All about the weak points of the Mitsubishi ASX (photos and videos). New comment Weaknesses of Mitsubishi ASX

All the "sores" of a used Mitsubishi ASX

“Do you have the same one, but with mother-of-pearl buttons?” The well-known phrase suits our material today: in the mid-2000s, many clients of Mitsubishi dealerships, looking at the Outlander, dreamed of the same thing, but a little more modest in size and cheaper. Get it - Mitsubishi ASX.

When choosing between two cars of similar price, men always preferred the one that was more powerful and larger. But women... As it turned out, many of them, on the contrary, want to drive compact models, and the number of “horses” in this case fades into the background. The first to prove this was the Nissan Quashqai, which became in short supply immediately after its debut. It is not surprising that such success prompted other automakers to rush after the cheeky ladies' favorite. But developing a new platform and bringing it to perfection is long and expensive. Mitsubishi took a different path: they shortened the existing Outlander XL, tweaked the design a little and rolled out a model called ASX. It turned out fast and cheap.

For every taste

In the basic version, the car was equipped with a 1.6-liter engine and manual transmission. In order to save money, the drive is, of course, only front-wheel drive. Such simple ASXs were in good demand among those who, in principle, considered compact passenger cars as a candidate. Girls, in our country who traditionally do not like to move the gearbox lever, increasingly opted for the 1.8-liter modification with a CVT. Finally, many still single potential buyers of mid-size crossovers were not averse to saving one and a half to two hundred thousand rubles and getting behind the wheel of a “dried Outlander” with a 2.0 liter engine, a CVT and all-wheel drive. This is how the new product skillfully gained an audience among a wide variety of categories of people.

However, it soon became clear that length and design were not the only differences between the ASX and the Outlander. The “younger brother” lost to the “elder” in almost all disciplines: in dynamics, controllability, adequacy of the brake pedal... Perhaps the only thing in which it turned out to be better was smoothness. Unlike the tough "Out", the ASX is much more careful with passengers. True, as long as there are few of them in the cabin. When fully loaded, even small bumps are fraught with breakdowns of the rear suspension. However, most of its owners drive alone, so they are not aware of this.

In terms of cross-country ability, the ASX is far from ideal. Of course, short overhangs and a ground clearance of 195 mm help it gallop cheerfully along gullies, but as soon as you stop or seriously lose speed, the crossover quickly turns into “real estate.” And it’s not so easy to pull it out of captivity: the eye hanging under the front bumper, as a rule, ends up in the dirt itself. Long attempts to cope with off-road conditions on your own will most likely lead to overheating of the clutch. Nothing bad will happen - the car itself will “ask for mercy” by turning on the corresponding indicator. By the way, the variator can also overheat - including when driving too actively in manual mode, even on asphalt.

Correct unit

ASX borrowed not only the platform from Outlander (strictly speaking, not even from Outlander, but from LancerX) - the engine base and suspension are almost the same. This explains the complete absence of “childhood diseases” inherent in any new model. All three engines are by no means new - they are borrowed from other Mitsubishi models. There are no problems with them, you don’t even need to worry about replacing the timing belt - all motors have a chain drive.

Gearboxes can also hardly be called problematic: mechanical ones sometimes have oil seals leaking, and at high mileage the bearings begin to hum, but this is not widespread. The variator does not require intervention even on the first copies of the model, provided that the owner of the car was careful. If you see a message about the variator overheating too often, it means that you are “lucky” to buy a car that has already been thoroughly “tormented”.

The picture with used Mitsubishi ASX is typical for any new crossover: if the previous owner operated the car carefully, most likely there will be no major problems. For those vehicles that have actively traveled off-road, the front and rear suspensions may require repairs earlier than usual; moreover, the variator often overheats and asks for a “temporary rest” when driving quickly in manual mode. In five years of working with a compact SUV, I don’t remember a case that could be attributed to the typical “sores” of the car. The Outlander's proven chassis and components give the ASX exemplary reliability.

Owner's opinion

Dmitry Popov, Mitsubishi ASX (1.6 l) 2010

It was not easy for me to choose a car. I immediately dismissed the “Koreans”, the Nissan Qashqai, as they say, “didn’t catch on”... I liked the Mitsubishi Outlander XL, but it seemed too big. I just read about the release of ASX and immediately ordered a car. I'm sure I made the right decision. ASX has never let me down: in three years of ownership, I only went to a service station for maintenance. And this is a big plus - the nearest dealer is 300 km from me. Of course, the ASX also has its disadvantages: weak paintwork, insufficient sound insulation. But these, unfortunately, are the general trends of the modern automobile industry. From extensive experience communicating with ASX owners, I also know about complaints about the suspension, ESD settings, and warranty replacement of shock absorbers at mileages of 40–50 thousand km. I picked up a lot of useful information on the forum of Mitsubishi ASX owners, where there are many solutions for independently improving the car at minimal cost.

The advantages and disadvantages of the Mitsubishi ACX 2018-2019 in the new body were identified based on reviews from real owners. More detailed pros and cons of the Mitsubishi ASX with manual transmission, CVT, front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive AWD can be found in the stories below.

Owner reviews

Well, what can I say based on first consumer impressions. It's comfortable behind the wheel. The steering wheel is small, turns easily, softly, and is height adjustable. I immediately pulled out the first minus - visibility. The side windows are large and good. Burdocks (mirrors) are large and good. The interior rear mirror and rear window are small and inconvenient. You can get used to it, but there is still inconvenience.

The front too - thick A-pillars hide a lot of visibility. You constantly have to look out from behind them. Yes, there is a downside - safety, but a good overview is also safety. It was upsetting.

The plastic in the cabin was surprisingly not as hard as expected. Yes, before the cars of the early 2000s and 90s, this plastic was like from Paris to Siberia, but in comparison with its analogues - even less so. Everything is relative. The seats are ordinary. Not the most comfortable, but not a Zhiguli either. The first landing was very pleasing - high, it was very comfortable to sit down. Only then did the association become stronger - the stool. It’s comfortable to sit down, sit (drive) well... not quite.

The engine is quite powerful, torquey and reliable. Not to say that it’s quiet, but again, depending on what you’re comparing it to. If you drive 150 km/h, the car doesn’t feel the load, you can give it more. The stock is serious. As far as servicing is concerned, everything is elementary: you can do it yourself, you can do it at any car service center.

Body. Very good paintwork. Over the 5 years of use there were pebbles and large midges. The maximum damage is barely noticeable scratches. In the spring of 2017, some kind of infection in the supermarket parking lot tyrannized my door handle with its door and disappeared. Nothing criminal either, but the teal remains.

The trunk corresponds to the class of cars. Not big, but not small either. The rear seats fold into an almost flat floor, and four wheels on 16-inch rims can be accommodated inside without any problems.

Review of Mitsubishi ASX 1.8 CVT with front-wheel drive

Video review

The car is good to drive, the brakes are flawless. The interior is quite spacious and the trunk is small. The audio system sounds good.

Not a bad car for the money, no breakdowns in 65,000 thousand mileage, I’m especially happy with starting the engine at 30 degrees below zero (almost always the first time). Low gasoline consumption and a large gas tank allow you to stop at a gas station only once during the entire day of driving.

But the sound insulation leaves much to be desired. I would also like a clearer gear shift. In addition, on a dirty road the rear end quickly gets splashed.

Review of Mitsubishi ACX 1.8 with manual transmission and front-wheel drive, 2013.

Where can I buy?

After almost 2 years of ownership, I have not regretted the purchase, but at some points I was disappointed. Many reviews wrote that the cabin has poor sound insulation, but in my configuration this turned out to be not true, the cabin is very quiet and cozy! It becomes noisy only when at a speed of about 100 km/h it is necessary to sharply and you have to press the pedal to the floor.

The variator is a little dull, but a beginner is unlikely to feel it. For example, if you press the gas pedal to the middle and release it very sharply, then the car will not even think about reacting to this gesture. It won’t even move, so you have to work ahead of the curve.

Next about handling. The steering wheel is comfortable and controls various functions. Electric drive is a miracle! The steering wheel spins as if there is no load on it at all. The steering wheel itself is responsive and informative.

Review of Mitsubishi ACX 2.0 (150 hp) 4WD CVT 2012

I bought it at one time for 830,000 rubles (Japanese assembly). The car was worth the money in those years. The design is classy, and the capacity is good. A small truck that I used to transport everything that would fit. I bought it, sat down and drove off.

Consumption is small, the smallest is 5.3 liters per 100 km. The dynamics are on par, but the consumption is higher. Handling is perfect. You can service it yourself - there is plenty of free space under the hood.

I’m not going to change the car yet, especially since the new ASX after 2012 is assembled in the USA.

Vladimir, review of Mitsubishi ACX 1.6 (117 hp) 2WD manual 2012.

The engine, of course, is being run-in, but even within 2-3 thousand rpm you can feel its high-torque power. Perhaps the real acceleration to hundreds is really within 11.4 seconds, but it feels like the car is moving more dynamically.

Compared to the previous car, the gear shift lever moves much easier here, which, on the one hand, is great, but on the other, requires adaptation. For example, I didn’t get used to engaging third gear the first time, I confused it with fifth. The rear one, on the contrary, turns on easier and more clearly.

The steering wheel works like a clock. They wrote about excessive ease in the settings, which creates problems when driving at high speed, but I haven’t felt this yet.

Review of Mitsubishi ASX with mechanics and front-wheel drive

The most effective way to find out the whole truth about a topic of interest is to ask users. Therefore, in this article we will look at what Mitsubishi ASX owners say, reviews that will help to create a complete picture about the car. This will help identify the most common deficiencies, if any.

Active Sport X-over - it is from these words that the abbreviation ASX is formed, meaning “SUV for active driving”.

The Mitsubishi ASX was unveiled to the world public in February 2010. Initially, this happened in the car’s homeland of Japan. In March of the same year, the Geneva Motor Show introduced a version for Europe, and April revealed what the North American version would be like. The car inherited from the Mitsubishi Outlander not only a shortened base, but also exterior elements!

Exterior Mitsubishi ACX

The engineers got it right when they gave the ACX the same front end as the Outlander. This stylish and aggressive design has already gained fans all over the world, so the new model could be perceived more loyally thanks to its twin. This was a good decision for Mitsubishi ACX - reviews from owners confirm this.

The profile of the rear of the car has a sharp downward slope, which contrasts slightly with the front. However, the profile lines and menacingly “frowning” taillights compensate for this. But here opinions are divided. Some people pay attention to the contrast, others consider the profile of the car to be quite natural. Overall, the result is a beautiful and stylish crossover that stands out among its competitors with its design!

Over time, Mitsubishi ACX has undergone minor restyling in appearance, this has caused only positive reviews about the Mitsubishi ACX 2013. The changes affected the radiator grille, which became more coarse and framed along the contour with chrome. The headlights have also undergone changes, as they are framed in a contour. The front bumper was also paid attention to, modifying the air intakes and niches for fog lights.

The paintwork on the body is weak. According to some owners, rust appears on chips due to stones. Scratches appear quickly and easily. Very thin body lining, which is a common problem in modern cars. One plus is that with such a thickness of metal, paintless removal of dents is possible.

ACX crossover interior

If the appearance of the car caused a more consistent opinion, then due to the interior trim of the Mitsubishi ASX, reviews from owners were divided. This mainly concerns the quality of the plastic used in the interior. Pleasant to look at, but harsh to the touch - plastic is easily scratched. It doesn’t creak, and what’s important, it doesn’t smell like phenol.

The seats in the Mitsubishi ACX are multifunctional and have a comfortable seating position for passengers. An excellent ergonomic solution for long trips. However, the picture is spoiled by the non-adjustable tilt of the rear seats. The almost vertical position of the sofa back is designed for very patient passengers. The seat trim material is expensive. It was noticed that after a run of 10 thousand km. There may be longitudinal play in the seats.

Noise insulation is at a very low level in the Mitsubishi ASX - reviews of those who operated the car unanimously agree on this. How the designers made such an omission is unknown. This shortcoming can be solved by the independent efforts of car owners at their own expense, by installing an additional “anti-noise” system.

The Mitubishi ASX review left almost all drivers happy. There is one drawback that cannot be considered a disadvantage of a car, since it is due to the quality of our roads. Due to the high “muzzle” of the hood, it becomes necessary to keep a greater distance from the car in front. Otherwise, there is a possibility that you will not have time to react to potholes that appear on the road.

A rear view camera assists you when driving backwards. However, in versions with mechanics, even in the maximum configuration, it is missing. And again, the owners themselves solve this shortcoming by installing parking sensors at their own expense. Otherwise, there is a risk of running into some obstacle less than a meter high if it is not visible in the side mirrors. Few people like these improvements, which is why there are also negative reviews about the ASX Mitsubishi 2013.

Mitsubishi ACX suspension

The suspension of this Japanese crossover is not soft. Absolutely all drivers who get behind the wheel of an ACX immediately notice this. It is characterized by rigidity, but not excessive. The car absorbs road unevenness well, such as crossing rails or driving on paving stones.

In 2011, the suspension was modified. This modification had a positive effect on the Mitsubishi ASX - reviews from owners of 2013 and earlier years confirm this. Ground clearance of 20 cm allows the car to adequately pass camping and off-road country tests.

Mitsubishi ASX equipment

Japanese ACX crossovers are equipped with a range of power units that are combined with a CVT or a 5-speed manual transmission. The 1.6 liter engine is installed only in conjunction with a manual transmission. There are some complaints about the transmission. There are several known cases of replacement of a release bearing under warranty due to a whistling noise.

Read about popular Chinese jeeps. You can also take an interest in interesting facts about Dodge Caliber.

There have been complaints about a car with a 1.6L Mitsubishi ASX 2013 - reviews from owners concern the clutch, which is considered weak. Under load, they claim, the smell of a burnt clutch may appear. At 3000 rpm detonation occurs, and this phenomenon is quite common.

The range of engines installed on the ASX:

  • Gasoline engine, volume 1.6 l, power 117 hp. Acceleration to hundreds is 11.4 seconds. Actual fuel consumption, according to the owners, is 5.3 liters when driving on the highway, 6.8 liters when driving in city mode.
  • Gasoline engine, volume 1.8 l, power 140 hp. Although the engine is superior in power to the 1.6-liter engine, the acceleration dynamics have clearly suffered: 13.1 s to 100 km/h. Real consumption for the highway is 6.4 liters, in the city - 9.8 liters.
  • Gasoline engine, volume 2.0 l, power 150 hp. The most powerful engine in the ACX line, acceleration to hundreds is 11.9 s, while consuming 8.1 liters - highway and 10.5 liters in city mode.

There is a 1.8 liter diesel unit with a power of 150 hp. Cars with this engine, due to their high fuel requirements, are not imported into the country.

Owners of a Mitsubishi ACX with a 1.6 engine sometimes notice that the engine can start the second, and sometimes even the third time. This encourages owners of the Mitsubishi ACX 1.6 to leave reviews that are not always flattering. But this is a very rare phenomenon, and should not be attributed to systematic shortcomings.

As can be seen from the review, there are varied reviews. It would be surprising if everyone only praised the car. But in general, it can be argued that the car is a worthy representative in its segment. It is perfect for city trips, giving its owner status and image. On country roads, the Mitsubishi ACX has also proven itself to be an excellent and reliable means of transportation!

Review of Mitsubishi ASX left by: Dmitry from the city of Brest region.

Good afternoon. Today's article discusses typical weaknesses of the Mitsubishi ASX and problems during operation. Traditionally for our site, the article is supplemented with excellent photo and video materials.

Competition among compact crossovers is fierce right now. Almost every automobile manufacturer considers it their duty to offer customers a compact conqueror of light off-road conditions. Mitsubishi was no exception, introducing the Mitsubishi ASX crossover to the European market in 2010. And among its competitors, the Japanese SUV did not get lost. A year later, the ASX began to appear on the streets of our cities with enviable regularity, and now the compact crossover is quite often found on the used car market. And there he is not deprived of attention from potential buyers either. But will operating a used Mitsubishi ASX be joyful and serene?

The body is the weak point of the Mitsubishi ASX.

The paintwork of almost all modern cars is a favorite object of criticism from car enthusiasts. The Japanese crossover was no exception. After just a couple of years of operation, a fairly large number of small chips and scratches appear on the body of the Mitsubishi ASX. The Japanese crossover was not spared by another problem of modern cars - the appearance of condensation in the taillights and foglights. But if you can still put up with this, then it’s much more difficult to come to terms with the bursting glass of fog lights. Keeping them safe and sound, however, is not so difficult. To do this, you must try not to expose the delicate glass of your fog lights to sudden temperature changes. So it’s better not to get carried away with forcing deep puddles at full speed on the Mitsubishi ASX.

The salon is cheap and cheerful.

The interior plastics in the ASX aren't particularly expensive, so it's not surprising that they start to squeak a little over time. Most crossover owners get used to the squeak and simply stop paying attention to it. But you won’t be able to get used to the drops from the ceiling lamp. The problem will have to be solved. You can get rid of condensation that forms between the roof and its upholstery by gluing the inner surface of the roof with special heat-insulating materials. It won't cost much, but you'll have to tinker.

Engine range – which is better to choose?

For the Mitsubishi ASX sold on our market, three gasoline engines were offered, each of which has a timing chain drive. At the moment, the owners of the Japanese crossover have the least complaints about the most powerful two-liter engine with 150 horsepower. With timely maintenance, it will not remind you of itself at all.

But the weakest engine, which with a volume of 1.6 liters develops 117 horsepower, can cause minor problems from time to time. Some owners of Mitsubishi ASX with this power unit have already complained that they are not always able to start the car the first time. But since over the years of crossover production the problem has not become systemic, the Japanese are not yet thinking about solving it. But dealers and Mitsubishi itself tried to fight detonation, which sometimes occurs at medium speeds on cars with a 1.6-liter engine. They released new engine ECU firmware, which partially solved the problem. Although some owners still note that sometimes detonation appears again.

There are fewer complaints about the 140-horsepower 1.8-liter gasoline engine. Only on restyled versions of the crossover, and they began to be produced in 2012, this power unit sometimes frightened the owners of the Japanese crossover with the appearance of extraneous rattling sounds. And if at first official dealers blamed the resonating crankcase protection for everything, then it turned out that the source of extraneous sounds was the vibrating drive belt tensioner.

Transmission problems.

A very reliable manual gearbox on the Mitsubishi ASX is relatively rare. Most of the cars that have already proven themselves well are the older Outlander model. There are only isolated cases of premature failure of the variator. And in this case, we can say with confidence that the blame for this lies entirely with the owners of the ill-fated cars.

The suspension is another weak point.

So if the Mitsubishi ASX has a weak point, it is definitely its suspension. Not only was it not configured in the best way on pre-restyling crossovers (on cars that were released after 2012, the settings were changed for the better), but also from a reliability point of view, it is far from ideal. The stabilizer bushings on the Mitsubishi ASX can withstand only 35-40 thousand kilometers; after another 10-15 thousand kilometers, the crossover can be distressed by leaking front shock absorbers. The remaining “consumables” can withstand more. And their cost is quite acceptable, so the “Japanese” suspension will not require any special expenses.

Conclusion.

Of course, Mitsubishi ASX owners are not immune from minor troubles, but the Japanese crossover will not cause big troubles. In terms of reliability, it looks much preferable to most of its competitors. It’s not for nothing that even used Mitsubishi ASX find their new owners quite quickly.

That’s all for me today, if you want to add to the article about the weak points of the Mitsubishi ASX, write comments.
