Peugeot 408 everything is fine, engine fault is on. The check engine light came on - what to do? The check engine light came on - let’s figure out the reasons for the car malfunction

05.11.2015, 13:21

Last night, leaving the yard, out of habit, I pressed the gas and got Jackie Chan. There was a squeak and the message appeared on the display: “The engine is faulty, repair the engine.” Resetting the battery terminal did not help. Signed up for an OD check. This morning I was driving to them when the car asked for refueling and I decided to refuel before the race.. After refueling, I started the car and realized that the receipt had disappeared. But still I decided to get to Peugeot.
The inspection master said that most likely it was due to low-quality fuel or the exhaust gas sensor was faulty; in general, they did not check it.
But still, the trip was not in vain because, under warranty, they replaced the protective plastic on the door pillars. :-D

05.11.2015, 13:31

Vin7421, oh-oh-oh, our drivers rub their ears, and in Ufa, God forbid, the salar presses into the back with terrible force :-D. Accordingly, fuel savings immediately began, the engine immediately runs smoothly. Looks like you need to go through transit :-D.

05.11.2015, 13:47

So I had never complained about the quality of fuel before. Everything was fine. Refueling is strictly Lukoil and sometimes Bashkirnefteprodukt.

05.11.2015, 19:53

All was good. Refueling is strictly Lukoil
I fueled it with Lukoil for two years, and then it so happened that I was returning at night from another region, a light came on, I had to look for Lukoil, and here at the entrance to Moscow on Entuziastov Highway there was a BP, I filled the tank full and went to bed... the engine started working more pleasantly and even a little quicker, yesterday I repeated the refueling at the VR again, suddenly it didn’t seem like it :)

05.11.2015, 20:07

I don’t particularly blame the fuel, and the tank was almost dry already...

It was still necessary to count the mistakes. My cooling fan resistor burned out with the same symptoms. Periodically, the “Check” appeared and sometimes almost immediately, and sometimes after some time, having managed to switch the engine to “safe” mode, it disappeared. After two months and 8 thousand mileage it was replaced under warranty.

07.11.2015, 15:51

It will appear again, I’ll go and fix the errors, for sure.

10.04.2016, 09:04

Hi all!!! I don’t know what topic to write in, so I decided to go here! (correct if anything). The problem is the following: somehow the message “engine malfunction” and the check appeared, I was driving around the city, I didn’t notice any loss in traction, only the sound of the engine seemed to float. I turned it off, took off the brand, about five minutes passed, I put it back on, the check light is on, but the engine runs smoothly, after the third start the check disappeared within 10 minutes. He thought that he didn’t like the fuel, after that he drove 350 kilometers and the check light did not light up. Yesterday I did a diagnostic and here are the results in the archive: error P0088: excessive pressure in the ramp (instead of the required 400-something it was 1000-something). The error has not yet been repeated and I hope it will not happen again. Before I caught the check, it was slipping and pressing the gas pedal to the floor (there was a need) and immediately turned it off, then after a couple of hours it started it and drove off. The error has been removed from the archive! More errors that could not be removed P 2133, P 2134 short circuit to + accelerator pedal. My question is, can anyone enlighten me on whether we have a fuel injection pump or a pump injector, should I prepare to replace the injection pump and what is its price? Well, the advice will be useful, maybe someone has encountered this or what they think about this

10.04.2016, 23:10

We have a fuel injection pump, but I don’t think it has anything to do with it.
My version: the problem is in the pedal, most likely it operates in parallel with two channels for each parameter, which the computer then compares.
excessive pressure damaged one of the circuits, a signal was sent to the computer which incorrectly issued a command to the pressure control valve.
When turned on again during self-diagnosis, the computer identified the faulty circuit and turned it off.
Now it works on the remaining good circuit and reports an error.
In principle, you can drive, no problem.
Well, to find out the reason, you first need to throw in a known-good pedal and see if the error goes away.

DV 6C TED4
The SIEMENS/VDO DV 6C TED4 system is a modification of systems for DW type engines and is used on a wide range of Peugeot, Citroen, Ford, Volvo, Mazda models with an engine capacity of 1600cc. A distinctive feature is the use of an injection pump with two plungers, which are located vertically at an angle of 180 degrees to each other. The injection pump includes a standard transfer pump in the low pressure line, VCV and PCV valves, and can develop a maximum pressure of up to 1600 bar with 200 bar at idle

Thank you! I’ve already thought about trying to change the pedals, but where can I get one, not buy it, the cheapest price is 8200! I have a cruise control knob with a limit, can it conflict and give these two errors p2133 and p2134?

11.04.2016, 21:52

12.04.2016, 10:56

yes indeed, p2133 and p2134 from the cruise, I looked at mine - the same thing
Thanks a lot!!! I think if you put a joystick without a limit, the errors should disappear...

Last night, leaving the yard, out of habit, I pressed the gas and got Jackie Chan. There was a squeak and the message appeared on the display: “The engine is faulty, repair the engine.” :-D
Same thing, it happened again last night. But the tank was full, just filled up.. But this time resetting the battery terminal helped. I don’t even know if I should go or not go to the OD.

Same thing, it happened again last night. But the tank was full, just filled up.. But this time resetting the battery terminal helped. I don’t even know if I should go or not go to the OD.

Do diagnostics, you need to understand what kind of errors are popping up, maybe the fuel quality is not very good

31.10.2016, 16:02

Please tell me what I can do myself or what I should be prepared for. The car is not under warranty. I calmly drove 135 thousand km to the village and turned off the engine. After 5 minutes I turn on the ignition and the error appears: “engine malfunction: repair the car.” The engine runs smoothly, there is no loss of traction, nothing out of the ordinary.
The only thing was that my summer “anti-freeze” was frozen and I periodically used the washer, in the hope that the system would defrost. After some time, I noticed that the pump did not make the characteristic noise. A little later the pump started working. Even before the trip, I refueled at a suburban gas station "Gazprom", although I always refuel at Gazprom, but at the same one within the city. Therefore, I blame the fuel, but again the engine runs smoothly. And the last thing I noticed was that the stock radio gets very hot. During the trip back to the city, the radio tape recorder spat out the disc, the disk was very hot, even with the radio tape recorder turned off, the disk inside was heating up, the plastic near the radio tape recorder was very warm, and a little further away it was cold. Hence the thought, maybe there is a short somewhere?

31.10.2016, 16:26

Grifq, I would start with diagnostics, see what the error is, and then follow the results. Is the radio working or not? The radio can get very hot due to wires shorting to the speakers or to ground. Are the speakers and wiring to them standard? If they were changed to others, check for short circuits, at least visually. It is not uncommon for speakers to be installed with a larger seating depth and the wires from them cling to the glass when it is lowered. The wire could have been torn off from the speaker and shorted to ground...

31.10.2016, 16:47

Everything is standard, nothing has been done or changed

31.10.2016, 16:50

I calmly reached the village 135 thousand km,
However, your village is not close *CRAZY*
In general, of course, you need to start by reading the errors and build from there.

31.10.2016, 16:58

I hope it won't be expensive...

31.10.2016, 22:46

In general, in the evening the “check” disappeared. However, the radio is glitchy, sometimes it reads discs and flash drives, sometimes it doesn’t. The radio is working. Perhaps because of the weather, the wire or something else damp, I don’t know. The log entry about the engine malfunction was not saved, or at least is no longer displayed on the display.

31.10.2016, 23:52

01.11.2016, 11:41

135 km)) I started talking about the radio because it began to glitch in front of the “check” icon. The disk is very hot, or rather, not normally hot. It’s clear that it gets warm, but it also got warm (not anymore) even when the radio was turned off. I also deliberately turned on the cold flow without the stove, and the turned off radio (the radio was also off) remained hot. In general, I won’t scan anything until the next “check”. The radio seemed to work.

Many of us have encountered such a problem as turning on the engine icon (Check engine...), the appearance of which frightens car drivers. We offer you the 5 most common reasons why the check engine light comes on on the dashboard.

The engine warning light usually appears without warning. The reason for the appearance of the Check engine cannot be immediately understood. Even if the car has auto diagnostics (for example, in cars such as ,), which scans all car systems for errors and, if any, displays a decryption on the information panel, the reasons for the appearance of the check engine light will not be decrypted.

For most drivers, the appearance of this warning icon on the dashboard means the need to urgently go to an auto repair shop to diagnose and eliminate the reason why the "Check Engine" warning sign appeared. But in fact, in most cases, when the “Check” indication appears, it is possible, and in some cases, perhaps, to eliminate the cause yourself without a trip to a car service center, which will save you money.

1. Replace the oxygen sensor (lambda probe)

The oxygen sensor in your car is part of the exhaust system that monitors how much oxygen is not burned in the engine's combustion chamber. This sensor helps control the vehicle's fuel consumption. A malfunctioning oxygen sensor (lambda probe) means that the car computer is receiving incorrect data, which can significantly increase fuel consumption and reduce engine power. Most cars have 2 to 4 oxygen sensors. If you have a home car error scanner, then by connecting it to the car, you can easily find out which sensor needs to be replaced.

For what reason does the oxygen sensor in a car become unusable? Over time, the sensor becomes covered with a layer of used engine oil (oil soot), which reduces the accuracy of reading sensor readings for regulating the gasoline mixture and distributing the optimum. A malfunction of the oxygen sensor in a car leads not only to, but also to an increased content of harmful CO2 substances in the exhaust.

What to do: If you do not replace a faulty car oxygen sensor, this can lead to your car's catalyst failing (it may burst), which will result in expensive repairs. The cost of new catalysts is very high due to the precious alloys they contain. On some cars, there are several catalysts, the cost of which can reach up to 90,000 rubles. So don't delay replacing the sensor. Although replacing the sensor and its cost is not very small, it is not commensurate with the cost of the exhaust gas catalyst system. You can also save on replacement costs by doing it yourself. Many car manuals have detailed instructions on how to replace the oxygen sensor yourself. If you know where the oxygen sensor is located, then it will not be difficult for you to disconnect the faulty lambda probe and replace it with a new one. Remember that you cannot delay replacing this important element!

2. Check the fuel filler cap

Many drivers, in most cases, when the “check engine” indication appears, will think about serious problems in the car’s engine, but will not even think to check the tightness of the fuel system, which may be compromised due to a defect or an insufficiently tightened fuel tank cap. This is a very common reason for the appearance of the "Check" engine icon.

Reason for the error: Leakage of the fuel system due to the passage of air through the fuel tank filler cap will increase the vehicle's fuel consumption, to which the vehicle's diagnostic system will generate an engine error by turning on the "Check engine" indication on the vehicle's instrument panel.

What to do: If, when the “Check” indication appears, your car has not lost power, and there are no audible signs of engine damage (engine knocking, humming, creaking, etc.), then first check the gas tank for leaks. Your gas cap may be cracked or not tightened enough. If the cap was not tightened enough, then after tightening it all the way, continue driving the car for a while to see if the engine error disappears. To prevent a check engine light from appearing for this reason, check your fuel filler cap regularly. Remember that the cover must be replaced with a new one periodically!

3. Car exhaust catalyst

An automobile catalyst helps a car make engine exhaust gases more environmentally friendly. It converts carbon monoxide and other harmful substances into harmless compounds. If your exhaust catalyst has become unusable, you will notice it not only when the engine icon (check) appears, but also long before that, when the car’s power drops by half. For example, when you press the gas pedal, the car will not have good acceleration dynamics as before.

What can cause a car catalyst to fail: If you regularly service your car in accordance with the car company's maintenance regulations, then the catalyst should not fail. The main reason for catalyst failure is untimely replacement of a faulty oxygen sensor, as well as non-regular replacement of spark plugs when their expiration date expires. When the oxygen sensor or spark plugs are faulty, the conversion of carbon monoxide in the catalyst into harmless chemical elements stops, which leads to overheating of the catalyst, which can therefore fail.

What to do: If your catalyst has become unusable, then you cannot drive a car, since the engine will not work correctly, warning about this by an indication on the dashboard with an engine icon (check). Also, your fuel consumption will be greatly increased, and there will be no engine thrust. Although replacing a catalyst is a very expensive repair, there is no escape from repairs. Although there is an alternative to replacing the catalyst with a flame arrester, this is not a 100 percent option. Unfortunately, if you are not an experienced auto mechanic, you will not be able to replace a faulty exhaust gas catalyst yourself. In any case, you will have to contact a car repair shop. Remember that timely replacement of oxygen sensors and spark plugs protects your catalyst from damage!

4. Replace the mass air flow sensor

The mass air flow sensor regulates how much air needs to be added to the gasoline mixture for optimal ignition of the fuel. The sensor constantly reports data to the car's computer about the amount of oxygen supplied. A faulty mass air flow sensor increases fuel consumption, increases CO2 levels in the exhaust gas, and reduces engine power and smoothness. Also, if the sensor is faulty, poor acceleration dynamics are observed. In cold weather, a car with a faulty sensor has difficulty starting.

What are the reasons for the failure of the mass air flow sensor: Most sensor failures occur due to improper installation of the air filter during its scheduled replacement. Also, if you do not regularly change the air filter, as required by the vehicle maintenance regulations recommended by the manufacturer, the mass air flow sensor may fail.

What to do: Theoretically, you can drive for a long time with a broken mass air flow sensor (several weeks or months). But you will notice that the longer you drive, the more your fuel consumption increases. Replacing the sensor in a car service is not that expensive, since the work itself does not take much time and is quite simple. The main costs are related to the cost of the sensor, which for some car models can be 11,000-14,000 rubles if it is an original sensor or up to 6,000 rubles if it is an analogue substitute. Replacing the sensor yourself is very simple. But due to the low cost of replacing the sensor, you can entrust this work to a mechanic at a car service center. Remember that you need to regularly change the air filter, observing the vehicle maintenance regulations!

5. Replacement of spark plugs and high-voltage wires

Spark plugs in a car are the main components for igniting the fuel mixture. If the spark plugs are faulty, the spark will not be supplied correctly to ignite the gasoline mixture. Faulty spark plugs often result in a lack of spark or an incorrect spark interval, which results in the engine not running properly. If the spark plugs do not work properly during acceleration, especially from a standstill, you may feel slight jolts.

What are the reasons for spark plug failure: Most spark plugs in vehicles built before 1996 need to be replaced every 25,000-30,000 kilometers. In newer cars, spark plugs last more than 150,000 km. However, these scheduled spark plug replacement intervals may be reduced by various factors related to fuel quality and driving style.

What to do: If your spark plugs have not been changed for a long time, or you feel failures in the engine operation associated with ignition, then you must immediately replace them with new ones without delay. Do not try to save money by untimely replacement of spark plugs, since the cost of spark plugs is not very expensive, as well as the work of replacing them. By replacing old spark plugs, you will improve engine performance and reduce your vehicle's fuel consumption. Changing spark plugs yourself is quite easy. Basically, they are easily accessible under the hood of the car. You need a regular spark plug wrench to remove the spark plugs from the engine. It is also advisable to monitor the condition of high-voltage wires, since over time they can become unusable and allow electricity to pass through, which is transferred to the spark plugs, which will reduce the strength of the spark. Remember that regularly replacing spark plugs, in accordance with your car’s maintenance schedule, protects your exhaust catalyst from breakdowns and also improves engine performance!

For the Peugeot 408 driver, it is no secret that the indicator on the dashboard is “Check-Engene” is a Peugeot malfunction signal. In normal condition, this icon should light up when the ignition is turned on, at this moment a test of all Peugeot 408 systems begins; in a working car, the indicator goes out after a few seconds.

If something is wrong with the Peugeot 408, then “Check-Engene” does not go out, or lights up again after a while. It may also blink, which clearly indicates a serious malfunction. This indicator will not tell the Peugeot owner what exactly the problem is; it draws attention to the fact that diagnostics of the Peugeot 408 engine is required.

Since all foreign cars, not excluding the Peugeot 408, are tightly tied to electronics, A huge number of sensors monitor the operation of the car. Therefore, diagnosing the Peugeot 408 engine is, by and large, checking the most important component of the car, with the exception of the suspension, which is checked mechanically.

There is a large amount of specialized equipment for diagnosing the Peugeot 408 engine. There are compact and fairly universal scanners that not only professionals can afford. But there are cases when conventional portable scanners do not detect malfunctions in the Peugeot 408 engine, then diagnostics must be carried out exclusively by licensed software and a scanner from Peugeot.

Peugeot diagnostic scanner shows:

  • Throttle valve opening value in percentage;
  • Engine speed in rpm;
  • Peugeot 408 engine temperature;
  • Voltage in the on-board network of Peugeot 408;
  • Temperature of air sucked into the engine;
  • Peugeot 408 ignition timing;
  • Fuel injection time by injector. Displayed in milliseconds;
  • Peugeot 408 air flow sensor readings;
  • Peugeot 408 oxygen sensor readings;
Before diagnosing the Peugeot 408 engine, you should listen to it; in normal condition, it works quietly, monotonously, and confidently holds speed. When you press the gas pedal, it picks up speed smoothly, without jerking, without any extraneous sounds. The exhaust is practically invisible. Also, a normal Peugeot 408 engine cannot have increased consumption of fuel and other liquids.

1. To diagnose the Peugeot 408 engine, first of all, the engine compartment is inspected visually. A serviceable engine should not have any leaks of technical fluids, be it oil, coolant, or brake fluid. In general, it is important to periodically clean the Peugeot 408 engine from dust, sand, dirt; this is necessary not only for aesthetics, but also for normal heat dissipation!

2. Checking the level and condition of the oil in the Peugeot 408 engine, the second step of testing. To do this, you need to pull out the dipstick and also look at the oil by unscrewing the filler cap. If the oil is black, or even worse, black and thick, then this indicates that the oil has been changed a long time ago.

If there is a white emulsion on the filler cap or you can see the oil foaming, this may indicate that water or coolant has entered the oil.

3. Checking the Peugeot 408 spark plugs. Remove all spark plugs from the engine; they can be checked one at a time. They must be dry. If the candles are covered with a slight layer of yellowish or light brown soot, then there is no need to worry, such soot is a completely normal and acceptable phenomenon and does not affect operation.

If there are traces of liquid oil on the Peugeot 408 spark plugs, then most likely the piston rings or valve stem seals will need to be replaced. Black soot indicates an over-rich fuel mixture. The reason is improper operation of the Peugeot fuel system, or an overly clogged air filter. The main symptom will be increased fuel consumption.

Red deposits on Peugeot 408 spark plugs are formed due to low-quality gasoline, which contains a large amount of metal particles (for example, manganese, which increases the octane number of the fuel). Such plaque conducts current well, which means that with a significant layer of this plaque, the current will flow through it without forming a spark.

4. The Peugeot 408 ignition coil does not fail often, Most often this happens due to old age, the insulation is damaged and a short circuit occurs. It is better to change the coils in accordance with the mileage according to the regulations. But sometimes breakdowns are caused by bad spark plugs or broken high-voltage wires. To check the Peugeot coil, it must be removed.

After removal, you need to make sure that the insulation is intact; there should be no black spots or cracks. Next, a multimeter should be used; if the coil is burnt out, the device will show the maximum possible value. You should not check the Peugeot 408 coil using the old-fashioned method for the presence of a spark between the spark plugs and the metal part of the car. This method occurs in old cars, while on the Peugeot 408, due to such manipulations, not only the coil, but also the entire electrics of the car can burn out.

5. Is it possible to diagnose an engine malfunction by the smoke from the exhaust pipe of a Peugeot 408? The exhaust can tell a lot about the condition of the engine. In the warm season, no thick or bluish smoke should be visible from a serviceable vehicle.

If white smoke is visible, then this may indicate a burnt-out gasket or a leak in the Peugeot 408 cooling system. If the smoke is black, then at best this is a problem due to an over-enriched fuel mixture. At worst, there are problems with the piston group.

If the smoke has a bluish tint, this indicates that the Peugeot 408 engine is consuming oil. At best, the valve stem seals will need to be replaced, at worst, the piston group will need to be repaired. All this fumes greatly clogs and reduces the life of the Peugeot 408 catalyst, which cannot cope with cleaning such impurities.

6. Diagnostics of the Peugeot 408 engine by sound. Sound is a gap, that’s what the theory of mechanics says. There are gaps in almost all moving joints. In this small gap there is an oil film that prevents the parts from touching. But over time, the gap expands, the oil film can no longer be distributed evenly, friction occurs between the parts of the Peugeot 408 engine, as a result of which very intense wear begins.

Each component in the Peugeot 408 engine is characterized by a certain sound:

  • A loud, frequent sound heard at all engine speeds indicates the need to adjust the valves;
  • An even knock, which does not depend on the speed, is caused by the valve-distribution mechanism, which indicates wear of its elements;
  • A distinct short knock, increasing at higher speeds, warns of the imminent end of the connecting rod bearing.
This is only a small part of the possible sounds as a result of certain malfunctions. Every Peugeot driver must remember the sound of a normally running engine in order to quickly respond to any changes in it.

7. Diagnostics of the Peugeot 408 engine cooling system. With proper operation of the cooling system and sufficient heat dissipation, after the engine starts, the liquid circulates only in a small circle through the heater radiator, which contributes to the rapid warming up of both the engine itself and the interior of the Peugeot 408 in the cold season.

When the normal operating temperature of the Peugeot 408 engine is reached (about 60-80 degrees), the valve opens slightly, i.e. the liquid partially flows into the radiator, where it releases heat through it. If the critical point of 100 degrees is reached, the Peugeot 408 thermostat opens fully, and the entire volume of liquid passes through the radiator.

At the same time, the Peugeot 408 radiator fan turns on, it helps to better blow hot air between the radiator cells. Overheating can damage the engine and require expensive repairs.

8. Typical malfunctions of the Peugeot 408 cooling system. If the fan does not work when the critical temperature is reached, then first of all you need to check the fuse, then inspect the Peugeot 408 fan itself and the integrity of the wires to it. But the problem may be more global; the temperature sensor (thermostat) may have failed.

The functionality of the Peugeot 408 thermostat is checked as follows: pre-warm up the engine, put your hand on the bottom of the thermostat, if it is hot, it means it is working.

More serious problems may also arise: the pump fails, the Peugeot 408 radiator leaks or becomes clogged, or the valve in the filler cap breaks. If problems arise after replacing the coolant, then most likely an air lock is to blame.

The check engine light came on - let’s figure out the reasons for the car malfunction

Many owners of passenger vehicles for the time being do not pay attention to devices and light bulbs that do not give “distress signals”. Owners of cool foreign cars loaded with electronics don’t know what Check Engine means.

For us drivers

When a light comes on, at best, drivers ask themselves the question: why did it light up and what to do?

Indeed, what measures need to be taken, when?

  1. Firstly, there may be several reasons for the light signal to come on.
  2. Secondly, the problem often has to be looked for over a long period of time and computer diagnostics are indispensable.

A little educational program

Most cars that come out of the factory today are equipped with a warning light mounted on the dashboard - a check engine light.

An active light indicates that the power unit needs to be checked. The control unit has detected a problem and informs you about it.

In the early 80s, cars were equipped with mini-computers that controlled the carburetor. Gradually the scope of application expanded. Currently, on cars, a “silent controller”, which has undergone a serious evolution, monitors:

  • for the composition of the supply combustible mixture,
  • fuel consumption,
  • speed of the power unit,
  • ignition moment.
  • controls gear shifting in the automatic transmission.

What logical conclusion can be drawn from this far from complete list of control functions? That's right, there are more than enough reasons for the check light to come on.

Consequently: Without certain knowledge and practical skills, it is extremely difficult to identify the cause of the warning light coming on.

So what needs to be done, what actions to take? Let's figure it out together!

Check engine light came on , how to proceed?

Did you know,

that the lighting of the Check Engine indicator is an inconclusive verdict of engine failure?

  1. If the Check Engine indicator indicates problems when starting the power unit and immediately goes out, do not worry. Your engine is not subject to “technical diseases”, is in good condition and cannot be “treated”.
  2. When you turn on the engine after the warning light appears, the Check Engine does not turn off for a long time - it’s worth thinking about. There must have been problems. They can be large-scale or minor. It’s better not to take risks and turn to specialists.

What makes the check engine “blush”?

  • If while driving a car you notice the Check Engine light coming on, the likely cause may be insufficient oil level in the power unit. In this case, it is recommended to stop and, without turning off the engine, open the hood and listen to the operation of the unit. If the motor runs smoothly: there is no grinding or extraneous noise or knocking, pay attention to the tightness. You may find leaks on the engine housing. It is recommended to seek advice and seek the help of service station specialists.
  • The Check Engine warning light may be related to the spark plugs. Most likely, one of them has failed (misfire).
  • The check becomes capricious when the fuel is of poor quality, which often happens when refueling. This problem appears as soon as you leave the gas station.

Let's look at the options for the Check Engine light to come on and ways to solve problems.

About problems and methods of elimination

Cause of malfunctionHow to fix
1 Poor quality fuel was filled.It is recommended to drain the contents of the fuel tank and refuel with “normal” gasoline or high-quality diesel fuel.
2 Problems with spark plugs: crack on the insulator, gap not adjusted, carbon deposits.Check and replace if necessary.
3 Ignition coil failure.Check the spark with an ohmmeter. Recommended output coil resistance 1–4, 2–3.
4 Lambda probe.Check the oxygen sensor. If it fails, it is recommended to replace it.
5 Catalyst.Functionality check required. If necessary.
6 Problems with injectors.A check is required to find out the cause. Clean if necessary.
7 The fuel pump is acting up.Checking the rail pressure. Normal state up to three atmospheres.
8 Problems with the fuel filter.If you find a problem, clean the filter, and or completely replace the fuel pump.

This is not a complete list of reasons why the Check Engine light comes on.

You can eliminate errors that have arisen without using a diagnostic scanner yourself. Experienced drivers eliminate the error in this way. Unscrew the battery terminals. Put them aside, avoiding short circuits.

Waiting time is no more than 20 minutes. If, after connecting the battery and starting the power unit, you see the clock reset and the control indicator extinguished Check Engine light you completed the task. However, you need to remember that accumulated errors are removed in this way. Real power unit problems will appear on the second day of vehicle operation.

How to check high voltage wires

The check engine light came on

Perhaps it's a matter of high-voltage wires? Sometimes it happens.

Advice: follow and carry out the instructions exactly.

Fill the pan with liquid. You can use an ordinary saucepan. Definitely made of stainless steel. Add a little salt. 1 tablespoon will be enough. Take a megohmmeter with the wires dipped in water. The ends should be on the surface.

We connect the device to 1 tip. Secure with a clamp. Place the 2nd clamp on the container where the wires are left on the surface of the water. If the resistance shows more than 1 megohm, the insulation is in good condition. In some cases, a value of at least 500 kOhm is allowed. If the indicators are below the critical level, replacement of the wires is required.

Recommendation: If self-diagnosis methods do not give a positive result (the check engine light is still on), specialist intervention is required. And urgent! Otherwise, problems may become widespread.

Tips for those on the road

No matter how well you understand cars, specialists armed with special equipment understand more about the occurrence of one or another reason for the “alarm signal”. Moreover, service station masters have constant practice, and this is experience that cannot be taken away!

Experts do not advise taking any measures to eliminate the malfunction; if you are not confident in your abilities, it is best to call a tow truck and send the car to the nearest service station.

As a rule, for many car manufacturers, the check engine light comes on when engine malfunctions are associated with injection problems and deterioration of emissions, which will greatly affect the environment.

Diagnostic work is the first step towards identifying possible problems. A brief diagnostic will show what caused the light to light up, and the technician will explain the essence of what is happening.

When going to a service station and driving a car, you must take precautions.

  • Do not load the power unit
  • Try to drive at a constant speed not exceeding 60 km/h.
  • Control the speed level. Do not allow it to go beyond 2500 rpm.
  • Reduce loads. Somehow turn off the air conditioning system and other additional equipment. Stop using your favorite multimedia system for a while. Turn off electrical devices that do not affect the normal and safe movement of the vehicle.
  • Drive smoothly, avoiding sudden acceleration and emergency braking.
  • Plan to make your trip to the service station during daylight hours. At night, headlights create additional loads on the power unit. You can move at night, subject to increased attention and compliance with the above conditions.

A habitual driving style is possible after checking the car and recommendations from service station specialists.

And further

You need to understand that the check engine light can come on at any minute. This is not a reason to panic, but only a warning about possible malfunctions. It is not recommended to ignore the check engine warning light. Since the consequences of neglecting warning devices are fraught with serious consequences.

Unstable operation of Franco-German EP6 gasoline engines, which are installed on the Peugeot 308, is a fairly common occurrence. The engine starts to stall when cold, the fan turns on, the check light comes on, in a word, it’s not very pleasant. There are plenty of reasons for this behavior of the motor; we just have to consider them and try to find a solution to restore performance.

Why does the fan turn on when the engine in a Peugeot 308 is running?

Check all possible causes.

Constantly turning on the fan, regardless of the temperature of the coolant in the system, is a sign of almost any problem in the engine.

Even with one spark plug not working, the fan will blow at maximum speed and this is quite normal in this case. If several more problems are associated with the fan, then it is possible to localize or at least suggest the cause of the malfunction.

Here are the main reasons for motor vibration (troits and intermittent operation):

  • one of the spark plugs is not working;
  • one of the ignition coils does not work;
  • misfires in one specific or several cylinders;
  • air leakage into the combustion chamber;
  • failure of the catalyst, incorrect removal of the catalyst without updating the ECU firmware;
  • incorrect operation of the gas distribution mechanism;
  • poor quality fuel.

Perhaps these are the main reasons for this behavior of the motor, and they will have to be considered individually.

Trouble the engine: check the spark plugs and coils

Naturally, when this bunch of malfunctions appears, the best thing to do is to get to the diagnostic center. There, an accurate check will be carried out on diagnostic equipment and errors will be detected (). However, at the initial stage, you can carry out diagnostics yourself, based on the readings of the on-board computer, and sometimes without them.

The most common cause of an unstable cylinder is a failed coil, spark plug or injector.

Which cylinder is tripping (cold check)

Let's find out which cylinder does not idle when cold:

  1. Open the hood and remove the plastic cylinder head cover.
  2. Let's start the engine.
  3. We remove the impulse wires from the ignition coil of each cylinder one by one.
  4. If the engine operating mode changes sharply when one or another cylinder (coils and) is turned off, then everything is fine with it.
  5. Disabling the non-working cylinder does not in any way affect the engine's idle performance.

Let's assume we have found out the number of the non-working cylinder.

Performance of spark plugs and coils

Old spark plugs are one possible cause.

Now it remains to check the performance of the coil and spark plug.

Swap places presumably a non-working coil with a working one and start the engine at idle. By removing the signal wires from these coils one by one, we find out whether the assumptions about the non-working coil are confirmed - if a healthy cylinder stops working, the coil is to blame. If the non-working cylinder continues to be silent, the spark plug is to blame. Conclusion - we replace the ignition coil and, if possible, the spark plugs in the cylinders.

Attention: when replacing spark plugs, under no circumstances should you throw the new spark plug into the well, otherwise there is a danger of damaging the gap between the electrodes, and then the new spark plug may not work. It is carefully lowered into the well and tightened strictly according to the thread with a special key.

If at this stage it was not possible to find a malfunction, we move on to more radical measures.

Misfires on Peugeot 308 - what is it?

It is possible to determine gaps in spark formation without diagnostic equipment. Here are the main symptoms:

  • engine troits;
  • the check light is on;
  • The fan is constantly running;
  • power drops sharply and;
  • An error message appears.

On the Peugeot 308, error codes for misfire start with P1336 (misfire, cylinder not defined), in order up to P1340 (misfire in the 4th cylinder).

Current errors.

There can be a lot of reasons for the misfire - from low-quality fuel to insufficient compression in a certain cylinder. If we have already replaced the spark plugs and everything is fine with the coils, then we measure the compression. Denomination - 12.6–13 atm in each of the cylinders. If the compression is not normal or one of the cylinders has low compression, this will indicate that compression rings stuck, possible air leaks, malfunctions in the gas distribution mechanism.

Problem with injectors

Clogged nozzle.

Errors Р1336–Р1340 can also occur due to a faulty or clogged nozzle.

To avoid removing the ramp, you can check the resistance at the injector terminals. To do this, you need a multimeter in resistance measurement mode.

The nominal resistance of the injector is 12.6–12.8 Ohms.

It only needs to be checked when a malfunction occurs. If everything is fine with the resistance, it remains - it is better to do this on a washing stand with a special liquid.

Timing problem

Problems with the gas distribution mechanism are not easy to identify and fix with your own hands.

To do this, it is necessary to remove the cylinder head and carry out visual diagnostics, as well as measure the valve lift height. For example, on an EP6 engine, the valve lift height at idle is 0.4 mm, and at high speeds - about 4 mm. The BMW VVTi system is responsible for changing the phases, which is quite difficult to understand.

Frequent breakdowns on 308s - valve seat misaligned or falling out , carbon deposits on the valve, which will also cause the above errors and symptoms.

Air leak

Air leaks can appear in several places:

  • head gasket;
  • intake manifold gasket;
  • suction through pipes connected to the intake manifold;
  • failure or clogging of the EGR valve.

conclusions

Most of these faults can be eliminated and diagnosed at a service station, however, the most common and simple problems can be eliminated independently. Let your engine run smoothly and the roads be smooth!
