If we talk about prestige, then the cars are noticeably budget-friendly and do not evoke any special admiration or respect either on the road or in the city. On the other hand, Japanese cars are valued in our country, and the manufacturer relied on this.

We drove two different Datsuns for two months and came to the conclusion that the optimal choice is a sedan with a manual in the mid-upper configuration. But the mi-Do hatchback is one of the most affordable models with an automatic transmission on the Russian market. And for the sake of this, some inconveniences can probably be tolerated. For example, that you are unlikely to ever be able to get used to the strange behavior of the brake pedal, which I talked about in detail in the first part of the long-term Datsun test. Probably, the headlights and radiator grille for this model will be in high demand.
Another feature of the automatic Datsun is the ability to... stall while stopping! Once again, a car with an automatic transmission, without newfangled start-stop systems, can stall during a stop. Datsun representatives are aware of this problem and promise to fix it soon. The automatic selector also does not shine with convenience - when you turn on D, no, no, you will slip further into position 1 or 2. You realize the mistake after the start, when the gearbox, following the instructions not to shift higher, makes the engine run noisily at higher speeds.

The doors are thin and close loudly, and when you turn on the audio system, cheap speakers make a dull thud.

In the sedan's interior, you can see how the plastic linings on the A-pillars of the roof have swelled from heating by the hot summer sun. The interior of both models has a pronounced “Zhiguli” aroma. There are also questions about ergonomics: to close the driver's door from the inside, you have to literally dive into the opening. The steering wheel is not adjustable for reach, so not everyone will find the ideal fit. But the comfortable chairs are pleasing: covering a long route in them will not be difficult. There are also small joys in the cabin: an easy-to-read instrument panel, a convenient niche for a mobile phone, and a turn signal trained for triple blinking.

What pleased me most with the Datsuns was that they were easy to drive fast. Excellent visibility, a very peppy engine and an omnivorous suspension allow you to rush without having to worry about the road. True, you will have to come to terms with almost motorcycle-like rolls, as well as the fact that there is no more reliable information on the steering wheel than on the central television channels.

The revived Japanese brand Datsun, which belongs to Nissan, is now focused on producing budget cars. The manufacturer's first model was the budget sedan Datsun on-DO, developed specifically for the Russian market. Its presentation took place on April 4, 2014 in Moscow.
The new Datsun on-DO 2019 (photo and price) is built on the basis of the Lada Kalina 2, and specialists from the Nissan global center located in Japan worked on the design of the model. The car received a hexagonal radiator grille, which has become a signature feature of Datsun models, large lighting equipment and a large rear overhang.

In general, the appearance of the 2019 Datsun on-DO resembles Grant, especially in profile. But the abandonment of windows in the rear pillars visually made the already impressive stern even heavier. This makes the sedan look somewhat disproportionate and heavy.
The overall length of the Datsun on-DO is 4,337 mm - this is 77 mm longer than that of the Lada Granta, but their width (1,700) and height (1,500) are completely identical. At the same time, the trunk volume of the Datsun is 530 liters (10 liters larger than the Grant compartment), and the ground clearance is as much as 185 millimeters (when fully loaded, the ground clearance decreases to 168 mm).
The architecture of the sedan's interior is also very similar to Grant's. The steering wheel and instrument panel, climate control unit and dashboard were borrowed from the latter. But the design of the front panel and the organization of the center console are designed in a different style.
For a long time, only the 1.6-liter 8-valve VAZ engine, available with 82 and 87 hp, was available as a power unit for the Datsun on-DO 2019. (140 Nm). It is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission (a version with a four-speed Jatco automatic appeared in the fall of 2016). The entry-level sedan accelerates from zero to hundreds in 12.9 seconds. (the 87-horsepower version is 0.7 s faster), and the top speed is 165 and 173 km/h, respectively.
In the fall of two thousand and seventeen, a sixteen-valve 1.6 with a power of 106 hp appeared in the line, but, unlike the original, here the main pair for it was changed from 3.7: 1 to 3.9: 1, which made it possible to reduce the acceleration time to hundreds from 10.9 (on Ladas) to 10.5 seconds. For now, the top-end engine is only available with automatic transmission, but in the future it will also be available with an automatic transmission.
Car production was established at the Volzhsky Automobile Plant in Togliatti, sales of the new product started in the summer of 2014. The price of the new Datsun on-DO 2019 in the basic Access version is 461,000 rubles, and the cost of the car in more advanced Trust and Dream trim levels starts from 493,000 and 552,000 rubles, respectively. The surcharge for automatic transmission (available only for the 87-horsepower engine) is 50,000 rubles, and versions with a 106-horsepower engine are 15,000 more expensive than the 87-horsepower ones.
- The initial version of the sedan is equipped with a driver's airbag, electric power steering, ABS + EBD (electronic brake force distribution), brake assist (BAS), height-adjustable steering column, heated front seats and folding rear seat backs.
- The intermediate version of Trust has two front airbags, fog lights, electrically adjustable and heated side mirrors, an on-board computer and central locking. And for an additional fee, such a car can be equipped with climate control and a multimedia system with Bluetooth and four speakers.
- Finally, the top-end Datsun on-DO is already equipped with multimedia and climate control as standard, plus the Dream version sports rear electric windows and 15-inch alloy wheels. At the same time, a stabilization system, side airbags, light and rain sensors, rear parking sensors and a standard navigation system with a 7.0-inch color display are optionally available.
To implement the model, a branded dealer network is being created, which at first was represented only in 15 cities (Volgograd, Voronezh, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Omsk, Orenburg, Ryazan, Samara, Tyumen, Ulyanovsk, Ufa, Khabarovsk, Chelyabinsk), but over time it should cover all major cities, and the number of centers will reach hundreds.
The decoding of the name of this model also deserves special mention. According to the manufacturer, the word “DO” is associated with Japanese traditional culture and is translated into Russian as “path” (also means movement), and “on” is consonant with the pronoun “he,” which is intended to “emphasize the masculine component in the character of the car.”
In general, the name of the car can be translated as “the brand’s desire to open access to mobility and freedom of movement for everyone.”

In 1926, Tokyo-based DAT Motors merged with Osako-based Jitsuyo Jidosha Co., also known as Jitsuyo Motors (established in 1919 as a subsidiary of Kubota). In Osaka, Jitsuyo Jidosha began producing the three-wheeled Gorham enclosed cab vehicle in 1920, and produced a four-wheeled version the following year. From 1923 to 1925, the company produced cars and trucks under the name Lila.
In 1930, the Japanese government issued a regulation allowing cars with an engine capacity of up to 500 cm³ to be driven without a driver's license. DAT Jidosha Seizo Co., Ltd. began developing a series of 495cc cars to capture a new market segment, calling the new small cars "Datson" - meaning "Son of DAT".
In 1931, DAT Jidosha Seizo Co., Ltd. became a subsidiary of Tobata Casting Co., Ltd. By this time, the first cars with 495 cm³ engines were assembled. The first series of cars was called the Datson Type 10, and about ten of these cars were sold in 1931. In 1932, about 150 cars were sold, called the model Datson Type 11. In 1933, the Japanese government issued a new regulation allowing cars with an engine up to 750 cc to be driven. without a driver's license. Datsun has increased the displacement of its engines to the maximum allowed. These large cars were called Type 12.
In 1934, the company name was changed to Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. When Nissan took control of DAT, the name "Datson" was changed to "Datsun" because "son" also means "loss" from the Japanese 損, and also in honor of the sun that appears on the national flag.
By 1935 the company had established a true production line in the Henry Ford mold, producing a car very similar to the Austin 7. There is evidence that six of these early Datsun cars were exported to New Zealand in 1936.
After Japan went to war with China in 1937, passenger car production was limited. Therefore, by 1938, the Datsun plant was focused on creating trucks for the Imperial Japanese Army.
When the Pacific War ended, Datsun provided transport for the occupying forces. This continued until car production resumed in 1947. As before the war, Datsun models continued to borrow from Austin Motor Company cars: the Austin A40 Devon and Austin A40 Somerset.
