Homemade all-terrain vehicle from UAZ. All-terrain vehicles based on UAZ

Why are people so interested in homemade all-terrain vehicles based on UAZ? It is very difficult to drive both in rural areas and even on city highways. And if the condition of the roads can be called acceptable in the summer, then in winter driving along the “Russian obstacle course” becomes not only difficult, but also very dangerous.

For this reason, many Russians are thinking about purchasing their own all-terrain vehicle. Indeed, why bother trying to drive over potholes in a passenger car? It’s easier to do this on an all-terrain vehicle, which will also be a reason to brag to your friends.

But how to assemble it? The basis for such a car can be a simple UAZ. Homemade all-terrain vehicles based on this vehicle already exist and we have provided some photos below. Of course, the work ahead will not be easy. But you shouldn’t be afraid of her either. You just need to gather your thoughts and prepare the necessary working tools and materials.

What will be useful at work

  1. Prepare corrugated aluminum sheets. They will come in handy when you do the sheathing.
  2. Buy m5 screws.
  3. Prepare rubber and metal pads.
  4. You will need synthetic mats.
  5. Buy triplex glass.
  6. Stock up on foam rubber.
  7. Prepare some soft plastic.
  8. Get a sealant.
  9. Be sure to prepare a driveshaft, for example, from a Volga or some other powerful car.
  10. Prepare screwdrivers, wrenches and other tools.

Instructions for use

The body of our all-terrain vehicle will consist of a frame and outer skin. Such a homemade vehicle as an all-terrain vehicle, the base of which is UAZ, must be durable. That is why it should be made of steel materials. For example, strong steel pipes are suitable, which will then take on a huge load.

However, if you are not able to weld pipes or do not have the opportunity to acquire them, then you can leave the original UAZ body. Homemade all-terrain vehicles based on this car are different, and some of them hardly change at all in appearance. Having taken hold of its strengthening, work not only on the side walls of the car, but also on its roof. Particular attention should be paid to the bottom of the car.

Having strengthened the body, you can move on to covering the car. The process begins with the removal of the old casing. Of course, it could have been done while strengthening the body, which makes no fundamental difference.

The material for the new skin can be either aluminum or corrugated duralumin. The latter material is the most preferable, since it has shown itself very well in counteracting negative environmental factors, and duralumin almost does not corrode at all. Moreover, the corrugated coating makes its sheets much stronger than other materials with a similar composition.

When choosing duralumin sheets, make sure that their thickness is at least 1.5 and no more than 2 mm. You will need M5 screws when attaching them to the frame. They have countersunk heads that cling to the frame.

Of course, it will be impossible to tightly fit the corrugated aluminum to the metal frame of the all-terrain vehicle. Poor quality joints and gaps will remain everywhere. Therefore, it is necessary to use rubber pads, which are used as plugs.

Treat the sheathing process with extreme caution, because it is the most problematic part of the entire work. For example, by poorly securing structural elements to an all-terrain vehicle, you can make it vulnerable to external influences.

We will also give you this advice: M5 bolts with a countersunk head, as well as all places that will then be used as fastenings, should be treated with liquid silicone. This will help protect the car from corrosion, as well as moisture that can get into the interior while crossing river fords.

We will line the inside of our cabin with thin foam rubber and soft plastic. To glaze the interior, you can use trixel glass. When working with interior trim, do not forget to treat the interior with silicone or liquid rubber in the same way as you did with the body.

Thin foam rubber, which we use to improve sound insulation, can be replaced with foam rubber. But if you don’t care about comfort, then you can do without such measures at all. The top mats can be secured with glue or special rivets. Choose rubber foot mats, as they are much easier to clean than fabric ones.

You don’t have to change the seat of the all-terrain vehicle, but leave the original UAZ ones. But it is very important to place them so that there is also room for the fuel tank inside the cabin. It is installed behind the rear row of seats. Of course, special attention should be paid to safety here. For example, you can seal the bottom under the tank using iron sheets. Be sure to note that the tank must have a neck and a capacity of 45 liters. For convenience, an additional internal trunk can be placed above it.

We will do the glazing only after all other body work has been completed. The glass of our UAZ all-terrain vehicles should be secured in a special rubber frame, which will be more reliable in extreme situations. It is for safety reasons that we advised you to use triplex glass.

Their main quality and advantage is that they do not crumble into fragments during an accident. In this way, we can protect our homemade products from some force majeure events.

Front axle and torque

When assembling the front axle, be sure to pay attention to the wheel camber. The lower bearings should be welded first, and then the upper bearings. Both axles should be attached to the frame using bolts, clamps, and telescopic shock absorbers.

The torque from our homemade engine to the rear axle should be transmitted using a driveshaft from the Volga. This cardan has such qualities as simplicity, reliability and ease of operation. However, it should be mentioned that the mounting holes of the Volga driveshaft and the VAZ engine may not coincide. This does not always happen, but when faced with a similar problem, you should grind adapters from the flange bridges to the gearbox.

Well, now you are the owner of your own homemade product based on the UAZ! It will serve you as a reliable friend on off-road trips and an excellent family car on trips to the river and the countryside.

UAZ, Niva, Luaz on low pressure tires

Reducing the pressure inside the tires contributes to higher cross-country ability of vehicles, since such tires “flatten” directly onto the surface, creating a larger area upon contact.

Thanks to this, the weight of the swamp vehicle and all-terrain vehicle is distributed directly over several similar spots and significantly sharply reduces the overall specific internal impact on the ground.

The most important individual task is the overall reduction in the dead weight of wheeled all-terrain vehicles while maintaining the full rigidity of the structure itself.

Diameter and width

Basic calculations also show that in case of achieving maximum cross-country ability of all-terrain vehicles, on ultra-low impact tires under the conditions of weak-bearing plastic deformable soils, it is also necessary to ensure full pressure inside the tires so that it is equal to the soil pressure on the rubber along the bottom of the track and a flat spot appears on it upon contact equal to 1/3 or 1/4 of the total diameter of the main wheel.

The boundary that separates low-grip rubber from the road is considered to be the internal pressure inside it, which is about 0.3 MPa.

Tires with ultra-low pressure are directly related to off-road tires, and are also considered highly specialized for certain conditions of their use (although small-sized all-terrain vehicles can be used even in conditions of an ordinary asphalt city or country road).

Wheeled all-terrain vehicles with low-pressure tires are designed for all-season movement in off-road conditions, including swampy areas, various snowy areas, tundra, and sand. In addition, all-terrain vehicles on tires with ultra-low grip can overcome water obstacles by swimming, but only calm ones - without a strong and rapid flow.

The advantage of low-grip rubber on all-terrain vehicles

All-terrain vehicles that have low-grip rubber perfectly adapt to a wide variety of surface irregularities, and also provide a more smooth ride for a complete ride.

It should be noted that due to the fairly low specific external pressure on the ground, homemade all-terrain vehicles on low-pressure tires do not disturb the natural landscape or destroy the top layer of soil. Just look at the UAZ on tires with low grip - this is the best option for an all-terrain vehicle and a swamp vehicle.

At the same time, homemade all-terrain vehicles on tires with low pressure (there are videos on how to make them on the Internet), but this takes quite a long time and, in principle, swamp vehicles on tires with low pressure, homemade videos can also be found - just enter a query in a search engine . It is especially important to take into account that not every car can be converted into a swamp or all-terrain vehicle, but it is still possible.

Scorpio-3 is the most versatile all-terrain vehicle

Particularly noteworthy is Scorpio-3. The Scorpion-3 swamp vehicle (they have low-pressure tires on the UAZ) is an all-wheel drive, multi-purpose off-road, all-terrain amphibious vehicle, developed according to the instructions of law enforcement agencies.

At the same time, homemade all-terrain vehicles on low-pressure tires (video) are intended primarily for transporting goods and passengers on all types of roads and, at the same time, off-road directly in areas with soil low bearing capacity (sand, snow, tundra, swamp), with the possibility of full forcing various water obstacles.

The swamp vehicle is made on the basis of the main units and components of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant, manufactured directly with original external parts, as well as components from the production of the main concern.

In general, all-terrain vehicles with low-pressure tires, videos that can be found on the Internet, can also be equipped with armor, but it is thanks to tires with increased volume and low pressure that it has higher maneuverability in all kinds of swamps, snow and sand. In addition, homemade swamp vehicles on tires with low pressure video, of which there are a lot on the Internet, are able to overcome the ford itself afloat. In some configurations, such a special vehicle is also equipped with the wheels themselves from the main armored personnel carrier.

At the same time, it is still possible to create low-pressure tires with your own hands and, most importantly, use Belshina low-pressure tires and Trekol low-pressure tires for this.

In addition, swamp vehicles with low-pressure tires are one of the most popular and widespread vehicles with a wide range of applications. One should especially take into account the fact that Niva on low-pressure tires is one of the most common and popular.

One should especially take into account the fact that this base is one of the most suitable for all-terrain vehicles and swamp vehicles.

Avtoros - the best tires

Important! Pay attention to the fact that autoros low-pressure tires are among the most comfortable. As for the features of this technology, all-terrain vehicles breaking on low-pressure tires, a video that can be viewed online, are one of the most popular and widespread today.

With all this, low-pressure tires for an ATV also have their own specific nuances, and at the same time, their difference is the most convenient, and especially the ones on low-pressure tires are of the highest quality and most reliable.

Today there are all-terrain vehicles with low-pressure tires, a forum that is a must-visit. This type of equipment is one of the most passable and high-quality, and at the same time, the price is almost the same as for a standard car, although you will have to invest a little. This is especially true for the wheelbase. In order to buy or make all-terrain vehicles with low-pressure tires, the main page of which is freely available.

Features of this type of rubber

All-terrain vehicles on various low (and ultra-low) pressure tires have proven themselves to be the most reliable means of transportation, as well as transportation of various goods, both for fishermen and hunters, as well as for numerous agricultural workers, whose fields can only be processed on vehicles with low-pressure tires. pressure.

The industry of modern all-terrain vehicles is currently actively developing, and in the market of modern all-terrain vehicles, today you can see a fairly huge number of a wide variety of models, as well as modifications of swamp vehicles, various snow and swamp vehicles, and so on.

There are also all-terrain vehicles for the “weekend”, which currently do not have any special cross-country ability, although it is possible to get to places that cannot be reached with the most ordinary car without any problems.

For example, on weekends, during the May holidays and holidays, you can go to nature to relax.

Among the main advantages of swamp vehicles or all-terrain vehicles, the following should be noted:

  • By increasing the tire size, the ground clearance of the vehicle itself is increased. This is what guarantees easy overcoming of various bumpy sections of the road or those with deep ruts.
  • Another very important nuance is the increase in the vehicle’s cross-country ability several times. This type of rubber has a fairly large area in contact with the road surface. Thanks to this, the machine can move perfectly on very soft soil.

In addition to these advantages, improved tires also have some disadvantages. For example, there is a significant decrease in the speed of the car, associated with a significant increase in ground clearance, as well as a change in its basic characteristics, which lead to instability.

How to choose wisely

Today there is also a fairly large assortment of tires of this type. At the same time, their main and main disadvantage lies primarily in their high cost.

It is for this reason that most drivers use an alternative method, while making their own tires.

In any case, it is best to trust highly qualified specialists who have extensive experience in carrying out such work and, at the same time, almost everyone can afford to convert a car into an all-terrain vehicle.

How to make an all-terrain vehicle based on a UAZ

It is quite difficult to drive in rural areas and on suburban highways. Rainy seasons, piles of snow and mud can create serious travel problems. Because of this, more and more people are thinking about purchasing an all-terrain vehicle. Since such a vehicle has a fairly high cost, it is common practice to create UAZ-based all-terrain vehicles on your own.

Change beyond recognition

Usually, to create an off-road vehicle, it is enough to use spare parts from an old car or motorcycle. UAZ is best suited for this. This machine most often lends itself to various processing and modernization by “traditional craftsmen”.

For the work itself you will need:

  • use aluminum sheets with corrugated edges (needed for cladding);
  • buy metal and rubber pads;
  • screws and synthetic mats;
  • have enough foam rubber;
  • triplex glass;
  • soft plastic in small quantities;
  • necessary tools for work.

Carrying out such a modernization of the machine significantly reduces the cost of the entire structure. In addition, if the work is done correctly, the UAZ all-terrain vehicle will be no less effective than its expensive counterpart.

Instructions for carrying out work

To create a vehicle structure with high cross-country ability, you will need to fasten the outer skin and frame. Since the base from the car is used, ready-made homemade all-terrain vehicles based on the UAZ must be durable. So, it is better to use steel materials like pipes, since they will bear a large load. It is important to take into account insulation from moisture if you create a swamp vehicle based on an UAZ with your own hands.

Discounts on new cars! Favorable loan from 9.9%
Installment plan 0%

In some cases, when it is impossible to weld pipes or buy them, it is quite possible to use the original body from the car. In practice, the body is often modified to give it the desired look. But the main attention requires strengthening the “sidewall” and roof of the structure. The bottom needs to be strengthened, because it takes on part of the load.

Sheathing process

To create an all-terrain vehicle from an UAZ with your own hands, you need to remove the old skin. This stage can be carried out while strengthening the core. The material is chosen from corrugated duralumin or aluminum. Most often they choose the first option. It is able to withstand the harmful effects of weather conditions and is resistant to corrosion.

Strength is increased by corrugated sheets. When starting to choose them, you need to take into account that the thickness of the material is 1.5–2 mm. The sheets are fastened with M5 screws, which cling to the frame with special heads. Of course, it will not be possible to create maximum density between the frame and the corrugated sheets. There will be sloppy marks left after work, so you need to use rubber pads.

As a rule, the skin of a homemade UAZ all-terrain vehicle is the most vulnerable spot. If performed poorly, it can make the entire vehicle structure vulnerable to environmental influences. Silicone can also be used at fastening points for better insulation.

Engineering works

Great attention should be paid to wheel alignment when assembling the bridge. It is important to weld the lower parts of the bearings first and then the upper parts. After this, they are bolted to the frame. It is also important to use telescopic shock absorbers and clamps to optimize ride comfort.

It is worth considering the purpose of the vehicle. If you need a swamp vehicle based on an UAZ, you need to use a different type of wheels that can withstand bogs and mud. To do this, it is better to design a tracked all-terrain vehicle based on the UAZ.

Final stages

Torque is transmitted through the cardan shaft. It runs to the rear axle from the engine. Car parts are great for this. The advantages of such a cardan are its reliability and simplicity, because it is very easy to work with. It is also worth considering the location of the mounting holes, because they may not coincide. If such a problem occurs, they need to be sharpened.

After this, we can assume that the UAZ, converted into an all-terrain vehicle, is ready. It should be tested thoroughly to detect any possible problems. If such errors are observed, errors must be corrected, as they may pose a threat to the safety of passengers. You can also find other crafts made from cars, since making a swamp rover from an UAZ is also not difficult.

Almost all assemblies of such vehicles are assembled according to a single scheme. To operate, only the body and engine are required, and the driver assembles the remaining elements on his own. The choice of option for such a vehicle depends on the required cross-country ability and power. Each “craftsman” creates his own variation of the all-terrain vehicle, focusing on the characteristics of the surrounding area and financial capabilities.

When creating an SUV from an old UAZ, you need to pay serious attention to safety measures. All parts must be carefully rechecked for strength so that the vehicle is not dangerous to others. You should also take care of waterproofing so that moisture does not cause corrosion of metals.

16 most unusual cars created on the basis of UAZ

Since its inception, vehicles produced at the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant have been in demand. Until now, among motorists there are adherents of these cars, which are distinguished by their simplicity and reliability. At all times, there were specialists who were not satisfied with the basic configuration of UAZ cars and tried to turn it into something unusual. There have been many modernization options, but I would like to focus on the most unusual and memorable ones.

Luxury transport

Based on UAZ cars, in the 90s a company called LLD, which had working areas in Sergiev Posad and Moscow, assembled UAZ-31512 SUVs, which belonged to the luxury segment.

The LLD company, founded by the Larin brothers together with friends, worked in a certain style and produced work of such quality that it was often compared to Matorelli, a company in Italy. During tuning, the craftsmen used exclusively domestic components.

The main advantage of the SUV was its hard roof, for which multilayer sandwich panels were used. It was equipped with special fasteners that made the roof quickly removable. The interior also underwent changes, in which a new steering wheel, a plastic panel, and even new floor mats were installed.

In Crimea you can see a UAZ 2206, which was converted into a retro food truck by a specialist living in Sevastopol. This car still travels to various events so that no one goes hungry at them. You can buy baked goods, hot dogs and drinks from this vehicle.

House on wheels

Today, many people dream of a motor home with which it is convenient to travel and do not have to worry about spending the night. A metropolitan resident decided to convert a UAZ Cargo into a small camper. Behind the driver’s back there is a shower, a gas stove, a wardrobe with clothes, etc. It’s nice that such a motor home can drive on almost any off-road terrain, and therefore it’s not scary to travel anywhere on it.

Powerful car

Modernization does not always involve changing the appearance of the vehicle. For example, in UAZ-452 they decided to carry out internal changes. The standard engine was replaced with a powerful 3.2-liter engine that runs on diesel fuel and is capable of delivering 150 horsepower. An automatic transmission, lug tires and locking axles were also installed. By the way, the roof was raised by 12 centimeters. If you look into the salon, you will also notice certain changes.

Changing military model

Many associate the UAZ-469 exclusively with military transport, but not everyone considers this vehicle suitable exclusively for military purposes. There were specialists who equipped the car with soft seats, complemented it with a folding roof mechanism, and thereby made it a good option for a long-distance family trip.

Variation on a theme by Gelika

It is extremely difficult to turn UAZ cars into an exact copy of Gelendvagen from the world famous Mercedes Benz company. There are craftsmen who are trying to make this idea a reality. So far, the result of the work is impressive, but the UAZ Hunter has not yet gone through all the stages of transformation, and therefore it is different to talk about the final result.

Ideal for swamps and snow

The basis of the VTS P6WD-1150U vehicle, which was made specifically for driving through snow and swamps, was the same UAZ-425. To make the all-terrain vehicle larger, enthusiasts crossed its body with an extended Shigini frame. In turn, one bridge was added to it.

Yamal T-6 L

The UAZ Patriot pickup became the basis for the creation of the Yamal T-6 L. This vehicle weighs 2.8 tons. Its features include the ability to remotely regulate tire pressure, six-wheel drive, a transfer case from a GAZ-66 car, etc. The speed of the car is not high, but even 65 km/h for such a car is a good indicator.

Floating car

This transport was given the name “Superhead”. It was based on the UAZ-39095, which was seriously redesigned. Specialists replaced the carburetor, installed a centralized tire inflation system and power steering, and strengthened the suspension. The spacious body of the craft is used for transporting ATVs.

Crawler UAZ

Based on the UAZ-452, the TransMash company built an all-terrain vehicle called Vetluga. Experts decided to put the car on tracks so that it could move on any surface. She can even swim at a speed of 5 km/h. The car can be used to transport goods and people in wetlands and off-road. But you can’t drive such a car on the road anymore.

Another all-terrain vehicle

It is created at the All-Terrain Vehicles Plant and is called “Ukhtysh”. The UAZ Hunter is used as a basis. There are several trim levels with gasoline and diesel engines. This modernized model performs well on land, and it is also capable of moving on water, although the speed is low - 4-5 km/h.

Army SUV

The design studio "Cardi", working in Moscow, in 2006 presented an interesting option based on the UAZ-2970 prototype - a model of an army SUV. A ZMZ engine was installed in the car, which rotated a generator that supplied electricity to two electric motors. It didn't go beyond the layout.

Car for collectors

In the late 90s, the UAZ chassis was used by the Kirov Plant to create an armored cash-in-transit vehicle called the AS-1913 Lagoda. The factory did a good job on the armor, which could withstand a Kalashnikov 7.62 burst. The design also turned out to be interesting, but these cars were produced in a limited edition.

All-terrain vehicle based on UAZ

An all-terrain vehicle based on the UAZ is one of the most popular types of tuning in our country, given the huge areas of marshy and difficult terrain in the Russian Federation. Naturally, such all-terrain vehicles are also created for driving in the snow - many people like to go winter fishing or use this period of time for hunting.

Consequently, there is a need for a car with very good cross-country ability, which is why many UAZ car owners are starting to remodel their vehicles, improving their performance characteristics.

Before you begin: important nuances of such tuning

You can make a UAZ all-terrain vehicle from almost any model of this manufacturer. Most often, people choose a “commander” UAZ for tuning because of its more convenient and comfortable body. But “loaves” are also quite popular in this case, especially if a person plans to travel with a large number of like-minded people or plans to transport larger loads on his vehicle.

The next nuance is the requirement to replace standard wheels. In this matter, there are also two possible options for solving the problem:

  • Driving on low pressure tires. In terms of efficiency, such tires are better than the second option;
  • Installation of tracks. The UAZ tracked all-terrain vehicle can have two or four pairs of similar shoes. Installing two tracks is more profitable financially, and the stability and controllability of the vehicle is noticeably better than the use of four separate mechanisms of this type.

The best options for such all-terrain vehicles require very serious investments. At the same time, it is important to note that fuel consumption will also increase, so you will constantly have to bear additional expenses. When choosing a tracked homemade type of all-terrain vehicle based on the UAZ, you should also remember that such a vehicle is prohibited from being used on asphalt road surfaces without special permission in some areas.

Do-it-yourself all-terrain vehicle from UAZ

When planning to make an all-terrain vehicle based on a UAZ with your own hands, a person must clearly understand that he will have to solve the following problems:

  1. The best, high-performance all-terrain vehicles must have minimal weight, which improves their performance. The optimal weight of such transport is considered to be 1000 kg. The standard version of the UAZ weighs about one and a half tons, that is, it will take about 500 kg to remove from the car in order to achieve the goal.
  2. When driving through particularly difficult terrain, where there is a possibility of getting into deep snow or a wetland, it is important to ensure that individual elements of the vehicle do not create additional difficulties during movement. This point is especially relevant for the bottom of the car, where there are a lot of protruding mechanisms that can impede movement. Most often, homemade vehicles solve this problem by seriously increasing ground clearance. If the car owner plans to install tracks, then there should be no problems with ground clearance.
  3. Additionally, it is recommended to work on the interior of the car. Constant shaking and additional loads can lead to rapid failure of some elements, for example, the doors of an all-terrain vehicle. In addition, there is always the possibility of injury to a person during this type of movement. It is for these reasons that it is recommended to carefully consider the interior, install seals, foam inserts, and so on in the right places.
  4. Separately, you will have to work with the car's axles, which should be additionally fastened to the car frame using bolts and shock-absorbing systems.

Separately, you will have to work with the installed transmission and steering. Such a vehicle must have a minimum speed of 1 km/h - no more. This is especially true with constant use of transport in swamps. The desired result can only be achieved by installing the gearbox in no more than four stages. Naturally, power steering will be required, since it will be very problematic to turn the wheels or tracks only by applying physical force.

It turns out that creating such an all-terrain vehicle on your own is not so easy - you need time, money, serious experience in the automotive craft, and a clear understanding of the task at hand. If a car enthusiast is not ready for such tests, then, fortunately, there is always an alternative - you can simply purchase a ready-made UAZ-based all-terrain vehicle, which is offered by some companies. For example, the Uzola models are very popular, although they are only available in a tracked version.

Made by the author for a special order. The future owner wished to make some kind of crossing of a regular UAZ with a GAZ-66 and add to this composition larger wheels and several bells and whistles for better off-road performance. A model of such an all-terrain vehicle has undeniable advantages due to its axles, which are virtually indestructible even under the most terrible operating conditions. In addition, they have locking and swapping, which is also very important.

A very controversial project, even in my far from technical opinion, but nevertheless it was born.

Let's look at the mechanisms and materials used in this all-terrain vehicle:
1) the internal combustion engine was left over from the UAZ.
2) Manual gearbox from Gas -66
3) Front and rear axles from the same GAZ-66
4) The author used A-trans with dimensions of 1300 by 700 as wheels.

Let us consider in detail the most basic manipulations and improvements of the all-terrain vehicle.

First, you need to get acquainted with the frame of the structure; after all, two completely different cars, both in characteristics and in class, had to be combined into one indestructible composition on the new frame.

The image below shows the frame design, or rather its bottom view:

After constructing the frame, the author began to install the main elements of any all-terrain vehicle, and the car too.

In order to better understand the structure of the all-terrain vehicle, as well as to understand the stability of the machine, you need to look at the location of the engine. After all, it is the engine of the all-terrain vehicle that carries the bulk of the entire structure.

The main power unit of the all-terrain vehicle, already installed on the frame:

For a comfortable ride over bumps and bumps, as well as for greater durability and reliability of the structure, it is necessary to reduce the load on the frame and axles, and this can only be achieved by installing a shock-absorbing system.

Therefore, I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the photograph attached below, in which you can examine in detail the mounting of the rear spring:

Unfortunately, the front spring mount is quite poorly visible in the photograph, but the author did not provide better quality. I can only say that the author had problems regarding the difference in width, but the solution was about the same as for the rear spring, so the mount looks almost the same.

As for the wheels, everything is fine here. The selected tires are probably inferior in weight only to the excellent tires from TREKOL, but thanks to these tires we can say that everything will be fine with the axles and they will last a long time. And because of TREKOL, there is an increased load on the bridges, so choosing reliability, the author decided to abandon them.

By the way, here is a photo of the wheel installation process, look at the difference in size between a regular UAZ wheel and an all-terrain vehicle wheel:

It looks very impressive and the difference is noticeable both in appearance and in cross-country ability.

What advantages, besides the interesting design and impressive appearance, does this all-terrain vehicle model have?

One of the author’s good ideas was the decision to use side boxes, which can be seen on the sides of the frame, below. These side boxes are hollow inside, meaning they are filled with air. This was necessary so that the all-terrain vehicle could move not only on land, but also on water. That is, it is these boxes that provide the buoyancy of the all-terrain vehicle. Actually, thanks to this solution, thinner wheels than TREKOL could be used.

As already mentioned, the main feature of the all-terrain vehicle is the reliable and indestructible bridges from Gaz-66, their excellent qualities (as well as the build quality) are proven by the fact that during the year of intensive use of the all-terrain vehicle, no problems were found regarding the all-terrain vehicle’s bridges.

MO. Chekhovsky district.
February 2016

This is far from the first all-terrain vehicle from the VECTOR4X4 company, but one of the few in which the UAZ roots are easily discernible.

All-terrain vehicle" Vector U-469"created on the basis of the UAZ Hunter car

However, they didn’t just put “big” wheels on it, they did some “magic” on it

To keep the pedal assembly unchanged, the front axle had to be moved forward, and to preserve the rear doors, the rear axle had to be moved back. As a result, the wheelbase increased by 600mm (but now the approach angle has become completely negative)

New mounts

The car frame was lengthened and strengthened.

To install large wheels, a body lift with 60mm spacers was required

The choice of tires was determined by the purpose of the all-terrain vehicle - it will have to drive on the roads of Yakutia. Tundra and swamps are his element.
Accordingly, the all-terrain vehicle must float.
Buoyancy is provided by huge tires. Plus, in the rims. buoyancy blocks are located. This allows you to have less draft on the water and protects the discs from excess dirt.

Wheels with a diameter of 21" are made in-house and equipped with beadlocks.

To cover such large wheels, new wheel arches were made

They are reinforced from the inside with a square profile so that you can walk on them.

For operation in Yakutia, work was carried out to insulate the car. The ceiling, doors and floor are covered with thermal insulation materials. They did not make double glass, this was the customer’s wish.
Work was carried out to treat the underbody and interior of the car with anti-corrosion compounds.

A power bumper from RIF is installed at the front. An additional LED light is mounted on the bumper.

An electric winch Come Up 9500 in a hermetically sealed design is located in the standard place of the power bumper

Power thresholds manufactured by RIF are installed on the sides

To make it easier to get into the high cabin, special running boards are welded to them.

Since the frame of the all-terrain vehicle has become longer, a cargo platform has been created at the rear. With its help, it has become more convenient to load a tall vehicle.

The Hunter swing door remained unchanged.

There are standard 5 seats inside.
A compressor station based on Berkut-24 is located under the rear seats

A compressor station is needed for the wheel inflation system and for controlling pneumatic locks.

The main “highlight” of the all-terrain vehicle is the original wheel gearbox with a reduction of 2.8.

The gearboxes are serially manufactured by the Vector4x4 company itself and are intended for installation on UAZ, TOYOTA, NISSAN, JEEP vehicles with ultra-low pressure tires up to 1600 mm in size or extreme mud tires (bogger, simex) up to 44 inches.
Gearbox housing made of duralumin from D16T alloy, gears from agricultural machinery that have undergone careful screening, axle shafts of the original design.
The gearboxes have an input for the pneumatic line for pumping up the wheels.

Wheel inflation control is centralized. Directly from the cabin, you can adjust the pressure from 0.1 atm for traveling in swampy areas and up to 1.2 atm for traveling on public roads.

Pneumatic lines:

Disc brakes are installed front and rear.

The locks are also controlled from the cab. Indicators for turning on the locks are displayed on the dashboard

The dashboard itself remains virtually unchanged.

Steering of an all-terrain vehicle with hydraulic power.
The steering bipod is reinforced.

The 5-speed gearbox is standard, the GP and manual gearbox also remain unchanged.
Only the cardan shafts had to be redone due to the extended base of the car. They were lengthened, increased in diameter and rebalanced.

Everything is standard under the hood of the all-terrain vehicle

Gasoline engine ZMZ-409

The sides of the engine compartment are covered with special mudguards. This protects against dirt.

The all-terrain vehicle is equipped with a hunting hatch.

In order to experience for ourselves what it is like to control an all-terrain vehicle, we went out into the open spaces of the NATI training ground.
There are ups and downs, snowdrifts and ravines.

Need to say. that the Vector U-469 is easy to drive, like a regular UAZ.
It is clear that due to the lowering of the final drives, the speed will be lower, but this is partly compensated by the large wheels.

As befits an all-terrain vehicle with low-pressure tires, the vehicle runs smoothly. Small bumps are absorbed by soft tires.

The all-terrain vehicle went through hard-packed ascents and descents with a working pressure of 0.6 without straining.
For virgin soil, the wheels were reduced to 0.3.
The only obstacle that the all-terrain vehicle could not overcome was the slope of the shore of an artificial reservoir. A couple of meters before the top, the wheels tore off the snow cover and the ice underneath. There was no longer enough wheel grip, and the inertia that could have helped had long since dried up. So any off-road vehicle needs a winch!

I was pleased with the presence of inter-wheel locks. Without them, the all-terrain vehicle could fall into a trap even with a slight diagonal hanging. And so: I turned on two levers and drove off as if nothing had happened.

But changing tire pressure takes time. It takes 10-15 minutes to inflate or deflate all four tires.
But there is time to have a snack. It’s as if there’s a table in the back made especially for this :)

Snow and swamp vehicle " Vector U-469" is positioned as a more budget-friendly analogue of TREKOL.

It was based on -39095, which was seriously reworked.

In the late 90s, the chassis was used by the Kirov Plant to create an armored cash-in-transit vehicle called the AS-1913 Lagoda. The factory did a good job on the armor, which could withstand a Kalashnikov 7.62 burst. The design also turned out to be interesting, but these cars were produced in a limited edition.

Many car enthusiasts who are interested in fishing or hunting, as well as those who live in rural areas, often think about how to increase the cross-country ability of their car. Many people are interested in whether it is possible to turn an ordinary car into an all-terrain vehicle with their own hands.

UAZ brand cars are a very well-known domestically produced model, which was produced specifically for conditions requiring increased cross-country ability.

Patriot on low pressure tires

This is the UAZ-452, the so-called loaf - one of the first models with increased cross-country ability. “Bukhanka” has been used for more than 50 years in difficult traffic conditions, especially in villages. These are also the newer Hunter and Patriot models, released after 2000.

As you know, one of the factors that significantly increases the cross-country ability of a car is.

Many car enthusiasts manage to make a UAZ with their own hands on low-pressure tires, turning it into an excellent all-terrain vehicle that is not afraid of either muddy roads or snow piles.

Advantages of installing low-pressure tires on a UAZ

Let's look at the benefits we get by installing low-pressure tires on the UAZ:

  • the vehicle's maneuverability is significantly improved;
  • tires of this type increase the grip patch on the ground;
  • in such cases, special lugs can be installed that make the machine more squat;
  • the use of this type of rubber reduces the negative impact on the soil, which is very important in terms of environmental performance;
  • There is an increase in ground clearance, which inevitably occurs when tires with low pressure are installed.

Disadvantages of installing low pressure tires on a UAZ

However, tuning of this kind also has its drawbacks. These may be the following factors:

  • To install such wheels, you will need to make a number of serious changes to the design of the car. This is quite labor-intensive and entails significant financial costs;
  • a higher location of the vehicle’s center of gravity negatively affects its stability;
  • If we are talking about driving on asphalt, you must take into account that it wears out low-pressure tires a lot. Therefore, it is not recommended for all-terrain vehicles of this kind to travel frequently and for long periods of time on asphalt surfaces;

Disadvantages of low pressure tires on UAZ
  • You will also have to be careful with speed. Low-pressure tires are not intended for high-speed travel - here the main task is driving on off-road surfaces and overcoming obstacles;
  • the increased load on transmission units should be taken into account. When driving on soils that require high profile treads, critical load values may occur.

What you will need to consider when remodeling a car

If you decide to convert your UAZ into an all-terrain vehicle by installing wheels with low-pressure tires, you will have to take into account some factors:

  • Be prepared for the fact that you will have to make a number of serious changes to the transmission, axles and body parts of your car. This is especially important when it comes to converting cars such as the “loaf”. The UAZ "Patriot" on low-pressure tires will require much fewer design changes than the "loaf". This is explained by the fact that at the time when the old models were produced, modern technologies and materials had not yet been used;

Choosing tires for UAZ
  • When choosing rubber, it is very important to take into account the temperatures in which they are planned to be used. For summer and winter use of the vehicle you will need at least two sets of tires;
  • Low-pressure tires do not have a clear division into summer and winter options. For winter, types are used that do not become hard at subzero temperatures. This can negatively affect the vehicle's maneuverability;
  • When choosing a tread pattern, remember that “deeper” does not always mean “better.” Increasing the depth of the pattern increases the load on the transmission - take into account the soil on which you plan to move and choose the optimal option for the depth of the pattern.

All work on the production of an all-terrain vehicle based on a UAZ vehicle can be divided into several conventional stages. Let's look at them one by one:

  1. Choosing a base. If there is no UAZ in the garage suitable for turning into an all-terrain vehicle, we will have to find the necessary base. Remember that the older the model, the more changes will have to be made.
  2. We manufacture the rear axle and suspension. Here it is better to use an independent design. Its production will entail an increase in labor costs, but this will increase the maneuverability of the machine. The suspension is connected to the rear axle with a special strut and steering bushing.
  3. We attach the wheels to the suspension. Metal hubs are required here. We can use cameras from trucks like the Ural.
  4. We select the engine, carry out installation and design the cooling system.
  5. After installing the engine, we install the exhaust and brake systems and clutch. We install the headlights and connect all the switching.
  6. We carry out all the necessary tests of the resulting all-terrain vehicle, eliminating shortcomings and defects. After making all the corrections and positive test results, we can consider the work completed - our all-terrain vehicle is ready to overcome difficulties.

Conclusion

Converting a UAZ car to fit low-pressure tires- this is a whole range of works to improve the design.
