Motor oil for Ford Transit diesel 2.4. How to choose oils, fuel and technical fluids for Ford Transit

9 Jun 2015 For stable operation of a Ford Transit vehicle and maximum extension of the life of its components, it is important to correctly select consumables - fuel, oils and various liquids. At the same time, a common mistake is thoughtlessly buying the first product that comes along. For example, completely inappropriate types of lubricating fluid may be poured into the engine, which will invariably lead to a decrease in the life of the power unit or its breakdown. In this article we will look in detail at where and what needs to be poured.

Fuel

For a gasoline or diesel type (which is most often the Ford Transit), the high quality of fuel poured into the tank is extremely important. If you pour gasoline or diesel fuel of poor quality, then this is the shortest path to engine failure and additional costs. All that is required to complete the operation is to gain access to the tank. To do this, open the cap on the fuel filler neck using the ignition key.

Car enthusiasts, hoping to fill the tank full, often place the “gun” at the very edge of the neck (to avoid turning off the system). But this can lead to another problem - fuel overflowing from the top. To avoid this, remove the “gun” from the tank after the second shutdown.

Pay special attention to diesel fuel. If you use regular diesel fuel, in cold weather it will turn into a thick liquid. In this case, further starting of the engine will be impossible. To prevent this, even before the first frost, fill in winter fuel, which will be guaranteed to withstand low temperatures (down to -20 degrees Celsius).

If there is no winter fuel at gas stations, the temperature has dropped to extremely low temperatures, and the car is urgently needed to perform important tasks, then solve the problem using one of the methods listed below:

  • Add a small amount of kerosene to diesel fuel (25-30% is enough). At the same time, the kerosene itself must be of the highest quality.
  • Apply wax inhibitor. Its feature is to improve the fluidity of diesel fuel and improve its resistance to frosty air. As for the required dosage, the manufacturer’s recommendations must be taken into account. But you can use such an additive from time to time (not on an ongoing basis). Otherwise, the efficiency and power of the engine will significantly decrease.
  • If the temperature outside the window has dropped below -20 degrees Celsius, then diesel fuel can be mixed in a small proportion with gasoline. In this case, turnover rates also increase. However, do not abuse this method too often and be careful, because a mixture of vapors of two types of fuel can easily ignite. At the same time, keep in mind two important recommendations:
- gasoline in diesel fuel should be no more than 15%. Otherwise, engine performance may deteriorate;

- when mixing two types of fuel, try to fill only with the highest quality gasoline;

- first pour a small amount of gasoline into the neck of the tank, and only after that fill it with diesel fuel.

When the outside temperature rises, be sure to return to summer fuels. If possible, buy a special heater with which you can make the oil fluid. You can find one at the Ford Transit Service Center or a specialized automotive store.

Engine oil

Another important point is the choice of engine oil for Ford Transit. Here, for all types of car engines, the products of the Muultigrade Super Motor Oil company are recommended. Its specialty is the production of high-quality lubricants for Ford vehicles according to the API SG/CD specification. When choosing engine oil, you can also use other designations indicating viscosity and other characteristics. So, the following types are allowed - SAE 20W30, 20W50, 15W40. You can use two more popular types - SAE 2W50 or Ford Formula S.

To select oil based on temperature, you can use special curves (dependence of viscosity on ambient temperature). Here are the recommendations:
  • at temperatures from -30 degrees Celsius and above, SAE 5W50 oil is suitable;
  • at temperatures from -25 degrees Celsius and above - SAE 10W40 or 10W30;
  • at temperatures from -15 degrees Celsius and above – SAE 15W40 Multigrade Super Motor oil;
  • at temperatures from -10 degrees Celsius and above – SAE 20W50 Multigrade Super Motor oil.
When filling the oil, be very careful that the fluid level in the engine does not exceed the maximum mark and is not higher than the “MAX” level on the dipstick.

Gearbox oil

Many beginners have little idea what kind of oil should be poured into the gearbox of their Ford Transit. But here a lot depends on the type of gearbox available on board:
  • For manual transmissions, you should use oils from brands that specialize in producing oil for Ford cars. For example, a composition with the specification Ford ESDM-2C 186A or other related types is suitable. In this case, the oil is filled once and does not need to be replaced for the entire service life. The only exception is the need for urgent gearbox repairs. But in this case, changing the oil is the task of specialists at a specialized service center;
  • For automatic transmissions and Ford Transit cars with hydraulic booster, it is better to use oils from Ford or from any other manufacturer, but with the specification ESP-M 2C 166H. As for the liquid level, the recommendation here is similar - the level should not exceed the MAX mark.
During the period of car servicing at the Service Center, the oil level in the automatic transmission may change, so do the necessary checks and top up in the required volume.

Rear axle oil

To ensure the normal operation of the rear axle elements of Ford Transit vehicles, it is worth filling in a special hypoid oil of the SAE 90 series. At the same time, pay attention to the brand of the composition - it should be API/GL5. It is advisable that the lubricant be produced by Ford. If it is not possible to buy branded oil, then look for a composition with the specification:
  • SRM-2C-9102-A – for the rear axle without limited slip differential;
  • ESWM-2C-104-A – for limited slip differential.
The peculiarity of the rear axle is that it does not require periodic oil changes. The composition is poured once at the factory and is changed only in case of repair. The only thing that needs to be done during operation is to add lubricating fluid to the required level from time to time.

Coolant fluid

One of the most important systems in your Ford Transit is the cooling system. Its task is to remove heat from the power unit, reduce its temperature, and also effectively warm up in the cold season. To ensure normal operation, it is necessary to fill in special Motorcraft Super Plus 4 antifreeze (or products with similar characteristics) and distilled water. The ratio of the two compositions should be 50 to 50.

The second option is to pour only antifreeze into the cooling system. In this case, you should give preference to liquid with specification ESD-M97B-49A.

Check the level in the cooling system tank from time to time. When the engine is cold, the top edge should reach the extreme level of the "MAX" mark. When the power unit is well heated, the level may rise a little higher (this is acceptable).

If you choose the right coolant, taking into account the weather in the region and the required characteristics, then you do not need to change it from season to season. In the future, it is enough to replace it after repairing the engine, restoring the radiator, and in case of periodic replacement (in case of darkening, appearance of “garbage”, etc.).

Brake fluid

Driving safety largely depends on the choice of brake fluid. Here, try to buy compounds that meet Ford requirements. This could be ESD-M657A or SAM-6C 9103-A. At the same time, monitor the brake fluid level - it should be at the MAX “risk” limit. If the level is lower, top up.

The fluid in the brake system should be replaced no later than once every three years. Be careful not to accidentally get dirt or debris into the system. Otherwise, this may lead to serious problems with the brakes.

Window washer

Pay special attention to the temperature restrictions of a particular composition. It is best to pour Motocraft Screen Washer or its equivalent into the glass washer container. The mixing ratio with water is 1:100. When the temperature drops below zero, it is advisable to use a similar composition, but with the Winter prefix. Its peculiarity is the presence of special antifreeze additives in its composition.

To keep your Ford Transit running like a charm, fill the engine with only the right oil and change it regularly. According to service regulations, engine oil changes are required every 10-15 thousand kilometers or after 12 months. You need to understand that the regulated indicators are designed for normal operating conditions, and not focus on them blindly. The worse the conditions, the more often you have to change the oil. The size of the intervals between replacements depends on the following factors.

On the age and technical condition of the vehicle

Regardless of operating conditions, cars of all brands with “age” kill oil faster. The level of motor fluid in “age” minibuses is checked at intervals of several hundred km.

From the operating features of the minibus

Namely:

  • Where is the car used: in the city or on the highway? With a designated replacement interval of 15,000 km, motor fluid can work in the city for up to 700 hours, on the highway - a maximum of 200 hours. Loads increase with increasing speed. On the other hand, many kilometers of sluggish traffic jams in cities kill oil no less than enormous speed and off-road conditions.
  • How is the motor loaded? Engine loads depend on the terrain and the cargo being transported. When driving on a flat road and in the mountains, with and without a load, the load on the oil will be different, and, consequently, the interval will be different.
  • In what climate are the cars used? When using the van in conditions of high humidity or heavy dust, extreme heat or cold, the replacement intervals for fuel and lubricants are noticeably reduced. In case of severe operating conditions, it is recommended to reduce the mileage between successive replacements by 25-30%.

From the quality of the fuel

The duration of the oil change interval is greatly influenced by the fuel itself. Gasoline with excessive sulfur content (over 50 ppm) has a destructive effect on lubricants. When such fuel is burned, sulfuric acid is formed, which oxidizes motor oils.

What kind of engine oil is used in Ford Transit?

The importance of motor oil for an engine cannot be overestimated. Lubrication minimizes friction of parts, maintains the tightness of working cylinders and facilitates the removal of waste products. The work of the “heart” of a car is associated with the heating of its components, and the requirements for motor oils are extremely stringent. On various modifications of the Ford Transit, three types of engines are installed (gasoline, naturally aspirated diesel and turbocharged diesel). For each type of power plant, its own oils are recommended.

The modern car market is replete with fuels and lubricants for cars. Motor oils differ in brand, composition, manufacturer, and replacement interval. Depending on the season, oils are produced for winter, summer and universal use.

Ford minibus engines are filled with mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic oils. There are few real mineral materials on sale. They have been replaced by synthetic and semi-synthetic analogues with a high level of additives. The best oil for Ford is the original Formula F. But for various reasons, not everyone can purchase a branded product. Recommended motor oils include: Shell, Mobil, Kastrol, Mannil, Xado, Zic, Valvoline, GEnergi, Kixx, Consol, Lukoil, Rosneft. Each manufacturer provides instructions with comprehensive recommendations for using the product.

The Ford Transit is a line of vans designed for cargo transportation from the Ford Motor Company. Production of the series was launched for sale in Europe and China. To say that transit was popular is to say nothing. This particular brand was the best-selling light commercial vehicle for about 40 years. The Transit line includes seven generations, of which the first appeared back in 1965 and the last in 2013.

The legendary car must also be maintained efficiently and not forget about a complete oil change / consumables every 15,000 km under normal operating conditions. This distance may be reduced under increased engine loads, for example on poor or non-existent road surfaces, in conditions of extremely high or low ambient temperatures, high dust levels on the route, prolonged driving in traffic jams, etc. If you are in such driving modes every day, then change the oil recommended every 10-12 thousand km.

For diesel transit, the replacement period is 10 t.km. or once a year.

What kind of oil should I use and how much?

A good choice for the engine is all-season oils for both diesel and gasoline.

  • 5W-40;
  • 10W-40;
  • 15W-40;

Using products with this viscosity, you don’t have to worry about premature frosts.

Official dealers recommend using synthetic Ford Formula F 5W-30, but no one forces you to use official products. You can choose any more or less normal company or brand on the market, these could be:

  • Castrol;
  • Mobil;
  • SHELL;
  • GT-Oil;
  • Xado;
  • Lukoil;
  • Valvoline;
  • Valvoline;
  • GT-Oil;
  • Lukoil and many others.

How much oil is needed depends on the specific engine configuration and its power.

  • 2.2 TC (CYRB, CYRC) - 10.1 l
  • 2.2 TDCi FWD (QVFA) - 6.2 l
  • 2.2 TC FWD (DRFA, DRFD, DRFB, DRFC, DRFE) - 6.2 l
  • 2.2 TC FWD (CYFA, CYFC, CYFB, CYFD) - 6.2 l
  • 2.2 TDCi (PGFB, UHFC, UHFA, UHFB, PGFA) - 6.2 l
  • 2.3 16V RWD (GZFB, GZFA, GZFC) - 4.3 l
  • 2.4 TDCi RWD (PHFC, PHFA) - 9 l
  • 2.4 TDCi (H9FB) - 9 l
  • 3.2 TDCi RWD (SAFA, SAFB) - 11.4 l

Thus, we can conclude that a Ford Transit diesel requires 6.2 liters of oil.

The packaging must have the following approval - FORD WSS M2C 913C

Instructions

  1. Warm up the engine to operating temperature. Cold oil has low viscosity (fluidity). The warmer the liquid, the faster it drains. Our task is to drain off as much dirty, waste liquid as possible.
  2. For easy access to the drain plug (and in some models the oil filter is also attached from the bottom) and the bottom of the car as a whole, you need to jack it up or drive into an inspection hole (the best option). Also, some models may have engine crankcase “protection” installed.
  3. We open air access to the crankcase by unscrewing the filler cap and dipstick.
  4. Place a large container (equal to the amount of oil being poured).
  5. Unscrew the drain plug with a wrench. Sometimes the drain plug is made like a regular “bolt” under an open-end wrench, and sometimes it can be unscrewed using a four- or hexagon. Don't forget to wear protective gloves, the oil will most likely wake you up warm, but you need to be careful.
  6. We wait about 10-15 minutes until the waste flows into a basin or cut-off plastic canister.
  7. Optional but very effective! Flushing the engine with a special liquid is not included in the maintenance regulations and is not mandatory - but. By getting a little confused, you will be much better at flushing out the old, black oil from the engine. In this case, wash with the old oil filter for 5-10 minutes. You will be surprised at the black oil that comes out with this liquid. This liquid is very easy to use. A detailed description should appear on the flushing fluid label.
  8. We replace the old filter with a new one. In some models, it is not the filter itself or the filter element (usually yellow) that is changed. Impregnating the filter with new oil before installation is a mandatory procedure. Lack of oil in the new filter before starting the engine can cause oil starvation, which in turn can cause filter deformation. Overall this is not a good thing. Also remember to lubricate the rubber O-ring before installation.
  9. Fill in new oil. Having made sure that the drain plug is screwed in and a new oil filter is installed, we can begin to fill in new oil using the dipstick as a guide. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Also, you need to remember that after the first start of the engine, some oil will leave and the level will drop.
  10. In the future, when the engine is running, the oil level will probably change; be careful during the first few days of operation. Recheck the oil level using the dipstick after the first start.

Ford Transit axle oil

When choosing the type and brand of axle oil, you can choose universal oil of class GL4/5 with a viscosity of 75W90. In addition to it, 75W140 is also poured.

In terms of volume, you need to count on a displacement of 1.7 to 3.0.

Ford Transit gearbox oil

The best choice of gear oil for gearboxes is the original (branded) FORD 75W-90 VO, which is changed under normal conditions every 100 thousand kilometers.

The required volume for filling into the box is ~ 2 liters.

Video materials

The video clips presented clearly show the stages of changing engine oil; after watching, no questions should remain.

What kind of engine oil do you put in the engine?

Anton (Eigr)  I, due to some circumstances, fill up with Total diesel!

Anton (Eigr) was running 5w40

Yury (Sinjon)  esso

Robert (Masie)  esso diesel 10w40 semi-synthetic

Anton (Eigr)  a different question! What is the reason for your choice of oil?

Robert (Masie)  Mileage in the main.

Synthetics for new cars. Semi-synthetic for less new ones.

Oil with viscosity 10w - ambient temperature -25 +45. (subtract from net and add “35”)
Diesel oil. The letters CF - "C" - diesel, "F" - quality. The higher the second letter in the alphabet, the higher the quality.

Next we look at the manufacturer. Russia immediately disappears.
Shell is a good oil with detergent additives.
Castrol is also not bad, but they say it burns...
Mobil is the best of the above.
Esso is the same manufacturer as Mobil, only cheaper...

Vasily (Gyges)  for turbocharged ones, look for B3, B4 in the specification. Lew Shell +dizel 10W40

Kirill (Badal)  there is a special Ford oil, I’ve been driving on it for 9 years and everything is fine so far

Vitaly (Bratislav)  ZIC diesel 10w40 semi-synthetic
metal canister (who will fake it if you inflate plastic ones without problems)
good price (more affordable than listed brands)
And in terms of thetas, it’s somehow not even worse than a mobile phone, to say the least.
I’ve been driving ZIC for 12 years now, and not only with diesel cars, I have no complaints.

Nikolay (Onesiphoros)  mobile 10-40 earlier total synthetic

Sergey (Richy)  TEBOIL GOLD 5W40 full synthetic I buy only in Finland -vR.F. They sell a lot of crap!
All my cars ran only on this oil - there were no complaints.

Nikolay (Onesiphoros)  moved 10-40total just bought a barrel of 60 liters tried different manol and guys sometimes it’s useful to change to another brand different oils wash out the engine differently even if you drive 5000 km on it

Vasily (Gyges)  It was not Hessol who crossed over. They don’t do it in Russia, it’s reassuring. One drawback is not everywhere (

Vasily (Gyges)  Hessol has finally disappeared (((

Kirill (Badal)  what kind of pickle???

Stanislav (Khadim)  Visco 3000 10v40! Semi-synthetic. The company is a derivative of castrol. And besides, the consumption on it has decreased!

Vasya (Misao)  Ford 5w30

Nikolay (Onesiphoros)  Ford 5-30 orig
