Reviews from Mitsubishi Pajero I owners

Mitsubishi Pajero I, 1983

If you treat technology correctly and with love, then the “cart” will become a helicopter. Only after 5 years of operation of the Mitsubishi Pajero I, the “dead” engine and body were overhauled, ball joints, front axle axle boots and tie rod ends were replaced. Also, the spring bushings were replaced with “Nivovskie” cut silent blocks, I note that no one had done all this before me, hence the conclusion that in 24 years the car was overhauled only once, and this is “super reliability”. Mitsubishi Pajero I, although an outdated car, suits me in everything. This is my “weekend” car, so to speak. I love going fishing on it.

Advantages : excellent maneuverability, enviable maintainability, long service life and the availability of original spare parts, which, by the way, are quite inexpensive.

Flaws : If it weren’t for our diesel fuel, we wouldn’t have boosted the economies of foreign countries through the purchase of spare parts for our cars.

Mitsubishi Pajero I, 1987

About the car: Mitsubishi Pajero I, 1987, 2.5 TD (turbine removed), 4 automatic transmissions, 350 thousand miles. Exterior: in general, everything is solid and strict (minimalism, nothing superfluous). Looks like a Mercedes cube (G-class). The aerodynamics are “lame”, which is why there is a whistle in the A-pillars. In general, in such a “tank,” as one of my friends put it, there’s no shame in driving it to a showdown. For hunting, fishing and active outdoor trips - generally super. The spare wheel on the tailgate adds to the already serious look. Interior: everything is done with Chelyabinsk severity. The instrument panel is “iron”. Everything is screwed tightly, there will be no creak, even if you really want to. In the center there is a compass, a body roll meter and a battery charging sensor.

The car is very reliable (if everything is changed, lubricated and checked on time), made for uncompromising use in off-road conditions. Mitsubishi Pajero I is a real jeep, with a forced connection of the front end, a raised and lowered row of transfer cases. Off-road performance is excellent. “Diesel” and ground clearance allow you not to be afraid of almost any puddles, edges and sand. Somehow I even had the opportunity to pull a UAZ out of sand. With the turbine removed, and even with the automatic transmission, the dynamics, frankly speaking, are useless. And the consumption is noticeably higher. So I still advise you not to remove the turbine, pour good oil and not turn off the car immediately after stopping (let the turbine blades cool - it will last longer). Cruising speed on the highway is 100.

Advantages : tank, cheap to maintain.

Flaws : not enough comfort and dynamics.

Mitsubishi Pajero I, 1986

Great city jeep. I have a 3-door. The high seating position of the Mitsubishi Pajero I provides good visibility. Small and economical diesel engine 10-12 l/100 km in the city, powerful - 103 hp. A dynamic jeep that will satisfy many fans of “street racing”. Its not large size (compared to American giants) allows you to always find a gap in city traffic jams and not waste your time, a jeep - you can drive onto the curb. The Mitsubishi Pajero I performed well in off-road conditions - the transfer case has four positions and, in the most extreme conditions, will lock all possible differentials and take you out of the mud in a low gear. The automatic transmission provides comfort and is suitable for novice motorists. Comfortable - spacious interior, four people feel great on long trips, as well as air conditioning, CD radio, full power accessories, height-adjustable seats. Large trunk door - you can put in a refrigerator.

Advantages : economical SUV. Comfortable and safe.

Flaws : not found.

The dignified, unprecedentedly solid appearance of the car attracts attention both in a large metropolis and on country roads. The unique design of the radiator grille, the confident lines of the front bumper, expressive head optics, and exquisite 18-inch wheels (available in the Ultimate version) define the original exterior. The front protection and stylish black roof rails not only demonstrate high practicality and functionality, but are also striking design elements.

Interior

Only high-quality finishing materials are used in the interior design of the Pajero 4, which ensures a high level of respectability and comfort. Maximum concentration of the driver's attention on driving is achieved through the ergonomic organization of the interior. The presence of excellent visibility, anatomical seats, height adjustment of the steering column, convenient placement of the media system control button on the steering wheel, retractable boxes, and an informative dashboard guarantees increased driving safety and allows the driver to feel confident in any situation.

The spaciousness of the interior and the perfect organization of storage systems in these cars make them especially convenient both for long trips and for transporting long cargo. When the seats are folded down, the car interior can be used as a comfortable sleeping area.

Body-integrated frame

The developers of Mitsubishi Pajero managed to completely refute the stereotype associated with the competition between driving characteristics and cross-country ability. The particularly robust body structure, equipped with an integrated space frame, sets unprecedented rigidity parameters and determines impeccable performance characteristics.

The manufacturer equipped the car with an independent innovative suspension that provides exceptional cross-country ability with a level of comfort for passengers that is comparable to the comfort provided by premium class sedans. Corrosion-resistant steel panels give the structure special reliability and durability. The use of aluminum alloy made it possible to minimize the weight of the vehicle

Engine

In order to conquer the most difficult and difficult trails, the developers of Pajero 4 have created a line of efficient engines to obtain optimal power levels.

SUPER SELECT 4WD all-wheel drive transmission

The manufacturer equips the legendary Mitsubishi Pajero cars with a unique SUPER SELECT 4WD transmission. It allows you to switch to all-wheel drive mode while moving on slippery surfaces at speeds reaching 100 km/h. The center differential is locked when driving on off-road, sand, or viscous clay in order to increase traction and distribute power evenly to each axle. Maximum cross-country ability, overcoming heavily polluted areas and steep slopes are provided through the use of a reduction gear with a double increase in torque in each gear.

The rear cross-axle differential is locked forcibly by using the “RD LOCK” button located on the front panel. If the rear differential is locked, the ABS and ASTC systems are automatically switched off.

Rear wheel drive 2H

This mode is especially ideal when driving within the city or on the highway. In this mode, power is transferred only to the rear axle, ensuring fast and quiet running and low fuel consumption.

All wheel drive 4H

In this mode, power is distributed to each of the axles, which is characterized by a lack of symmetry (a ratio from 33/67 to 50/50 is achieved). Such a technical solution is the key to perfect grip on the road, exceptional comfort and safety while driving. Using 4H all-wheel drive is a smart solution for towing trailers and driving in adverse weather and climatic conditions. The manufacturer does not set any restrictions on speed or type of coverage for this mode.

All-wheel drive mode with center differential lock 4HLc

This mode provides excellent handling by evenly distributing power to each wheel. It is optimal for off-road driving and is not recommended for trails with high traction.

All-wheel drive mode with reduction gear and locking center and cross-axle differentials 4LLc

This mode, provided in Mitsubishi Pajero cars, allows you to overcome the most difficult obstacles by transmitting maximum torque at extremely low speeds. The mode is not recommended for tracks with good grip.

The first Pajero had not yet become the chic car with a certain gangster charisma that it was, but it was the first model that showed the entire world community how reliable, indestructible and passable an SUV from Mitsubishi can be. So already in 1985, just 3 years after the launch of the off-road Mitsubishi into series, Pajero among the Marathon class cars came second to the Dakar finish. This was a class of practically production cars, imagine how reliable a car had to be in order not only to pass all the incredibly difficult tests of the Dakar, but also to do it better than most other cars. After this resounding success, the Mitsubishi team moved to the most prestigious Prototype class, in which SUVs won the Dakar 12 times.

Today, brand new Pajero can be seen on the avenues of large cities, near restaurants and expensive stores. Since the time of the second generation, despite its excellent off-road capabilities, Pajero has moved into the category of luxury, and perhaps even fashion, cars, the task of which is not only to provide the highest level of comfort for the driver and passengers, but also to emit a certain overwhelming aura on the neighbors. traffic flow. In general, in the eyes of most drivers, the new Mitsubishi Pajero is really cool.

Not everyone has the money for an expensive new SUV, yes and some wealthy people prefer not to show off their wealth, but at the same time, some of them would like to acquire a relatively inexpensive car with excellent cross-country ability. Of course, you can buy a Niva or UAZ, but for $5,000 you can become the owner of a well-maintained Mitsubishi Pajero 1. This time, the Internet portal will discuss the Pajero of the 1982-1991 model, and will pay attention to its technical characteristics and features.

Initially, the Pajero 1982 was produced in a short-wheelbase, three-door body, which again confirms the off-road orientation of this car. Even the very name of this car was borrowed from the predatory South American cat - Leopardous Pajeros, and not from some domestic cat that lounges on the owner's sofa. The production of the five-door began in 1985, while the long Pajero was produced with three roof options: regular, semi-high and high. The three-door was also available with a removable soft top, such modifications were called Canvas Top. The five-door with a body length of 4,650 mm had a wheelbase of 2695 mm, it is noteworthy that with a body width of 1,680 mm, the height is 1850 mm. The first Mitsubishi SUVs were equipped with 15-size, 215-width tires. Of course, this Japanese all-terrain vehicle has a frame body; there was still a lot of time left before the general transition of SUVs to load-bearing bodies. The spare wheel is attached to the rear door - this gives the all-terrain vehicle a certain spirit of adventure.

Since 1987, the front seats began to be equipped with heating, and the Elite version, which appeared in 1990, can be recognized by the sunroof and walnut inserts. The handle located in front of the front passenger, as well as the device that determines the roll of the car, indicates that you are sitting in a real SUV. Five-door Pajero could have nine seats - such cars were often used by representatives of UN missions.

Technical Specifications Mitsubishi Pajero1, 1982 - 1991

The four-cylinder petrol unit 4G54 with a volume of 2.6 liters develops only 103 hp, the two-liter “turbo-four” 4G63T with 145 hp has more power, but the most expensive and prestigious Mitsubishi Pajero was equipped with an atmospheric V6 6G72 with a volume of 3.0 liters, a power of 141 hp and thrust of 225 N.M.

The least powerful diesel 4D55 is not equipped with supercharging and, with a volume of 2.3 liters, develops a not very impressive 75 hp. Turbocharged modifications of this unit develop: 84 and 94 hp of power, thrust of 174 N.M - (this is exactly the torque of the first engine), enough for leisurely driving around the city, but of course 235 N.M of the 94-horsepower engine pushes the car forward in a more interesting way .

It is noteworthy that Pajero became the first production SUV to have ventilated disc brakes installed on the front wheels. The front suspension of the Japanese jeep is torsion bar, independent; The rear is dependent - spring. The Pajero is equipped with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. Of course, at that time it would have been impossible to achieve the status of a full-fledged SUV without a low range of gears and locking, and the Pajero has all this.

Price Mitsubishi Pajero 1, 1982 - 1988

You can buy a Mitsubishi Pajero 1 today for $3,000. This is the price of a car in no better condition. The price of an already made Mitsubishi Pajero 1 is unlikely to drop below $4,500; to buy a decent copy, it is advisable to have an amount of $5,000, or even $5,500.

By the standards of even old SUVs, the price of Pajero 1 is not high; to buy such an all-terrain vehicle you won’t have to go into loans and debts; you can collect this amount anyway. Even if the old Pajero lacks coolness and prestige, it is capable of a lot off-road, especially if we are talking about a three-door modification.

Produced since 1982, the Japanese SUV Pajero combines the characteristics of a real all-terrain vehicle and a quiet urban crossover. He is considered a legend in his class. Excellent functionality and pleasant appearance have always attracted the eyes of car enthusiasts to this masterpiece of the automotive industry. The history of the SUV has constantly evolved, so the technical characteristics of the Mitsubishi Pajero will be extremely interesting to consider.

“Pajero” in translation means a wild cat with a persistent character and colossal endurance, living in the vastness of Patagonia, which is located in the southern part of Argentina.However, this name is not used everywhere. In Spanish-speaking countries, the SUV is called "Montero", in the UK - "Shogan", in the USA - Dodge Raider.

Pajero first appeared on camera in 1973, when it was presented at an exhibition in Tokyo. It was just a concept car with a lot of similarities to Jeep.

Almost 8-plus years of waiting and testing of two prototypes convinced Mitsubishi to release a complete analogue of the SUV. The first generation was introduced in 1981, and a significantly improved version became publicly available the following year. Therefore, many sources mark the official start of the release of the cult series as 1982.

At first, SUVs were produced only with a three-door body, a short wheelbase and with two roof options (cast metal and folding).

The range of engines included:

  • four-cylinder gasoline engines of 2 and 2.6 liters;
  • diesel 2.3-liter unit;
  • turbodiesel 2.3-liter engine.

These engines became the basis for the Pajero, and the 6G72 turned out to be so reliable that it is still used in modifications intended for the markets of Japan and a number of countries in the Middle East.

January 1983 marked the debut of the Pajero in the Paris-Dakar rally. At first, the SUV could not compete for the leading positions, but after a number of upgrades the first trophy was taken (1985). Pajero became so good that it went to conquer the markets of Europe and the USA.

In particular, the following fundamental changes were made:

  • a new version with five doors and a significantly longer wheelbase appeared - in 1983;
  • The engines underwent major modifications - 1984;
  • The SUV's wheels are equipped with disc brakes instead of drum brakes.

In 1987, the body was covered with better paint, the front seats were heated, and the alloy wheels were increased to 15 inches.

Significant events:

  • 1983 - a 9-seater version with a high roof and armored body parts was released (the UN's favorite car);
  • 1988 - the 2.5-liter 4D56T turbodiesel unit was released;
  • 1990 - the legendary 3.0-liter 6G72 gasoline unit was created;

Together with innovative design solutions (powerful engines, independent front suspension, electric drives), Pajero 1 became a bestseller. It was also warmly received in the foreign market.

Second generation 1991-1999

In 1991, Pajero II was released. The emergence of a strong competitor has shaken up the SUV market. The reason for this was a fundamentally new transmission concept - Super Select 4WD. This system, which controlled the distribution of force between the wheels, opened up new horizons.

The concept of an SUV was largely laid down in the first generation. Then the car simply improved and adapted to car fashion trends. At the peak of the glory of the first generation, it was replaced by the second, which was an excellent marketing ploy.

The body has increased significantly in size. In addition, Pajero 2 received four different versions:

  • hardtop;
  • folding roof;
  • divided into sections;
  • cast.

Pajero II was equipped with a third row of seats, adjustable shock absorbers (and the adjustment was made directly from the pilot’s cabin), a winch under the bumper and a hydraulic lift system to change the ground clearance.

After 1991, the SUV developed rapidly:

  • engines have been modernized;
  • ABS was introduced;
  • a choice of rear axle is provided: LCD or with forced locking;
  • The second row of seats has been improved.

Also appeared: a central door locking system, an immobilizer, and a power sunroof.

The engine base has been replenished with a 3-liter 12-valve engine with electronic fuel distribution and a 2.5-liter turbodiesel. And in 1993, a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated and a 2.8-liter turbodiesel appeared - both with electronic control.

The second generation was restyled in 1997. Unexpectedly, in 1999, production of Pajero II was discontinued.

The Chinese concern CHANGFENG MOTOR received the right to produce this model. Now the off-road veteran is known as Liebao Leopard, which means "wild cat".

Third generation 1999-2006

In 1999, the third generation was released. Almost every detail of the SUV has been redesigned. New engines were created:

  • petrol 6G74 GDI 3.5 l;
  • petrol 6G75 with a volume of 3.8 liters;
  • diesel engine 4M41 with a volume of 3.2 liters.

Although the engine base was slightly affected, the electronic equipment was given an innovative shake-up.

The axles on the Pajero III have been removed. The frame was integrated into the body, the wheels were equipped with separate drives, and the suspension was made independent. Compared to previous models, the SUV has become much more comfortable and convenient, and cross-country ability has been improved by refining the Super Select II transmission.

The appearance of the third generation of Pajero was marked by a significant redesign of the early models:

  • improved handling by shifting the center of gravity to the rear axle;
  • improved aerodynamics due to the creation of a new body shape;
  • The suspension has been strengthened due to the removal of a reinforced frame.

The all-wheel drive system received a new distribution of torque along the axles in a ratio of 33/67 (advantage to the rear axle). If necessary, the electronics could make the distribution equal between the axes.

Fourth generation

The latest generation was introduced in 2006. Significant modernizations affecting it:

  • improving the level of security;
  • new interior design and interior;
  • maximum electronization of vehicle systems;
  • improvement of the suspension.

The engine base of the new SUVs is represented by the following models:

  • 3.2-liter – diesel, 167 l. With;
  • 3.8-liter gasoline engine, 247 hp. With;
  • 3.0-liter V-6 from the previous generation (mainly for the domestic market).

In general, the fourth generation was a logical continuation of the third. Its separation into a new branch of development occurred due to the use of more innovative technologies in the creation of an SUV.

Should we expect the release of the new Pajero?

Many fans of the series are interested in the question: will there be a fifth generation Pajero? With a high degree of probability, Mitsubishi will still release it. Concept cars have already been presented, and it would not be very reasonable to expect new restylings of the 4th generation. The concern has not openly announced the release of Pajero 5, but many factors indicate that this will happen in the coming years.

According to various sources, we managed to find out that the fifth generation Mitsubishi Pajero will have:

  • hybrid and more powerful engines;
  • increased level of comfort when driving and operating in general;
  • modified all-wheel drive system;
  • the maximum possible electronicization of all components of the SUV;
  • improved cross-country ability;
  • more economical and environmentally friendly fuel combustion system.

SUV prices today

In conclusion, it would not be amiss to consider the price range of the Mitsubishi Pajero on the Russian market. Naturally, like any other car, this SUV can be purchased either new or used.

Depending on the condition and generation, the cost of Pajero varies. On average, prices for an SUV in 2019 are as follows:

  • first generation - from 200-250 thousand rubles;
  • second generation - from 250-300 thousand rubles and from 400-500 thousand rubles for restyled models after 1997;
  • third generation - from 500-700 thousand rubles;
  • fourth generation - from 900 thousand rubles.

This jeep is an amazing example of survivability. It does not become obsolete, it is needed. Against the backdrop of the fact that today the main competitors, such as Land Rover, Toyota Highlander or Nissan Pathfinder, are gradually degenerating, Pajero proudly bears the names “brutal”, “butch”, “truly masculine”. The fact that Pajero has won the prestigious Dakar off-road race 12 times speaks for itself. He began his career as an athlete immediately after his release (in 1985). Much of the rally technology was transferred to civilian models.

Sales market: Japan. Right hand drive

Before the appearance of this model, the Mitsubishi concern was engaged in the licensed production of SUVs under the Jeep brand under an American license, but in 1976, at the Tokyo Motor Show, the Mitsubishi Jeep Pajero concept car was presented to the public, which embodied a new 4WD concept that brought it closer to passenger cars. And in 1982, mass production of the model began, which became the flagship of the company’s lineup. Due to the fact that the model was constantly improved, acquiring more and more luxury, it gained enormous popularity. In 1983, Pajero began taking part in the Paris-Dakar rally and from that moment on became one of the most popular cars in the world. Demonstrating its superiority over its classmates, Pajero instantly soared up the world automobile rankings. The name of the car comes from the name of a wild cat that lives in Argentina, or more precisely, in Patagonia.

The Van modification with a short body was the first to debut in 1982. This car was equipped with diesel turbine and naturally aspirated engines, was produced in versions with a standard, semi-high and high roof and had Canvas Top and Metal Roof modifications. A year later, the Wagon modification (with a body in F-segment dimensions) went on sale. In addition, a Pajero Estate modification with a long body was added to the lineup. In 1989, the “Pajero Super” was launched into the series, which differed from the basic version in a seven-seater interior, walnut instrument panel and door trim, and body paint. The most expensive modification was the “3.0 Super Exceed”, which had a sunroof, cruise control, power accessories, dual air conditioning, electric seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and other options that distinguished the top version.

The main power unit for the Pajero is a 4-cylinder 2.5-liter diesel engine 4D56 (SOHC), which, depending on the modification (aspirated or turbocharged), has a power of 85 or 94 hp. At the same time, the turbocharged version has a higher torque, reaching a value of 226 Nm at 2000 rpm, while for the naturally aspirated version this parameter is 196 Nm. In top trim levels, a 3-liter V-shaped 6-cylinder gasoline engine 6G72 (SOHC) was used, distinguished by the presence of an ECI-MULTI injection system and a relatively low “revolution”, developing a maximum power of 150 hp. at 5000 rpm, but the torque reached its value of 231 Nm at only 2500 rpm. Fuel consumption with it is 13.7 liters “per hundred” in mixed mode. Different versions also had different fuel tank volumes: 60 or 90 liters.

The first generation of the Mitsubishi Pajero SUV had a fairly progressive front suspension design - independent torsion bar, thanks to which the habits of the “wild cat” differed for the better, for example, in such a parameter as geometric cross-country ability, which is very important for an SUV. In addition, the front independent suspension significantly increased the smoothness of the ride. The car has a Part-Time all-wheel drive transmission - a disengaged front axle without a center differential, so you cannot constantly drive in all-wheel drive.

Over the ten years of its existence, Pajero I has not undergone significant changes in terms of safety systems and features. The standard set included only three-point belts, and even then in later versions of expensive trim levels, and, of course, by modern standards the safety level of the Mitsubishi Pajero is low. In crash tests, first-generation cars also could not boast of high results, but this applies equally to all SUVs of those years.

The first generation Mitsubishi Pajero turned out to be a very successful model and, in some respects, was far ahead of the competitors of its time. Today, these cars, of course, are hopelessly outdated, but thanks to the presence of the frame, high quality production and generally high reliability, many copies are still in successful use.
