We are often asked about the average budget a novice climber will need to purchase all the necessary equipment and clothing for a successful climb. It is not easy to give an unambiguous answer to this question, since the budget depends on many factors, ranging from the correct choice to specific goals. For example, if you completely trust the sales consultant and buy everything in one store, then the amount will be very large. But if you enlist the recommendations of experienced climbers and take care of purchasing equipment in advance, then you will still have some left over from your budget for a good gift for the family.

In this article, we decided to describe one of the most inexpensive, but at the same time repeatedly tested sets of equipment and clothing for climbing Elbrus as part of a group in the summer.
If you are too lazy to read the entire article, then scroll straight down and check out the final tally.

Why to Elbrus? Because this peak is most popular among novice climbers, but with the set of equipment and clothing described below you can, of course, go not only to Elbrus.

Why as part of a group? In this article we will not describe public tourist and mountaineering equipment: ropes, tents, burners, pots, radio stations, GPS navigators, etc. It is assumed that the group will have all this equipment (when hiking with tourist clubs, including ours, public equipment is included in the cost of participation in the hike).

Why in the summer? Clothing and equipment for climbing Elbrus in winter are very different from clothing and equipment for summer climbing (from May to September inclusive). This is due to the much harsher conditions on the mountain. We strongly do not recommend starting your acquaintance with mountaineering with winter ascents to five-thousanders.

So where to start?

First let's ask ourselves a few questions:
Is this my first trip to the mountains? Am I sure that I will continue to engage in mountaineering?

The questions are important, because renting some equipment and clothing will, by definition, be cheaper than buying it. Usually, for the first ascent, we recommend renting all the climbing equipment (harness, crampons, helmet, ice axe, carabiner) and climbing boots, as well as a down jacket (down jacket), backpack and sleeping bag (for offline routes). Everything else can be bought relatively inexpensively, and can also be used in other cases (not only in the mountains) - for skiing, hiking and walking. This way, even if you no longer go mountaineering, your investment in such equipment and clothing will not be in vain.

Therefore, we will start with a universal set of clothes, and then we will separately consider the cost of renting and purchasing climbing equipment, a down jacket and warm mittens, a backpack and a sleeping bag.

Universal set of clothes

1. Thermal underwear (pants + jacket). We buy a jacket at Decathlon Freshwarm WED'ZE and XWARM WED'ZE pants. 2150 rub.

2. Fleece jacket. Quechua Forclaz 400. 1500 rub.

We buy Queshua Forclaz 100 at Decathlon. 2000 rub.

Renting or purchasing climbing boots:

You will find detailed information on choosing boots for climbing Elbrus in.
And here we will compare prices for the purchase and rental of the main models of mountaineering boots used for climbing Elbrus in the summer.

1. Double-layer plastic boots Koflach Arctic Expe. Optimally suitable for climbing in May (as well as similar models Scarpa Vega, Asolo AFS 8000, etc.). Cost of purchasing these boots: 23,000 rub.Rental cost for 14 days in Moscow rentals, taking into account the discount from our club: RUB 2,500 The cost of rental in the Elbrus region for 10 days, taking into account the discount from our club: RUR 3,900

Cost of purchasing these boots: from 16,000 rub.The cost of rental in the Elbrus region for 10 days, taking into account the discount from our club: RUB 3,500

As you can see, renting boots will be much cheaper.

2. Urban down jackets. Some models of urban down jackets may be suitable for climbing Elbrus in the summer. If you think that you have just such a down jacket, send us a photo of it by email and we will tell you our opinion.

3. Insulated mittens. An example of good and not too expensive mittens: Creative Mitten V3. These are not the cheapest mittens (you can find them cheaper at Decathlon or Sportmaster), but your hands (like your feet) are the weakest point when climbing (they get cold the fastest). Therefore, you need to save on this point with caution. Purchase price: 2870 rub.(including a 20% discount from our club). The cost of renting down mittens for 14 days at a Moscow rental office, taking into account the discount from our club: 800 rub.The cost of rental in the Elbrus region for 10 days, taking into account the discount from our club: 800 rub.

Rent or purchase of mountain glasses:

In our opinion, it is better to have your own glasses. One of the cheapest options is to buy glasses at Decathlon. Please note that the lens has a darkening degree of at least 4. The cost of such glasses: 1600 rub.Rental glasses are often scratched, and the rental deposit often exceeds the cost of new glasses from Decathlon.

Rent or purchase of a backpack and sleeping bag:

1.Backpack. Classic and proven model: Deuter Patagonia 90+15. Purchase price: 11,000 rub. Rental cost for 14 days in Moscow rentals, taking into account the discount from our club: 1800 rub. 2. A sleeping bag with a comfort temperature no higher than -5. One of the most inexpensive and at the same time good sleeping bags: Rock Empire Blizzard. Price: 5500 rub.Rental cost for 14 days in Moscow rentals, taking into account the discount from our club: 2500 R. The cost of rental in the Elbrus region for 10 days, taking into account the discount from our club: 3000 rub.

Final count:

Buying a universal set of clothes: RUB 10,150

Rent a full set of climbing equipment in our rental: RUB 3,200

Rent of climbing boots and mittens: RUB 3,500 + 800 rub.

Renting a backpack and sleeping bag (for independent hikes): 1,800 rub. + 2,500 rub.

Buying climbing glasses: 1,600 rub.

Total total amount: RUB 23,550Total rental price for an off-grid hike: RUB 11,800. For a hike without a backpack and sleeping bag: 7,500 rub.

The rental amount is calculated “to the maximum” - that is, for the entire trip. In practice, if we go down the mountain faster and return the equipment earlier, then the money for unused days is returned to us.

How else can you reduce this amount?

1. Rummage through the closet. Surely you already have a hat, thin gloves, woolen socks, and maybe a membrane jacket, a city down jacket or insulated pants.
2. Ask friends. If your friends go to the mountains, then they probably have a lot from the above list and perhaps they can lend you something.
3. Climb on Avito, through the “alpine flea market” and other similar groups in contact. In the case of mountaineering clothing, buying used is normal practice.

The success of climbing Elbrus largely depends on the right equipment. Before your trip, you should call friends and acquaintances who are interested in tourism and borrow their equipment for the duration of the trip, if you don’t have your own. Some clothing and climbing equipment can be bought, but the price for quality items is usually high, and they are needed only for a few days. If you are not involved in mountaineering or tourism and are going on a tour to take a break from the bustle of the city, a justified decision would be to rent the necessary equipment.

When starting a new hobby, you always face the problem of equipment. This is especially true in relation to mountain tourism and mountaineering. It’s very easy for beginners to buy extra things that won’t even be useful for basic-level climbs. Therefore, for the first time, it is more profitable to rent climbing equipment.

How to choose

The most important thing for a climber is a helmet. If you go somewhere other than a climbing wall, then a helmet is required. It protects your head from pebbles falling from above and collisions with a rock. The helmet should be tight and of the right size - too large will slide down and block your vision. There are no standards for such protection in Russia, so focus on international ones - for example, the certificate of the International Union of Mountaineering Associations.

The safety system depends on the chosen sport. There are different models for mountain tourism, mountaineering and rock climbing. Advanced level - for mountain all-around. The difference is in the width of the belts, weight and comfort. Mountain climbs sometimes require you to hang in harnesses for several hours, while classes at the climbing wall are quite fast. Check with your landlord to see if the chosen harness is suitable for you.

The next critical point of choice is carabiners. They are needed to secure belay or equipment. Carbines vary in material and design. They are mainly made from steel or aluminum, but there are also auxiliary plastic options that can withstand no more than 50 kilograms. Pear-shaped models are almost universal - both secure a load and put several climbers on a self-belay. D-shaped ones are used to organize crossings, and guides are rented by beginning climbers - they eliminate dangerous loads.

Climbing equipment also available for rent include ice axes, headlamps and descending devices. Ice axes will be very useful if you decide to climb snow-capped peaks and glaciers. They are chosen depending on the grip and height of the climber. Flashlights are useful for speleology and night crossings. Finally, special descending devices are used to quickly descend the rope. They also vary depending on the sport.

All this is the minimum set of climbing equipment that must be rented for the first ascent.
