The second incarnation of the Suzuki SX4. Weaknesses of the Suzuki CX4: technical characteristics, test drive Suzuki sx4 hatchback technical characteristics

The once popular urban crossover Suzuki SX4 in Russia has been updated and appears in a slightly different guise - more stylish and modern. The “Japanese”, which is known in Europe under the name S-Cross, after restyling began to attract even more glances than before, because the manufacturer corrected a number of shortcomings of its predecessor and tried to make its “SUV” as attractive as possible. Some may like the SX4 2017, others may not, but the fact remains that the model is interesting. True, it’s a little expensive for a Russian car enthusiast... Read about what’s interesting about the new product from the Japanese automobile industry, and how it differs from the previous version, in our review!

Design

Suzuki designers who worked on the appearance of the SX4 2017 obviously had a hard time: after all, turning a monster into a handsome man is not an easy task. Only the owner of the crossover has the right to judge how well they coped with their task, but one thing is for sure: the design definitely turned out to be more attractive, although still controversial. If you close the Suzuki nameplate on the false radiator grille, similar to the Jimny “mini-tank” grille, you will be able to see some similarities with cars of the Italian brand Maserati. The SX4 grille is now made in the form of vertical chrome fins (the old version has horizontal plastic ones), and the huge head optics have a new design and LED running lights. In addition, the exterior features modernized bumpers, a short hood, a fairly high roof and a large windshield.

The side line of the body has undergone virtually no changes. On the sides of the car there are large informative rear-view mirrors and plastic protective linings, hinting at excellent off-road performance. The “stern” also remained almost untouched: here only a plastic trim appeared on the apron and the rear lights changed slightly, which, by the way, like the headlights, were created using LED technology. Thanks to all the innovations, the restyled SUV generally looks more aggressive compared to its predecessor.

Design

The SX4 of the 2017 model year is based on the platform from the pre-reform crossover. The design has not changed: an independent MacPherson spring suspension is installed at the front, and a semi-independent spring suspension at the rear. Ground clearance remains at the same level - 180 mm. The AllGrip 4WD all-wheel drive transmission is also familiar from the pre-restyling car: it allows you to choose between 4 driving modes - Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock - depending on the road situation. For those who do not need all-wheel drive, front-wheel drive modifications are available.

Adaptation to Russian conditions

The updated SX4 with its 18-centimeter ground clearance and all-wheel drive is not afraid of Russian roads, but it is not recommended to get carried away with heavy off-road trips - you should remember that this car is not a full-fledged SUV. To conquer the vast expanses of our country, the new product also received additional anti-corrosion treatment for the body. The sound insulation of the “Japanese” is quite good. Of course, in the cabin at times you can hear noise from the suspension, you can hear the whining of the engine at high speeds and the whistling of air in the area of the A-pillars, but the SX4 2017 is definitely quieter than its famous “relative” Vitara.

Comfort

During the modernization, the model's interior materials have improved - now they are certainly no worse than those of modern Subaru and Nissan cars. The original front panel and climate control buttons are made of soft plastic and are pleasant to the touch. The dual-zone climate control is stylish in a European way, but there is a small complaint about the design of the new seven-inch touchscreen of the multimedia system, borrowed from the Vitara - dark glossy inserts are used for the finishing, which constantly leave fingerprints. Elegant ventilation deflectors hang above the touch display, giving the center console a harmonious and complete look. The instrument panel is simple and clear, with pleasant backlighting. The steering wheel is comfortable, multifunctional, and there are no serious complaints about it. The front seats are more or less comfortable, despite the lack of pronounced lateral support, and have adjustment and heating functions. The first row is quite spacious - especially a lot of free space above your head. There is also plenty of space in the rear of the cabin, for which we can thank the knee recesses in the backs of the front seats. With relatively compact body dimensions, which have not increased by a millimeter after restyling, the rear sofa of the 2017 SX4 is quite suitable for comfortably seating three people. The sofa has thick padding, a folding armrest and a backrest that can be folded in a 60:40 ratio.

With the backrest folded down, the luggage compartment volume is at least 430 liters. It's not the largest trunk in its class, but it's still very roomy.

Any configuration of the new SX4 includes as many as seven airbags, including front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger, a driver's knee airbag, curtains, as well as a set of electronic assistants, including:

The top-end crossover is equipped with a Bosch infotainment complex with a seven-inch high-resolution touch screen, control buttons on the steering wheel, navigation with 3D function, a slot for SD cards, Bluetooth and a USB connector for connecting mobile devices. Suzuki Vitara and Baleno are equipped with a similar touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink technologies. The Bosch “multimedia” features a user-friendly interface, the ability to display images from the rearview camera while reversing, quick responses to short touches and a sound control function, like Lexus. Thanks to a modern multimedia system, you can enjoy your favorite music and talk on the phone without being distracted from driving.

Suzuki CX4 Specifications

The SX4 2017 engine range includes a 1.4-liter Boosterjet direct-injection petrol turbo engine, which came from the Vitara and produces 140 hp, as well as a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated M16A petrol engine with VVT variable valve timing technology and with a return of 117 hp. The first engine is paired only with a six-speed Aisin hydromechanical automatic transmission, which replaced the CVT transmission, and the second is combined with a five-speed manual transmission. Both engines comply with the Euro-5 environmental standard. The actual average fuel consumption is less than 7 liters. per 100 km.

The Suzuki CX4 debuted in 2006. The company presented its new model at the Geneva salon. Its full name is Sport Crossover 4x4 Seasons, but it was rarely used in wide circles. At the beginning of development, the Japanese company decided to team up with the Italian Fiat. The result of joint work was Sedici in Italy. The car is still in demand among consumers on the Russian market. The owners fell in love with it, first of all, because of the cost, which was combined with the good cross-country ability of the model.

However, over time, the weak points of the Suzuki CX4 became known: design, cramped interior, increased noise level, stiff suspension, and there is no need to mention passenger comfort at all. However, the car's pricing policy prevailed and contributed to an increase in sales. Why did it happen? But the fact is that, along with the above disadvantages, there are some characteristics, in the presence of which the disadvantages no longer seem so significant.

After restyling in 2009, noticeable changes appeared. In general, we can say that they benefited the car. A year later, the updated SX4 appeared on the Russian markets.

Second generation of crossover SX4

In 2013, a new version of Suzuki was released. have increased significantly, there is more space in the cabin. Now the SX4 model rightfully bears the title of crossover. Its length increased by as much as 150 mm and became 4300 mm, the width also underwent changes (1765 mm), which was a difference of 10 mm with the previous version. Increasing the wheelbase by 100 mm improved the stability of the Suzuki CX4. The technical characteristics of the new version were impressive: maneuverability and controllability increased by several levels, and this, despite the previous, albeit somewhat modified, platform. It is worth paying attention to the reduction in height by 30 mm. Ground clearance of 180 mm allows you to confidently pass the most difficult sections of the road.

It should be noted that so far there is no excitement among fans of this model. The old version is still held in high esteem. Manufacturers decided to add the “Classic” index to the name of the car (2006-2012).

Advantages overview

In the updated Suzuki CX4 (the technical characteristics of which have changed for the better), rear passengers can now feel much more spacious. The increase in length was precisely in the rear and trunk. The driver's seat also did not go unnoticed. In it, the longitudinal adjustment of the seat has become noticeably longer, and this allows even tall people to feel comfortable. It has also become more comfortable for the front passenger, whose seat is now height adjustable, just like the driver’s. Although it’s a little hard to sit in the front, the support on the sides is beyond praise.

Depending on the configuration, you can enjoy a panoramic sunroof, as well as everything that is typical of a modern car. We are, of course, talking about the navigation system, xenon lighting, and parking sensors. The manufacturer did not forget about climate control in two zones. The advantages also include excellent visibility, which is ensured by relatively narrow pillars and large mirrors.

Finding flaws

Taking into account the subjectivity of opinions from the outside, the car began to look noticeably more modern. However, the weaknesses of the Suzuki CX4 are still quite pronounced. First of all, there are complaints about the design of the radiator grille, but this flaw, according to many opinions, gives that very “zest”, revealing the face of the car. There is some debate about the shape of the hood. But this component also adds modernity to the appearance of the SX4.

If you look at the shortcomings of the interior, the first thing that catches your eye is the cheap upholstery. The manufacturer decided not to use expensive materials. This shortcoming was compensated for by the design. There is even soft plastic in some parts of the interior. In general, the interior looks very simple, but quite decent.

Key points affecting the cost of a car

  • Ergonomics deserves special mention. “Suzuki CX4” (price from 1 million rubles) deserves a solid “five” in this criterion and one of the highest places in its class.
  • Transformation of seats. Rear passengers can change the angle of their seat backs. And on a hot summer day or on a cold winter evening, you can comfortably place drinks on the center armrest, where there are cup holders.
  • There is a large number of different cavities for placing small household items.
  • Spacious trunk, spare wheel.

The weakest points of the Suzuki CX4

According to user reviews and expert findings, the most vulnerable point in the Suzuki CX4 car is the internal combustion engine. This is where manufacturers have something to think about. This model is offered with only one type of engine. And, it’s worth noting, not very modified.

The Suzuki engine is a naturally aspirated gasoline unit with a capacity of 117 hp. With. and volume 1.6 l. The consumer is given a choice of only the type of transmission - manual transmission or CVT. However, there are also shortcomings in the work of the latter. The accelerator pedal responds unstably to the action of the driver's foot, either tearing the car out of place, or creating an invisible wall in front of it. These points, of course, require improvement.

In lower gears, the Suzuki engine, frankly, is “dull”, and this is unpleasant. But the fact is that the maximum torque is at around 4400 rpm.

But with all this we must pay tribute to the efficiency of the engine. This is 8-9 liters per 100 km in the urban cycle and 6 liters on the highway. The car has all-wheel drive, which creates advantages when moving through snow and mud.

Brief overview of the shortcomings

  • It is worth noting the extremely poor level of sound insulation, at which almost any sound of both the engine and wheels can be heard in the cabin.
  • The suspension is tuned well at first glance, but the weak points of the Suzuki CX4 are serious irregularities on the road; knocking and vibration can be felt when driving over them.
  • Handling is quite confident, but at high speeds there is a build-up.

Another reason for the low demand for the Suzuki SX4

The current pricing policy of this model makes the SX4 much more affordable than its competitors. After all, the maximum configuration will cost the consumer only 1.2 million rubles. This price for a well-equipped crossover is a completely acceptable indicator.

So what actually influences the model’s low sales figures? But the fact is that at the time the car entered the market, the price difference with the previous version of the car was too noticeable. And combined with the low variability of the internal combustion engine, the competitiveness of the new model turned out to be low.

“Suzuki CX4” (1.6 engine with “mechanics”) is quite a worthy choice. The driver gains advantages in acceleration and fuel economy.

Suzuki SX4 is one of the founders of the popular class of subcompact crossovers. It entered the market 8 years ago, remaining popular to this day. Today we will review the Suzuki SX4 New of the 2014 model year.

Features of the new product

One of the reasons why the previous generation SX4 remained in Suzuki dealer showrooms is the fundamental difference between the new car and its predecessor. New SX 4 has expanded in breadth and length, “grown up and matured.” The unusual styling from the Italian studio "Italy Design" is a thing of the past, because the new "Suzuki" was designed by Japanese designers. Due to this, the car has become more conservative, and therefore is perceived as a more respectable car. And the point here is not so much in the increased external dimensions, but in a more traditional approach to the appearance. Now the Suzuki SX4 New, reviews of which are mostly positive, is no longer a cross between a small hatchback, an SUV and a minivan - it is a compact crossover that is quite familiar to the eye and can compete with its classmates. Another thing about the 2014 SX4 is that it looks much more attractive in real life than in photos.

Design

In the appearance, manufacturers focused on three elements. Noteworthy are the large block headlights, which on all versions except the base version are equipped with bi-xenon light and daytime running lights. The entire lower perimeter of the body is protected by unpainted plastic. The design features moderate chrome trim, but the SX 4’s appearance is devoid of any bright design elements. Perhaps this is for the best.

Of course, our hero is not some kind of faded spot in the endless traffic flow. Your eye will always be pleased by the aggressive shapes of the front and rear, very attractive rims, calm lines of the side of the body and spectacular roof rails that cut through the air with their chrome-plated “appearance”. You can see a photo demonstrating the attractiveness of the Suzuki SX4 New design (only positive reviews about it) below.

Dimensions

The dimensions of the new product were slightly increased, which turned the car into a real crossover. The length of the car is 4300 mm, width - 1765 mm, height with roof rails - 1585 mm (for 16-inch wheels) and 1590 mm (for 17-inch wheels). The wheelbase increased to 2600 mm, which increased the capacity of the new Suzuki. The minimum turning radius is 5.2 m. Finally, the Suzuki SX4 New has a ground clearance of 180 mm with 16-inch wheels, and 175 mm with larger wheels.

Interior

Inside, we expect the usual combination of sportiness and simplicity for the Suzuki brand. The interior of the new SX4 is much richer than that of its younger brother. The materials, although inexpensive, are of high quality. The plastic, with the exception of the wide insert on the front panel, is hard, but this does not cause any dissonance. See the photo of the Suzuki SX4 New (its interior) below. In general, everything is pleasant to the eye, not annoying or surprising. The interior is moderately spacious, the placement of all control parts is intuitive and does not require getting used to.

I would also like to mention the steering wheel with a pleasant grip and a wide range of adjustments, as well as the thick, well-profiled seats. At the same time, already in the middle configuration, Suzuki offers keyless entry with an engine start button, paddle shifters for forced gear selection, a 2-zone function for folding rear-view mirrors, parking sensors and much more, which its predecessor was deprived of. We'll talk more about all the trim levels a little later. Thanks to the increased wheelbase, the back row has become much more spacious. The trunk volume has increased by one and a half times with a practical underground niche and a very wide opening.

"Suzuki SX4 New" - technical specifications

The car comes to Europe with diesel and gasoline engines, which perform equally well in all respects. In our market, the Suzuki SX4 New, reviews of which are sometimes much more favorable than those of its closest competitors, is currently available only with one 1.6-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 117 horsepower. The indicators, at first glance, are quite modest, but here it is worth paying attention to the talented Japanese engineering, thanks to which the new crossover is 60 kg lighter.

It should be noted that the engine reaches 6000 rpm, and the peak torque is 156 Nm (accounts for 4400 rpm). By the way, the new engine in the Suzuki SX4 2014 model year is a modernized version of the old one. Unlike its predecessor, the new SX4 has an updated oil pump, lighter pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft. Internal friction of parts was also reduced. Thanks to these modifications, Japanese engineers managed to add a good percentage to power and torque, as well as improve fuel efficiency. The only thing that slightly affected the car was a general decrease in dynamics.

Transmission and fuel consumption

There are still 2 transmission options to choose from: front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive with an electronic clutch driving the rear wheels. Transmissions are offered as follows: five-speed manual and CVT with a choice of 7 virtual gears. The car will please the driver with excellent dynamics, and all-wheel drive will allow you to get out of the most extreme conditions.

As for fuel consumption, the Suzuki SX4 is quite good in this aspect. By the way, only AI-95 gasoline can ensure normal engine performance. With “mechanics” in the Suzuki SX4 New, fuel consumption will be 5 liters on the highway, and in the city - 6.8 liters. The average consumption will thus be about 5.6 liters. With a CVT, the figures will be almost the same: on the highway - 5 liters, in the city - 6.9 liters, mixed driving - 5.7 liters.

Specific aerodynamics can greatly reduce overall fuel consumption. Well, only you should choose the variation. The car also performs well in terms of ecology. The front-wheel drive version of the New SX4 has CO2 emissions of 124 g/km, while the all-wheel drive model increases this figure to 130 g/km.

Controllability

On the road, the new SX4 has nothing in common with its predecessor. Of course, this is not a business class, but when driving the car has become much softer and quieter. Irregularities are “swallowed” by the suspension easily and naturally. At the same time, we are pleased with the excellent balance between handling and cross-country ability: quite sharp responses to steering wheel turns, lively and responsive behavior of the car on turns - all this is combined in the SX with the ability to get through where a regular passenger car would lose bumpers and all the protruding parts of the bottom. To overcome such road troubles, even the front-wheel drive Suzuki SX4 New has increased ground clearance to that of an SUV, has high bumpers and a fairly energy-intensive suspension. Add to this tenacious brakes, a full range of safety systems, including hill hold, stabilization and brake force distribution, and we get a modern, practical and pleasant to drive universal car. You can sign up at any dealership for a trial use of the Suzuki SX4 New. The test will definitely leave you with only pleasant impressions.

Safety

"Suzuki SX4 New" can guarantee all its owners complete peace of mind on the road thanks to amazing stability and a wide range of optional safety gadgets (both active and passive). As standard, the New SX4 is equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESP), brake assist BAS and 7 airbags. In addition, the design of the car uses a variety of means to ensure the safety of pedestrians. According to the results of the EURO NCAP crash test, the car received 5 stars.

As for active safety systems, the car has ABS+EBD, ESP, BAS. Plus, for additional passenger comfort, a maximum speed limiter was specially added, which is an additional feature to cruise control. Passive safety systems include 7 airbags that protect passengers and the driver from frontal, side, and rear impacts. Of course, the car also has seat belts. In addition to all of the above, the specific shape of the hood and the innovative design of body kits, brushes and bumpers make it possible to absorb impacts, while reducing the degree of harm caused to a pedestrian in an accident.

To the list of advantages in terms of safety, you can add Suzuki's proprietary TECT (Total Effective Control Technology), which provides the highest level of passive safety thanks to the use of high-strength steels in the load-bearing structure of the body, as well as in specially designed deformation zones to absorb impacts. This technology makes it possible to maximize the safety of all people in the car in the event of an accident, diverting the impact to the deformation zone.

Options

In Russia, the Suzuki SX4 New is available in 3 trim levels (GL, GLX, GLX+), prices for which we will provide a little later. The basic version is equipped with air conditioning, a CD receiver, fabric inserts in the interior elements, rear and front electric windows, an on-board computer, cruise control, a heater, remote locking and many other little things that increase travel comfort. We have already described the GLX version in detail in the “Interior” section. Finally, the top-end GLX+ will delight you with 17-inch alloy wheels, a wonderful audio entertainment system, a GPS navigator, CVT control paddles, a panoramic double electric sunroof and a huge number of nice accessories.

Prices

To purchase the basic configuration, you will have to empty your wallet by 779 thousand rubles, which is quite normal for such a car. The older auto version will cost a little more - from 879 thousand rubles (the model with a CVT costs more). Finally, the price for the top-end Suzuki New SX4 will be 1 million 119 thousand rubles. Considering all the available filling, it’s not a pity to spend that kind of money. These are the prices currently set for the updated SX4.

Closest competitors

Nowadays, crossovers are becoming more and more popular among drivers. Naturally, automakers around the world are striving to produce more and more new models that could compete with their classmates. In the segment in which the Suzuki SX4 New is offered (you will definitely like the owner's reviews), there are quite a lot of excellent models that deserve a share of your attention. Their list includes cars Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai IX35, Subaru Forester, Nissan Juke, Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Ford Kuga and Mitsubishi ASX. Of course, each of them has its pros and cons, but only you will have to make the final choice.

Bottom line

The new Suzuki SX4 is no longer a niche model, but a real universal “fighter” that continues to gain popularity in the compact crossover class. Of course, everything is learned by comparison, so study different cars, compare, test and choose your path. "Suzuki SX4 New", the reviews of which speak for themselves, may be your good choice.

Any configuration (tuning, add-ons, engine) of the SX4 allows it to remain confident and dynamic on the road, while attracting enthusiastic attention. Stereotypes of car enthusiasts’ thinking regarding the capabilities of such compact cars are shattered by the new mechanism, calibrated like a watch. It became so thanks to the synthesis of the sporty character of an SUV and the strict elegance of passenger cars. As a result, the car has a lightweight, streamlined body, simple but no less stylish, as well as a powerful, robust structure that provides protection for passengers on several levels. The side line of the car is slightly raised upward, which, combined with the large triangular windows, gives it a somewhat wedge-shaped shape. The high ground clearance and wide wheelbase (2500 mm) create an impression of stability, power and assertiveness. The elegant external characteristics of the Suzuki SX4 are complemented by a range of colors used on the car's body. Among the strict metallic shades, the most attractive are Cosmic Black Pearl (black), Sunlight Copper Pearl (orange), Kashmir Blue Pearl (blue), Silky Silver 2 (silver), Galactic Gray (gray), Cool White Pearl (white). The set of matte tones includes Bright Red 5 (bright red) and Superior White (milky white).

The dimensions of the Suzuki SX4 are optimized for life in urban environments. While full-fledged SUVs are looking for a place for convenient parking and stand in traffic jams for hours, the SX4, whose dimensions allow it to successfully maneuver both on the highway and on narrow streets, continues to win the trust of consumers. With a minimum turning radius of only 5.3 meters, this car will help out anyone who has encountered road problems in the city. Its length is 4150 mm, width – 1755 mm, and overall height depends on the type of car drive and can be either 1605 mm for models with 2WD, or 1620 mm for models with 4WD. The weight in the front-wheel drive version is 1650 kg, and with all-wheel drive it is 1685 kg. Thus, the SX4, whose dimensions are optimal for the city, along with its other advantages, deserves special attention.

Excellent visibility is provided by superb headlights, front fog lights, a rearview mirror with day and night modes, and electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors. In addition to this, the windows of the rear doors and luggage compartment are tinted, the windows are equipped with wipers and washers that operate in intermittent mode with the ability to adjust the interval. A strong car body can effectively absorb impact energy in a collision and save passengers. Featuring programmed deformation zones that absorb impact force before it reaches the cabin, this model's body is considered one of the safest in its class. In addition to this, the car is equipped with door reinforcements, improved profiled beams and other reinforcing elements. Its external elements (wide wheel arches, side and lower protective moldings, front and rear bumper covers) harmoniously emphasize the sporty characteristics of the SX4.

The spirit of sport is also characteristic of the interior of the Suzuki SX4. Smooth lines of the interior space emphasize the dynamic style of the car, complemented by high quality finishing materials. The rounded shapes of the interior elements and the central panel indicate the modernity of the car, its special style, and brand affiliation. Two primary colors are used for finishing – black and silver. The latter primarily emphasizes the high cost of basic materials and places sophisticated and slightly aggressive accents. The dashboard of the Suzuki SX4 is ergonomic and informative enough to immediately get all the necessary data about the condition of the car with one glance. Conveniently located, its elements allow for easy, intuitive operation of the machine, and the design echoes the smooth shapes of the entire interior, creating the impression of a single direction. The center stack also houses additional functional amenities such as climate control and audio controls. Other elements of the basic configuration include ESP and ABS systems, door opening and keyless ignition, electric locks and mirrors, an individual control panel for each window, air conditioning, a top brake light, an immobilizer and nine speakers, including a central one. Operating instrumentation has become even easier with the addition of red and blue backlighting. The display also displays the fuel consumption indicators of the Suzuki SX4, time sensors and outside air temperature, as well as the distance that can be driven with the remaining fuel in the tank.

The machine is designed for 5 seats. Optimizing the SX4's interior to suit the individual needs of each driver involves adjusting the height of his seat, which will allow him to sit with greater comfort. The same procedure can be done with the steering block, changing its angle and allowing you to drive the car in a comfortable position. There are audio system control buttons on the steering wheel so that the driver can listen to his favorite songs without being distracted from the road. The fully automatic air conditioning is also controlled by a simple panel that is illuminated from the inside, highlighting the overall design. In addition, the Suzuki SX4 interior is equipped with a convenient shelf under the front passenger seat (a great place to store magazines, maps and other such things) and drink holders between the front seats. Additional amenities inside the Suzuki SX4 include three courtesy lights, heated seats, pockets for storing small items and power windows.

The organization of the internal space of the Suzuki SX4 allows not only the driver and front passenger, but also those sitting in the back row of seats to travel in comfort. The car provides sufficient legroom for a person of any height and build, and the special configuration of the seats allows people sitting on them to take natural poses, which eliminates problems with fatigue or back pain during long trips. Large ground clearance (175-190 mm), large door openings and optimal seat height provide convenient access for all passengers. The rear seats of the Suzuki SX4 are slightly raised, which adds to their advantages excellent visibility. They are divided in a 60:40 ratio, which allows you to fold the seats at any time convenient for the driver and turn the city hatchback into a small truck. In its normal state, the SX4's trunk is small and reaches a volume of only 270 liters. But as soon as you fold down the rear seats, the trunk of the SuzukiSX4 more than doubles in size - up to 625 liters, while having a flat floor, a whole system of cargo holders, and a low side, which is indispensable for a city car and facilitates the process of loading and unloading things. Despite the small size of the Suzuki SX4, the trunk can easily compete in capacity with large SUVs. Its maximum volume, officially declared by the manufacturer, reaches 1045 liters.

The positive characteristics of the SX4 are not limited only to the design of the exterior and interior - its power capabilities also deserve attention. Equipped with a 16-valve high-performance 1.6-liter gasoline engine, the Suzuki SX4 guarantees excellent handling and response to driver inputs. Both base SX4 trims (Outdoor and Urban) are offered with a five-speed manual transmission and a four-mode automatic. Suzuki SX4, equipped with “mechanics”, has a slight advantage in the form of the possibility of particularly precise tuning and using the engine’s potential to the maximum. The automatic transmission of the Suzuki SX4, in turn, greatly simplifies the process of driving a car, which makes it suitable not only for men, but also for women. It is very easy to use and provides the best performance characteristics of the Suzuki SX4. The maximum speed that can be achieved on this model is 170-185 km/h, depending on the configuration, drive system and gearbox, and it reaches “hundreds” in 10.7-13.1 seconds, which is influenced by the same factors. The Suzuki SX4 engine meets strict environmental requirements “Euro 4” (CO2 emissions do not exceed 180 g/km). The SX4's fuel consumption is very modest and amounts to 8.4 liters in the urban cycle for models with 2WD drive and only a liter more for all-wheel drive versions. The off-road cycle demonstrates even more favorable consumption figures - the Suzuki SX4 spends only 5.5-6.2 liters of gasoline per “hundred” for both models. As a result, the combined cycle gives the SX4 Suzuki a consumption of 6.5-7.6 liters of gasoline per hundred kilometers.

A distinctive feature of the Suzuki SX4 is the presence of an “intelligent” three-mode 4x4 system - i-AWD. The first mode (4WD-Auto) does not provide for the transmission of torque to the rear axle under normal road conditions; the electronics will supply torque to the rear axle only when the front wheels slip. In the second mode (4WD-Lock), the center coupling is locked and the torque is divided equally between the axles. This mode is maintained when driving at speeds up to 60 km/h, after overcoming which it automatically changes to the 4WD-Auto mode. The purpose of this mode is to overcome bad sections of the road, devoid of asphalt, or overcome slippery slopes. The third and most important mode is 2WD. And in front of you is a simple front-wheel drive economical car - the Suzuki SX4.

Thus, one cannot fail to note the competitiveness of the Suzuki SX4: the technical characteristics of the car meet all modern requirements. In addition to the above advantages, the Suzuki SX4 has a wide range of modern safety features. Excellent brakes with ABS and EBD, stability control (ESP), excellent visibility, belts with pretensioners and force limiter, ISOFIX child seat mounts, six airbags, including front and side, as well as side curtains. Depending on the configuration and type of drive, the Suzuki SX4 can be purchased for a price ranging from 590 to 800 thousand rubles.

The first generation “SX4 compact crossover” is quite widely known in Russia. Despite the existing popularity and a decent level of sales, updating the car had been asking for a long time, and therefore already in December 2013, the second generation of this model, announced back in March (in Geneva), appeared on our market. At the same time, the first generation crossovers will also remain on sale (until 2015), but with the name “SX4 Classic”, but the new product will be called “New SX4”.

This model was first presented in 2006 at the Geneva Motor Show. The new product was a joint brainchild of the Japanese company Suzuki and the Italian automaker Fiat, while the ItalDesign studio worked on the design. It must be admitted that, despite this, the design was the weakest point of the first SX4, and therefore in 2009 the car was subjected to a noticeable restyling, after which it appeared on the Russian market in 2010.

Let us remember that the Suzuki SX4 did not immediately become a crossover. Initially, the new product was positioned as a front-wheel drive hatchback, but then gradually retrained into an all-wheel drive model and even acquired a sedan version. Now, after a global update and transition to the next generation, the SX4 has finally established itself as a full-fledged subcompact crossover.

The New SX4 has noticeably “matured” in terms of appearance. The slightly ridiculous, “toy-like” pyramid body of the first generation gave way to a stylish, dynamic and modern look with hints of sportiness, thoughtful lines and aerodynamic contours. The crossover has also “matured” in terms of dimensions, adding as much as 150 mm in length to 4300 mm. The wheelbase of the second generation Suzuki SX4 is 2600 mm, showing an increase of 100 mm. The width of the body is 1765 mm (+ 10 mm), but the height, on the contrary, “sank” a little to 1590 mm (- 15 mm). The front and rear track widths are 1535 and 1505 mm, respectively. We especially note the ground clearance - depending on the configuration, the ground clearance of the “second SX4” varies in the range of 175 – 180 mm, which is very important for Russian road conditions. The curb weight of the car in basic equipment is 1085 kg, but in top versions it increases to 1190 kg.

The interior of the five-seater Suzuki SX4 New crossover has been transformed no less than the exterior. Engineers and designers of the Japanese automaker tried to remove all unnecessary things and make the front panel as ergonomic as possible in the spirit of modernity. In many ways, they succeeded, although the appearance of the front panel can hardly be called standard or impressive. The quality of the materials is also not the best, but their “budgetary” nature is compensated by the high quality of fitting of the parts, so we could not find any extra cracks or unnecessary gaps in the cabin.

As for space, there is plenty of it in the front, but there is almost no increase in comfort in the rear, and besides, the leveled roof does not allow rear passengers taller than 180 cm to comfortably fit in.
In turn, the trunk volume has grown more than significantly. Now its basic capacity is stated at 430 liters (previously it was 270 liters), and with the rear row of seats assembled, the useful volume will increase to 1269 liters.

Specifications. In Russia, the Suzuki New SX4 will be offered with only one powertrain option, the role of which is assigned to the M16A VVT gasoline engine. The Japanese decided not to offer a diesel engine to Russian buyers, although it is present on the European market. As for our country, domestic fans of the brand got a 4-cylinder in-line power unit with a displacement of 1.6 liters (1586 cm³) and a multipoint fuel injection system. The maximum power of this gasoline engine is 117 hp, achieved at 6000 rpm. As for torque, its peak of 156 Nm occurs at 4400 rpm. The engine will be coupled with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission from Jatco.

At its core, the “new engine” for the 2nd generation Suzuki SX4 is an old engine that has undergone a deep modernization, during which the pistons, crankshaft, connecting rods were lightened, a new oil pump was installed, and internal friction of parts was reduced. As a result, Japanese engineers managed to achieve a slight increase in power and torque and improved fuel efficiency parameters, but at the same time the dynamics suffered a little.

When the crossover is equipped with a manual transmission, its maximum speed will be about 180 km/h, and the starting acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h will be about 11.0 seconds. In terms of efficiency, a manual engine is quite good: on the highway, consumption of AI-95 gasoline will be about 5.0 liters, within the city limits the consumption will increase to 6.8 liters, but in mixed mode the crossover will need about 5.6 liters. Such a noticeable reduction in fuel consumption was achieved not only through the modernization of the engine, but also through the reconfiguration of the manual transmission, in which the gear ratios of 3, 4 and 5 stages were lengthened.

With the CVT, to be honest, the SX4 is somewhat worse in all respects. The upper speed limit is stated at 170-175 km/h (165 km/h for 4WD). The starting acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h will be about 12.4 seconds. Fuel consumption on the highway will be approximately 5.0 liters, within the city limits you will need 6.9 liters, and in mixed mode - 5.7 liters. For all-wheel drive versions of the crossover with any type of gearbox, the additional “increase” in fuel consumption will be approximately 0.3 liters per 100 km.

As for the diesel engine presented in Europe (118 hp power and 320 Nm of torque + 6-speed manual transmission), its appearance on our market is possible only in the future, when the Japanese manufacturer loses all “fears” regarding the quality of Russian diesel fuel.

The chassis concept of the Suzuki SX4 has not changed. The front also uses an independent design based on MacPherson struts, and the rear uses a semi-independent torsion beam suspension. The suspension is quite energy-intensive and feels confident on dirt roads, but the settings on the rear axle could be made softer. The crossover's all-wheel drive is based on a redesigned AllGrip 4WD system, which has received an additional operating mode, i.e. now there are four of them: “Auto”, “Sport”, “Snow/Mud” and “Lock”. The rear axle, as before, is connected via a multi-plate friction clutch with an electromagnetic drive. At the same time, we note that for the Russian market the clutch will be replaced with one that is more resistant to overheating, which often occurs when slipping in mud or snow. Disc brakes will be used on all wheels, and the steering will be supplemented with electric power steering.

In terms of driver and passenger safety, the new product will offer a fairly serious package, including seven airbags and a number of electronic systems, among which we highlight ABS, EBD, ESP and BAS. In addition, the developers have worked quite seriously on the body - strengthening the design of the doors, as well as adding programmable deformation zones in the front of the car.

Options and prices. On the Russian market, the 2015 Suzuki New SX4 is offered in three configuration options (GL, GLX and GLX+) and ten design variations. The cost of the basic configuration of the GL crossover starts from 1,135 thousand rubles (1.6-liter, front-wheel drive and manual transmission). The version with a CVT is 90 thousand rubles more expensive. The all-wheel drive modification of the Suzuki New SX4 is offered at a price of 1,245 thousand rubles (with “mechanics”) or from 1,325 (with “variator”). The price of the maximum configuration GLX+ will be 1 million 635 thousand rubles.
