Does Creta 1.6 have enough power? Crete motors features and disadvantages

If you are surprised by my choice, I’ll explain: as of December 2016, this particular modification was one of the most popular. The starting price of a 1.6-liter single-wheel drive with hydromechanics did not exceed a million rubles, which from the point of view of buyer psychology turned out to be a success. But until last week, those wishing to purchase an all-wheel drive crossover had to overpay for a 150-horsepower two-liter engine. The price of such versions confidently rushed to a million and a quarter. And not everyone retained their interest in Crete.

The dealership gave me a completely new crossover in Marina Blue color (surcharge for any color except white - 5,000 rubles) in the Comfort package. The Advanced package (heated rear row, steering wheel and windshield, rear view camera, leather steering wheel and Supervision dashboard) for fifty thousand rubles was given to the test Crete as an option. Then - before the New Year holidays - the cost of such a car was 1,054,900 rubles. Today you will have to pay almost 1.1 million for a similar one. However, given the level of equipment of the Creta and the price lists of the main ones, the pricing does not cause protest.

But the interior at first glance seems too simple. There is not an ounce of soft plastic here, there is no automatic driver's window closer and there is no banal backlighting of the passenger control keys. And yes - the 5-inch touchscreen of the head unit is catastrophically small by modern standards. As a result, only the thought that 22 thousand people could not have made such a serious mistake somehow suppresses the skepticism emerging in me.

The first kilometers also do not cause much delight: the steering wheel seems pinched (and this is true), the noise from the engine after four thousand revolutions is more distinct than we would like. And although the suspension handles any unevenness perfectly, and the 123-horsepower 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine turns out to be not so “dead”, I am still perplexed: is this really the best crossover for about a million rubles? I’m perplexed and have no idea how much I’ll become attached to this car during our two-month test.

To fall in love with Creta, all you need is nothing: stop expecting driver-level revelations from her and start perceiving her exclusively as a household appliance. You don’t expect the refrigerator to lift your spirits by the very process of cooling food. And don’t sit “stuck” on the rotating drum of the washing machine. All you need is fresh food and clean clothes. It’s the same thing with Creta. Although, from the height of two months of living together, I can assure you: she drives well.

The steering wheel gets hot all around. Seat heating is fire. In all senses. There is enough space in the back for two tall passengers to sit comfortably. And with the rear seat folded down, you can easily transport three adult bicycles here - with the front wheels removed, of course. Ultimately, in 60 days, I never once found myself in a situation in which I could be disappointed in the Creta's capabilities. It started in any frost, warmed up and delivered from one point to another with more than adequate comfort. With any luggage. Only on the days of snowfall there was a little lack.

Unlike, Creta perfectly digests 92-octane gasoline: no hints of detonation, no drop in dynamics and no increase in fuel consumption. In the city, the 1.6-liter engine burns a little over nine liters per hundred in four “boilers”; when driving on the highway, it is content with seven. And if you try - six and a half.

Of course, during the test, the interior plastic did not become soft, and the diagonal of the touchscreen of the multimedia system did not increase by a millimeter. However, in the absence of serious disadvantages, you simply stop paying attention to these little things. In addition, it is heartwarming to think that from Cret’s point of view this should not be a problem either. Here is the simplest atmospheric engine, a classic hydromechanical automatic... And if we talk about the 1.6-liter version, the rear beam is as simple as two rubles.

It was sad to part with Hyundai. So, in return, I asked the dealership for a 2.0-liter all-wheel drive Creta - for another three months. For contrast. How much more dynamic is it? How much more gluttonous? Is the multi-link suspension at the rear more fun to drive?

Looking ahead, I will say that the answers to all these questions turned out to be not as clear as they might seem at first glance. And I will definitely tell you everything in detail in the very near future. Both on the website and on the pages of the magazine.

Today we will look at Hyundai Creta engines, which we will compare with each other and comparable with competitors’ engines.

The Korean concern Hyundai has established itself in the world market as a manufacturer of reliable power units. They are characterized by a high service life, reliability and ease of operation. Each new car that leaves the factory assembly line receives an authentic engine, manufactured and assembled at the factory facilities. Korean engineers did not break established traditions and installed two gasoline engines on the Hyundai Greta:
1. 1.6 liter power unit.
2. Engine power two liters.
Both engines are powered by AI-95. Moreover, the 1.6 liter engine can use AI-92 as fuel. It is clear that each has its own flavor, but there are certain disadvantages.

Regarding the features and technical characteristics of Hyundai Greta power units
The type of power plant design is in-line. In both cases, the cylinders are located transversely. There are 4 of them, as well as valves. There is a difference in engine volume: 1.6 versus 2.0 liters.
The cylinder diameter of the unit of lower power is 77 mm. For the two-liter version this figure is 81 mm. There are also differences in compression ratio: 10.3 versus 10.5 of the more powerful one.
The power ratings are also different. The “smaller brother” is capable of producing 151 Nm with a maximum power of 123 l/force. The two-liter version has 192 Nm. The power of the installation is 149.6 horsepower. Both designs are equipped with a distributor injection system.
Let's define the features of each unit and start reviewing the basic version.

Powertrain 1.6 MPI

The basic version of the engine is closely related to the Gamma family. She is known not only in Russia, but throughout the entire post-Soviet space. A simplified version of the power plant in question has previously been used on a number of Honda and Kia car models. Let's take a look at the distinctive features of the 123 l/hp engine.
The cylinder block is made of light aluminum alloy. Despite its light weight, it (the block) is considered very reliable.
The timing system uses a belt.
The injection system is equipped with a special fuel rail.
Engineers specified an individual ignition coil for each cylinder.
The unit has 16 valves. Adjustment is carried out mechanically.
Simplicity and reliability are the key features of the 1.6-liter power plant.
According to experts and user reviews, the Creta 1.6 engine is very economical. As noted earlier, you can use base 95 gasoline or 92 gasoline as fuel.

If you stand still and don’t improve your setup, your competitors will overtake you. The engineers of the Korean concern also understand this. So, certain changes have been made to the latest version of the crossover:
the CWT phase adjustment system has been improved;
regarding the technical characteristics of the motor. The rated engine power is 123 l/force with a unit volume of 1.6 liters;
the developers gave preference to an aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head;
A coil is used to supply ignition.
It is necessary to say something about fuel consumption. Average figures are 7 liters per hundred.

Powertrain 2.0 MPI

This engine belongs to the Hyundai family of power units and is considered a more advanced version. In its favor is the fact that it is operated on a crossover version with all-wheel drive. Although the total operational period is only 3 years. The features of the two-liter unit include the following. The use of a cylinder block, in the production of which light alloy metals are involved.

The chain drive serves 2 shafts simultaneously.
The transmission and intake shafts are combined with a CWT phase control system.
The power unit is equipped with a distribution injection system.
In version 2.0, the valve tappets are adjusted automatically.
The engine can be “powered” by 92 gasoline as fuel. This allows you to reduce (save) basic fuel consumption indicators.

Note!

With the existing capacity of 164-167 mares, the Russians are offered only a unit with a capacity of 149.6 l/hp. The use of only one version is due to transport tax legislation. But this fact in no way affected the dynamics of the car.
An adjustment system for the geometry of the intake tract is connected to the Creta 2.0 power plant.
Speaking about the positive aspects of power plants, there is no need to artificially raise them to the automotive Olympus. It is necessary to expose the shortcomings, which we will try to do.

Disadvantages of power units 1.6 and 2.0 Hyundai Greta

Although the engines are assembled in China, there is no particular reason to worry about this. But, there are certain shortcomings: the complexity of the restoration process (repair) and the low threshold for operation. According to the official version, without major repairs, engines can operate within 180-200 thousand kilometers. There is unofficial evidence that the service life can be increased to 300 thousand with proper and regular maintenance. But, we will adhere to the official position of the Korean concern. According to experts, the price of cylinder blocks is too high. The service life of the parts is 250 thousand kilometers. And the cost reaches 80 thousand rubles. So consider the economy.

Problems with sleeves made of cast iron. They are filled with liquid aluminum and combined with the structure of the block. What does this mean in practice? It is unrealistic to repair and/or change individual elements. Difficulties associated with the aluminum cylinder block. Yes, it is light and reliable - no doubt. But, at the same time, it cannot be wasted. The block wears out quickly. At the same time, its productivity is lost and fuel consumption increases. And most importantly: the cylinder block, made of aluminum, cannot be repaired.

A few words about competitors
A large company has gathered in this segment, including representatives of Renault Kaptur, Kia Soul, Skoda Yeti. Korean engines are considered leaders. This is due to its power and moderate gas mileage. And also the ability to vary fuel using AI-95 and AI-92. This fact can only amuse our compatriots.
But the developers made one significant mistake: they neglected the main thing - maintainability, chasing lightness and manufacturability.

What conclusions can be drawn from the above?

The 1.6-liter engine boasts an aluminum cylinder block, a timing belt and an injection system using an injector. In addition, the engine has minimal fuel consumption: 7 liters per hundred.
The 2.0 engine is capable of being combined with an all-wheel drive system. This puts it head and shoulders above its competitors. Fuel consumption is only 8 liters per 100 kilometers.
The Creta motor cannot be called an ideal creation of technical thought. Although it outperforms its closest competitors. The advantages of Korean engines are reliability, power and efficiency.

General impression:

I'm happy with the car. Price and quality. I decided on the box a long time ago. At first I chose between a 1.6 manual transmission front-wheel drive and a 1.6 manual transmission 4X4. In the end (after weighing all the pros and cons), my choice fell on the 1.6 front-wheel drive with the handle at maximum speed (travel + advance package). Bought it via trade-in. I finished my purchase in one day (lucky, I didn’t have to wait six months as they wrote in earlier reviews). Probably at the plant in St. Petersburg they began to work tirelessly and without washing their feet. A small bonus was that the turn signal repeaters are located in the side mirrors (according to the price list they should be in the side wings). Probably a new car in the 2018 model range. It’s bad that they don’t produce KRETU manual transmission with a 2-liter engine. I wouldn't mind having one like this. Perhaps it will appear in the next restalings. I would like to add that the CRETA with a 1.6 manual transmission engine and front-wheel drive still drives around the city and on the highway, no matter what. In addition, I believe that CRETA 1.6 automatic transmission (front or all-wheel drive), as well as 1.6 manual transmission (all-wheel drive) means poor acceleration and increased fuel consumption.

Advantages:

1. Front-wheel drive on the handle means a light weight car, which means low fuel consumption. On the highway (dry asphalt) consumption dropped to 5.4 liters per hundred (AI-92), in the city no more than 7 liters, beauty. 2. The noise is moderate, the suspension works great, even with the beam in the car it doesn’t shake too much. 3. Cruise control - I got to know it, it turns out it helps a lot on the highway. 4. Heating of the windshield, all seats and steering wheel - very useful options in winter. 5. Visibility from the mirrors and from the front - I sit high, I look far away. 6. High ground clearance - you can drive over curbs and drive along deep ruts. 7. Headlights - lenses and fog lamps, dimensions - LED strip - in general the light is not bad, it shines brightly. 8. Standard radio (touchscreen, 5 inches) - not bad sound, there is an MP3 and a Bluetooth phone for hands-free communication + steering wheel controls, a connector for a flash drive. 9. There are roof rails - all that remains is to purchase cross members (possibly boxing in the future). 10. There is a rear camera and parking sensors - I’m used to it the old fashioned way, I park using the mirrors. 11. A spacious niche under the trunk floor - I removed the standard foam from the spare tire and stuck in everything I needed. 12. The engine is a regular aspirated engine (the same as I had in my Kia Rio). 13. Comfortable armrest. 14. You can pour 92nd gasoline. I don’t think I’ll see a difference in consumption between 92 and 95. 15. Passengers in the back sit comfortably - their legs do not rest against the front seats, and their heads do not rest on the ceiling + there are 2 butt-heating modes. 16. There is a plastic boot on the bottom of the pallet and box - less dirt will fly in. 17. Keyless access - you quickly get used to the good stuff.

Flaws:

1. 2 extras are missing. frequency speakers in the front doors - I may install them in the future as a lover of loud music. 2. Oak plastic, scratches easily. 3. Spare wheel - stamping (at least the radius matches the wheels). 4. Standard tires 205Х65Х16 NEXTON - I’m not happy at all. Question: Why is the manufacturer Korean, but the tires on a Korean car are Chinese? And the alloy wheels are probably original too, I haven’t looked at them yet. Maybe someone knows the answer - write in the comments. 5. You cannot turn off the beeper (5 seconds) when you have started the engine, left the cabin and closed all the doors (does not see the key in the car and causes panic). 6. When the engine is running, the light never turns off completely (at least the lights are on). 7. There is no MUTE button on the steering wheel (turn off the sound), instead there is some kind of voice control, which does not go into any place. 8. There is no access to the fog lights - when they burn out, you will probably have to remove the wheel and fender liner to replace the light bulb. 9. There is no sun visor on the windshield (darkening tape). 10. We saved on a coat hook (it’s on only one side on the rear right door). 11. I think soon plastic crickets will appear, because it is very hard.
