Change the oil for Solaris. How to change the oil in a Hyundai Solaris engine with your own hands

The technical characteristics of the car determine its need to change the engine oil and other fluids. Despite the fact that this is usually done at the next maintenance, you can perform this simple operation yourself.

Another type of repair is also easy to do on your own - filter replacement; the Hyundai Solaris oil filter can be replaced in 10 minutes.

You need to start by choosing an oil, turning to professional advice and technical recommendations. Then set up a place for replacement.

What a car enthusiast will need:

  • jack, working pit or ramp;
  • set of tools;
  • working capacity 3.5 liters;
  • gloves;
  • a cloth for cleaning parts;
  • funnel for filling oil;
  • new oil;
  • new oil filter.

Replacement frequency

  • at the next maintenance;
  • after 10-15 thousand kilometers;
  • after engine repair or overhaul.

There may be other indications, for example, some car enthusiasts change the oil before the start of the new season, choosing autumn-winter or spring-summer brands with various additives.

IMPORTANT: The Hyundai Solaris oil filter is replaced according to the time limits specified in the vehicle’s operating manual, or simultaneously with an oil change.

How much to fill?

The instructions for Solaris require filling in at least 3.3 liters of oil. The volume of lubricating fluid poured does not depend on its characteristics; you need to be guided only by the technical documentation.

The oil is sold in 4 liter packages, this is enough for refilling.

What to fill?

Fans of the Korean manufacturer prefer to choose oils from Hyundai, either synthetic Premium LF (05100-00451), or semi-synthetic Super Extra (05100-00410). If this option is not available, you can choose any seasonally appropriate oil produced Shell.

The best oil for Hyundai Solaris

It is not always advisable to replace the recommended branded oil; it best matches the characteristics of the model. But if the car is operated in harsh climatic conditions, you can choose a thinner oil that meets the API SM and ILSAC GF-4 standards.

When choosing a filter, you must follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Hyundai 2630035503 is perfect, and if it is not affordable or is not available in your region, you can choose Mann W81180 BOSch 45103316 Sakura C1003.

Changing engine oil in Hyundai Solaris

The work is done as follows:

  1. A workplace equipped with an inspection hole or a lift is selected;
  2. A sedan or hatchback is installed. The engine should cool down, but not completely, the oil for replacement should be warm.
  3. Remove the cap from the Hyundai oil filler neck; where it may be can be easily found in the photo. After finding the plug under the crankcase, the dirt around it is thoroughly cleaned.
  4. The oil is drained into a working container with a volume of at least 3.5 liters. The process of oil leakage will take at least 10 minutes for the Hyundai Solaris, regardless of the engine size - 1.4 or 1.6 liters for the “iron horse”.
  5. During the oil change process, you can change the oil filter; this may be indicated in the vehicle instructions. To do this, a container is placed under the location of the part. The filter can be easily unscrewed by turning it counterclockwise. The sealing ring is thoroughly cleaned, then the filter is screwed until its bracket is firmly connected to the ring and another three-quarters of a turn.
  6. Oil is poured.
  7. The engine starts for 1-2 minutes.

The change process is accessible to any car enthusiast; all you need is a place equipped to work with the car.

The Korean car “Hyundai Solaris” belongs to the category of inexpensive sedans that are loved by domestic buyers. An attractive price with good technical characteristics and an interesting design makes this car very popular in the secondary market and among new cars. The engines installed on Solaris cannot be called demanding and whimsical. With proper operation and timely replacement of consumables, motors operate for a long time, reliably and efficiently. The main preventive measure is considered to be the right choice and the right one for the Hyundai Solaris. To do this, you need to select it correctly and change the lubricant in accordance with the instructions.

Hyundai Solaris engines are filled with Hilux Ultra SN engine oil with a viscosity of 5W20.

Replacement frequency

Based on the official regulations, it is recommended to change the oil every 15 thousand kilometers on Korean Hyundai Solaris sedans. But, taking into account the realities of Russian roads and operating conditions, car owners are advised from personal experience to reduce the interval to 8 - 10 thousand kilometers. To perform timely replacement, try to periodically check the level and condition of the working fluid. Remember that in parallel with the oil, the oil filter must also be replaced. Otherwise, the engine will perform worse, and the lubricant itself will quickly lose its physical and chemical properties. It is not recommended to save on consumables.

Level check

During operation, each car owner is required to check the oil level in the engine of the Korean Hyundai Solaris car. The procedure is not the most complicated, but it allows you to control the level and condition of engine lubrication. This is how they react promptly to fluid wear or increased consumption. If the amount of lubricant has decreased, but it is still suitable for use, you simply need to add the missing amount.

Follow the instructions:

If the oil has been filled for a long time, then you will need to check its condition. Drop it onto a white napkin or cloth. You can drop fresh oil of a similar brand and similar characteristics nearby. If the old grease is dark, cloudy, has traces of debris or particles of metal shavings, proceed with replacement.

Selection of motor oils

Before replacing, determine which oils to pour into Hyundai Solaris engines and what volume of lubricating fluids is required. Officials recommend using lubricants with a viscosity rating of 5W20 for both engines of the Korean sedan. But this is a conditional parameter, since much depends on the condition of the engine and the climatic conditions of its operation. At the plant, Solaris are filled with oil produced by Shell. This is a Hilux Ultra SN composition with a viscosity of 5W20. But the Korean Hyundai Solaris car is different in that it does not impose strict restrictions on the choice of suitable compounds. Therefore, car owners have every right to choose among various manufacturers and buy what they want.

It’s difficult to say specifically which is better for Hyundai Solaris engines if we talk only about the manufacturer. Someone chooses the official branded oil, which is produced by the SK company from Japan. Two types of lubricant of this brand are suitable for this machine:

  • Premium LF (synthetic);
  • Super Extra (semi-synthetic).

The main thing is to build on the characteristics of the composition. You know the degree of viscosity, but according to the API it is better to use the SM category. The possibility of using SL oils cannot be ruled out, but only if it is not possible to purchase or find SM. According to ILSAC, GF4 is preferred. As with API SM, GF3 is acceptable but not the preferred option. Of the alternative solutions among manufacturers for Solaris car engines, the following brands with the appropriate characteristics are suitable:

  • Castrol Magnatec;
  • ZIC X9, X7;
  • Mobil 1;
  • Liqui Moly Special Tec.

These are good, high-quality compounds that are optimally suited for a Korean car. The most common of them is Hyundai Solaris. For replacement, it is also necessary to know the required amount of lubricant to be filled. Regarding how much oil is in the Solaris engine, opinions differ. Many believe that the volume depends on the power unit itself. But in fact, both 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines provide the same amount of motor fluid.

So buy the right oil, take a good oil filter if it also needs to be replaced. Taking into account changing the filter in Solaris, 3.3 - 3.6 liters of fresh lubricant are required. The nominal volume differs from the actual volume, since even with careful draining, some of the lubricant still remains inside the system. You need to take it with a reserve, since initially the full volume is filled, after which over the course of a year or 8 - 10 thousand kilometers, lubricant is gradually added to the engine to maintain it at the optimal level.

detailed instructions

If you decide to use the Hyundai Solaris engine yourself, be sure to follow the instructions and follow safety rules. Before starting work, you need to put the car in a pit, turn on the handbrake and install safety chocks under the wheels. Additionally, it is recommended to remove the negative terminal from the battery. Although this measure is not mandatory, anything can happen when working with your own hands. To change the engine fluid you will need to take:

  • fresh motor oil with appropriate characteristics;
  • new oil filter;
  • filler plug gaskets;
  • rags;
  • an empty container for draining used engine oil;
  • special tool for removing the oil filter (filter puller);
  • a set of keys;
  • personal protective equipment (closed shoes, gloves, thick clothing);
  • WD40 or its analogues (if the fastenings do not lend themselves).

First, we drain the old oil, after which we fill the Hyundai Solaris engine with fresh lubricant. It looks like this step by step:

  1. Warm up the engine or start working as soon as you drive into the garage. If the engine is cold, then the lubricant will be too thick, which will not allow it to quickly and completely exit the crankcase through the drain hole.
  2. Before changing the oil, make sure that the car is securely in the pit, you have access to all tools, and there is a backlight. It is better to use a carrying lamp.
  3. Lift the hood, find the filler plug and unscrew it. This is necessary in order to speed up the process of draining old used lubricant.
  4. Go back under the car where you will find a drain plug. It is better to clean it from dirt. It is unscrewed using a size 17 spanner. It takes about 1 - 2 turns to remove the plug. First place an empty container under it, the volume of which will be 4 - 5 liters.
  5. Carefully remove the plug and allow time for all the liquid to drain out. It is important to try to drain as much engine oil as possible. To do this, you need to warm up the power unit to operating temperature. This makes the lubricant less viscous and removes it from the system. But be careful. Hot oil often gets into the hands of beginners due to careless handling.
  6. There is an aluminum washer on the plug. Check the condition of this seal. It is usually recommended to change it in parallel with the oil itself. But if you had to do this much earlier than the recommended time, the washer may still be in pretty good condition. The presence of any defect requires mandatory replacement of the aluminum plug seal.
  7. When you have managed to drain the remaining liquid, wipe the plug, insert a new seal and screw it into place. Wipe the crankcase with a clean, dry cloth to remove traces of oil stains.
  8. Let's move on to the filter. You can also replace it with your own hands on a Hyundai Solaris car. This procedure does not cause any particular problems. Place an empty container under the filter where some of the oil will drain. To drain it, turn the filter housing counterclockwise with a puller. When the fastening loosens, you can completely dismantle the device with your own hands without much resistance.
  9. After removing the oil filter, clean the seat from any existing contaminants. Otherwise, they will end up in the new filter and the engine fluid itself. The effect of such a replacement will quickly go to zero.
  10. A small amount of power unit oil needs to be applied to the rubber filter seal. Plus, the filter itself is filled 50% with fresh lubricant. This way it will fit into the nest better and be able to fully perform its functions.
  11. Tighten the filter by hand. There is no need to use a puller here, since excessive force will damage the housing. You may simply break it, which will force you to run to the auto parts store for a new filter.
  12. Go to the engine compartment. Open the filler plug and pour about 3.3 liters of oil into the engine through a funnel. Another 200 - 300 milliliters went into the filter, don’t forget about it.
  13. Tighten the plug, start the engine and let it idle for 2 - 3 minutes. Wait until the oil can indicator light on the instrument panel goes out. This indicates that the pressure in the oil system has returned to normal.
  14. Turn off the Solaris engine and let it sit for 5 - 10 minutes. This is required so that all the oil gradually flows back into the crankcase, and you can see its real level.
  15. Take the dipstick and check at what mark the oil film is. If there is not enough lubricant, remove the filler cap again, add a little fluid, close and warm up the engine again, let the lubricant drain to recheck the level. You need to get the oil trace on the dipstick between the L and H marks (minimum and maximum, respectively).

Replacement is complete. Now you know how to change the oil in Hyundai Solaris power units, and what is required for this. The procedure cannot be called complicated, since when replacing engine fluid a minimal set of tools and materials is used, and complex dismantling work is not required. The main thing is that the selected oil meets all the requirements and operating conditions of your car.

In modern society, a personal car ceases to be a luxury, becoming a necessary item of daily life. But in order for the vehicle to serve for a long time and not become unusable after the warranty period expires, the car owner must monitor the safety of its systems, mechanisms and individual parts. One of the most important procedures for maintaining the working condition of a car is periodically changing the oil in its engine. The Hyundai Solaris subcompact car, popular on the Russian market, is no exception.

But in what cases is it necessary to change the engine oil in the engine of a given vehicle? What technical fluids are suitable for lubricating the Hyundai Solaris engine? How to properly prepare for the procedure for updating the oil in the system of this machine? What is needed to change the oil in a Hyundai Solaris engine? What can happen to the car as a result of untimely replacement? Let's talk about this in the article.

When is an oil change required?

According to the regulations for changing the oil in the Hyundai Solaris engine, it is recommended to update the engine lubricant every 10-15 kilometers of active mileage - that is, once a year. However, in practice, replacing the technical fluid in the vehicle system is required more often.

The reasons for the need for accelerated replacement are the following circumstances and nuances:

  • Low quality or decreased level of motor lubricant used;
  • Features of seasonal temperatures and landscape of the area;
  • The car owner's passion for extreme driving;
  • Emergency condition of the constituent elements of the vehicle propulsion system.

Signs of obsolescence or unsuitability of motor lubricant in Hyundai Solaris are listed below:

  • The liquid begins to smell of soot;
  • The lubrication becomes uneven; upon closer inspection, lumps of dirt and metal shavings are recognized;
  • The original color of the oil changes to a dirtier and darker one;
  • The technical substance becomes thicker and fattier, and the original viscosity of the oil is lost.

In turn, if you need to find out the exact level of engine lubrication, check the oil using a dipstick. This meter for the amount of technical substance is removed from the control hole of the Hyundai Solaris engine, wiped with a napkin or rag and again immersed in hot oil. After this, the dipstick is removed again, and the car enthusiast can study its performance. If the indicator is equal to or less than the permissible minimum, therefore, the motor lubricant is not enough and it is necessary to urgently replenish its missing percentage.

It is important to consider that the reason for the need for an urgent oil change in the Hyundai Solaris engine may be a leak formed as a result of a traffic accident or a system breakdown due to a high degree of wear of individual parts. In these cases, not only updating the engine lubrication is required, but also a complete repair of the vehicle. If the breakdowns are extensive, the car owner should contact a Hyundai Vehicle Service Station.

Which oil should you choose?

First of all, the car owner needs to know how to choose the right oil for the Hyundai Solaris engine. When choosing technical fluid for the vehicle in question, it is recommended to pay attention to the following indicators:

  • Service life of motor lubricant. It must be at least 12 months;
  • Viscosity and composition of the oil;
  • Compatibility of the substance with the engine of a specific vehicle.

At the Hyundai plant, when producing a Solaris car, Shell Helix Ultra SN with a viscosity of 5W20 is poured into the car’s engine. Ideally, the car owner should continue to use this particular technical fluid during subsequent replacements, since it is most suitable for the Hyundai Solaris in terms of its characteristics. Acceptable alternatives include Castrol and Liqui Moly with appropriate viscosity, as well as synthetic oils 5W30, 10W40, 5W40.

Many car enthusiasts prefer original engine oil from the manufacturer - Hyundai Premium with a viscosity of 5w20. This motor lubricant is suitable for many engine modifications of this model, in particular for Hyundai Solaris 1.6 and Hyundai Solaris 1.4. The total volume of technical fluid required for filling is from 4 to 6 liters.

Stages of changing the oil in a Hyundai Solaris engine

The sequence of actions of a car enthusiast when preparing to independently change the oil in a Hyundai Solaris engine is as follows:

  • The location of the vehicle on an overpass or any other horizontal surface;
  • Preparation of the necessary tools and materials, namely:
    • Canisters, buckets or other containers for draining recyclable technical substances;
    • A technical syringe, watering can or funnel for pouring fresh motor lubricant;
    • Pliers, wrenches and screwdrivers;
    • Clean rag scraps or machine napkins;
    • If necessary, use new replacement parts. A car enthusiast may need: a new sealing washer (ring) for the Hyundai Solaris drain plug, a filter and gaskets for the pan.

Safety precautions:

It is strictly not recommended to start draining used lubricant from the Hyundai Solaris engine while the unit is running and warm. Technical fluid heated to a boiling point can cause severe burns to the hands of a motorist. Therefore, before changing the oil, the Hyundai Solaris engine must be turned off and given time to cool completely.

  • Placing a container for disposal of waste liquid under the drain hole;
  • Removing vacuum in the vehicle system. To do this, the hood is raised and the control filler hole is released;
  • Removing the mud shield from the Hyundai Solaris pan;
  • The pan cover is dismantled and cleaned of residual oil and dirt;
  • The oil drain plug is unscrewed, after which the waste liquid flows freely into a disposal container;
  • The oil filter is being replaced;
  • The oil drain plug is screwed back on;
  • On the roof of the Hyundai Solaris pan, the gasket is replaced, the cover is mounted in its original place.

After draining the waste liquid, it is recommended to carefully examine the consumables. If a large amount of burning and scale is detected, it means that the engine is thoroughly dirty and the Hyundai Solaris engine needs to be flushed. It is not recommended to carry out this procedure on your own - it is more advisable to contact a service station. But how can you fill in new oil yourself if flushing is not required? To fill in fresh fluid, unscrew the inspection hole plug and move the lubricant level meter to the side. Oil is poured until it reaches the edges of the filler neck. After this, the plug is fixed in its original position, and the Hyundai Solaris engine is started at idle speed for 15-20 minutes. During this run, excess air is removed from the system, but additional replenishment of engine lubricant may be necessary.

Consequences of untimely replacement

Changing the oil in a Hyundai Solaris engine with your own hands is a fairly routine procedure, so some car enthusiasts neglect it. However, such a frivolous attitude towards the condition of vehicle systems can lead to serious consequences, in particular:

  • To wear and irreversible damage to individual engine parts. If the lubricant is not viscous enough or too thick, it will not be able to neutralize soot and oxidation products. This creates a favorable environment for the development of corrosion processes;
  • To rotate the connecting rod bearings. Increased friction and overheating of these parts leads to increased pressure on them;
  • Failure of turbocharger elements.

All these possible car breakdowns require subsequent serious repairs, and therefore significant financial expenses. To avoid this unpleasant phenomenon, you should promptly update the engine lubricant in the Hyundai Solaris.

I have heard many times about the high quality of original Hyundai/KIA oil filters. I've always wanted to get one of these, preferably after a good run. And now, finally, the opportunity has arisen to test this very original filter, after a run of at least 10,000 km, on a G4GC engine of the previous generation.

The car, throughout its entire life, while it was under warranty, was serviced by the OD. After the end of the warranty period, I had the opportunity to dissect the filter from the last maintenance.

As we can see, the filter is made in Korea, from the YoungDong plant; the round logo and the company name in Korean, as well as the letter Y, tell us this:

There is another, official supplier of filters for Hyundai/KIA, this is the company Mann+Hammel, these filters are also produced in Korea, and not in Germany. Instead of a round logo, these filters will have Mann+Hammel Korea written on them and have a W embossed instead of a Y:

Well, let's start dismembering :)

We remove the bottom of the filter from the housing and the first thing we come across is an anti-drainage or check valve:

I want to tell you that during use, it has not lost any of its elasticity, due to the fact that it is made of silicone and not rubber. The operation of this valve determines how quickly the oil reaches all the most remote and upper places in our engine. If it works correctly, it prevents oil from flowing into the crankcase; if it “stiffens,” it will accordingly allow the oil to drain freely.

It did not deform or fall apart, which tells us that it was made from high-quality filter material. There are cheap filter materials that simply fall apart from prolonged exposure to temperature and oil pressure. You can imagine what will happen if a piece of such an element gets into any oil channel of your engine.

Inside we see the Hyundai logo:

And now we get to the bypass valve:

It presses quite easily and without jamming. Its function is to maintain constant pressure in the system, which may drop if it does not open in time. For example, when the oil is cold and has high viscosity, or when the engine is at high speeds, and it also opens, when the filter element itself is heavily contaminated. With this, there are no problems here either. In general, I really liked the filter; high-quality components were used during assembly, which makes me happy. It was important for me to find out whether it is possible to use original filters, or whether it is worth looking for analogues. After this showdown, all my doubts disappeared by themselves.

The only thing I would like to see in the design of this product is a bypass valve of a design that prevents, if it is opened, from flushing the filtrate from the surface of the filter element itself back into the oil system. To understand what we are talking about, look at this picture, where I have used arrows to indicate the direction of oil flow, washing away the top layer of filtrate, back into the engine, if the valve is opened:

Filters with a valve located not at the top, but at the bottom exist, and there is even a patent for this design: www.freepatent/patents/2240426. They are also produced here in Russia, and FORD also uses a similar solution in some of its filters. So Hyundai engineers have something to work on 😉

Thank you for your attention, good luck to everyone on the roads!

According to the maintenance regulations for the Hyundai Solaris, the engine oil in the car's engine must be changed every 15 thousand kilometers or every 2 years. If the car is operated in special climatic conditions or the driving style places heavy loads on the engine, then it is recommended to replace the lubricant twice as often.
In parallel with the oil, the oil filter and the drain bolt gasket must be replaced. The procedure for changing the oil and oil filter is simple and can be done by any car enthusiast with average training. It is more convenient to carry out the work on an inspection ditch, overpass or lift. For work you will need: engine oil, oil filter, drain bolt gasket, cleaning cloth, waste oil container, 13mm wrench, 17mm socket, special wrench for unscrewing the oil filter.
Hyundai Solaris is equipped with 1.4 or 1.6 liter power units; the oil change technology for these engines is completely identical.
