Chevrolet Cobalt: shaking out the truth from the new "state employee". Technical characteristics of the Chevrolet Cobalt, reviews from owners and specialists Chevrolet Cobalt chassis

The first generation Chevrolet Cobalt debuted in 2004. This golf car was offered in sedan and coupe body styles only in the American market. The basic version was with a 2.2-liter engine (145 hp), the more powerful version was equipped with a two-liter compressor engine that developed 205 hp. With. In 2006, the Chevrolet Cobalt also began to be equipped with a 2.4-liter power unit with a capacity of 171 hp. With. Subsequently, the engines were modernized and became a little more powerful: the output of the 2.2-liter increased to 155 forces, and the 2.4-liter - to 173 forces. And in 2008, instead of a compressor engine, the car received a 2.0 Turbo engine with a power of 260 hp. With.

Production of the car at a plant in Ohio (USA) ended in 2010, and instead of this model, American buyers began to be offered a “global” one. In total, just over a million Cobalts were produced.

2nd generation, 2011

The second generation Chevrolet Cobalt sedan, produced since 2011, was initially offered only in South America, later it entered the markets of the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe (these cars are equipped with a 1.4-liter engine). Uzbek-assembled cars have been sold in Russia since 2013.

The car is equipped with a 1.5-liter engine producing 105 hp. With. paired with a manual or automatic transmission. Prices for Cobalt in Russia started at 483,000 rubles. At the end of 2015, the model left the Russian market.

In 2016, sedans began to be produced in Uzbekistan under the new name “”, these cars are intended for the Russian market.

By 2011, the Brazilian branch of GM independently developed its own vision of a public sector employee. The project was called Chevrolet Cobalt; the new product, as a concept, was presented in the summer of 2011 in Buenos Aires. By the end of 2011, sales of this sedan began in South America, and in 2012, the “global” Chevrolet Cobalt reached the Russian market.

To avoid confusion, let us immediately clarify that under the Chevrolet brand in the USA a model of the same name was produced in 2004-2010 (GM Delta platform) - using this platform the following were also produced: Opel Astra H (2004-2009), Opel Zafira, Chevrolet HHR...

The second incarnation of the Chevrolet Cobalt uses the old Delta platform – shortened by 4 mm (2620 mm); the manufacturer positions this car as a representative of the European “B” class. The four-door, “South American” sedan is 4479 mm long, 1735 mm wide, 1514 mm high, and with its dimensions is located between the Chevrolet Aveo and Chevrolet Cruze sedans.

The appearance of the Chevrolet Cobalt 2012 model year by Brazilian designers turned out to be original, but rather boring. The front part with large almond-shaped headlights, an immodestly sized false radiator grille, a bumper with an additional air duct and foglight “guns” is designed in the corporate style of the brand. Only the disproportionately large sizes of the headlights and radiator grille introduce some imbalance into the appearance of this car.

The sides of the body with a high belt line (small windows), an almost flat roof, powerful rear pillars, round wheel arches and a lean trunk look bland, without a hitch.

The stamping at the bottom of the doors somewhat dilutes the mood, but its configuration seems to be asking to be protected by a plastic cover. The stern with a huge trunk lid is discordant with the “child-sized” bumper and rear lighting, which is designed in the style of a “Corsa sedan”.

The dimensions of the practical luggage compartment of the Chevrolet Cobalt sedan are 545 liters (leaving the former class record holder, Renault Logan, far behind).

The interior of the second incarnation of the Chevrolet Cobalt sedan in many ways echoes the design of the interior of the Chevrolet Aveo 2012 model year. The same three-spoke steering wheel with a metal-look insert (the steering column is adjustable in four directions), an original motorcycle dashboard, a front dashboard with open shelves for small items. The center console has an attractive and ergonomic configuration and a multimedia system, with convenient control knobs for the heater and air conditioning.

The seats in the Chevrolet Cobalt also migrated from the Aveo, the front ones with a bright anatomical shape and pronounced lateral support not only for the cushion, but also for the back of the chair.

The rear row cushion is molded for two passengers, and there are two headrests; a third person will be uncomfortable. In the second row there is plenty of legroom; passengers of average height will not feel cramped.

The materials used in interior decoration will not be expensive, but of acceptable quality. In addition, the Chevrolet Cobalt II can be equipped with climate control, electric windows, electric and heated mirrors, front airbags, and a CD/MP3 radio.

Specifications. For the Russian and market, the second Chevrolet Cobalt is equipped with a 1.5-liter 105-horsepower gasoline engine. There will be two transmissions for it: a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.

The dynamics of the sedan do not depend on the type of gearbox - in any case, it is 11.7 seconds “to the first hundred”, and the maximum speed is 170 km/h.

But in terms of fuel efficiency, the “mechanics” still wins. Fuel consumption (and the manufacturer recommends 95-grade gasoline) with a manual transmission will be 6.5 liters per 100 km in “mixed” mode (8.4 – “in the city” or 5.3 – “on the highway”), and with an “automatic” fuel consumption will increase to 7.6 liters “on average” (10.4 in the city cycle or 5.9 on the highway).

By the way, the Basilian version of the Chevrolet Cobalt is equipped with 1.4 liter EconoFlex engines. 97 hp when running on gasoline and producing 102 hp. on ethanol (Brazil is the world's largest producer of biofuel). To “help” the engine, a 5-speed manual gearbox is offered. Dynamics to “hundreds” is 11.9 seconds, with a maximum speed of 170 km/h.

The Chevrolet Cobalt is built on a classic suspension for a budget car: independent at the front with MacPherson struts, semi-independent at the rear with a torsion beam.

In general, knowing the characteristics of the suspension, engine power and the gearbox used, it is not difficult to understand how the budget Chevrolet Cobalt will behave on the road. The car is built on the proven Delta platform, a typical representative of which is the Opel Astra H (now discontinued). So, on roads with poor surfaces, the driver and passengers will have to take on all the potholes, joints and road ripples due to the stiff suspension. When driving slowly, the steering will be adequate and body roll will be insignificant. You won’t be able to drive around, the car is not “tuned” to high-speed steering and sudden lane changes. In critical situations, the rear axle may slip into a skid, but the situation should be saved by good and tenacious brakes.
To summarize, we can classify this “Cobalt” as one of the typical representatives of the “budget segment”. The main features of the car: unique design, interesting functional interior, mediocre handling.

The budget Chevrolet Cobalt sedan for the CIS countries is produced in Uzbekistan (at the GM Uzbekistan plant).

Options and prices. In 2015, the Chevrolet Cobalt is offered in two trim levels on the Russian market: LT and LTZ. The cost of a sedan in the basic “LT” configuration (with a 1.5-liter, 105-horsepower engine and 5-speed manual transmission) starts at 571 thousand rubles. And “Cobalt” with the same engine, but with an automatic transmission, is offered at a price of 637 thousand rubles. For a price of 668 thousand rubles, the “top” equipment of the Chevrolet Cobalt will be offered (the equipment additionally includes: ABS, an airbag for the front passenger, fog lights, a CD+USB audio system, rear electric windows and 15″ alloy wheels).

Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact B-class sedan that replaced the inexpensive Chevrolet Lacetti. Naturally, this car belongs to the category of so-called models “for third world countries”, is assembled in Brazil, Colombia and Uzbekistan and is sold in the markets of Asia, South America and... Russia.

Under the body of a rather controversial design are hidden components and assemblies of the second generation Chevrolet Aveo (Sonic). The platform, suspension, and interior trim details are similar to its slightly more expensive “relative” the Cobalt. But the engine of the new product is exclusive - a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine with a power of 105 hp. No other Chevrolet that is sold in the vastness of our homeland has such an engine.

The sedan, and the Cobalt is available only with this body type, turned out to be roomy and very practical. A record trunk size (545 liters), a comfortable interior, decent finishing materials and a six-speed automatic transmission are the main advantages of the Chevrolet Cobalt.

In the basic LT configuration with manual transmission, the car turns out to be almost “naked”, but this made it possible to keep the initial cost at around 444,000 rubles. The top version LTZ does not cost much more - only 530,000 rubles. Reasonable prices and attractive characteristics have already ensured a good level of Chevrolet Cobalt sales in the first quarter of 2013.

Cars are supplied to Russia from Uzbekistan with subassembly in Kaliningrad at the Avtotor plant.

Expert opinion

At the beginning of 2013 in Russia, the inexpensive Chevrolet Lacetti was replaced by the no less affordable Chevrolet Cobalt. The starting price of the new product is only 444 thousand rubles for a car in the LT configuration with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and a five-speed manual transmission.

Naturally, the demand for B-class cars is small: reliability, comfort, capacity, acceptable dynamics and efficiency. No mention of breathtaking dynamics, or modern gadgets such as adaptive lighting, lane keeping assist, start/stop function, active steering, electric sunblinds, etc. there is no question.

Everything that is included in the initial version of the Cobalt is front electric windows, tilt-adjustable steering column, heated rear window and front seats, audio preparation, central locking and an airbag for the driver. And air conditioning, ABS and a passenger airbag are options...

This car is for those who buy it “close to their means” for the sole purpose of driving a lot and transporting from point A to point B. Cobalt is a tool!

The first generation model was produced in the USA from 2004 to 2010. This car of the first Cobalt series was on the Delta platform. The car had two bodies: a sedan and a coupe.

As for, it was equipped with a range of turbine and naturally aspirated engines with a volume of 2.0 to 2.5 liters. The modern Cobalt can rightfully be considered a second-generation car, and this is because it changed its platform and moved into another class.

Second generation, since 2011

The first generation car was a little larger and was considered a compact in the USA and corresponded to the C-Class in Europe, but against all odds the second generation car went into the B segment and began to show itself as an affordable and simple car for well-developing countries. Thanks to this, we can draw a simple conclusion - the GM concern gave the name to another car. In general, the Chevrolet Cobalt was built only for Brazilian roads, but now it is assembled in Uzbekistan, and assembled in Uzbekistan, it has become more adapted to the roads of the CIS.

They are made in Uzbekistan in Asaka. The process takes place at the highest level, where a minimum of manual operations is performed and at each stage a multi-level quality check of any component of the car is welcomed. The GM enterprise is considered part of a global system.

Assembly production from the GM auto plant is carried out in Asaka.

This year, the company's lineup will be replaced by the budget Lacetti sedan Cobalt from the Chevrolet brand. Cobalt was introduced in 2011, and was developed by the Brazilian company General Motors for all countries of the world. The basis of the sedan was covered by the global Gamma II platform. Many cars have been built on this platform, such as the current Aveo, Chevrolet Tracker, Spark and many others.

Comparison of Chevrolet AVEO and Chevrolet Cobalt

A lot of people think about the question - why is Cobalt needed if the Chevrolet AVEO sedan was already built? The answer to the question was asked from GM itself, and it says that these two different cars have different buyers.

Chevrolet AVEO differs from Chevrolet Cobalt in that the price of AVEO is 20,000 rubles more expensive. Another important difference is the practicality of the cars. AVEO is preferred for the “smart city dweller,” while the Cobalt is only aimed at families who need a car that is inexpensive, practical, with low ground clearance, a comfortable interior, trunk, and most importantly, durable.

Safety

As for the safety system, there is no side airbags, even for an extra charge, but front airbags are built in of very reliable quality, which operate in a split second.

Electronics

The basic equipment includes 4 speakers and audio preparation for the LTZ package. There is also a built-in radio that reads audio recordings only using external audio media. For Cobalt there is no MyLink multimedia system with touchscreen. The most important drawback is the lack of cruise control.

Capacity

If we talk about trunk capacity, the Cobalt is considered the most voluminous in its class only after the future Skoda Rapid. For Cobalt the volume is 545 liters, and for Skoda Rapid – 550 liters. In terms of its dimensions, the Chevrolet Cobalt is significantly larger than the Chevrolet Aveo. In terms of body dimensions, they are almost identical, but in terms of body length, the Cobalt is 80 mm longer, so the body length is 4479 mm. The wheelbase of the Chevrolet Cobalt is 95 mm longer and amounts to 2620 mm. Based on all the above parameters, we can conclude that the interior of the Chevrolet Cobalt is as spacious and comfortable as possible.

For a person of average height 180 cm, it will not be difficult or particularly problematic during a long trip thanks to the high ceiling in the cabin and the distance from the back to the knees. The seat position is surprisingly very high and not tilted down. The bottom cushion provides very good thigh support. If three people fit in the rear seats, then only the average person will experience slight discomfort due to the high central tunnel.

Interior

The rear doors are equipped with wide and comfortable armrests, but their main drawback is that using the window lifters is very inconvenient, that is, when using it you need to twist your arm.

As for the interior equipment, there is a lack of a roof light, storage pockets in the rear doors and cup holders. This is due to the fact that the car is considered a budget option. There is some inconvenience to the “push-out” backrest profile, which will take some getting used to. This profile is made in a push-out form in order to support the lower back and at the same time it is not possible to lean your head back on the headrest, because you need to bend back.

The seats are treated with a light finish, so you will have to clean the interior.

The Chevrolet Cobalt has good adjustment of the instrument scale, namely, there is a backlight for the speedometer and tachometer panels, unlike the Chevrolet Aveo. There is a built-in digital speedometer, which is very clear and convenient during a trip, but the tachometer, on the contrary, is very difficult to read.

Engine

It runs very quietly, and at the same time pulls very well and without interruptions, and it is designed only for quiet driving. Installed six-speed automatic transmission. When driving at a speed of 100 km/h, the engine produces about 2000 rpm.

This car is known to those who are interested in economy class cars. Initially, the car was developed by American specialists as a vehicle intended for those who do not want to spend extra money, but at the same time want to move comfortably. The car turned out to be quite modest, but representative. Safety here is at a high level, and the technical characteristics are quite good.

The first generation cobalt is very different from the one that is sold in Russia now.

The first generation of Cobalt appeared in 2004 and was produced until 2010.

The car was built on the Delta platform, and therefore it turned out to be quite small, which determined its popularity among consumers. Fans could choose one of two body types – sedan and coupe. The engines were petrol, with a volume of 2.0 and 2.5 liters.

In Russia

At the Cobalt presentation!

Those cars that are currently driving on domestic roads are considered to be the second generation.

They are built on an innovative platform and have changed their class a little to the higher side. Previously, such a car belonged to class “C”, but now it has become class “B”. The tool is positioned as simple and accessible to everyone.

Assembly location

Chevrolet plant in Osaka.

The first generation of the car was not only not assembled in our country, but was not even delivered here.

The second series, although not made in domestic factories, is available to the average user from the Russian Federation. The car initially collected in Brazil, and then started in Uzbekistan . The same plant also produces Deo cars.

There the full assembly cycle takes place - from welding the base to running in and testing the car. This company is the official representative office of General Motors in Asaka. The car is completely adapted to domestic conditions of use at the factory. There is a minimum of manual labor involved. The entire process is automated. The quality of the car meets international standards.

In terms of its characteristics, Cobalt is similar to Lacetti, but they differ in the basis and cost.

The latter transport is more expensive. Cobalt turns out to be a car that is intended for an ordinary family, is inexpensive, durable and spacious. Aveo is more suitable for those who mainly move around the city.

Features and Disadvantages

The salon is moderately ascetic and comfortable.

If we talk about the features of the Cobalt, it does not have airbags even in the optional configuration. The car also has its drawbacks.

These include:

  1. Tight seat adjustment.
  2. Incorrect and poor placement of rear-view mirrors, and therefore the driver has difficulty seeing what is happening behind the car.
  3. Stiff suspension.
  4. Small fuel tank. Total 46 liters.
  5. The gearbox is not improved, and therefore the control in manual mode is poor.

The basic configuration of a car designed for domestic roads includes good audio system with speakers . But there is no touch screen with which you can control the car’s systems, and there is also no cruise control.

Trunk

The luggage compartment is huge!

At the same time, the luggage compartment is quite spacious. Its volume is 545 liters Body length is 4479 mm, and the wheelbase is 2620 mm. It turns out the interior is quite spacious and free.

Other characteristics

There should be enough space in front even for the “biggest” driver.

It will be comfortable for a tall driver and passenger to sit in the front, even during long journeys. The ceiling is high and there is enough legroom. Three large people in the back will be uncomfortable. The rear door openings are wide. There is no ceiling light in the cabin and there is no space for small items. The upholstery of the chairs is light, and therefore they will have to be washed or covered often.

The instrument scale is informative. For domestic users there is a separate provision illumination of tachometer, console and speedometer . The speedometer is digital and therefore clearly visible.

Engine

Under the hood.

The motor runs quietly. After long-term operation, the unit will not malfunction. It is designed for calm movement, without jerking. The engine is powered by a 6-speed gearbox. Machine. At a hundred kilometers the tachometer will show 2 thousand revolutions. For a budget car, these figures are quite good.

Cost of Chevrolet Cobalt for Russia

The cost of such a car, which is assembled in Uzbekistan and intended for the domestic market, is about 450,000 rubles. For such a car, the amount is considered acceptable. Another advantage of the model is that it is assembled in Uzbekistan.
