Removing common rail injectors. Basic steps for cleaning and replacing injectors How to remove fuel injectors from

There are tens of thousands of automobile gas stations in Russia, but not all of them can boast of the availability of high-quality gasoline that meets all modern norms and standards. Often, fuel contains not only dirt particles, but also various impurities (phenols, sulfur compounds, acids, lead, etc.). In addition, low-quality gasoline is often characterized by a low octane number. All these factors have an extremely negative impact on the operation of the engine as a whole, and on the stability of the functioning of its individual components in particular, significantly reducing the service life of all engine components. That is why every car enthusiast should have an idea of how to remove and clean the injectors on a VAZ 2110. You should not immediately begin this work.

Cleaning injectors should be resorted to only as a last resort, when there is no doubt about the unstable operation of the vehicle engine.

Symptoms indicating the need to clean injectors on a VAZ 2110:

  1. There are problems starting the engine.
  2. The fuel mixture consumption rate increases.
  3. Engine thrust power decreases.
  4. When driving in the winter season, the car periodically moves jerkily.
  5. One of the engine cylinders fails (triple effect), etc.

The injectors must be cleaned if one or more of the symptoms described above appear.

Options for solving the problem

Today, every vehicle owner can choose one of three possible options for cleaning injectors:

  • use automotive chemicals;
  • resort to the services of a service station;
  • Remove and clean the injectors on the VAZ 2110 yourself.

In our article we will dwell in detail on the third option for resolving the issue. Self-cleaning is safer and more effective compared to the effect that occurs after using automotive chemicals. The economic benefits of cleaning injectors yourself are also an obvious fact, given the prices prevailing at service stations. It is recommended to carry out this procedure yourself only if you have at least a general understanding of the internal structure of the machine. Otherwise, it is advisable to entrust cleaning of injectors to specialists.

  • Before starting work, you need to make sure that the vehicle engine has cooled down.
  • Then you need to disconnect the power wires from the fuel pump to completely de-energize it.
  • The next step is to reduce the pressure in the engine power system as much as possible. To do this, you need to start the engine, then wait until it stalls at idle. This action must be repeated several times until the engine stops responding to attempts to start it.

  • Now you can begin dismantling the fuel rail. To do this, you must first de-energize it, disconnect the fuel supply hoses from it and disconnect all electrical devices from it (idle speed and pressure regulators, position sensor of the device that regulates the air supply to the engine (throttle valve)). After this, using a hexagon, you need to unscrew the two mounting bolts and carefully remove the fuel frame along with the injectors. When removing the frame, you need to ensure that there are no distortions, which can significantly complicate the dismantling procedure.
  • Next you need to start removing the injectors. To do this, you need to disconnect the mounting brackets that secure the electrical connector (connector) and the mounting bracket that holds the injector in place. In order to avoid dirt getting on the parts, it is best to carefully place the removed injectors on a dry rag and cover their seats with something.

  • It is recommended to remove the rubber sealing rings before the procedure and install new ones after cleaning. It is best to start cleaning each nozzle by clearing its nozzle of various deposits. Attention should also be paid to the funnel-shaped surface, on which coke-like resinous deposits can accumulate.
  • After this, you can proceed to cleaning the fuel mixture supply channel. To open the fuel supply solenoid valve, a power source is required, preferably not exceeding 5-7V. To do this, you can use an adjustable, stabilized voltage source or a mobile phone charger. A car battery is also suitable, but in this case, voltage must be supplied to the injector through an incandescent lamp, which acts as a current damper to eliminate the possibility that the injector winding will be burned.
  • The supply of electricity is carried out through two wires, in the gap of one of which it is necessary to install a button that closes and opens the network, turning it on and off, we will simulate the operation of an injector in an engine under the influence of pulsed electricity.

  • As equipment for supplying cleaning liquid to the nozzle channel, you can use a can containing liquid intended for cleaning the carburetor.
  • To tightly connect the canister nozzle with the nozzle, you can use a rubber tube, which must be securely fixed using a plastic clamp or any other available fastener on the canister nozzle and on the nozzle.
  • When everything is ready, you can start applying electricity to open the nozzle, while simultaneously pressing the canister to supply the washing liquid. After some time, the jet of cleaner coming out through the fuel sprayer should become uniform and clearly visible, which indicates successful removal of carbon deposits. At this point, the cleaning procedure is considered completed.

Expected effect

If the injector cleaning procedure was carried out correctly, then fuel consumption will decrease, engine power will increase, smooth idling will appear, and starting a cold engine will occur without any difficulties.

Helpful information

Practice shows that if they are replaced with injectors from other manufacturers (even well-established brands), the volume of fuel mixture consumed can increase significantly.

Video

The procedure for cleaning injectors is presented in the video:

Checking and replacing injectors

Signs of injector failure:

Difficulty starting the engine;

Unstable engine operation;

The engine stalls at idle;

Increased crankshaft rotation speed at idle speed;

The engine does not develop full power;

Jerks and dips in engine operation when the vehicle is moving;

Increased fuel consumption;

Increased content of CO and CH in exhaust gases;

Glow ignition due to leaking injectors.

You will need: a 5mm hexagon, a screwdriver, a 17mm wrench.

1. Remove the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Remove the receiver from the inlet pipe (see. “Replacing the gaskets of the intake pipe and exhaust manifold” ).

3. Drain the coolant from the engine cooling system (see. "Replacing Coolant" ).

4. Reduce the pressure in the fuel system (see. “Reduced pressure in the power system”).

5. Disconnect the injector wiring harness connector.

6. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator.

7. Remove the two screws securing the fuel pressure regulator to the fuel rail...

8. ...and take him aside.

NOTE

If the fuel pressure regulator O-ring remains in the rail, remove it. Replace any sealing ring that has lost elasticity or is torn.

9. Unscrew the fuel supply pipe nut...

10. ...and disconnect the tube from the fuel rail. Replace loose or torn tube tip O-ring.

11. Remove the two fuel rail mounting bolts...

12. ...remove the bolts along with washers...

13. ...and remove the fuel rail along with the injector wiring harness and injectors.

WARNING

If any injector remains in the engine intake pipe when removing the fuel rail, replace its O-rings and retainer.

14. To check the injectors, connect the fuel pipe to the rail and install the fuel pressure regulator. Connect the injector wiring harness block.

15. Lower the nozzles into transparent containers. The latter are more convenient to hang on the fuel rail. Check the fuel atomization of the injectors. To do this, turn on the starter. The injectors must spray fuel in the correct cone. Each nozzle must have four jets...

16. ...the amount of fuel supplied through the injectors should be the same in all four containers (check using a measuring container). If any injector does not meet these conditions, replace it.

17. Immediately after turning off the ignition, carefully inspect the injectors. If fuel leakage is noticeable from the nozzle of any injector, it means that the injector is leaking and must be replaced.

18. If the injector does not spray fuel, check that it is receiving power. To do this, disconnect the block with wires from it, connect the battery directly to the injector contacts and turn on the ignition. If in this case the injector sprays fuel, then there is a malfunction in the injector electrical circuit.

19. It is recommended to check the resistance of the injector windings. To do this, disconnect the block with wires from the injector (after first disconnecting the wire from the negative terminal of the battery) and connect an ohmmeter to the injector contacts.

It should show a resistance of 11-15 ohms. Otherwise, replace the injector.

20. Before replacing injectors, reduce the pressure in the supply system (see. “Reduced pressure in the power system” in the subsection “Power system” ).

21. Press the spring clip and disconnect the wiring harness connector from the injector being replaced.

22. Slide the injector lock to the side...

23. ...and remove the injector from the fuel rail. Replace the remaining faulty injectors in the same way.

NOTE

Check the O-rings on the ramp side of all injectors...

...and the intake pipe. Replace rings that are cracked or have lost elasticity.

HELPFUL ADVICE

We recommend replacing the injector O-rings every time you remove the fuel rail, since in many cases, engine malfunction is caused by leaking injector seals.

24. Install the injectors and fuel rail in the reverse order of removal. Before installation, lubricate the injector O-rings with gasoline.

25. To replace the clamps that do not hold the injectors well, slide them onto the recess for the ramp mounting bolt or onto the edge of the ramp.

The cost of cleaning injectors at car services is approximately 1,500 rubles, but you can clean them yourself.

To clean the injectors yourself you will need:

Carburetor cleaner (about 2 cans);

Brake hose;

Insulating tape;

Plastic clamps for electrical wiring;

A piece of 2-core wire;

12 Volt light bulb;

Knife (stationery or other)

The cost of everything above is approximately 300-400 rubles.

Injector cleaning process

Removing the fuel rail to clean the injectors:

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Remove the ramp with the fuel pressure regulator.
3. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the regulator.
4. Using two 17mm wrenches, unscrew the fuel pipe fittings, releasing the fuel pressure.

5. Disconnect the electrical connector of the ramp.

6. Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the screw of the bracket securing the fuel pipes... and remove it.

7. Use a 5mm hexagon to unscrew the two ramp mounting screws.

8. By pulling the ramp along the axis of the injectors, remove all four injectors from their seats and remove the ramp towards the left side of the car.

Removing the injectors

1. Squeezing the spring clip, disconnect the electrical connector of the injector.

2. Use a screwdriver to move the injector lock along the ramp... and remove it.

3. While rocking the nozzle, remove it from the ramp.

4. Using a screwdriver with a thin tip, remove the sealing rings... from the nozzle and the nozzle body.

Making a homemade device for cleaning injectors

1) Cut off the metal pressed nut from the rubber brake hose on one side.
2) We put the cut end of the hose onto the nozzle and secure it with a plastic clamp using a tightening strap.
3) At the other end of the hose, insert the tube included in the carburetor cleaner kit (if the kit does not include one, use a tube from WD-40 fluid). The remaining space between the tube and the brake hose can be filled with fum tape, unilock, or the remains of soundproofing material can be used. Then wrap it tightly with electrical tape.

Rice. 1, 2,3. Homemade device for cleaning injectors.

4) Cleaning of injectors occurs when a voltage of 12 V is applied to the injector, and in order not to burn the injector winding, we power a 12 V light bulb in series on the positive wire, in the ground wire we make a break by inserting a switch or alligator clips, or using a working button, only then when you press it. The entire circuit is connected to the battery.

Scheme for switching on the nozzle for cleaning.

1) Create pressure in the brake hose by pressing the spray canister several times.
2) Press the button and apply voltage to the nozzle, the nozzle begins to spray.
3) Don’t forget to press and hold the cleaner nozzle to maintain pressure in the hose.
4) We clean the nozzle until the spray from the nozzle is uniform.

After cleaning the injectors, we assemble them back onto the fuel rail, using new O-rings on all injectors on the rail side.

Install new o-rings very carefully, without using any tools, after lubricating them with engine oil or WD-40 fluid.

Install the injectors in the reverse order of removal, securing them to the ramp with clamps, after tightening them a little.
Reinstall the fuel rail, connect the fuel line, secure the ground terminal to the battery, turn the ignition key in the lock 3-4 times at intervals of 2-3 seconds to create pressure in the fuel rail, and check the tightness of the connection of the pipeline and injectors.

P.S. You should also change the fuel filter after cleaning the injectors, and preferably the fuel pump mesh, and you should only refuel at proven gas stations, and preferably 95 gasoline.

Removing and installing a pump injector

Sequence of removal and installation of pump injectors in a diesel engine.

1-Radiator frame with attached parts, 2-Bolt (4 pcs. Tightening torque 8Nm), 3-Bolt (2 pcs. Tightening torque 20Nm), 4-Bolt (8 pcs. Tightening torque 20Nm),

Remove and set aside the coolant expansion tank
-Remove the filler pipe of the windshield washer and headlight cleaner reservoir
-Unscrew screws 4
-Screw the guide rods into the right and left side members (2 pieces each)

-Unscrew screws 2 and 3 (left and right)
-Disconnect the intercooler pressure hoses
-Using the guide rods tool, move the radiator frame forward approximately 15 cm in the direction of the arrow.

-Tighten the hoses and wires next.

If there are no guide rods, the radiator frame can be carefully placed on the pads by adjusting their height. The photo shows the approximate position of the radiator frame installed on the pads.

Removing the injector:
-Remove the input manifold
-Remove the casing and the cylinder head cover
-Turn the crankshaft using a wrench so that the pair of cams, respectively, to be installed or removed, point evenly upward. If you do not have a wrench to turn the crankshaft, you can do it differently. Jack up the front wheel of the car. Engage the highest gear. Slowly rotate the wheel with your hands until the cams are in the desired position.

-Loosen the locknuts of the adjusting bolts -1- and unscrew the bolts until the corresponding rocker arm rests on the pump injector pusher spring

-Unscrew the mounting bolts -2- of the rocker arm axle from the outer part inwards and remove the rocker arm axle
-Unscrew the mounting bolt -3- of the pad and remove the pad
-Lift the pump injector connector with a screwdriver. To avoid distortion, support the connector on the reverse side with light finger pressure.
-Insert the puller instead of the clamping block into the side cutout of the pump injector

If you don’t have a puller, you can make one yourself. For example, as shown in the photo.

-Using careful tapping movements, remove the unit injector upwards from its seat in the cylinder head.

Installation of pump injector

1-20 Nm + tighten by 1/4 turn (90°), 2- lock nut, 3- adjusting bolt (replace at each disassembly), 4- rocker arm axle with rocker arm, 5- block, 6- 12 Nm + tighten by 3 /4 turns (270°), 7- pump nozzle, 8- sealing rings, 9- thermal insulation, 10- retaining ring.

When installing a new pump injector on an engine, it is imperative to replace the corresponding adjusting bolt in the rocker arm. New injectors come complete with O-rings and heat seal installed. If an old injector pump is installed, it must be replaced with new O-rings and a thermal insulator. Make sure that the rings are not twisted.

— Lubricate the rings with oil and very carefully install the injectors into place in the engine cylinder head

— Insert the pump injector into the seat by pressing evenly until it stops

— Insert the clamping block into the side cutout of the pump injector

Attention!

If the unit injector is not at right angles to the retainer, the mounting screw may become loose over time, causing permanent damage to the unit injector and seat.

— Screw the new mounting bolt into the block so that you can slightly turn the pump injector

— Install the template as shown between the bearing seat and the unit injector

— Rotate the unit injector body by hand relative to the template

Helpful advice!

If you do not have a template, then before removing the nozzle, measure the gap between the nozzle and the bearing seat (by selecting a plate of a certain thickness). In the figure, the arrow indicates the location of the gap measurement.

— Correct, if necessary, the position of the injector and tighten the fastening bolts. Tightening torque 12 Nm followed by additional turning by 270° (3/4 turn)

— Reinstall the rocker shaft and carefully tighten the new bolts

— Tighten the inner bolts first, then both outer bolts. After this, tighten in the same sequence with a torque of 20 Nm + additional turning by 90° (1/4 turn)

— Install an indicator on the nozzle adjusting screw as shown in the figure

— Rotate the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation so that the rocker arm roller stops at the top of the drive cam. The roller side (arrow A in the figure) is at the highest point, the indicator (arrow B in the figure) is at the lowest point

— After this you need to remove the indicator

— Then unscrew the adjusting screw from the stop back 180°

— Holding the screw in this position, tighten the locknut to a torque of 30 Nm

— Insert the pump-injector connector into place and secure the engine cylinder head cover.

Common Rail engine injectors sometimes need to be cleaned, repaired or replaced. To do this, they need to be removed from the engine. I’ll tell you how I did it in this article.

Before we begin. Important.

Some injectors have correction codes for the amount of fuel injected. Therefore, before removing it, it is advisable to find out whether your injectors have them. If they have or do not have the opportunity to obtain such information, then it is better to remember which injector was located where, this will not make it worse, and if there are no such codes, then the installation locations are not important, as in my case.

Looking under the hood, we will most likely see a plastic dust-heat protection cover.

It is held on by four screws. We unscrew them and remove the casing. Now we see the engine itself.

First, open the relay and fuse box under the hood and pull out the fuel pump relay. This is to prevent diesel fuel from flooding the engine and floor if you suddenly need to turn on the ignition.

Then disconnect the electrical connectors of the injectors.

Let's pull out the locking clips that secure the return hose connections.
