How to install a “start stop” button instead of the ignition switch. Installing a start-stop button instead of the ignition switch with your own hands How to make a VAZ start with a button

Today, in modern cars there is often a system that allows you to start the car from the Start Engine button. This option allows you to do away with the ignition switch, and starting the engine becomes simpler and more convenient.

In this article we will look at installing a universal kit costing 1,200 rubles, which is suitable for most cars. In a specific example, it will be installed on an OKU, VAZ 1111.

Buy a start stop button (start stop engine)

The button discussed in this example (and shown in the video below) costs 1200 rubles and you can buy it using the link to aliexpress: http://ali.pub/1qcg1t

Kit contents, functions and characteristics

The kit includes:

  • Control block
  • Engine start button
  • radio frequency (RFID) key tag 2 pcs.
  • electromagnetic ring for reading magnetic key
  • Connection diagram of the control unit to the vehicle's electrical wiring

The control unit has two levels of protection built into it. Without a key (tag), it is impossible to turn on the ignition. And without pressing the brake pedal, it will not be possible to start the car engine. This is done so that you do not accidentally start the car while it is left in gear.

The button can operate in two modes. When the brake pedal is depressed and pressed briefly, the starter is turned on for a second. This is enough to start a working engine. When pressed for a long time, the starter turns on until you release the button. This is necessary for starting in the cold season.

If, when you have the key, you do not press the brake pedal, then pressing the button turns on the car’s ignition, this is necessary so that you can turn on any electrical equipment of the car.

Also for the forgetful, when the ignition is turned off and the key is left in the ring, the control unit signals this.

Installing the engine start button yourself

The button itself has a convenient fastening, so it can be placed in any place you like, you just need to cut the required hole.

To connect the wires, you need to connect the cable from the control unit to the standard electrical wiring of the car

The OKA Car (1111 and 1113) has an ignition switch from the ninth family (VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099) and the connection of this kit will be similar for all these cars.

According to the diagram included in the kit, you need to connect + 12V and - to the control unit. The wire coming from the unit to the starter must be connected to connector 5 of the chip (red wire). The ACC pin is connected to connector 3, and to turn on the ignition, the pins from the ON1 and ON2 block are connected to the white wire going to the ignition relay and the blue wire, connector 4 in the chip. If the car has a sample ignition switch, without using an ignition relay, then the blue-white wire (to the 6th connector of the chip) must also be connected to terminal ON1 or ON2.

Similarly, the start engine button can be installed on any other car.

This video demonstrates the operating algorithm and all the functionality of this kit:

I decided to talk again about the button with which you can start the engine without using the ignition switch. That is, it is used, but only to turn on the ignition. But directly in order to crank the starter until the engine starts and the proposed circuit works.

Some may ask: why is this necessary? There may be several answers, firstly, after all, this, according to many people (including myself), makes the car more aesthetically pleasing or something, it’s nice to look at a beautiful backlit button installed in the car with your own hands. It’s nice to start a car using a button rather than a key; you’ll never overexert the starter, everything happens automatically from the moment you press the button. Well, the practical point is that many owners of used foreign cars have a broken ignition switch. Not only is it not cheap, but it is also difficult to obtain for some car models.

So, let's move on to the diagrams. The first one is better known on the Internet, very simple, implemented by the author in his car and showed excellent work:

The button here can be used without locking, but then it will need to be held until the engine starts. It is not necessary to quickly release it, since the relay will still de-energize immediately after the engine starts.

The lamp in the instrument panel is a battery charge indicator lamp. For simplicity, the solenoid relay is not shown, only the starter is shown; of course, we connect the output of the contact group Rel1 to the solenoid relay. Switch S1 is necessary so that an unlucky driver, having forgotten about the button in his car, does not drive into the car in front or somewhere else when turning on the ignition, if he left the start button on (after all, we have it with a lock). Instead, a neutral gear sensor can be used, the contacts of which are open if at least one gear is engaged.

Second, more interesting scheme It was also implemented by the author, tested, but I have not installed it in the car yet, I don’t have time yet.

In this scheme, it is completely unnecessary to hold the button (although it is possible); you just need to press it and immediately release it. So, we put the gear in neutral (or press the clutch) - switch S2 closes its contacts and power is supplied to the circuit.

Now, if you briefly press the S1 button, the trigger D.FF1 will work, a logical one will appear at pin 1, the transistor VT1 will open and send the housing to the lower pin of the circuit Rel.1, which will work and, in turn, will supply a plus to the starter solenoid relay ( This diagram also does not show the solenoid relay, only the starter is shown).

The transistor will remain open until the engine starts. As soon as the engine starts, +12V will immediately appear at the generator output, the charging lamp in the dashboard will go out, and the circuit will be de-energized. Transistor T1 will close and de-energize the solenoid relay, which will de-energize the starter.

In the photo there is a KT502 transistor and a relay, which are not in the circuit, I just, just in case, decided to use the second trigger of the microcircuit, because it is there anyway, in case it comes in handy for something.

In conclusion, I will say that the current consumed by the solenoid relay is also quite large, so the output of the switch S1 in the first circuit and S2 in the second must be connected to the ignition switch contact, which, when the key is turned to the “engine start” position, is connected to the contact that goes to the starter retractor relay or with any other, but quite powerful “plus”. That's all, thanks for your attention and good luck in upgrading your cars.

In many recent car models, a button is used to start the engine instead of the usual key. How much better and more convenient it is - everyone determines in accordance with their preferences. The appearance of such a new product has caused many drivers to want to install a push-button engine start on their old cars. Therefore, it would be quite appropriate to consider how the ignition and engine starting system can be redesigned in accordance with new trends.

Why is this necessary?

The reasons can be very diverse:

  • changed (simplified) engine starting process;
  • reducing the number of items in pockets;
  • the desire to stand out and many others.

It is best to leave aside attempts to figure out why such a desire arises and understand how to install a button to start the engine (in further text it may be referred to as Start-Stop Engine or abbreviated SSE).

Engine starting system with a button, options for its implementation

It should be noted right away that there are quite a lot of options for connecting the button. This is due to the fact that such a system can be built taking into account a wide variety of initial conditions. As an example, below are some options for how to install such an element, possible operation algorithms of the Start-Stop Engine and the components used. Which one to choose is up to you. If the level of knowledge of electronics and circuits is high enough, you can make your own based on any of the options, you just need to understand the principle.

How the ignition key can be used:

  1. the key is inserted into the lock, set to position I, and then, after pressing the button, the engine starts (the key allows you to remove the steering wheel lock, which is available on many cars of the VAZ family);
  2. the key is not used at all, got into the car - pressed Start-Stop Engine, and the engine started.
  3. What buttons can be used, their installation, connection diagram:
  4. without locking, in this case it must be pressed and held until the engine starts;
  5. with fixation, pressed and released, the beginning of stable operation of the motor will be detected by the electronics and the starter will be turned off.

How the ignition system works:

  • its start is carried out separately from starting the engine (pressing Start-Stop Engine turns on the ignition, then presses the brake or clutch again and the engine starts);
  • the ignition starts working simultaneously with the engine starting;
  • Various blocking of the Start-Stop Engine and ignition is carried out, including (the blocking scheme may involve the use of a signal from a security alarm, an open door sensor, turning on the dimensions, etc.).

These are just some of the possible options and algorithms that allow you to start the engine without a key in the car lock.

How to make such a launch possible

As an example, several options for implementing such an idea are considered below. It is worth considering that when undertaking such a modernization, you need to understand and understand what and how to do, because you carry out all manipulations at your own peril and risk. If during the work you have doubts about the correctness of the actions, you should seek advice from a specialist (auto electrician).

Scheme of starting an engine from a button using a key

There are a significant number of different options for implementing this approach. For example, the diagram below.

And below is a diagram of connecting the relay to the ignition switch

Everything works extremely simply. The key is inserted into the lock and turned. Then the button is pressed and held until the motor starts. To turn off the entire system, simply turn the key to its original position. With this option, all functions of the ignition switch and immobilizer are retained.

Such a scheme is quite simple and primitive; it can be performed by any car enthusiast. There are much more complex implementation options, but their implementation will require the use of additional elements, and a person trained in the field of electronics can do this.

Installing an engine start button without an ignition key

This is a more complex option that allows you to start the engine using a button; this approach uses, for example, RZPTF (rear fog lamp relay). Its activation is shown in the diagram shown in the figure:

An additional advantage will be connecting power to the alarm system. In this case, the operating algorithm will be as follows:

  1. the car is removed from the alarm system, power is supplied to pin 1 of the RZPTF, and the backlight turns on;
  2. the button is pressed and held - the ignition and starter relays are turned on, the starter begins to spin;
  3. the button is held until the engine starts, then it is released, the starter relay is turned off, the engine continues to run;
  4. pressing again stops the engine;
  5. After setting the car to the alarm system, the backlight goes out.

This is one of the possible ways to implement such a launch system. During such a launch, other elements can be used. For example, the engine will start when you press the clutch or brake, everything will be determined by the specified starting algorithm.

The idea of starting the engine using a button instead of a key is possible on any car. In this case, a completely arbitrary algorithm of action can be used. The decision on how to start the engine - with a button or with the ignition key - is a matter of personal choice and the skill of the person who will undertake the modification of the ignition system.

Nowadays, many foreign automakers equip their cars with a button that starts when pressed. What are the advantages of such a starting system and whether it makes sense to install an engine start button on the engine of your VAZ, we will try to figure it out in this publication. For those car enthusiasts who still want to implement such a system and install a start button on their car, we will tell you about the most accessible and uncomplicated methods for this modification.

How to make a VAZ engine start button yourself

As mentioned above, ways installing the Start Engine button on a VAZ There are many, but there are several nuances that must be taken into account when performing such modifications.

Firstly, there are options for starting the engine from a button with or without a key. Secondly, the engine starts when you press the button once, as well as when you hold it down until the internal combustion engine starts. And thirdly, turning on the ignition can be done with the same engine start button (pressing it once turns on the ignition, pressing and holding the brake pedal a second time starts the engine) and simultaneously turning on the ignition and starter.

Even the most inexperienced auto enthusiast can make and install a primitive VAZ engine start button, but it’s still better to do it Start Engine on a microcontroller with a start delay and timer.

Engine start button paired with ignition key

Before starting this modification, it is worth considering that the cross-section of the button wires must correspond to the cross-section of the wires used in. It is also worth remembering that its design is not particularly intricate, so the design of the engine start button should not be complicated.

The principle of operation of the simplest Start Engine button for a VAZ

  1. Without the ignition key the button does not work
  2. The key must be inserted into the ignition and set to the first position
  3. The engine start button is pressed and held until the power unit is fully started (the button must be locked)
  4. To stop the engine, the ignition key must be turned to position “0”
  5. The button should only work if the ignition key is in position “1”

Instructions for making an engine start button

To implement this modification, you need an ignition relay with a wire block. (4 wires in total, 2 high-current circuits (yellow contacts on the relay itself) and 2 low-current circuits (white contacts).

We throw one of the wires of the high-current circuit onto pin 15 of the ignition switch, and the second into pin 30 of the same lock (in general, one is pink and the other is red).

We throw one of the wires of the low-current circuit to the “-” ground, and the second to the green wire on it “+” appears when the ignition is turned on (done so that without a key the starter does not work by pressing the button) and we interrupt the wire from the relay to the green wire with our button !

If you are a motorist and you are tired of the problems associated with the production of plastic elements of the ignition switch (IS), burns and deformation in the contacts, then we recommend that you find out how to install a function button instead of the ignition switch. It will significantly increase the comfort of ignition control, and will provide an opportunity to once again prove that the stereotype “always carry a key with you” is wrong. A problematic ZZ with its contact group in the car is not at all necessary.

Classic modernization methods

ATTENTION! A completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption has been found! Don't believe me? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also didn’t believe it until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

So, today there are many universal methods for carrying out such modernization.

1st method

One of the simplest classic options is to install a “start stop” button with a key. This is a semi-modernized scheme that has both its advantages and disadvantages.

The fact is that without a key it will be impossible to start the car. First you need to insert it, then set it to the desired position, and only then use the button to start the internal combustion engine. If you need to turn off the engine, the key turns back.

2nd method

Another tuning method completely eliminates the presence of a key. However, the modernization scheme is more complex; you need to acquire a special relay (the relay model that controls the rear fog lights on VAZ cars is suitable).

If the car has an alarm system, then the button illumination can be powered from it, and not from the battery. Thus, it is possible to ensure that the button lights up immediately after the car is disarmed. The “start stop” button will signal to the driver that the internal combustion engine is ready to start.

As for the specific features of this scheme:

  • As soon as the car is disarmed, a voltage of 12 volts appears on the start button (at the same time the LED lights up);
  • When the driver presses the button and holds it down a little, the relay and starter are activated, and the engine starts;
  • After releasing the button, the starter is turned off, the ignition remains in the working position;
  • When the driver presses the button again, the power unit stops;
  • As soon as the car is set to alarm, the voltage is completely removed from the button and the LED goes out.

Important point. When implementing this modernization scheme, which completely eliminates the presence of a key, do not forget about the steering wheel lock. It should be turned off before tuning so that the steering wheel rotates normally.

3-way

The third version of the classic modernization is practically no different from the second, with one small difference. The starter will no longer turn on after pressing the button; only the relay is activated. In order to start the engine, the driver must press one of the pedals (in this case, we connect the brake pedal).

This version of the scheme is typical for most modern foreign cars. And the brake pedal is activated for the sole reason that it has its own sensor. The pedal is depressed and, thereby, the activation of the 5-pin relay is ensured.

Combined rework option (step by step)

The necessary materials for tuning are prepared:

  • Three types of relays: ZPTF, 4- and 5-pin;
  • Several meters of high-quality wiring with a cross-section of more than one millimeter;
  • “Start stop” button;
  • Diode and terminals.

You should be armed with all the tools necessary for a tuner, including pliers, wire cutters, etc.

The modification scheme looks like this.

Everything is carried out according to the diagram, but the diode can be installed in any convenient place.

Ready-made universal kits

The modern market is replete with ready-made universal kits for starting internal combustion engines from a button. They are sold together with protective systems and are suitable for installation in almost all known car models.

Ready-made kits can provide reliable engine starting. Modernization, if carried out correctly, will easily turn the starting system of a domestic car into a universal and functional element, no different from the standard version of the best foreign cars in the world. However, the kits are not cheap, and if you call a specialist, then along with the installation, the new starting system will require quite a large financial investment. If you know how to install the ignition button, you can save money.

Thus, there are several ways to install a button. Each has its own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.

  1. With a key. This ignition option requires a key. An old and proven scheme. Plus - ease of installation, minus - again you need to take the key with you. To start the engine, the driver must press a button.
  2. The same option, only without a key. The advantages are obvious, but the disadvantage is the complex installation scheme.
  3. Short press button. It is enough to just hold the button pressed for a second - this will be enough to crank the starter. The advantage of the scheme: the button only gives the starter a command to activate, it rotates until the internal combustion engine starts.
  4. Long press button. The same thing, only the button is held for a longer period of time. The advantage of the scheme is expressed in the fact that the driver himself controls the rotation of the starter. If he releases the button, the starter will stop rotating.

As was written above, in addition to the classic options for using schemes, there are also combined ones. They are often invented out of the blue by amateurs and craftsmen. Some schemes are so successful that they deserve higher approval.

Start stop button: pros and cons

The button is a small product installed instead of the 3Z or in another part of the car interior. To start the motor, just one finger press is enough. It's simple, convenient and original.

Standard buttons on foreign cars function like this: as soon as the car is disarmed, the driver gets inside, presses the brake pedal and presses the button once. After half a second, the power unit starts. To stop the motor, just press the brake and button again.

Often buttons are equipped with LEDs for ease of use. A glowing indicator lets the driver know that the car was started successfully (on some foreign cars, the level of sound insulation of the body is brought to such a level that you can’t even hear inside the cabin whether the engine is running or not).

Advantages and disadvantages

AdvantagesFlaws
1 A light touch is enough to start the engine.To start the car, you need to sit in it and press the brake pedal. Out of habit, many drivers forget about this
2 No more need to carry the ignition key with youThere may be difficulties when installing an alarm with heating. So, you will need at least two keychains - one of them must be given to the masters. They will disassemble it, take out the chip and install it in the car. Power will only be supplied at startup
3 The button can be installed anywhere, including right at hand, which increases ease of useInstalling an alarm on a car with a button usually costs more
4 A number of options are combined with car alarms, immobilizers and other security systems
5 You can lock the car by simply pressing a button on the door, without having to set it to the alarm - this saves time if you leave the car for a short time

Note. There is an opinion that you won’t be able to get into the car if the battery in the key fob runs out. Actually this is not true. It will be enough to place the key fob on the button side, and if the battery dies, then open the car with the key.

Now you know how to install a button instead of the ignition switch. This can be done with your own hands, saving on the services of expensive specialists.
