Useful tips when using x trail t31. Weaknesses and disadvantages of the Nissan X-Trail Columbia (T31)

28.07.2016

Nissan X-Trail T31 (Nissan X-Trail) is the second generation of compact crossover produced by the Japanese corporation Nissan Motor. After the appearance of this model on sale, things went uphill for the Nissan company, since at that time few manufacturers could offer a lot of cars for reasonable money. Another advantage of the X-Trail over its competitors was the practicality of the car and good off-road capabilities - all-wheel drive, impressive ground clearance (20 cm), protective plastic linings on the wheel arches and sills. However, like most cars, the Nissan X-Trail 2 has not only advantages, but also a number of disadvantages, but let’s try to figure out what they are now.

A little history:

The debut of the Nissan X-Trail (T30) took place in 2000 at the Paris auto show; in the same year, mass production was launched and sales of the new model began in the domestic market of Japan. A year later, they began to export cars to Europe and other countries. Oddly enough, this generation of the model was never officially sold in the United States. The new product is based on the Nissan FF-S platform, which was originally used on the Nissan Primera and Almera sedans. The design of the new product was borrowed from the then popular Nissan Patrol SUV. Thanks to its practicality and unpretentiousness, the X-Trail is one of the most successful models ever created by Nissan, and one of the best-selling cars of its time in its class.

In 2003, the car underwent restyling, during which the front and rear bumpers and dashboard were changed. The modernization also affected the engine control units, automatic transmission, ABS and the catalyst (became metal). At the same time, exclusive versions of the Rider and AXIS cars appeared on sale, which differed from regular X-Trails in having different bumpers, a radiator grille, rims and improved interior trim. Production of the Nissan X-Trail (T30) was discontinued in most countries in 2007, and only in Taiwan the model was produced until 2009.

The Nissan X-Trail (T31) made its debut at the Geneva auto show in early 2007, and at the end of the same year the start of official sales was announced on the European market. Unlike the previous version, this generation of car was built on the Nissan C platform, borrowed from the one that debuted a year earlier. In addition to the platform, the new product acquired a modified exterior and interior design, and the technical equipment of the model was also improved. At the same time, Nissan began construction of a plant near St. Petersburg, and two years later the first Russian-assembled Nissan X-Trail rolled off the assembly line. In 2010, the model was modernized, during which the appearance of the car was slightly changed. The changes affected the radiator grille, bumper, front and rear optics and rims. The quality of interior materials has also been improved. Production of this generation was discontinued in 2014.

The presentation of the third generation Nissan X-Trail concept car, called Hi-Cross, took place in 2012 at the Geneva auto show. A year later, the production version of the car was officially presented. The new product is based on the new modular CMF platform, which has become common to most crossovers of the Renault-Nissan alliance. Externally, the new product is radically different from its predecessor, since the concept of a “brutal” SUV with angular body lines has been replaced by a more “progressive” urban style, in which most modern crossovers are made. Despite this, the company’s engineers decided not to completely abandon the former angularity and “chopping” in some lines. Also, during the change of generations, the interior design has undergone significant changes. In 2017, the model underwent modernization, after which the car received an appearance similar to the updated Nissan Qashqai.

Weaknesses of Nissan X-Trail 2 (T31) with mileage

Despite the fact that this model was positioned by the manufacturer as a brutal car for men, its paintwork is very delicate, which is why it quickly becomes covered with all kinds of scratches and chips. Chrome also suffers painfully from use in our realities - it becomes cloudy and swells after 3-4 winters. As for the protection of the body from corrosion, it is satisfactory, thanks to which the metal resists the onslaught of the rust disease well. However, there are still a couple of weak points here. Rust most quickly attacks exposed areas of metal. If chips are not touched up in a timely manner, the appearance of saffron milk caps in these places is inevitable. In vehicles used in megacities due to exposure to reagents, pockets of rust can also be found in hidden parts of the body - on the weld seams at the ends of the doors, in the corners of the additional brake light, in the drainage holes, on the thresholds in places of contact with the door seals.

The trunk lid also resists the onslaught of the red disease quite poorly - the metal begins to bloom most quickly in the area of the license plate and around the glass seal. Another disadvantage of the fifth door is the weak gas stops, which with the onset of cold weather do not always cope with its weight (the problem is solved by installing reinforced stops). Owners of the Nissan X-Trail (T31) also complain about the poor quality of the original windshield (poorly resistant to mechanical stress). Often, while driving, you can hear a creaking sound in the front part of the car; these sounds are produced by the aerodynamic pad under the windshield. To eliminate the defect, the lining can be placed on a sealant or an additional sealant can be glued. Over time, many copies developed problems with the operation of the windshield wipers (poor tinder). Reason: the wiper trapezoid bushing bursts (wears out). Treatment: replacing the bushing; if it is intact, it will be enough to place a washer of the required diameter under it.

Due to the poor geometry of the body, the rear bumper quite often suffers when driving off-road, the replacement of which will significantly hit your pocket (about $150). Door handles can also present unpleasant surprises - the cables fly off due to weak fastening. Most often, the problem occurs in winter on restyled copies. A special feature of the trunk is an organizer hidden under the main floor, in which you can hide a barbecue, fishing rods and other necessary things. The disadvantage of this floor is that if you need a spare tire, you will have to work hard to disassemble this organizer.

Power units

The Nissan X-Trail (T31) line of power units includes two naturally aspirated petrol fours of 2.0 (MR20DE 140 hp) and 2.5 liters (QR25DE 169 hp), and a two-liter turbodiesel of varying degrees of boost (M9R 150 and 173 hp). The main problem with gasoline engines is an increased oil appetite (more than 0.5 liters per 1000 km). Consumption of more than 1 liter per 1000 km is usually the result of stuck piston rings (this problem appears after a mileage of over 150,000 km). Repairs cost almost 500 USD. - replacement of rings and valve stem seals. Also not famous for their reliability are the timing chain (stretches closer to 150,000 km), the fuel level sensor (there are two of them - one on the fuel pump, the second is installed separately) and ignition coils. The disadvantages include fairly high fuel consumption. When installing gas equipment, it is necessary to adapt the engine to run on gas - increasing the thermal clearances of the valves and installing other glasses. If this is not done, after a short run the valve seats and the valves themselves will burn out.

The weakest unit is prone to overheating, so it is necessary to clean the cooling radiator at least once a year. Important: overheating often causes warping of the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and head. It is also worth noting the unreliability of the thermistor, which is built into the mass air flow sensor. If the sensor malfunctions, incorrect data (most often overestimated by 50%) is transmitted to the engine control unit, which causes it to limit the fuel supply, which leads to a significant reduction in traction. When replacing spark plugs, it is advisable to use a torque wrench, since due to the thin-walled partition separating the spark plug wells from the cooling jacket, there is a high probability of cracks appearing (recommended tightening torque is 15-20 Nm). A fairly common problem is oil leakage through the oil pan seal and antifreeze through all possible and impossible channels. Other common troubles include unstable idling (can be solved by cleaning the throttle valve), short service life of the rear support, increased noise (valve adjustment required) and whistling alternator belt.

In a 2.5-liter engine, the phase regulator, oil pump and thermostat are not reliable. Quite often, due to loss of tightness (oil leaks appear), the valve cover gasket has to be changed. If you do not periodically clean the injectors and throttle, over time the engine will begin to operate unstably (troits, speed fluctuates). Another problem with this unit is poor software, which can cause the motor to vibrate strongly. The problem is solved by flashing the ECU. It is worth noting that this engine is afraid of low temperatures and is capricious in severe frosts (over -20). In addition, driving an unheated engine in severe frost leads to accelerated wear of the catalyst with destruction products (ceramic dust) entering the cylinders. The reason is that there is an overflow of fuel, which burns out in the catalyst.

Diesel

A diesel unit is the most interesting option to purchase due to its reliability, efficiency and excellent dynamic characteristics, but, unfortunately, on the secondary market, a Nissan X-Trail with such an engine is a rarity. Among the weak points of the unit, one can highlight the unreliability of the timing chain (it stretches over a mileage of 120-150 thousand km). When using low-quality diesel fuel, the piezo injectors of the Bosch fuel system wear out quite quickly (they often jam, the return valve periodically gets clogged, it is worth noting that changing them is quite problematic), the injection pump, the EGR valve (cleaning helps to bring it back to life) and the DPF filter. Among the less common troubles, we can highlight such a problem as crankshaft liners cranking, caused by a decrease in the performance of the oil pump (clogged with sludge). The turbine serves more than 300 thousand km. With timely maintenance (oil change every 7-10 thousand km), the engine life will exceed 350,000 km.

Transmission

For the Nissan X-Trail (T31), three types of gearboxes were available: 6-speed manual and automatic, and CVT. Most often on the secondary market you can find cars with a Jatco JF011E/RE0F10A variator. This transmission operates without any particular complaints for about 200,000 km, but only subject to timely maintenance (replacing Nissan CVT Fluid NS-2 working fluid every 50-60 thousand km) and careful operation. It is necessary to avoid frequent slipping, sudden starts at traffic lights, prolonged driving at high speed, and it is also not recommended to tow a heavy trailer. If you delay changing the oil, over time wear products will jam the oil pump pressure relief valve. This problem entails oil starvation and accelerated wear of the unit.

Among the weak points of the variator, we can note the bearings of the drive and driven shafts, which can hum at a mileage of 120-150 thousand km. At the same mileage, problems also occur with the drive belt (replacement costs $150-200). If the belt is not replaced in a timely manner, you will have to fork out money for cone pulleys in the future. Before purchasing, be sure to check the variator in operation; it is important that during acceleration there are no twitches or sluggish response to pressing the gas pedal, as these are the first signs of the transmission’s imminent demise.

The mechanics have also proven themselves to be quite reliable. The only thing that has to be done periodically here is to change the clutch and release bearing - on average once every 150,000 km. Often the dual-mass flywheel has to be replaced at the same time as the clutch. On some copies produced after 2010, over time, problems arose with the driven disc (factory defect), because of this the clutch needed to be replaced after 50,000 km. Nothing bad can be said about the Jatco JF613E automatic transmission; with regular oil changes (every 60,000 km) and careful operation, this transmission can last up to 250-300 thousand km without repairs.

Four-wheel drive

The reliability of the All Mode 4×4 all-wheel drive transmission largely depends on the quality of service and operating conditions of the vehicle. If the owner understands that the Nissan X-Trail (T31) is a crossover and not an SUV, you don’t have to worry about the reliability of the all-wheel drive, but if the car is regularly dipped in the mud, you need to be prepared for expensive repairs. For example, replacing the rear axle coupling will cost about $700. The driveshaft crosspieces are also considered quite vulnerable. If they are broken, the movement of the car will be accompanied by a hum, knocking and vibration. It is better to change the crosspieces in a specialized service, since after carrying out the work it is necessary to balance the shaft, and this cannot be done efficiently everywhere. The front intermediate drive shaft bearing may also start to hum quite early.

Reliability of suspension, steering and brakes Nissan X-Trail (T31)

On both axles, the second generation Nissan X-Trail uses an independent suspension with anti-roll bars: MacPherson strut at the front, multi-link at the rear. The chassis is quite soft and has good energy consumption, making it comfortable to drive the car not only on the highway, but also far beyond it. But as often happens, you have to pay for comfort with not the best handling - when driving over bumps at high speed, the car sways strongly, and unpleasant body roll occurs in turns.

The weak point of the front suspension is the support bearings; on average, their service life is 60-80 thousand km; on pre-restyling Nissan X-Trail, the bearings often wore out without serving even 30,000 km. Stabilizer struts and bushings can last up to 40-60 thousand km (to replace the latter, the subframe will have to be lowered). Wheel bearings, ball joints and subframe silent blocks last 90-120 thousand km. The front shock absorbers can withstand approximately the same amount of time; the rear shock absorbers can last up to 150,000 km. When replacing, shock absorbers from Renault Koleos can be used as analogues (they are cheaper). With careful use, the rear suspension arms last 150-200 thousand km.

The steering system uses an electric power rack. As operating experience has shown, the rack is quite reliable - the service life is about 150,000 km. But the steering shaft driveshafts can begin to bother you with extraneous sounds (creaking, knocking) without having lasted even 100,000 km. Silicone grease or installing clamps helps to temporarily solve the problem, but in the future, you will still have to change the shaft. The braking system is also reliable, but on cars whose owners love to conquer all kinds of fords, the ABS unit fails quite early.

The Nissan X-Trail (T31) uses a lot of hard plastic, because of this, over the years, the interior is filled with all sorts of sounds (creaking, knocking, etc.). Also, extraneous sounds may come from the 5th door. Disadvantages include poor sound insulation. The weak point of the interior electrical equipment is the heating system, for example the motor needs to be replaced after 3 years of operation, and closer to 150,000 km you need to be prepared to replace the air conditioning compressor. A fairly common problem is chafing of control wires and cables located on the steering wheel, breakage of controllers and buttons. Over time, the amplifier located at the base of the antenna oxidizes, causing the reception of radio stations to deteriorate.

Result:

The Nissan X-Trail (T31) is a real bestseller among SUVs on the secondary market, since for relatively little money the buyer receives a comfortable and fairly reliable car with good off-road capabilities. Of course, this is not a full-fledged SUV, but when compared with its competitors, this model has the best cross-country ability. X-Trail can be safely recommended to family car enthusiasts, picnic lovers outside the city, summer residents, hunters, fishermen and other outdoor enthusiasts. The best option for purchasing is considered to be a diesel car with a classic automatic transmission, but, unfortunately, such cars are very rare for our market.

If you are or were the owner of this car brand, please share your experience, indicating the strengths and weaknesses of the car. Perhaps your review will help others choose a used car.

The x trail has not been in production for very long - since 2000. During this period, the concern managed to present two generations of the car, although the new Nissan X Trail is not too different from the first. But there are enough reviews of this model, but what about its daily use?

Several opinions about the appearance and interior

The appearance of the X Trail received high marks from drivers: the first generation for its interesting and quite advanced appearance, the second - primarily for its modified headlights.

“I like his appearance, nothing superfluous, everything is neat and clear.”

But the interior of the first generation Nissan X Trail is of greatest interest to owners, because its dashboard is located in the central part of the dashboard. Car enthusiasts note the inconvenience of this solution, because they have to constantly be distracted by searching for the panel during the initial stages of getting used to it. Otherwise, the owners speak positively about the salon:

  • The finish was praised for being durable and neat;
  • there is enough space inside for everyone to fit comfortably;
  • It’s very good, our compatriots say, that the x trail has a large number of all kinds of drawers, pockets and niches.

At the same time, the first-generation interior received negative characteristics for insufficient seat support. And, as if hearing the opinions of Russian drivers, the Japanese concern changed the interior when creating the second generation. Those who were able to compare both models say that:

  • there are many more adjustments for the front seats;
  • all seats finally received good lateral support;
  • the geometry of each seat has changed for the better, thanks to which long trips in this car do not seem tiring at all;
  • the instrument panel returned to its usual place;
  • a glove box appeared with the functions of a refrigerator and thermos as standard.

Motorists separately highlight the luggage compartment, which is characterized, in their opinion, by sufficient volume (for the second generation it is 603 liters, and with the seats folded down it is 1773), a convenient opening and a two-level floor. Here, experienced owners turn their attention to the drawer under the floor: its coating was chosen very well - non-slip, easy to clean.

Engines: their pros and cons

The first generation x trail is available with the following units:

  1. 2.5-liter 165-horsepower gasoline engine;
  2. 140-horsepower 2.0-liter gasoline;
  3. 2.2-liter turbodiesel with a power of 116 hp, equipped with an excellent cooling system.

Petrol variants are equipped with either a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission, while the diesel is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission.

For the second generation, the same gasoline engines and a new diesel engine are available in two versions:

4. 150 horsepower in combination with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and 173 horsepower in combination with a manual transmission.

The best engine, in the opinion of our car enthusiasts, is the 2.5-liter, since it is its power that is sufficient for the car in full. On the other hand, not everyone is satisfied with the consumption of this engine: up to 14.5 liters in the city in winter.

But in general, the 2.5 liter engine is unpretentious, efficient and very easy to operate. Plus, it works great in almost any conditions. The only problem with daily use of a car can arise with the variator: as drivers say, in traffic jams it heats up, and therefore the automatic selector gives an error. As a result, the car begins to respond sluggishly to pressing the accelerator pedal. The solution to this problem can be changing the oil in the box and cleaning the sensor contacts.

How does it behave on the road?

Both generations of the X-Trail are equipped with an electronic all-wheel drive system, which under normal conditions operates only as a front-wheel drive system. The system provides three operating modes, giving the driver the ability to lock the center clutch.

“It’s very helpful that the car has several drive modes. It’s also great that the front wheel drive is always working: all-wheel drive is not needed so often.”

Motorists speak very highly of the performance of all-wheel drive, as well as all related systems:

  • the car feels confident on slippery surfaces;
  • high ground clearance provides a great service in winter, and also solves the parking problem;
  • The stabilization system performs its functions flawlessly.

But if we talk about a first-generation car, then new owners may be in for an unpleasant surprise - noise from the rear. Initially, you might think that the reason for this is poor noise insulation, but, as the experience of using Nissans by our compatriots has shown, in this case we are talking about the “fragility” of the rear-wheel drive gearbox. Although in some cases the noise is caused by wheel bearings.

Final conclusion and cost

If we talk about this car as a whole, it has no serious shortcomings. This is confirmed by all owners without exception. The only noticeable disadvantage of the Nissan X Trail is the price of maintenance. Drivers say that every odd maintenance costs a lot of money if they are serviced in full. However, car care is a personal matter for each owner.

If you decide to purchase a new 2013 Nissan X Trail, it will cost you approximately 1,300,000 for a model with average equipment. Motorists say that the car is worth the money.

Nissan X-Trail (T31) is the second generation of crossover, which debuted on the world market in 2007. When developing the car, the front-wheel drive Nissan-C Platform, which is a joint development of the Renault-Nissan alliance, was taken as a basis. This model combines the advantages of an SUV and a regular passenger car, thanks to which it has become one of the best-selling cars among its classmates. In most countries, sales of the X-Trail (T31) were discontinued in 2013, but domestic car enthusiasts were luckier - in our country, the second generation X-Trail lasted on the market until 2015.

Common ailments and disadvantages of used Nissan X-Trail (T31)

Body:

paintwork- traditionally for models of this brand, the paintwork is not resistant to mechanical stress. As a result, most copies have a large number of various scratches and chips on the body.

Chromium- chrome body elements endure our winters painfully (they become cloudy), especially if the car is used in cities where the roads are generously sprinkled with chemicals.

Bodywork iron- the metal of the body is of good quality and is well protected from corrosion, however, due to the age of the car, certain problems do occur. Vulnerable areas include the tailgate, hood, drainage holes, door ends, sills (rust appears at the points of contact with the seals and under the protective lining) and the roof (in the area of the roof rails). Exposed areas of metal also become covered with rust quite quickly, so you shouldn’t leave chips unattended for a long time.

Fifth door- in addition to the tendency to corrosion, the weak points of the trunk lid include the unreliability of the shock absorbers: over time, they no longer hold the lid in the open position; as a rule, the disease begins to manifest itself in the cold season.

Vetrovoe glass- the hardness and wear resistance of the windshield are not great, which is why in many copies it is severely scratched and needs to be replaced after 3-5 years of operation. Often, dirt gets stuck under the outer lining of the windshield and it begins to make strange sounds while driving. The problem is solved by applying a sealant or installing an additional seal.

Windscreen wipers- the trapezoid bushings wear out quite quickly, which is why the wipers do their job poorly.

Bumper- there are no complaints about the quality of bumpers and their fastenings, however, for active recreation enthusiasts they can cause significant costs. The fact is that the body of the Nissan X-Trail (T31) does not have the proper geometry for confident movement on bumpy roads, which is why the bumpers, especially the rear ones, often suffer.

Motor reliability

The main problem with gasoline engines is excessive oil appetite. For cars with a mileage of 150-200 thousand km, oil consumption can be 5-7 liters per 10,000 km. There is only one solution to this problem - replacing the valve stem seals and rings. The timing chain often fails - it can stretch out without even serving 150,000 km. Problem areas also include loss of tightness of the front engine cover after 100,000 km, short service life of fuel level sensors (oxidation appears on the sensor) and ignition coils. Another disadvantage of these engines is increased fuel consumption. Many owners install gas-cylinder equipment to save money, but do not adapt the timing of the unit to run on gas (it is necessary to increase the thermal clearances of the valves and replace the glasses), because of this, over time they face serious problems - burnout of the valves and their seats, catalyst wear accelerates.

MR20DE- Among the weak points of the two-liter engine, it is worth highlighting the unreliability of the seals of the oil pan and the front cover, as well as weak connections of the cooling system pipes (they leak antifreeze). The rear engine mount and the thermistor have a rather modest service life; if it malfunctions, the engine ECU receives incorrect data and reduces the amount of fuel supplied to the engine (manifested by a decrease in traction). Among the less significant ailments, it is worth noting the rapid contamination of the throttle valve (manifested by unstable idling) and excessive noise of the unit (adjusting the valve clearances helps to correct the situation a little). This unit has thin partitions that separate the spark plug wells from the cooling jacket, therefore, when replacing spark plugs, it is recommended to use a torque wrench, since when the tightening torque (20 Nm) is exceeded, microcracks appear on the threads, as a result, antifreeze begins to get into the spark plug wells. In addition, this unit painfully tolerates even a slight increase in temperature from the norm - when it overheats, it causes damage to the cylinder head and block.

QR25DE- for the 2.5-liter unit, the thermostat, oil pump and phase regulator are considered problematic. It can also be noted that the engine is poorly adapted to work in harsh climates (-20 or more) - difficulties arise with starting and smooth operation. When operating a car with an insufficiently warmed-up engine, fuel overflows, the excess of which burns out in the catalyst, accelerating its wear (if the catalyst is destroyed, its particles enter the cylinders). Regular use of low-quality gasoline leads to rapid contamination of the fuel injectors and throttle, as a result of which the engine may stall and operate unstably.

Diesel— the main disadvantage of a diesel engine is the short life of the gas distribution chain (rarely withstands more than 150,000 km). It is worth noting the sensitivity of the unit to the quality of the fuel - the use of diesel fuel from a “canister” leads to early failure of the injection pump (high pressure pump), EGR valve, DPF filter and fuel injectors. After 200-250 thousand kilometers, due to severe contamination, the performance of the oil pump decreases. If you do not follow this, there is a risk of turning the crankshaft liners. Most service providers recommend not washing the unit unless absolutely necessary. The fact is that during washing, water gets between the fuel injectors and the cylinder head, causing electrochemical corrosion, which reduces the life of the injectors and causes many problems when replacing them. With proper maintenance and operation, the engine can last 350-400 thousand km.

Transmission weaknesses

Mechanics- the manual transmission has exemplary reliability, and if any problems arise, they are usually caused by natural wear of parts. Among the costs for a manual transmission, we can highlight the replacement of the clutch kit, which, under moderate loads, lasts 140-160 thousand km. Closer to 200,000 km, the dual-mass flywheel needs to be replaced.

Variable speed drive- the service life of this type of transmission largely depends on its operating mode and quality of service. So, for example, under moderate loads and using only original Nissan CVT Fluid NS-2 lubricant with a replacement interval of 50-60 thousand km, the variator can last up to 250,000 km without repair. For those who like to save on maintenance, the gearbox may require significant repairs after 120-150 thousand km. As a rule, the following need to be replaced: belt, step motor, shaft bearings, high-pressure pump valve (sticks, resulting in oil starvation) and solenoids. Restoring the transmission's functionality costs 1000-1500 USD. It is worth noting that even after professional repair, the variator on average lasts about 100,000 km.

Automatic transmission- this gearbox was installed only in tandem with a diesel engine. With systematic oil renewal (every 60,000 km) and gentle operation, the machine will not need repairs up to 300,000 km. If you drive aggressively, you need to change the lubricant in the gearbox more often, since under heavy loads the torque converter locking friction linings wear out faster than usual, and their wear products get into the oil and spread throughout the entire gearbox. If dirty oil is not changed for a long time, the service life of the solenoids and valve body will decrease, and oil leaks will appear through the seals of the torque converter pump.

Full drive unit

The car uses an All Mode 4×4 all-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled center clutch. If you do not abuse the off-road capabilities of the crossover, and they are at a fairly high level here, compared to many competitors, there should not be any significant problems with the all-wheel drive transmission. The only vulnerable points include the cardan shaft crosspieces (after replacement, balancing of the cardan shaft is required) and the front intermediate drive shaft bearing - on average they can withstand 100-150 thousand km. If you often conquer off-road conditions, you should not count on a long service life of the clutch.

Reliability of Nissan X-Trail (T31) chassis

Structurally, the chassis of the second generation Nissan X-Trail is similar to its predecessor - McPherson struts are used on the front axle, and a multi-link is used on the rear axle. Some front-wheel drive vehicles have a torsion beam on the rear axle. The chassis has a high level of comfort, which negatively affected the reliability of some elements and the car’s handling (body roll is felt during active driving). The most vulnerable here are the support bearings, the lower bushings of the rear shock absorbers, silent blocks and ball front arms (they last 70-100 thousand km). Also among the disadvantages is the need to remove the subframe to replace the front stabilizer bushings (lifetime 60-80 thousand km).

Average resource of original suspension parts:

  • Stabilizer struts: front - 30-50 thousand km, rear - 50-70 thousand km
  • Shock absorbers: front - 100-120 thousand km, rear - up to 150,000 km
  • Wheel bearings - 100-150 thousand km (changed along with the hub)
  • Subframe silent blocks 150-200 thousand km
  • Multi-link elements can withstand up to 200,000 km.

Steering control- a rack and pinion mechanism with electric power steering is used here. This mechanism has a satisfactory level of reliability. Among the main ailments, one can note only periodic malfunctions in the operation of the electric amplifier (usually in winter) and a weak steering shaft driveshaft (knocks and creaks; most often, the fight against this ailment comes down to the use of silicone grease on the steering gear seals). In most cases, the rack can withstand about 200,000 km. Tie rod ends last 120-150 thousand km, rods can last 150-200 thousand km.

Brakes- there are no special complaints about the reliability of the braking system. After storming fords and other mud baths, it may be necessary to replace the ABS unit (it has an unfortunate location).

Salon and equipment

Salon- the interior of this generation of the model is not without refinements, however, most of the decorative panels are made of cheap hard plastic, which over the years fills the interior with extraneous sounds. Owners of the Nissan X-Trail (T31) often complain about the low level of sound insulation. With the onset of cold weather, the cables of the internal door handles leading to the lock drive may slip from their fixation points, as a result the door will not open from the inside.

Equipment- the main troubles with interior equipment are related to the car’s climate system. For example, the heater fan motor (service life is 3-5 years), the air conditioning compressor and its electromagnetic clutch are not reliable (they become unusable after a mileage of 150-200 thousand kilometers). Also problematic are the cables of the audio system, cruise control, speakerphone located on the steering wheel (they are frayed), controllers and control buttons for interior equipment. If the quality of radio signal reception decreases, it is worth checking the condition of the amplifier located at the base of the antenna (it is oxidizing). Owners often complain about the excessive sensitivity of standard parking sensors.

Let's summarize

The second generation Nissan X-Trail has an acceptable level of reliability, making it a rather interesting proposition on the secondary market. Despite its good off-road capabilities, this model should not be regarded as an SUV. Among the obvious disadvantages of the car, one can highlight the demanding quality of service, the cost of which is often more expensive than that of many competitors.

If you have experience operating this car model, please tell us what problems and difficulties you encountered. Perhaps your review will help the readers of our site when choosing a car.

There are no invulnerable cars, no matter what advertising might have us believe. Each mechanism has problems and shortcomings, specific “sores”. A car is a collection of a huge number of mechanisms and everything that spins, rubs, switches, rotates, and comes into contact with the external environment is subject to deformation and is potentially vulnerable. Nissan X-Trail is no exception. To be fair, we note that Lexuses, Porsches, and Mercedes are no less vulnerable and have their own disadvantages, pros and cons.

Until 2009, all Nissans were imported from Japan. After the opening of assembly production at the plant in Shushary near St. Petersburg, the flow of imported cars in the European part of Russia sharply decreased, and locally assembled Nissan supplies appeared. Supplies from Japan are relevant for Siberia and the Far East, where even right-hand drive versions are often found.

Versions and improvements

When buying a used car, especially one as expensive as the Nissan X-Trail, you need to understand that many components are worn out, and no one will replace expensive parts beyond the necessary pre-sale preparation. Let's look at the Nissan Xtrail pros and cons in order to navigate the secondary market.

The weaknesses of the Nissan X-Trail were consistently worked out by designers, engineers and designers. The shortcomings of previous versions are eliminated quite quickly. Only a car cast entirely from titanium and launched into orbit, beyond the atmosphere, can be invulnerable.

Ixtrail has an incredible number of modifications and restylings. Cars Nissan X-Trail T30: 2001, 2003; : 2007, 2010; : 2015 - differ from each other quite significantly. The car of the first wave was progressive for its class, but the interior decoration was frankly simple. Restyling 2003 was carried out according to the requirements of consumers, for whom a line of wishes was specially opened. In 2007, the shortcomings of the control systems were eliminated, the CVTs, interior, and trunk were improved.

The most popular version on the secondary market was the 2007 version. This is due to the relatively low price and the presence of basic technical innovations. Besides everything that could be broken has already been broken and replaced, Accordingly, with skillful choice and a certain amount of luck, you won’t have to invest in expensive repairs immediately after purchasing a car.

Modern shortcomings and shortcomings of the Nissan X-Trail T31 according to car owners:

The washer reservoir is a simple plastic container with tubes

1 Lack of washer reservoir level indicator

You can understand that the liquid has run out only by the absence of splashing on the glass... And this can lead to the fact that the pump that pumps the washer will deteriorate - it is not intended to work “dry”.

2 Unreliable fuel level sensor

Ixtrail has two of them. One is on the fuel pump, the other is separate. Usually the "separate" sensor is to blame. From constant contact with our “high-quality” fuel, contacts with all the consequences oxidize. You can clean it with a simple “cotton swab + solvent” kit.

Illuminated buttons on the driver's door in the dark

3 Driver's door buttons do not light up properly

In particular, the power windows are not illuminated. It would be possible to make the lighting not from the side, but from the inside...

Nissan X-Trail trunk curtain

4 Inconvenient trunk curtain

Tablecloth class. Something more practical could have been done.

Gas stop for the fifth door Nissan X-Trail

5 Weak fifth door stops

Nissan X-Trail gas struts do not always cope with the heavy fifth door. This is especially noticeable in cold weather and frost.

Operational problems

Relatively serious problems with the Nissan X-Trail begin after a year of use. Rust appears on the 5th door, which was slammed several times. Problems with the paintwork on the roof may occur, especially if you happen to drive through the bushes and do not notice small scratches that appear. Problems arise related to insufficiently careful handling, testing of extreme vehicle modes, and testing of capabilities.

Problems with wiring and abrasion of cables

From operating practice, it is quite obvious that all moving parts are subject to increased wear. As for the wires and cables laid in moving mechanisms, they also wear out, wear out, the insulation deteriorates, the wiring shorts out, the wires break and fray, and the microcircuits fail.

Traditional problems with car electronics; This is abrasion of control wires, cables, breakdown of controllers and buttons. What can we say if, even in old VAZs, the brake lights and turn signals fail, and on the left side, where the driver’s door provides additional mechanical stress on the wires. So, in the Nissan X-Trail, part of the control wire systems, buttons and cables are located on the steering wheel. Audio system, cruise control, and speakerphone cables located on rotating elements are subject to abrasion.

Right front door wiring

In the hands of a competent electrician, the problem with cables can be easily eliminated. If there is no competent electrician, or the abrasion of the loops is catastrophic, that is, not “a little insulation”, but “in rags,” repair and replacement of the control loops will cost tens of thousands of rubles.

The electric seat adjustment drives of the Nissan X-Trail are also weak points due to increased mobility. This especially applies to the driver's seat. Wear and tear of electrical circuits and cables is inevitable. And in the case of the Nissan X-Trail, a significant part of the electrics is located in moving parts, which increases wear many times over.

In addition to direct mechanical impact, there is the problem of condensation of excess moisture, difficult temperature conditions, strong heating near the rubbing parts of the mechanism, and unreliable protection of some components from dirt.

Sensors

Sensors that transmit data incorrectly are serious shortcomings of the Nissan X-Trail from the very first to the latest models. Quite often this is a problem for a car owner who does not want to spend extra money on replacing a combined unit. By the way, there are a decent number of combined units in the Nissan X-Trail.

Open type resistor sensor: contacts constantly float in fuel

Fuel sensors. Ixtrail has two of them. The contacts of the fuel gauge become stuck, clogged and oxidized; for this reason, the sensor readings are not very accurate. In this case, it is pointless to measure the pros and cons of the car.

Fuel level sensor, which is combined with a fuel pump

The problem can be solved in the usual way by simply cleaning the boards. The “right” filter is no problem, but the “left” one is combined with the fuel pump. Replacement will cost more than 10,000 rubles. For this reason, many drivers limit themselves to cleaning the right one, which does not contribute to the efficient operation of the level indicator.

In extreme conditions, which according to the Nissan X-Trail regulations include sub-zero temperatures, components must be replaced more often.

The same applies to the oil filter.

Expensive components

Cheap repairs for the Nissan X-Trail are impossible in principle. When considering the pros and cons of the Nissan X Trail, it is necessary to note expensive components for which replacement is recommended at the end of their service life.

This applies to scheduled work on the CVT transmission. Most CVTs use special CVT Fluid NS‑2 oil, which is more expensive than regular transmission fluid. The oil filter, which must be changed simultaneously with the oil change, has additional functions and costs a decent amount. It is recommended to change the oil 2 times a year, which is approximately 32 thousand annually. In case of problems with the variator, and they arise due to incorrect user actions, an unscheduled oil change may be supplemented by changing the belt and grinding the pulleys.

Technical shortcomings

Minor problems with the Nissan X-Trail, especially those purchased on the secondary market, are very unpleasant for the driver - these are plastic rattling parts in the cabin, as they are called “crickets”. The driver's problem is that by getting used to not paying attention to small clicking and creaking noises, you can miss a serious problem. The howl of the variator, of course, cannot be confused with anything, but it’s easy to miss the clicking and tapping of the steering rack.

Let's list the most vulnerable places of the Nissan X-Trail in terms of unexpected squeaks:

  • On the outside there is a panel above the wipers. By the way, if cold weather is approaching, it is advisable to replace the standard wipers immediately; they are often made of rubber, which is not sufficiently resistant to frost. A nasty grinding sound on glass instead of soft sliding can be an unpleasant surprise.
  • Center console.
  • Heating system. The motor in it whistles and clicks, which will have to be replaced over time.
  • The seats, although of the latest type and stuffed with electronics, after 2-3 years squeak almost like a grandmother’s spring sofa. This is, in principle, normal. None of the drivers complain about the seats and everyone finds the adjustment system very convenient. And they simply get used to the creaking and are surprised when strangers, for example, when selling a car, pay attention to the rather loud creaking.

The Nissan X-Trail is not the cheapest car and requires considerable investment in monthly maintenance; filters need to be changed in accordance with the maintenance schedule, regardless of cost.

With proper driving and regular maintenance, the new Nissan X-Trail will not cause problems.

Disadvantages of Nissan X-Trail video

Nissan X-Trail (T31) – produced from 2007 to 2014, this is the second generation of the car. Overall, a Japanese and moderately reliable car. The body does not immediately rust, regardless of assembly. Cars produced before 2009 were assembled in Japan, and after 2009, these cars began to be assembled at a plant near St. Petersburg. In general, the paintwork is durable, but if chips appear, they must be painted over immediately to prevent rust from appearing. Corrosion appears on the trunk door after only 3 years. The area near the number plate begins to bloom first. Many cars had their trunk doors repainted under warranty.

The rear bumper can easily be damaged when driving off-road. A new rear bumper costs $170. The windshield has to be replaced because it is not particularly strong and can crack even from road stones; it costs $300. Dirt accumulates between the frill and the windshield, which will lead to squeaks, but you can use sealant or an additional seal to get rid of this problem.

There are also some nuances with doors: it happens that the cables fly off from the external or internal handles, because the fastenings of these cables are not very reliable. This problem is especially relevant in winter on cars manufactured from 2009 to 2014. Dealers even launched a service company that sealed this unit. There are cases that the fuel level indicator shows incorrect data, because after 7 years of operation the sensor board oxidizes. But you can wipe this board with alcohol and the problem will disappear for a while.

After 5 years of service, the stove fan motor may begin to make noise; if it is not replaced, it will begin to whistle; a new motor of this type costs $130. There are times when the buttons on the steering wheel suddenly stop working, but this happens no earlier than after 100,000 km. mileage The fault is the wiring cable; if you change it, the buttons will work again; a new cable like this costs $150.

Motors

In most cases, the Nissan X-Trail is equipped with a 2-liter MR20DE gasoline power unit made of aluminum and uses a timing chain. The same engine is also installed on the Nissan Qashqai. After 100,000 km. mileage, you need to adjust the valves, selecting the height of the pushers, because there are no hydraulic compensators here.

The 2-liter engine can sometimes have problems, especially on older cars. Increased oil consumption was noticed on 2008 cars because the engine had defective pistons. They should have been replaced under warranty. If it has been noticed that the amount of coolant is decreasing, then the first thing you need to check is the thermostat sealing ring and the expansion tank; it happens that it may become leaky at the joint; a new tank will cost $30. You also need to change the spark plugs carefully so as not to overtighten, because the wall of the spark plug well may burst, after which the engine will begin to trim, and antifreeze will enter the cylinders, and exhaust gases will enter the cooling system. Because of such a trifle, you will have to change the cylinder head, which costs $1,200.

In addition, the motor mounts last no longer than 100,000 km, and they cost about $50. If the support fails, vibration will appear on the body. If you do not flush the throttle valve every 50,000 km, floating idle speed may appear and power will be lost. The timing chain will begin to stretch after 150,000 km. So it's best not to let it stretch and replace it for $70. If you start this thing, then one day the engine will give an error and will not start.

After approximately 170,000 km. mileage, the engine begins to consume more oil - approximately 0.5 liters per 1000 km. The cause may be stuck rings in the piston grooves. They can be replaced; a new set of rings costs $80. But if the cylinder walls are worn out, then such easy expenses cannot be avoided. The cylinder walls can wear out this way if the engine overheats. So you'll just have to add oil, because a new aluminum block costs about $2,000.

In addition, engines begin to eat oil for another reason, this happens after 80,000 km, oil flows out at the junction of the block and the pan. Retightening the bolts may help. But in most cases, it is necessary to change the sealant in the block, which is located there instead of the gasket. On cars produced before restyling, it was often the case that the rear seats began to smell of gasoline, which means that the sealing ring of the fuel level sensor or fuel pump was damaged. In 2009, there was a service campaign to replace the seals on this occasion.

A new pump costs $180, it has a filter installed that is designed to last the entire life of the pump, but it still sometimes happens that this filter gets clogged, so to change it, you will have to remove the fuel pump. A sign that the filter needs to be changed is that the engine begins to choke even though the car has a full tank. To prevent such troubles from arising, it is necessary for prevention once every 60,000 km. clean the fuel filter.

The diesel version of the X-Trail is quite rare, only 5% of cars have a diesel engine. This M9R turbocharged diesel engine is a joint development between Nissan and Renault, volume – 2 liters, model 2005. In general, the motor is reliable if you do not spin it to the cutoff. In 2013, this engine was modified, the engine ECU was reflashed, and the maximum speed was reduced. Also, you should not drive too fast and keep the car idling for a long time; if you often drive through city traffic jams, the particulate filter will become clogged. Therefore, it is advisable to flush the recirculation system every 60,000 km, then it will be possible to preserve the USR valve, which is not cheap - $280.

In addition, the return line of the fuel system also requires attention, because in cold weather plastic tubes can burst and fuel can get into the exhaust manifold; the smell of fried diesel fuel in the cabin will indicate this. The Bosch high-pressure pump and converter cannot tolerate low-quality fuel. These spare parts are quite expensive, it is better to refuel only with high-quality fuel. The injectors are also quite expensive - $300 each - and they don't like cleaning the engine. If water gets between the injector body and the block head, this will lead to corrosion, after which they will fail, and will also become sour in their places and will be difficult to get out for replacement.

Transmission

The diesel engine is paired with a Jatco JF613E six-speed automatic transmission, which first appeared on many Mitsubishi models; this transmission was also installed on many other cars; it is considered one of the most reliable. The main thing is to simply change the oil in it once every 60,000 km, do not make sudden accelerations and do not get sick in traffic jams, sometimes you need to give the car a quick acceleration, then it will last at least 250,000 km without repairs. And after this run you will simply need to change the clutches and valve body with solenoids; this, of course, will not be cheap.

There is also a 6-speed manual transmission, which also has few problems, you just need to change the clutch every 150,000 km. The clutch kit costs $120. Some 2010 cars with a 2-liter gasoline engine had problems with the driven disc, so the clutch failed after 50,000 km.

There is also a Jatco JF011E/RE0F10A CVT transmission; it must be checked very carefully before purchasing, especially if it is paired with a 2.5-liter engine. But if you drive carefully and don’t intentionally kill the variator with sudden movements, then it will quietly serve for at least 200,000 km. But it happens that after 120,000 km. a hum may appear while driving, which means that the bearings of the drive and driven shafts, each of which costs $40, have already worn out. It also happens that there are problems with the drive belt; replacing it will cost $200. The main thing is not to forget that the CVT does not like sudden starts and driving through city traffic jams. The lower the speed, the greater the gear ratio, so the belt at this moment bends greatly and wears out quickly, and the variator also does not like it when the car hits the curb or immediately clings to the road after slipping.

Thanks to such situations, a belt that has turned leaves scratches on the pulleys. And the pulleys, in turn, chew on the belt, wearing out the belt teeth. During sharp acceleration, the CVT begins to slip, wear products appear, which can have a bad effect on the valve block, and the pressure of the working fluid may increase. To avoid problems with the gearbox, you need to change the oil more often. On cars after restyling in 2010, the CVT gearbox was already modified and the control program was changed.

And for those who have older cars, they also need to update the variator program or find out from the previous owner whether he did this. In 2012 there was a massive service campaign about this. In the same year, Nissan increased the warranty period for CVT gearboxes from 3 years or 100,000 km. up to 5 years and 150,000 km. If while driving you notice jolts during shifting, then you need to change the transmission oil as quickly as possible, this includes the branded Nissan CVT Fluid NS-2 oil, a total of 8 liters will be required, it will cost 110 dollars and a filter for 60.

As for the multi-plate clutch for connecting the rear axle, although it is expensive - $700, it does not cause any problems. Especially if you don’t drive heavily in off-road mud, because this clutch is poorly protected from sand and dust. You need to understand that the X-Trail is more of a SUV than an SUV.

Steering is carried out using a steering rack, which costs $450, but it usually does not wear out before 160,000 km, but the rods and ends fail at about 120,000 km. The rods cost $40 each, and the ends cost $60. The very first X-Trails, which were imported from Japan in 2008, were recalled because it was suspected that some vehicles did not have a steering gear needle bearing installed, which would lead to to loss of control in the future.

In 2009, they also modernized the steering system so that the steering shaft cardan, which costs $90, would not quickly fail. Only in 2011 was a problem discovered that the electric power steering control unit could turn off while driving, so the modules were replaced without any problems under warranty. The steering wheel creaking may appear when turning, this is due to the rubber seal of the steering shaft, it can be changed periodically, and also if the place where the creaking is heard is lubricated with silicone grease, then the problem with the creaking steering wheel will be solved. The front seats may also creak, and the rear sofa may rattle.

Suspension

In the previous generation Nissan X-Trail, many suspension elements were taken from Almera and Primera cars. And in the 2nd generation of the X-Trail, the suspension is the same as in the Nissan Qashqai. Therefore, their problems are approximately the same. Initially, the lower mounting of the rear shock absorbers was not a particularly successful design. It uses gas-oil shock absorbers, which cost $60. Cars before 2010 had an unpleasant noise due to a broken bushing. But after restyling, this problem was eliminated and the rear multi-link suspension began to serve for a long time. Silent blocks must be changed after 180,000 km, shock absorbers - after 90,000 km. The front ones also last about the same. Shock absorbers cost about $200. Bushings last 60,000 km, and stabilizer struts last 100,000 km. They cost little money.
