Owner reviews

Review by Mikhail, Mitsubishi ASX, St. Petersburg

I have been using this car for three years. And I don’t feel particularly happy about this. For three years, I drove most of the time on dirt roads, and drove very little around the city. I even used the car on long trips, my family went to the sea and back. About the Mitsubishi ACX, many owner reviews always state that the disadvantages are poor sound insulation. I probably agree with this. The car engine is of course very reliable. However, at speeds of more than two and a half thousand, you have to turn up the radio and speak in a full voice so that passengers can hear. Mitsubishi ASX is ideal for light off-road and asphalt. But dynamic driving in the ACX is not for those with good hearing and a sense of beauty. And if in summer the handling is excellent even on light off-road conditions, then in winter everything is completely bad. It was in winter that this vehicle showed itself in all its glory. The first gear is short, you immediately have to shift to second with a slight shift in the throttle so that the car pulls up. Sometimes it’s even scary to drive on the road. Even the smallest snow drifts tear the car down and pull it to the side of the road. I can definitely say that this unit is not for beginners.
Once I even tried to turn around in winter in a narrow area covered with snow about 5 centimeters high. I felt like an excellent driver and seemed to know the car well. But it only seemed. Still, I got one, albeit not a big, dent on my butt. It is problematic to pass each other in the yard and even more difficult to drive up a small hill. But it grinds just wonderfully. In general, those who want to test the endurance of their nervous system and practice their driving skills can safely buy a Mitsubishi ASX. I don’t even want to talk about winter outdoor trips. I suffered terribly during this time. Finally sold it.

Review by Alexandra, Mitsubishi ASX, Samara
I bought the car, one might say, by accident. I urgently needed a vehicle, so for that kind of money I didn’t even expect anything good. Of course I really like it. Aggressive and sporty body lines, headlights, etc. However, according to owner reviews of the Mitsubishi ASX, I read the disadvantages only after the purchase. And only after two years of use I realized that I completely agree with most of them. The only good thing is that the car has low gas mileage, just what I needed. However, everything else is a little tight. For example, a vehicle accelerates very slowly on a highway. Sometimes you even have to trail behind the truck. Very annoying, especially when I'm in a hurry. Very small trunk. I often go to nature, dachas, barbecues. So, very few things fit in the trunk. I have to put the rest in the back seat. And this is good if there are no passengers. I weigh 90 kilograms and in two years I saw that the driver’s seat was sagging. All savings on low gasoline consumption are more than offset by expensive components. This is my fourth car and in this time I have never spent so much money on maintenance.
It skids terribly on a slippery road. No winter tires can save you, although I approach their choice with great responsibility. That’s why I don’t take my child in the car at all in winter. And yet, the brakes are constantly squeaking. Although, probably only my car has this problem. The second maintenance was done, but they couldn't fix the brakes. In general, if I had chosen at that time, I would naturally have chosen a better brand and model.

Review by Sergey, Mitsubishi ASX, Krasnodar
Having read many owner reviews about the Mitsubishi ASX, I was very surprised that there were more advantages than disadvantages. To be honest, when I bought a new car from a dealership, I was completely confident that there would be no serious problems with it for about a couple of years. But Mitsubishi ASX showed its shortcomings within six months. The car was parked in a garage outside the city. There was a small snowstorm, the motor failed, and the wipers did not work. On the road on a busy highway, the antifreeze froze. As a result, I ended up on a big road in winter with such a ridiculous malfunction. In addition, everything that was under the hood was covered with snow. I was simply shocked. I called the dealers for advice, in the end they don’t know anything and no one except me opens the hood. I fixed the wipers, but now they only work every other time, as if depending on my mood. The officials replaced them for free.
I also encountered that the “engine” icon came on on the control panel. Dealers fixed the problem. As soon as I left them, the signal came on again. I came back, ran diagnostics, and so on all the time. They have already begun to recognize my Mitsubishi ASX from afar. Another annoying thing is that the side mirrors and rear view mirror distort the picture.
The only advantages I can mention are the good power steering, the steering wheel is light and obedient. The driver has a high seating position, a very comfortable seat, and the back does not get tired on long trips.

Review by Nikolay, Mitsubishi ASX, Perm
Mitsubishi ASX is very unreliable. I completely agree with the owners' reviews about all the shortcomings and disadvantages of Mitsubishi ACX. I had a lot of choice. But at that time I was more attracted by the muscular appearance and ground clearance of 19 centimeters. The Mitsubishi company also specializes in the production of SUVs. Such arguments seemed strong to me at that time, and now I have an ass. Extraneous noise from the power unit appeared after 3000 km. I arrived at the service center. They replaced the generator there under warranty. Now it is the old model with a bypass coupling. It turns out that to save money, the Japanese make it with a direct drive. Therefore, the belt slips and causes various noise and vibration. Now a strange noise is heard, which initially appeared as a loud cracking noise when pressing the gas pedal while driving. At first the sound resembled the knocking of valves. Over time, this sound intensified. And it knocks like a bucket of nails. But now not only when you press the gas pedal while moving, but also when you start moving at the start, and sometimes even while driving. We can’t determine the patterns of noise occurrence. I'm already exhausted. I hardly ever drive it. Only to the service station and back. True, they treat my problem with understanding and fuss around, trying to find the cause of the problem. This is perhaps the only advantage of buying this bucket. During long inspections, it was revealed that gasoline does not affect the terrible sounds in any way, the candles are all normal. Diagnostics of the power unit does not show anything even with knocks. I very much doubt that Mitsubishi representatives will confirm their advertising slogan “reliable”. I've been struggling with this problem for a very long time. These knocks are so annoying that now I'm driving a different car. This is how we fix it little by little.

Review by Maxim, Mitsubishi ASX
The Mitsubishi ASX is not only unreliable, it is also uncomfortable. I regretted my purchase many times. The only thing that attracts many buyers is the appearance of Mitsubishi cars. Also, the price for some models, including ACX, is acceptable for many. But don't be fooled, you won't find a good car at a low price. And its ground clearance is really comfortable. When parking, I can drive onto the curb if necessary. But this is the only advantage. It’s better to save up and buy a more worthy and reliable vehicle.
The car is very clumsy. The manufacturer promised that the Mitsubishi ASX is perfect for urban conditions. But this is far from true. Very poor finish. There are already minor scratches and abrasions everywhere. Driving in such a cabin is unpleasant and uncomfortable. Terrible seats. Sometimes there seems to be a plastic mesh underneath the fabric. I just want to cut it open and see what they put into this model. The thresholds are very scratched. Solaris is much better in this regard. I sit in it very carefully, so again it’s uncomfortable.
Unreasonably expensive components. I would like to highlight this point separately. They seem to be new, but they break down after a short time. For example, a black frame for the radiator grille costs twelve thousand. This is what I paid so much money for!?
The windshield blows into the front passenger's eyes. And this is regardless of the height of the passenger. Well, it’s like there’s no trunk at all. Well, that's unthinkable. How can such a big car have such a small trunk? Nothing fits there at all. The metal tongue of the belt cut the body pillars. Notches have formed in the plastic in the place where the front seat seat belts are installed. When accelerating, the variator roars very loudly in the cabin. And in general there is no sound insulation in the car. It’s as if when creating the Mitsubishi ASX, the manufacturer simply crossed out sound insulation from the list of important comfort items. I was surprised that at this price the door trim is like in a Lada. Weak power unit. There is no additional option such as daytime lighting for the rear seats. Although if it weren’t for so many shortcomings, I probably wouldn’t have remembered the lighting.

Every time I am convinced that the Mitsubishi ASX should cost less. And the more people buy it, the more negative reviews I subsequently see on the site.

Cars produced by the largest Japanese company Mitsubishi are quite popular in Russia. And this is not surprising, their price-quality ratio is optimal, and their technical characteristics are excellent. An excellent proof of this is the Mitsubishi ASX. A stylish, comfortable, small crossover is appreciated by many domestic drivers. The car is suitable for both the fair sex and families.

The 1st generation Mitsubishi ASX was produced from 2010 to 2012, so today it can only be purchased used. The car has a spectacular appearance; a trapezoidal radiator grille is installed on the bumper. The top of the roof is slightly sloping, which has a positive effect on aerodynamics and gives a sporty style to the body. A new version of the front optics has been installed. The illumination angle of xenon headlights reaches 160 degrees.

Presented in several trim levels, equipped with different gasoline engines:

  • Volume 1.6 l, power 117 horsepower, manual transmission, front-wheel drive;
  • Volume 1.8 l, 140 horsepower, CVT, front-wheel drive;
  • Volume 2.0 liters, power 150 horsepower, manual transmission or CVT, all-wheel drive.

Cars with a 1.8 liter turbodiesel engine producing 150 horsepower are extremely rare. Since they are not officially sold in our country.

Weaknesses of Mitsubishi AS-X since 2010

  • Body;
  • Salon;
  • Engine;
  • Transmission;
  • Suspension.

The body is the weak point of a car. The paintwork is not of high quality, so it is easily scratched. After just a few years of use, chips appear on it. The seam on the trunk lid quickly rusts. The defect can be repaired free of charge under warranty.

Condensation in taillights and fog lights- another trouble that Mitsubishi Acx drivers encounter. It’s difficult to put up with this, but it’s possible. It’s much worse when the fog lamp glass breaks. This happens because the material is very fragile and cannot withstand sudden temperature changes.

The plastic in the interior is not of high quality, so it creaks over time. It is practically impossible to eliminate an unpleasant sound and many owners get used to it and do not pay attention.

Condensation collects between the roof and the upholstery. A sign of this problem is a drop on the ceiling lamp. It is not difficult to eliminate it; thermal insulation material, which must be glued inside the roof, will help. This procedure is troublesome, but not expensive.

Among all the cars offered on the domestic market, the most reliable engine is considered to be a 2.0 liter power unit with a capacity of 150 horsepower. If you carry out the necessary maintenance procedures in a timely manner, then problems are unlikely to arise throughout the entire period of operation.

The 1.6 liter engine with a power of 117 horsepower will cause a lot of trouble for its owners. Some of them don't start the first time. The manufacturer is working on this problem, but has not yet fixed it. At medium speeds detonation appears. The new firmware of the power unit ECU helped get rid of it. The fuel filter resource is 70 thousand km, after which it is necessary to install a new one.

There are fewer complaints about the 1.8 liter engine, but they still exist. The main drawback is the appearance of an unpleasant sound in the form of rattling. It is created by a vibrating drive belt tensioner. You can solve the problem yourself. To do this, you need to purchase a larger belt than what is installed by the manufacturer. It is laid out a little differently.

After a mileage of 60 thousand km, the belt rollers of the attachments fail. They wear out and require replacement. Otherwise the belt will come off.

The problem with the 2.0 liter engine is uneven idling. This happens when the throttle valve is clogged. During operation, subsidence of the graphite ring of the receiving pipe is observed. A sign of a malfunction is a hum when the engine is running.

A manual transmission rarely fails. But the variator is not reliable. It is characterized by frequent malfunctions that occur due to the fault of car owners. Improper operation and maintenance lead to numerous breakdowns. So, in extreme heat at high speed, the oil in it overheats. The corresponding light located on the instrument panel will help you find out about this. In this case, you need to stop the machine and wait until the lubricant temperature returns to normal.

Manufacturing plant recommends changing the oil in the variator every 70 thousand km. At the same time, install new filters. But in practice it is not possible to wait this period; it is necessary to fill in new consumables already at 30 thousand km. Since the lubricant loses its beneficial properties and becomes unsuitable for use.

The suspension is one of the most vulnerable parts of a car. It has a hard time withstanding the unevenness of domestic roads. The stabilizer bushings are the first to fail. This happens already after a mileage of 40-50 thousand km. After 15-20 thousand km, the front shock absorbers begin to leak. Other consumables may last longer. Struts - 140 thousand km or more, ball joints of the front arms - 180 thousand km. The cost of parts is low, so repairs will be inexpensive.

The main disadvantages of the 1st generation Mitsubishi ASX

  1. Poor sound insulation;
  2. Rear shock absorbers are weak;
  3. There is no all-wheel drive model in Russia;
  4. Rigid suspension;
  5. Central locking remote control;
  6. Low quality paintwork.

Conclusion.

Mitsubishi ASX is easy to maintain and economical in fuel consumption. Problems arise during its operation, but they are minor. Most of them can be avoided if you provide your car with timely maintenance. The costs of repairing breakdowns are small. For many drivers, this becomes a decisive factor when choosing a car. Used options are no less in demand than new ones.

All the "sores" of a used Mitsubishi ASX

“Do you have the same one, but with mother-of-pearl buttons?” The well-known phrase suits our material today: in the mid-2000s, many clients of Mitsubishi dealerships, looking at the Outlander, dreamed of the same thing, but a little more modest in size and cheaper. Get it - Mitsubishi ASX.

When choosing between two cars of similar price, men always preferred the one that was more powerful and larger. But women... As it turned out, many of them, on the contrary, want to drive compact models, and the number of “horses” in this case fades into the background. The first to prove this was the Nissan Quashqai, which became in short supply immediately after its debut. It is not surprising that such success prompted other automakers to rush after the cheeky ladies' favorite. But developing a new platform and bringing it to perfection is long and expensive. Mitsubishi took a different path: they shortened the existing Outlander XL, tweaked the design a little and rolled out a model called ASX. It turned out fast and cheap.

For every taste

In the basic version, the car was equipped with a 1.6-liter engine and manual transmission. In order to save money, the drive is, of course, only front-wheel drive. Such simple ASXs were in good demand among those who, in principle, considered compact passenger cars as a candidate. Girls, in our country who traditionally do not like to move the gearbox lever, increasingly opted for the 1.8-liter modification with a CVT. Finally, many still single potential buyers of mid-size crossovers were not averse to saving one and a half to two hundred thousand rubles and getting behind the wheel of a “dried Outlander” with a 2.0 liter engine, a CVT and all-wheel drive. This is how the new product skillfully gained an audience among a wide variety of categories of people.

However, it soon became clear that length and design were not the only differences between the ASX and the Outlander. The “younger brother” lost to the “elder” in almost all disciplines: in dynamics, controllability, adequacy of the brake pedal... Perhaps the only thing in which it turned out to be better was smoothness. Unlike the tough "Out", the ASX is much more careful with passengers. True, as long as there are few of them in the cabin. When fully loaded, even small bumps are fraught with breakdowns of the rear suspension. However, most of its owners drive alone, so they are not aware of this.

In terms of cross-country ability, the ASX is far from ideal. Of course, short overhangs and a ground clearance of 195 mm help it gallop cheerfully along gullies, but as soon as you stop or seriously lose speed, the crossover quickly turns into “real estate.” And it’s not so easy to pull it out of captivity: the eye hanging under the front bumper, as a rule, ends up in the dirt itself. Long attempts to cope with off-road conditions on your own will most likely lead to overheating of the clutch. Nothing bad will happen - the car itself will “ask for mercy” by turning on the corresponding indicator. By the way, the variator can also overheat - including when driving too actively in manual mode, even on asphalt.

Correct unit

ASX borrowed not only the platform from Outlander (strictly speaking, not even from Outlander, but from LancerX) - the engine base and suspension are almost the same. This explains the complete absence of “childhood diseases” inherent in any new model. All three engines are by no means new - they are borrowed from other Mitsubishi models. There are no problems with them, you don’t even need to worry about replacing the timing belt - all motors have a chain drive.

Gearboxes can also hardly be called problematic: mechanical ones sometimes have oil seals leaking, and at high mileage the bearings begin to hum, but this is not widespread. The variator does not require intervention even on the first copies of the model, provided that the owner of the car was careful. If you see a message about the variator overheating too often, it means that you are “lucky” to buy a car that has already been thoroughly “tormented”.

The picture with used Mitsubishi ASX is typical for any new crossover: if the previous owner operated the car carefully, most likely there will be no major problems. For those vehicles that have actively traveled off-road, the front and rear suspensions may require repairs earlier than usual; moreover, the variator often overheats and asks for a “temporary rest” when driving quickly in manual mode. In five years of working with a compact SUV, I don’t remember a case that could be attributed to the typical “sores” of the car. The Outlander's proven chassis and components give the ASX exemplary reliability.

Owner's opinion

Dmitry Popov, Mitsubishi ASX (1.6 l) 2010

It was not easy for me to choose a car. I immediately dismissed the “Koreans”, the Nissan Qashqai, as they say, “didn’t catch on”... I liked the Mitsubishi Outlander XL, but it seemed too big. I just read about the release of ASX and immediately ordered a car. I'm sure I made the right decision. ASX has never let me down: in three years of ownership, I only went to a service station for maintenance. And this is a big plus - the nearest dealer is 300 km from me. Of course, the ASX also has its disadvantages: weak paintwork, insufficient sound insulation. But these, unfortunately, are the general trends of the modern automobile industry. From extensive experience communicating with ASX owners, I also know about complaints about the suspension, ESD settings, and warranty replacement of shock absorbers at mileages of 40–50 thousand km. I picked up a lot of useful information on the forum of Mitsubishi ASX owners, where there are many solutions for independently improving the car at minimal cost.

Mitsubishi ASX is a small crossover, cute on the outside and quite comfortable on the inside, well suited for both a female driver and a small family. Before the appearance of the ASX in this class of cars, almost the only leader was, but Mitsubishi managed to give it worthy competition.

Externally, the car turned out to be quite impressive; the front of the car uses a trapezoid-shaped radiator grille (Jet Fighter style). And the sloping roof top not only gives a sportier appearance, but also improves aerodynamics. The Mitsubishi ASX uses fundamentally new front optics with xenon lamps that have an illumination angle of 160 degrees.

Weaknesses of a used Mitsubishi ASX

The front fenders are made of plastic, not metal like all cars, which is very good, especially for novice drivers, since these fenders withstand minor contacts with another vehicle or a parking post better than metal ones. The body of the Mitsubishi ASX is made of good quality metal, and even if chips appear on it, the metal does not cover with rust for long enough. And one could give the body a solid A for reliability, but the paintwork let down, which, like most modern cars, is quite weak and quickly becomes covered with scratches.

Power units

This car has only three engines - 1.6 (117 hp) is installed only with a manual transmission, 1.8 (140 hp) only paired with a CVT, both engines are found only on front-wheel drive versions, but the 2.0 engine (150 hp) is installed on all-wheel drive versions, paired with a CVT or manual transmission. There is also a 1.8 liter (150 hp) turbodiesel in the Mitsubishi ASX range, but cars with such an engine are practically never found on the secondary market, since they were not officially sold here. In the first cars with a 1.6 engine, engine detonation is a fairly common phenomenon, and it occurs due to the fact that the fuel at our gas stations is of dubious quality. Another problem, which affects only the weakest engine, is the freezing of the crankcase gas pipe, as a result, oil is squeezed out from under the oil dipstick (in 2012 the manufacturer eliminated this shortcoming).

The 1.8 liter engine has similar disadvantages to the Mitsubishi Outlander engines. The most common one is a problem with the alternator belt. The fact is that in some modes the belt began to rattle unpleasantly; this is due to the fact that the generator does not have an overrunning clutch. You can solve this problem yourself; you need to buy a belt that is a little larger and route it a little differently (there are a huge number of detailed diagrams on the forums).

As for the most powerful engine, it is one of the five most reliable power units, according to many reputable European publishing houses. Its service life with proper maintenance is more than 500,000 kilometers. As for the timing drive, all types of engines have a chain drive. This unit, like power units, has a fairly long service life and does not require special attention up to 300,000 km.

Transmission

Mitsubishi ASX is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission of its own production, or a V-belt variator with a metal pusher belt and torque converter. Before restyling, a “Jatco serial 2” variator was installed, and after that a “Jatco CVT8” was installed. Cars with a manual transmission are quite rare, and as for reliability, there are no complaints about the operation of this box, and there is nothing to complain about here. But the CVT cannot boast of such reliability, and during operation it can present surprises; most often, this transmission causes problems for owners of cars with all-wheel drive.

And if you want the variator to last as long as possible without breakdowns, change the oil every 50,000 km and not with any oil, but only with the one recommended by the manufacturer. Also, do not allow the transmission to overheat. The first signs that the variator will soon have to be changed are a distinct metallic sound when accelerating; The car keeps high speeds, but acceleration does not occur. If the light on the console lights up, this means that the variator is overheated and needs to be allowed to cool a little. When choosing a used Mitsubishi ASX with a CVT, you need to be very careful, since repairing this unit will cost 1,500 USD.

The all-wheel drive system is implemented using an electromagnetic clutch, which does not require maintenance. In the event of active wheel slip, this unit quickly overheats, an indicator on the dashboard will tell you about this. If overheating occurs, then it must be allowed to cool completely.

Mitsubishi ASX suspension

Mitsubishi ASX is built on the car of its older brother " », and has the same problems, but due to the fact that the ASX is lighter, suspension parts fail less often. If this car is used mainly in the city with a satisfactory road surface, then the first investment in the suspension will be needed after 100,000 km. But if the previous owner often stormed off-road or the roads in his region are not very good, you need to be ready to invest some hard-earned money in the suspension.

The first to not withstand harsh use are the stabilizer struts and bushings, followed by replacement of steering tips and shock absorbers, this happens at 50-60 thousand kilometers. The remaining parts, even if the car has not been much spared before you, will last quite a long time, 90 - 120 thousand km. This model is equipped with an electric power steering, which means that there is nothing to leak in it, and failure of this unit is very rare.

Result:

The Mitsubishi ASX has quite a lot of advantages, but like most used cars, it has its disadvantages. In fairness, it is worth noting that this car does not have many shortcomings, and they appear mainly in inaccurate drivers.

Advantages:

  • Reliable and durable power units.
  • Mechanical transmission.
  • Ground clearance 195 mm.
  • Metal timing chain.
  • The front fenders are made of plastic.
  • Moderate fuel consumption.
  • Reliable suspension.

Flaws:

  • Problems with engine detonation.
  • The generator does not have an overrunning clutch.
  • Weak paintwork.
  • If the variator breaks down, you will have to fork out money.

If you are or were the owner of this car brand, please share your experience, indicating the strengths and weaknesses of the car. Perhaps your review will help others choose the right used car.
