There are fewer complaints about the 140-horsepower 1.8-liter gasoline engine. And if at first official dealers blamed the resonating crankcase protection for everything, then it turned out that the source of extraneous sounds was the vibrating drive belt tensioner.

Transmission problems.


A very reliable manual gearbox on the Mitsubishi ASX is relatively rare. Most of the cars that have already proven themselves well are the older Outlander model. Engines

Mitsubishi ACX has three gasoline engines in its arsenal: 1.6 liters with a capacity of 117 hp, 1.8 liters with 140 hp. and 2.0 l – 150 hp. All power units have a timing chain drive. European versions can also be equipped with a 1.8 liter diesel engine – 150 hp.

Owners of a Mitsubishi ASX with a 1.6 liter base engine occasionally report problems with starting: the engine starts the second or third time. Since the problem is not systemic, it has not yet been possible to identify the cause.

But detonation, which occurs at speeds close to 3000 rpm, is a more common phenomenon for the 1.6 liter engine. This “phenomenon” is presumably associated with a high compression ratio of 11.0: 1 and a lean mixture in certain modes. It is well known that detonation has a detrimental effect on the “health” of the engine. But specimens that have driven more than 50-100 thousand km demonstrate the absence of any unpleasant consequences. Some owners have noted a connection between the appearance of detonation and a change in refueling location. Some authorized service centers offer new firmware for the engine ECU, but even after the update, detonation does not always disappear. According to the “officials”, the factory firmware for the ASX 2012 model year was changed to eliminate the occurrence of detonation. But some owners still celebrate its appearance.

In severe frosts, below 30 degrees, on crossovers with a 1.6 liter engine, there were cases of oil squeezing out through the dipstick and oil seals due to freezing of the crankcase ventilation pipe. At the end of 2011, a Mitsubishi technical bulletin was issued, ordering the replacement of the old-style pipe with a modified one - with a larger internal diameter. The new pipe began to be installed on the conveyor in 2012.


Specific features appeared on the restyled version of the Mitsubishi ACX with a 1.8 liter engine. The motor received a different design for routing the drive belt for auxiliary units with fewer rollers and a shortened belt. As a result, at speeds close to 1000-1200 rpm, extraneous sounds appear, reminiscent of rattling. When contacting authorized services, mechanics often mistakenly assume that it is the crankcase protection that is resonating. But in fact, the source of the sound is the vibrating drive belt tensioner. Some “Kulibins” got rid of extraneous noise by independently changing the belt routing pattern. The “original” belt is not suitable for these purposes: a new one had to be selected.

Transmission


The Mitsubishi ASX with the 1.6 liter engine was only equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. No problems were identified with the box. Several owners have used the warranty due to a whistling release bearing.

The remaining engines were combined exclusively with a continuously variable JATCO variator. Most owners are concerned about the reliability of the box, and meticulously react to the slightest deviations from the usual norm. In particular, small shocks are noted when accelerating at speeds of about 2000 rpm or passing the 30-40 km/h mark. But this is normal operation of the variator - the torque converter locks up. There were no complaints about the appearance of trolleybus noise. However, there were serious incidents: several cases of gearbox failure and vehicle immobilization were recorded. During the initial inspection, chips were found in the oil, and the official services did not disclose the final verdict. But it is worth noting that there are only a few such cases. Experience with operating these CVTs on the older brother Outlander XL indicates the absence of widespread problems with CVT.

Chassis

The first Mitsubishi ACX received a loose rear suspension: on uneven surfaces there was swaying, which in turns led to a sharp departure from the trajectory. The dangerous behavior of the crossover has been well tested by drivers who prefer an active driving style. Later, on cars of the 2012 model year, the chassis settings were changed, and the problem was resolved.

The “consumables” category in the ACX suspension includes stabilizer bushings with a service life of more than 35-40 thousand km (from 200 to 400 rubles for an original bushing). Other problems and malfunctions

The Mitsubishi ASX can be seen as the "anti-Qashqai". Stylish outside and inside, spacious, with a large trunk and for reasonable money: all the features of the popular SUV are there. The body as a whole is assembled more neatly than that of the Qashqai, but there is still something to pay attention to. For example, parts of the tailgate that are hidden from view are not painted with clear varnish. Little has been done to improve aerodynamics and protect the body from the abrasive effects of sand and gravel.

The interior trim is the same as that of its main rival, that is, the same “Japanese” Qashqai, and the build quality is similar.

This crossover is distinguished by the innovative technology embedded in the design of the turbo-diesel: the new 1.8-liter Mitsubishi engine is equipped with a phase corrector - none of the competitors in the test have this. Therefore, despite its modest displacement, the ASX is quite capable of competing with all other competitors in terms of performance. At the same time, it has less consumption.

ASX is the smallest of all seven, it has the shortest overhangs. Balanced dynamics and the absence of pronounced skidding and drifting tendencies could provide it with good functional properties, say, in terms of handling on slippery roads. But the overall rating was influenced by the performance of the suspension - when hitting, for example, a drainage well, it makes loud sounds, and the ASX itself bounces wildly. The completely wooden steering with a very “long” rack was also surprising.

Advantages

The taillights are good. Dimensions, LED brake lights and direction indicators are on the side, and a reversing light in an original reflective frame is on the tailgate.

On the partition side of the engine compartment there is a layer of sound-insulating material, on the interior side there is a layer of felt and microporous rubber. All holes for rods and cables are equipped with plastic covers.

The example we tested did not have a multifunction display on the center console. The console itself is carefully crafted, carefully cut into the soft material of the front panel. The radii of curvature are so large that if the console is installed unevenly, no one will notice.

The seats are simple in design and very carefully crafted. The rear one folds in parts; there is a hatch for skis in the center of the backrest.

Flaws

Only the outer side of the side members is protected from sand and gravel; There are no deflectors in front of the fuel tank. In addition, the plastic protection does not completely cover the wheel arches.
