We tested the Elantra with a 2-liter gasoline engine on the roads of Kazan. Subjectively new design turned out to be controversial. There was no cohesive style. The combination of sharp corners of the grille with the smooth contour of the headlights is not for everyone.
On the run
The capital of Tatarstan differs from the rest of Russia in having good roads, but we know the problematic nooks and crannies. Therefore, the new Hyundai Elantra 2016 will not only drive on a smooth highway, but will also try rough roads.
The stern is perhaps the most advantageous angle of the car.
The suspension layout is the same. There are McPherson struts in front and a semi-independent beam in the rear. The declared ground clearance of cars for our market is 150 mm. They are already assembled at the facilities of the Kaliningrad enterprise Avtotor using the large-knot method (SKD).
When driving, the car feels a bit harsh. Probably in the fight for better handling engineers made the suspension elements denser. As a result, the Hyundai Elantra overcomes road cracks, tram rails, and small potholes with noticeable jolts.

What hurts the car the most are deep seams and strongly protruding bumps. The impacts from them come to the rear axle and are felt even in the driver's seat. The Elantra overcomes the archipelago of unevenness from start to finish in the same way, unlike, for example, the Hyundai i30, where the first serious unevenness throws the suspension off balance, and the next hole is passed at the peak of its capabilities - with with strong blows and lights out.

The chair is made in Korean traditions. A short pillow, lack of lumbar support... But the adjustment ranges are by no means Korean! The scope with which the seat can be moved in the sled is amazing. From a position where your legs will be cramped even to a small child, to a configuration where even a basketball player will have to reach for the steering wheel and pedals. The range of movement of the steering column is no less - the volume of adjustments is sufficient with a margin.
The stepwise adjustment of the backrest makes it slightly more difficult to adjust the seating position, but despite this, you can find a comfortable and correct driving position.
The adjustment ranges are record-breaking. The seat moves in several (longitudinal, height, angle of inclination) planes and everywhere on long distances. Lateral support in shallow turns is optimal. You don’t need more, because the Elantra is an ordinary sedan, not a sports car.
Although on Korean market Buyers are also offered a charged version of the Elantra with the letter R. Under the hood it has a 1.6-liter turbo engine with a retuned suspension with a multi-link rear axle and sports decorations in interior and exterior.
However, even with a conventional beam, the sedan willingly screws into the road. There are no complaints about handling. Except that the electric power steering seems excessively light. On reasonable speeds it even gives an understanding of what is happening with the wheels, allowing you to predict the continuation. To a large extent, the stability of the exchange rate is also influenced by the increased rigidity of the body: the share of ordinary steel decreased from 43% to 31.5%, the number of hot stamping steel, on the contrary, increased from 3% to 14.7%, high-strength steel - from 15.1% to 36 %, and ultra-high strength from 18% to 38.3%.
Hyundai-Elantra: No complaints about handling.
The two-liter engine is optimal for the Elantra. It is enough for confident surfing in traffic. It’s a pity that the market will most likely be dominated by the initial 1.6 with 128 horsepower and 155 Nm. The same engine can be found under the hood of the Hyundai i30, Kia Cerato. Based on the results of acquaintance with such a unit on other models of the concern, you can definitely state that it allows you to frolic noticeably less than its two-liter colleague. The second, by the way, is also not known for the first day. The i40 sedan is equipped with the same. It is also found in s. However, in the shell of the new “Elantra” it is perceived to be a step more dynamic.
The six-speed automatic transmission gets along well with the two-liter engine.
The declared power (apparently taking into account the peculiarities of Russian taxation) is funny: 149.6 hp. with a torque of 192 Nm. And although, looking at the technical specifications, it is clear that this engine is resourceful (150 hp at 6200 rpm, 192 N∙m at 4000 rpm), the unit feels like it starts to move starting from the two thousand mark on the tachometer. The adaptive six-speed automatic transmission makes a significant contribution to acceleration. Sports mode he doesn’t have it, but with active pressure on the gas pedal he is not averse to maintaining low gears. There is no need to prepare for overtaking. I just turned off the gas and drove off. The accelerator itself is surprisingly responsive, especially by modern standards. It’s easy to dose acceleration.
Subtle shortcomings of the 2-liter engine, which can be forgiven for its elasticity and traction - a trolleybus howl in the initial zone of the tachometer and relatively high consumption: 8-10 liters per hundred kilometers in the combined cycle.
There is a lack of acoustic comfort when traveling on the highway. No sound insulation. Even through the music, you can hear the tires rustling in the wheel arches and small pebbles crashing. After a hundred kilometers per hour, the voice of the wind cuts through the area of the exterior mirrors. At highway speeds, conversations in the cabin have to be conducted in a raised voice.
Inside
It's funny that conversations inside are accompanied by a noticeable echo. A rare occurrence for a car interior, meaning big number hard finishing materials from which sounds are reflected.
Hyundai-Elantra: Probably, the absence of the European Union in the supply map gave the Koreans a free hand in terms of choosing finishing materials. The plastic is hard almost everywhere, making it feel like you're sitting in a car from yesteryear.
The instrument panel is illuminated in white, but the main backlight is still dazzling blue, and the frame made of gray plastic makes us remember the Taganrog Hyundai Accent.
Outside and inside
Outside is a different matter. Appearance new Elantra is strikingly different from its predecessor, although no fresh, elegant style has appeared. The sedan is simply perceived as a car. The grille is from the current Hyundai i40, the headlights are from Mazda 3... It seems that the chief designer of the concern, Peter Schreyer, is the person who transformed Kia look, started working only on final stage when it was too late to change anything seriously...
The result, subjectively, was a car with a controversial front end and a harmonious rear, but most importantly, an absolutely invisible appearance as a whole. Even a bright color does not attract attention in the city. In two days of testing, no more than five people noticed the hot new product...
In previous years, the main secret of the success of the Koreans was a proven combination of rich equipment, pleasant appearance and optimal price. Today something has changed. The depreciation of the ruble forced prices to rise. Taking on the economic challenge, Hyundai and Kia decided to take the restaurant route: that is, reduce options without increasing the price so noticeably. As a result, the basic Elantra for almost 900 thousand rubles will not even have a simple radio receiver - only audio preparation.
It’s a pity that in a car costing 1.2 million rubles, only the driver’s window lifter is automated.

The rear row of seats of the Hyundai Elantra in the new body is ready to warmly welcome up to three passengers. There is a folding armrest with round niches for glasses, air deflectors and even heating (not in all trim levels). Many car enthusiasts are looking forward to the updated Hyundai Elantra. In Russia, this model is not particularly successful. This is most likely due to its price - from 820 thousand rubles, but in the USA and South Korea it is in very high demand.
How attractive are small sedans?
Often small sedans do not greatly excite the minds of car enthusiasts. But at the same time they have their own distinctive features:
- interior convenience;
- trunk volume;
- modest “appetites” of engines;
- price/equipment ratio.
The updated Elantra decided to take a slightly different route. This car will probably be able to instill a love for the looks among consumers. The appearance of the current generation can no longer be called ordinary. As for the 2016 Hyundai Elantra, it tries to be a more solid car.
Appearance
The appearance of the car is distinguished by dynamic lines, as well as a rather large 6-angled radiator grille. The 6th generation of this model received the code designation AD. Experts have suggested that the new product from Hyundai will boast head optics that have LED sections. The i20 hatch (second generation) is designed in a similar style. In the photographs you can clearly see the low sloping roof. 
The designers decided to significantly change the trunk and roof contour. It is worth noting that the body of the new product was drawn “from scratch.” As for the glazing, it turned out to be narrower. The rear glass flows more smoothly into the luggage compartment lid. At the rear, the image of the new Elantra is decorated with a spoiler. The door located here has changed due to the appearance of a window. 
Interior
In the cabin, small recesses appeared in the door armrests. Previously there were large sloping handles. A questionable choice from a Korean automaker.
The control panel occupies the same place; in its central part you can see a new display. You can now operate the machine, as well as various options, as simply as possible.
The speedometer and tachometer are located in wells, so at night the information displayed on them will be much easier to view.
To heat the interior, there are openings located on the side of the control console. This will make it much easier for the driver to control the air flow.
A modern multimedia system, the main feature of which is a 6-inch touch screen, is not available to buyers of the basic version. 
Technical features
It is unlikely that we should expect a special revolution in the 2016 Elantra model. technically. Perhaps the platform will be the same. However, due to the availability of large quantities of high-strength steel, engineers will be able to reduce weight and also increase passive safety. Engineers should work hard on the suspension and steering wheel settings. 
Power units
The sixth generation of the Elantra model will receive 2 types of engines:
- diesel engines;
- turbo engines fueled with gasoline.
The most powerful is the 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle MPi with 149 hp. and a torque of 180 Nm.
All engines are offered with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. For diesel version A 7-speed DCT automatic is also available.
I wonder if these will power units as economical as the ? There is a high probability of a hybrid Elantra appearing in the future. The creation of an electric version of the car should not be ruled out.
Debut and price tag
The production version of the 2016 model was unveiled in Korea in early September and sales will begin next year. It can be assumed that the new product from Hyundai will become more expensive. The public was also able to get acquainted with the GT version of the Elantra, which was shown in Chicago (photo below).
