable crossovers in Russia. The X5 comes with a 3.0-liter 24-valve, 6-cylinder engine with TwinPower turbo technology. This is the first crossover in Russia, which experts began to define as the best all-wheel drive SUV. Of course, this is a masterpiece that cannot go unnoticed. He is the boss on any road. Good cross-country ability, large both outside and inside, it wins the hearts of car enthusiasts one after another. The AWD system performed by the German giant is one of the best in the world, which makes every trip with the car unforgettable. The IDrive system ensures that the driver has control over most of the vehicle simply by pressing a few buttons. The Jeep has front and side-impact airbags with front and rear seat sensors that are designed to avoid unnecessary airbag deployment. Automatic seat belts and head protection systems in areas most vulnerable in an accident, adjustable suspension... What else do you need to say that this crossover is the most reliable? Of course, its repair and maintenance become the main obstacle to purchasing, because not only is it not the cheapest, but it also costs a pretty penny to work with. But believe me, it's worth it.

The Tiguan is rightfully considered one of the most reliable cars in the world. It owes this to the traditionally high German build quality, perfectly balanced technical characteristics, and high survivability of the components and assemblies used in the design. Tiguan demonstrates equally good driving characteristics when driving on rough terrain and on metropolitan roads.

The automaker offers this model in two main modifications. Those who plan to use the car primarily in the city should pay attention to the crossover option with an 18-degree approach angle, which provides better aerodynamics. If the car is intended to be used more off-road, then it is more advisable to opt for a modification with a bumper beveled at the bottom. This geometric feature makes it easy to climb 28-degree slopes. The off-road version of the crossover is additionally equipped with protective elements and specialized electronic systems that will help you safely drive down a hill due to braking by the power unit.

The interior design of the Tiguan can be described in one word – impeccable. High-quality interior finishing materials are perfectly matched in color and carefully matched to each other. The dashboard contains only the necessary minimum of control elements, which significantly increases the ease of use. The Tiguan is powered by a turbocharged 2-liter diesel engine producing 140 hp. power, which is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

When choosing a versatile, reliable SUV that can handle highways like a sports car and handles rough terrain like there's asphalt under its wheels, you can't find anything better than the RAV4. All its components and assemblies function flawlessly under high loads, and the rigid body successfully withstands environmental influences.

The SUV is available in two main versions - with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, and is equipped with a manual or automatic transmission, which are highly reliable. The design of the manual transmission includes an electronic control unit; the automatic transmission is capable of operating in two main operating modes - sports or economical.

RAV4 owners note excellent handling as its main positive quality. The driver experiences absolutely no stress when driving at a speed of 160 km/h, the car accurately responds to turning the steering wheel, and there are no problems with changing lanes. The optional equipment of the SUV includes a self-locking differential, 16-inch wheels, fender flares, and a proprietary set of passive and active safety equipment. The RAV4 is powered by 2 and 2.4 liter petrol engines.

Initially, the Qashqai SUV attracted attention with its unusual appearance, and after some time this car acquired a reputation as a reliable, “robust” vehicle that does not create problems for its owners.

The car has a high ground clearance of 200 mm, is equipped with 7-inch wheels, and approach and departure angles are 30 and 19 degrees, respectively. The Qashqai comes with front-wheel drive as standard, but for an additional fee it will be equipped with a high-tech All-Mode all-wheel drive system. It can be turned on in the mode of transmitting torque to the front wheel axle and then the car will be able to demonstrate excellent driving characteristics on a flat road. When the Lock mode is turned on, the inter-axle clutch is blocked, the torque ratio between the axles is distributed in the ratio 57/3. But Qashqai owners may not even have to think about which operating mode to switch the transmission to at any given time, since the All-Mode system can be switched to Auto mode, in which it independently optimizes its operating parameters and often does it better driver.

In our country, the Qashqai is sold with a 114-horsepower gasoline engine. It can work with a 6 or 5-speed manual transmission, with a CVT or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

When looking for an all-terrain vehicle, you must first pay attention to premium class cars, since by default they must have exceptionally good build quality, be equipped with systems designed to optimize the operation of the mechanisms installed on board and, as a result, help extend their service life. The Mercedes GLK is just such an SUV; it has only one drawback - its high cost; in all other respects this car is impeccable.

The optional equipment of the Mercedes GLK is very extensive, it includes 19-inch wheels, climate control with two independent operating zones, servo-driven mirrors, seats, steering column, and power windows. In addition to traditional active systems, the PRE-SAFE complex is responsible for the safety of the driver and passenger, which in the event of a collision tightens the seat belts and sets the seat backs in a strictly vertical position. If desired, you can install an all-round viewing system on board the vehicle; the image from the cameras is transmitted to the monitor of the multimedia complex.

The Mercedes GLK engine line consists of several diesel and gasoline power plants with power from 143 to 306 hp. forces, automatic transmission with seven ranges.

The fewer bells and whistles installed in a car, the more reliable it is; if you choose a “strong” SUV based on this criterion, then Forester will become the most preferable option. This car has simple, laconic body lines, all interior elements are strictly functional, and on the front panel there are only those controls that are really necessary to control the car.

But such simplicity does not mean that it will be inconvenient to operate the Forester; on the contrary, its basic equipment includes everything that can facilitate the control process and make trips tireless and enjoyable. An acceptable temperature regime in the cabin is maintained by climate control, power windows and mirrors are equipped with a servo drive, and the doors are locked with a central lock. The car is equipped with an immobilizer, power steering, automatic ground clearance stabilization system, and cruise control. The seats are covered in genuine leather with fabric inserts; there are several convenient niches, glove compartments and cup holders distributed throughout the cabin.

The Subaru Forester is powered by a 158-horsepower gasoline engine, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. A more advanced modification of the car comes with a 2.5-liter engine and automatic transmission.

A crossover with a sporty character - this is how the SX4 can be briefly described. In terms of reliability, this model is significantly superior to its classmates; it can demonstrate good driving characteristics not only on a flat highway, but also on country roads. The development of this model was carried out on a platform that was increased in length, but retained its main quality - the ability to successfully resist high loads.

The automaker did not skimp on optional equipment; the base already includes 6 airbags, a brake force distribution system (EBD), a servo drive for all power windows, air conditioning, and a stabilization system (ESP). The high ground clearance of 190 mm and an intelligent all-wheel drive system help the car move off-road.

The Suzuki SX4 is powered by a 1.5-liter petrol engine producing 99 hp. forces, with a torque of 133 Nm. More advanced versions of the car are equipped with a 107-horsepower unit that develops 145 Nm of torque and a 120-horsepower engine. They are paired with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-range automatic transmission.

The Q5 can demonstrate a combination of high driving dynamics with good off-road driving characteristics. The car is equipped with a quattro all-wheel drive system, economical, highly efficient engines with a long service life. The practical operation of this model shows that if scheduled maintenance is carried out in a timely manner, it will practically not need repairs and will serve its owner flawlessly for a long time.

The Audi Q5 interior is decorated with premium materials; the options include an intelligent vehicle access system, automatic climate control divided into two operating zones, and an electromechanical parking brake. An MMI multimedia complex is installed in the cockpit, with a monitor on which you can receive images from the rear hemisphere camera.

The Audi Q5 line of power units consists of two diesel and one gasoline engines with a capacity of 155 hp. strength With this engine, the car can accelerate to hundreds in 7.2 seconds, with an average fuel consumption of 8.5 liters. Diesel engines produce power of 170 and 240 hp. acceleration dynamics will be less with them, but fuel consumption will be significantly reduced. A less powerful unit consumes an average of only 6.7 liters of diesel fuel, a more powerful diesel engine consumes an average of 7.7 liters of fuel.

Any car enthusiast, when asked about the most reliable SUV, will name the Explorer among others. It was this model that at one time provoked the fashion for SUVs, and as a result, many wonderful off-road vehicles appeared in the world, the demand for which does not decrease even today.

From year to year, Explorer invariably retains its leading position in terms of sales; at the moment, almost six million of these cars are driving around our planet, and this is evidence of not only popularity, but also reliability. The modern version of the SUV is equipped with an extensive list of safety features, including side air curtains, a rollover control system (RSC), and an AdvanceTrac stabilization system.

The cabin has luxurious, wide seats with good body support; all seats are equipped with a servo drive, using which you can quickly change the angle of the backrest. Under the hood of the Explorer there is an economical and at the same time powerful power unit with 292 hp. strength, it works in pairs with 6 automatic transmission.

The very first “city jeep” is the Suzuki Escudo, but this model is capable of moving not only along city streets, but also where roads basically do not exist. The car has a fairly high ground clearance and is equipped with a “4 mode full time 4WD” all-wheel drive system.

It will not be easy to damage the Escudo, since its body is reinforced with an additional metal frame, due to which the rigidity of the body and its ability to withstand dynamic multidirectional loads for a long time have significantly increased. The automaker is constantly modernizing this model and promptly adding more modern devices to the optional equipment. Therefore, the relevance of Escudo does not decrease; the car is popular and in consumer demand. The SUV is powered by 2 or 2.7-liter gasoline power plants. They can operate in pairs with a 5-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission.

There are SUVs that have proven their reliability and ability to effectively perform their assigned functions over time. The Nissan Patrol is one of these cars. Its production has been carried out for 50 years, with each subsequent modernization the car became more and more advanced. The composition of its optional equipment is constantly updated and at the moment the Nissan Patrol is able to compete on equal terms with any new products in its class.

The spacious cabin of the Patrol can comfortably accommodate seven people; the interior is decorated with practical, high-quality materials, and the seats are covered with genuine leather. Regardless of what kind of terrain the car is moving on - on a flat road or driving through deep potholes, the suspension and vibration limiting system will not allow passengers to bounce in their seats, all bumps in the road are absorbed smoothly and effectively.

In the initial configuration, the Nissan Patrol is equipped with an ALL MODE all-wheel drive system with several specialized operating modes, when selected, torque is redistributed between the wheel axles. Under the hood of the SUV is a 405-horsepower gasoline engine equipped with a variable valve timing system and other necessary devices that increase the engine's service life and reduce fuel consumption.

Drawing the line

Today on the roads of Russia you can find more than a dozen different models of jeeps. These are Chinese, Japanese, German, American, and Russian crossovers. However, before you buy one, consider the safety of your driving and choose the most reliable SUV.

Whether you're towing your boat to the lake or taking the kids to soccer practice, the right SUV can handle any task. The latest models offer everything from rear-seat entertainment systems to the latest electronic safety features. To make the right choice, think about what you will use most often and, based on this, proceed further. Traditional SUVs tend to favor attributes like towing power and good ground clearance for tackling rough roads, while more modern crossovers (car-based SUVs) are designed for a smoother ride and maximum interior space. In this review we have made a selection of both types of these vehicles, so no matter what you are looking for, you will find it here.

Subcompact class

#1 Honda HR-V

The 2017 Honda XR-V is one of the best contenders for the title of best in this class. What does she have to do with this? For those who have just switched from a passenger car, there is plenty of space in the trunk, despite the size of the car, thanks to the folding “Magic Seats”. There's also plenty of room for four tall passengers, something you won't find in this class. Our wish would be to make the technical interface simpler, but overall the HR-V is a very comfortable car for passengers, with more space than the average subcompact sedan.

#2 Mazda CX-3

The 2017 Mazda TsX-3 is one of the most attractive, enjoyable to drive and sporty cars in this class. It's smaller than other leading compacts, which means space is very limited. But, if you are considering driving pleasure, then this is the best choice. The CX-3 also has one of the best interiors in the class, with superb seats, high-quality materials and an easy-to-use infotainment system that parodies those of more expensive cars like Audi and BMW.

#3 Subaru Crosstrek (Subaru XV)

Body-on-frame SUVs are typically the only go-anywhere, off-road vehicles available, but some small crossovers like this 2017 Subaru Crosstrek buck the trend. It's essentially an Impreza Hatchback with extra ground clearance, different tires and some styling upgrades. The Crosstrek offers some level of off-road capability without the downside of compromising fuel economy. And while the Subaru Crosstrek isn't the fastest car in its class, it still has adequate power for city use and modest fuel economy.

Class Compact

#4 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is one of the smoothest, most streamlined cars in this class, and perhaps one of the overall ones on the market today. The CR-V has plenty of room, offers excellent fuel economy (especially with the optional 1.5-liter turbo engine), and it's relatively quick. Honda offers it at a very competitive price, so you'll likely find it fits within your budget. The car may not be the most exciting or sporty in its segment, but when it comes to comfort, quality and price, it is perhaps the best representative.

#5 Mazda CX-5

Since the old Mazda CX-5 was our favorite, it comes as no surprise that the new, improved, redesigned CX-5 is also our choice. With an interior and driving dynamics that mimic luxury cars, the Mazda CX-5 feels much more expensive than it actually is. Add to that the fact that it's still a very fuel-efficient, family-friendly crossover with plenty of space and modern interior technology, and you have a class-leading compact.

#6 Ford Escape

The 2017 Ford Escape is a strong performer across the board, offering a wide range of options to suit the needs of different buyers. There are turbo engines, plenty of trunk space, and a much improved technology interface with Ford's latest infotainment software. Like its closest rival, the Mazda CX-5, the Escape feels sporty to drive, more car-like than SUV-like. Whether you're looking for an entry-level car or a loaded version with all the bells and whistles, the Ford Escape is worth considering.

#7 Subaru Forester

If you're looking for something basic to carry and would like to avoid a lot of unnecessary bling, the 2017 Subaru Forester is a great choice. It has a fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engine, standard all-wheel drive and solid reliability scores. The Forester also has many great technology and safety options available, such as Lane Departure Prevention, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (side monitoring when reversing).

Midsize class 2-row

#8 2017 Ford Edge

The Ford Edge offers buyers a little bit of everything with its comfortable ride, ample interior space and optional performance-oriented engines. The base engine is attractive for its solid fuel economy, and the optional engines produce impressive power. Recent updates to the technology interface have also given the Edge all the tricks you could want in this mid-size class.

#9 Kia Sorento

The 2017 Kia Sorento is a good example of why we love midsizes so much. It has many technological features and all the space you need for family travel. The Sorento is available with two or three rows of seating, so you can seat up to 7 passengers. The Sorento's smooth, sleek design and comfortable seats add to the Sorento's appeal, and it comes standard with an excellent warranty on all trims.

#10 Nissan Murano

This unique midsize crossover is distinguished by its eye-catching exterior design, high-tech interior and class-leading front seats. It also delivers solid performance, making it feel smaller behind the wheel than it really is. Don't worry, though, there's plenty of rear bench space for adults or even the largest child seats, although the trunk isn't as spacious as the Ford Edge.

Midsize class 3-row

#11 Honda Pilot

The 2017 Honda Pilot has received many improvements since the debut of the first generation. It now offers one of the best combinations of performance, applicability and technology. The Pilot is comfortable on the road, smooth on rough city streets, and well made, inside and out. For those drivers who want to ditch the minivan but still need three rows of seating, the Pilot offers intelligent space solutions, advanced technology and impressive class-leading fuel economy. The Honda Pilot can even haul up to 2.2 tonnes when properly equipped, making it a great alternative to bulky body-on-frame SUVs.

#12 Toyota Highlander

The 2017 Toyota Highlander has been one of the best cars in this class for some time, and there are many reasons for that. Not only does it offer an optional 3.5-liter V6 that's powerful and fuel-efficient, but a hybrid model is also available, a rarity in the class. The Highlander can tow up to 2.2 tons of cargo when properly equipped, and has an above-average cargo bay. The Toyota Highlander also has pleasantly heavy handling and near-luxury levels of interior comfort.

#13 Mazda CX-9

One of the coolest looking and most modified cars in recent memory, the Mazda CX-9 has an unrivaled combination of size, style and class. It's big, but maneuverable. It's powerful yet fuel efficient. It seems expensive, but the price is still not in the luxury stratosphere. And while the 2,040 liters of boot space isn't the most you'll find in the class, the CX-9's comfortable cargo bay is nonetheless worthy of respect, and fuel economy figures (as well as real-world performance) are impressive. So to speak, this is a driver's 3-row crossover, just what we love and expect from Mazda.

Full Size Class

#14 Ford Expedition

There's been a big shift in the SUV world over the past few years, away from big, body-on-frame, cargo-based family haulers. Crossovers with soft and smooth suspension are more common today. Despite this shift, the Ford Expedition has evolved to create a strong three-row SUV with truck-like traction and serious road presence. The 2017 Ford Expedition has one of the softest and smoothest suspensions in the segment, and more than enough room for adults in the third row of seats. And while fuel economy isn't quite as impressive, the Expedition is able to squeeze decent mileage out of its turbo V6 - 13 mpg combined. Add to this a maximum towing rating of over 4 tonnes and you have an impressive family machine.

Off Road Class

#15 Toyota Land Cruiser

Sometimes you may need an SUV with a very specific skill set, just driving your family to training and back won't be enough. This is where an off-road athlete like the Toyota Land Cruiser comes into play. Full-time all-wheel drive, ground clearance that puts most pickup trucks to shame and Toyota's advanced KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System) make the Kruzak eminently capable off-road. The superb ride quality, strong V8 and simple, clean interior structure must make this SUV more attractive to more than just the off-road crowd. Of course, you can own a Land Cruiser and never go off-road. You can also own it and never drive it on the road. This is the beauty of this car with smooth body lines.

#16 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Jeep has been making off-road vehicles for what seems like forever. And, of course, the comfortable, family-friendly Grand Cherokee is unlikely to be its most off-road model, but it can go much further than most of its brethren - especially in Trailhawk trim, which debuted in 2017. More than just an SUV, the Grand Cherokee is quiet, almost luxurious inside, and extremely good on the road. There are also three powertrains to choose from here, which should help when it's hauling something or just making more noise from your driving.

#17 Jeep Wrangler

There aren't many cars left on the planet that are as focused as the 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The Wrangler has two main missions, which it has served for decades: to go as far off-road as possible, and to have a convertible roof. Everything else is secondary. This is not a comfortable, luxurious, well-finished family car. It's just an SUV that wants to go where no one else can. Overall grace obviously suffers as a result, but that's part of what gives the Wrangler its charm. He doesn't worry about rear-seat DVD players or massaging seats. He'd rather drop the roof and go for a drive through the woods, which is probably what you want if you're looking at a Wrangler. And that's why he's still our favorite.

#18 Toyota 4Runner

With off-road options and plenty of useful features, no matter where you take it, the Toyota 4Runner is a leader in its class. Huge ground clearance will get you over rocks and ruts, while the KDSS suspension system and available low-range transfer case can stomach any road surface you throw at them. The forward runner is relatively capable and as a tractor too, it can pull up to 2.2 tons. There are several 4Runner trims available for urban use, but we recommend one of the TRD models to get you off the beaten path.

Lux Compact class

#19 Acura RDX

If you're looking for a luxurious ambiance without the maudlin price premium, the Acura RDX is a great place to start. The richest trims of the RDX typically compete with other luxury crossovers in their base trim levels, without sacrificing comfort or manners. The cabin is large enough for adults to sit comfortably in the back, and the standard V6 engine combines class-leading acceleration with reasonable fuel economy. All the luxury equipment you'd expect to find in this class is available in the RDH, and it's one of the easiest cars to drive thanks to its size.

#20 BMW X3

Some SUV buyers expect their cars to feel massive behind the wheel, but the BMW X3 feels more like a sports sedan than an SUV. Add to this a spacious and well-executed interior, and you have a winning recipe. The X3 is a little more priced than some of its similarly equipped rivals, but if you want something that feels a little different no matter how you drive it, the X3 is worth the money.

#21 Audi Q5

While it may not be particularly flashy or flashy on the outside, the 2017 Audi Q5 certainly has the right equipment where it counts. The base 4-cylinder turbo engine has enough power to keep it competitive in the class, while the optional V6 offers a little more efficiency. The interior features top-end materials, with the sliding rear seat being a unique feature in the class. And the sporty driving nature means you don't have to sacrifice practicality for fun.

#22 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

One of the newest cars in the segment, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC is a solid performer across the board. The cabin has plenty of room for adults, both front and rear. The styling and finishing touches every luxury standard, and the standard 4-cylinder engine is among the best in class for acceleration and fuel economy. An available AMG model raises the bar with a turbo V6, and the available all-wheel drive on all models means you can consider the GLC suitable for any climate. The GLC doesn't skimp on options either - you can get them of every sort, from a 14-speaker Burmester audio system to 360-degree cameras.

#23 Porsche Macan

The 2017 Porsche Macan is probably one of the best-driving SUVs on the market today. Porsche took the virtues of flamboyant handling and applied them to the small crossover class. Everything about the Macan's interior feels like it's borrowed from the long, illustrious history of cars like the 911 Carrera, and you can still carry a bike if you fold down the rear seats. Thanks to its rounded design and compact dimensions, the Macan is slightly limited in overall cargo capacity, but if you're looking for a driver's car in this segment, this is it.

#24 Acura MDX

Like the smaller RDH, the 2017 Acura MDH is a luxury SUV without the heavy price tag. The Acura MDX offers three rows of seating, all of which are comfortable and spacious, but be aware that cargo space is very average. Excellent safety ratings, a quiet cabin, a smooth ride and impressive fuel economy round out the MDX's long list of practical strengths, but for a car this big, it's also very sporty.

#25 Audi Q7

Without question, the refreshed 2017 Audi Q7 is one of our top recommendations in the class. Excellent quality finishing and selection of materials make the interior attractive from the moment you step into the car, while the superbly quiet interior on the highway ensures that this will be an excellent car for long trips. The Q7 comes standard with a turbo 4-cylinder engine, but we recommend going with the supercharged V6, which propels the Q7 from zero to 60 mph in 6 seconds—an impressive figure for this class. The V6 also increases maximum towing from 2 to 3.5 tons, which is definitely strong.

#26 BMW X5

The 2017 BMW X5 is one of the most expensive cars in its class, and its trunk volume is less than that of the class leaders. However, we still think it's worth being here. Here you can choose from several different engines, including a turbo six, a turbo V8, a six-cylinder diesel, and even a plug-in hybrid with the ability to travel 22 km on electric power alone. As you'd expect from BMW, there's plenty of high-tech equipment available, such as a night vision camera system and 4-zone climate control. The X5 also comes with four years of free standard maintenance and enough standard options to satisfy almost any driver.

#27 Porsche Cayenne

Because of its impressive size, the 2017 Porsche Cayenne may seem too large to be sporty or agile. But don't let this big German SUV fool you. It's truly impressive - both on the straight and in the corners. Whether you're driving the standard turbo V6 or the powerful turbo V8, the Cayenne has more than enough spark to satisfy anyone with a heavy right foot. Whether you're heading into town, trying to escape the city, or heading out for a stroll through the hills, the Cayenne remains easy to drive. All the luxury features are in order too, with an exquisitely crafted interior and comfortable enough seating for any long journey.

#28 Volvo XC90

With style and sophistication throughout, the 2017 Volvo XC90 is unique in appearance and superb to drive. A common theme among our top recommendations in this class is that the XC90 handles like a much smaller car, and it has an available plug-in hybrid version - two features that give it a wide range of appeal. The second and third rows of seats have plenty of space, and as expected from a Volvo, it has top safety ratings, including a Superior score from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety due to its frontal collision-avoidance system. The XC90 doesn't accelerate as quickly as some rivals or have as much noise insulation as the class leaders, but it still has a lot going for it and is high on our list.

Luxury Fullsize and Flagships

#29 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

Formerly known as the GL, the 2017 Mercedes GLS is as big as you can get from Mercedes (cargo vans don't count). The GLS has plenty of space for adults in all three rows of seats, and there's no shortage of available luxury equipment. If you fold the second and third rows of seats in the GLS, you get a total of a whopping 2,650 liters of cargo space, which is competitive even in this segment. Notable options include an automatic parallel parking system, ventilated front seats, adaptive suspension, and even a dual-range transfer case for some added off-road prowess. And no Mercedes is truly complete until it has a performance-oriented AMG variant, so the GLS offers the AMG GLS 63, which comes with a 5.5-liter V8 and 577 horsepower.

#30 Land Rover Range Rover

One of the most iconic luxury SUVs on the market, the 2017 Land Rover Range Rover combines extreme off-road capability with a rich interior. Even if it lived its entire life in the city, the Range Rover would be impressive based solely on its smooth 8-speed transmission, quiet cabin and impeccable finishing. But no Range Rover should be relegated solely to city driving. This top-of-the-line SUV can also tackle challenging trails, thanks to its intelligent road feedback system and plenty of ground clearance to tackle big rocks.
