Diagnostics of the technical condition of a Subaru XV car is one of the most important components of safe driving. It helps to avoid situations of premature wear of important spare parts and to notice in time possible problems with the operation of main systems. But only a qualified Subaru specialist can determine the likelihood of a breakdown. Therefore, at U Service Sunrise service centers, we have assembled professionals who have been working with these vehicles for many years.

Subaru diagnostics and repairs are carried out using modern equipment, using original Japanese spare parts. Together with the skill of specialists, this results in high quality of all work.

Maintenance of a Subaru car at an official dealer is the key to the reliability of the crossover and a guarantee of the safety of the driver and passengers. Unlike non-core services, here they pay a lot of attention to the specific features of the Subaru XV and take them into account when performing repair work.

The Subaru XV edition of the German magazine “Auto Bild” began a long marathon in Hamburg in June 2012. Immediately after the first trip, a remark appeared in the logbook: “The engine pulls well, but sounds like a bulldozer.” It's just that the grumpy test editor is well acquainted with the Legacy's fairly quiet 147-horsepower boxer diesel engine. The noticeable noise of the turbodiesel was extremely surprising.

“Is this normal?” - exclaims his colleague, who discovered cheap plastic in the interior of a relatively expensive car worth 33,000 Euros. Another editor marvels: “Hard springs and soft shock absorbers?! So is the Subaru XV more sporty or comfortable? It’s too early to praise the Japanese crossover. Engine roar, cheap plastic, oak chassis. But maybe these are little things that you shouldn’t worry too much about? This is a Subaru that can drive without problems for 20 years. After 24 months and 100,000 km it will be known that this is not so.

After a check analysis of the car, DEKRA experts were in for an unpleasant surprise. The piston heads in the first and third cylinders are melted at the edges. The cylinder walls show clear signs of wear. A few thousand more kilometers and the boxer diesel engine would have been knocked out, experts are sure.

The cause of the incident, according to experts, was overheating due to improper operation of the injection system. A check of Denso injectors revealed deviations in the amount of fuel supplied at partial load conditions, which led to an increase in temperature. Engine failure would be inevitable.

But that's not the only thing that could immobilize the Subaru XV. Upon inspection of the transmission components, it was discovered that the clutch did not have much time left to operate. And this despite the fact that it had already been replaced at a mileage of 52,139 km. Thus, mechanics come to the conclusion that the clutch life is slightly more than 50,000 km.

When traveling over lightly rough terrain with a light load, a burning smell often appeared. The boxer torque is probably overloading the clutch. It's a pity! Short overhangs, relatively high ground clearance and a small wheelbase are ideal for driving across fields and meadows. But frequent clutch replacement is too expensive.

On the highway, the Subaru XV feels right at home. The test car spent most of its time touring Europe. Despite the high speeds and the gas pedal often deeply recessed to the floor, the crossover consumed only about 8 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km.

On long trips, the energetic engine and comfortable driving position were a pleasure. However, after about half of the test journey, the back of the driver's seat began to make an unpleasant cracking noise. At the same time, glitches of the navigation system and endless error messages from the on-board computer were unnerving. So the XV sounded the alarm at 18,530 km - the engine did not have enough oil. However, the dipstick showed three quarters. In addition, a message about the failure of the automatic vehicle dynamics control system has repeatedly appeared. One day, the power steering switched off for a short time. But during the stop, mysterious forces healed him, and the car continued on its way as if nothing had happened. This never happened again.

Soon the back of the driver's seat creaked, folds appeared on the seat cushion, and the upholstery fabric fluffed up a little. In addition, the heating element is moved too close to the backrest.

The fact that the Subaru XV is not ready to offer long-term quality became obvious from the very beginning. After 30,000 km, the squeaking, creaking, and crackling noises did not stop. One got the impression that the car costs at least half as much. Sources of noise were discovered during disassembly. Plastic elements of decor, interior and fairings are secured with flimsy plastic clips. Over time, they weaken and parts begin to dangle and rattle. Accident? An inspection of new cars showed that this is not the case. Noise in the cabin is only a matter of time - the plastic clips are just as flimsy.

The plastic cover clips in the engine compartment are loose, making cracking noises.

DEKRA expert Günter Schiele criticized the corrosion protection. In most cases, minor signs of corrosion are just a cosmetic flaw. But the detected rust is critical for a two-year-old car. After 100,000 km, the Subaru XV was still unable to win any love for itself. Even the air conditioning reinforced the negative impression. Firstly, it is charged with a new generation of flammable refrigerant R 1234yf. Secondly, during the last trip in the summer in 30-degree heat, the air conditioner requested service.

Insufficient protection against corrosion at the point of contact of the ground wire: the screw is rusty and the connection is corroded. In addition, small pockets of corrosion were found on the suspension and exhaust system elements.

100,000 km on a Subaru? The test editors thought that this would be a mere formality. They did not expect a whole mountain of problems. We can only hope that the Japanese will correct the shortcomings as quickly as they brought the new model to the market. Otherwise, it is very easy to lose the good image that has been developed over the years.

Faults and costs

18,350 km – warning about too low oil level. False alarm – level is normal.

52,139 km – clutch failure

60,910 km – warning about the oil level being too low. Again a false alarm - the level is normal.

72,911 km – replacement of the lamp in the right brake light (780 rubles).

76,826 km – replacement of front brake discs and brake pads (13,700 rubles).

86,380 km – a short-term failure in the operation of the GPS navigator.

88,270 km – replacement of the front windshield after being hit by a stone.

92,700 km – replacement of the license plate light bulb (120 rubles).

The Subaru XV is not particularly spacious: the trunk can accommodate only 380 liters. In addition, the bottom edge is too high - 79 cm. The thin carpet upholstery is stretched and secured well. The plastic of the wheel arches is prone to scratches and makes strange sounds. The quality of finishing leaves much to be desired.

At the end of 2011, the Subaru family of cars was replenished with another compact crossover, which quickly gained popularity in the Russian market due to its combination of functionality, comfort and driving style. But in the process of not so long-term use by car owners, a number of weaknesses and shortcomings of the XV were identified, which are important for every potential buyer to know and remember before purchasing.

  • Cars with LPG;
  • High engine oil consumption;
  • Variable speed drive;
  • Engine.

Now more details...

Engine oil consumption

All sold Subaru configurations are equipped with a new FB series engine with a transverse arrangement and horizontal piston stroke, which is a feature of all Subaru engines. From replacement to replacement, which is about 15 thousand km, about 4 liters of low-viscosity oil are poured. Official dealers use 0W-20 engine oil to save fuel. When purchasing, ask the owner what oil consumption he has. If the consumption is about a liter, as indicated in the instruction manual, then this is considered acceptable. If the seller reports that the engine does not consume oil at all, then this is either cunning or ignorance.

Gas equipment

If a Subaru car has gas equipment and its mileage is more than 60-100 thousand km, then when deciding to purchase a car with gas equipment, it is important to analyze the pros and cons. Even the most modern equipment on a Subaru transverse engine after 60,000 km. requires not only valve adjustment, but also additional checks at a car service center, which will require significant costs. Therefore, before purchasing a Subaru XV with LPG, you need to make the right decision.

Possible engine problems

The engines installed on the XV were gasoline and diesel 2.0, but only gasoline ones were officially imported into our country. Petrol 1.6 and 2.0 l. engines differ in consumption of about 9-11 l./100 km. If the check engine light continues to light when you start the engine, then there is hardly any need to further understand what’s wrong. Repairing Subaru engines is quite expensive, so any engine-related indicator lights on the dashboard indicate that something is wrong with the engine.

Subaru paintwork

Like every second-hand car, there should be some chips on the hood and front bumper. If they are missing, and the headlights look new, then be sure to open the hood and look at the condition of the mounting bolts and side members. They must be symmetrical and without signs of unscrewing or repair. More accurate data can be obtained by measuring the paint thickness of the roof, pillars and body in a circle with a device. If the device shows increased paint thickness on the roof and pillars, you should abandon this car, since this car may have been in an accident and as a result was repaired.

In addition to the manual transmission, the XV was equipped with a chain variator, which has a special mode for driving with ESP disabled. Some people didn’t like the CVT because of the slow acceleration, but if the car doesn’t twitch when driving and in position N, then it will last for quite some time. But it is important to remember that almost all CVTs on any make and model of car are not as narrow or durable as automatic or manual transmissions.

Other Subaru problem areas

— Steering rack (a problem on many cars);
— Catalysts;
— Radiator caps are leaking;
— Failure of the connecting rod bearing.

The main disadvantages of the Subaru XV

  1. Absent urethra;
  2. Short armrest;
  3. Low-power blowing of the edges of the windshield;
  4. Small luggage compartment volume;
  5. Noise insulation;
  6. Due to the shape of the body and air currents, the car quickly becomes covered with dirt;
  7. Creaking seats;
  8. Crickets in the front panel;
  9. Poor headlight washer function.

Conclusion.

By purchasing such a car, you can get a decent all-wheel drive car made in Japan for our roads. But it is important to remember that when buying a car, it is necessary to carefully carry out diagnostics, both visually and using special equipment, in order to avoid subsequent significant financial costs. You should know that Subaru XB is more expensive to maintain than some other Japanese cars.

Dear current and future owners of Subaru XV, write in the comments about the weaknesses, diseases and shortcomings of your car identified during operation.
