Types of motor oils

The automotive industry uses several types of oils that are used as motor oils - mineral, synthetic, semi-synthetic and hydrocracking; they differ in the method of production and, as a result, have different compositions and properties.

Mineral oil produced by distillation and refining of crude oil, the advantages include the low price, but there are many more disadvantages - due to the high content of impurities (sulfur, etc.), such oils very quickly lose their properties and need to be changed more often. Mineral oils, in turn, are divided into aromatic, naphthenic and paraffinic oils; the latter usually act as a base oil since they have optimal viscosity and operating temperature parameters.

Synthetic motor oil produced by chemical synthesis of certain compounds that give the final product the necessary characteristics, it has significant advantages - high fluidity, resistance to extreme temperatures, long service life. The complex production process and significant advantages determine the high price of synthetic oils. Typically, synthetics are used under severe engine operating conditions.

Semi-synthetic motor oil obtained by mixing mineral and synthetic, this reduces the price and improves performance; such oils are best suited for moderately cold climates and medium loads. This category also includes oils obtained by hydrocracking; in simple terms, this is an improved mineral oil, the characteristics of which are close to semi-synthetic oils, but have a shorter service life. Sometimes hydrocracking oil is passed off as semi-synthetic, but more often confusion arises due to similar characteristics, so if you decide to purchase semi-synthetic oil, study the label and consult the seller.

Classifications of motor oils

Several oil classification systems are used in the world (SAE, API, ACEA, etc.), they use different parameters and symbols.

SAE (from English Association of Automotive Engineers) uses viscosity and fluidity indicators for classification, that is, the ability of an oil to form a film on rubbing surfaces and at the same time flow. According to the SAE J300 standard, motor oils are divided into winter (0W, 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W, 25W) and summer (20, 30, 40, 50). The combined designation 5W-40, 10W-50, etc., is given to all-season oils, and the fact that they are recommended for use at certain temperatures should not be considered an axiom.

The fact is that each engine is unique in its own way - it has a different thermal stress regime, boost, design and other features, so when choosing a specific oil, pay attention to the recommendation of the car manufacturer, usually in the operating instructions or the recommended oil for certain conditions is indicated, or a correspondence table is given with the brand of oil and the maximum temperatures at which it is recommended. ACEA (Association of European Automobile Manufacturers) classification divides motor oils depending on engine type:

  • A - oils for gasoline engines;

They can only be used if they are recommended by the manufacturer; in this case, their use is provided for by the design of the engine; they cannot be poured into a regular engine. When choosing, remember classes A1, A5, B1, B5 - energy-saving oils, and all others - A2, A3, B2, B3, B4, standard.

The API classification was developed by the American Petroleum Institute; the key parameters in it are the age of the car and the type of engine. The fact is that every improvement in engine design and its parameters increases the requirements for motor oils; the classification takes this point into account and allows you to select the optimal oil for each engine.

According to API, each oil receives a two-letter index, the first letter of which indicates the engine type, and the second the oil class. For example, SH or CF, the letter S means a gasoline engine, C means a diesel engine, the second letter means the oil class, currently the index J - only modern high-quality oils are received. This does not make oils with other indexes worse, but it does mean that they are better suited to older engines than to modern ones.

Since most manufacturers produce universal motor oils that are suitable for both gasoline and diesel engines, such oils are marked with both indices at once, for example - SF/CC.

Motor oil additives

Additives to motor oil help improve its lubricating, cleaning and other properties. As a rule, modern engine oil additives are universal and have a complex effect. Although there are highly specialized ones that affect one or more properties:

  • detergents;

  • depressants (to reduce viscosity at low temperatures);
  • to reduce foaming.
