As for clothes and shoes, it is better to take them to a minimum. An exception can only be made for a child, because children often get dirty and tear their clothes. It’s also better to forget about expensive jewelry – they have no place on a trip.
Just in case, it is better to have some means of self-defense with you. For these purposes, pepper spray or a simple aerosol is suitable, which can be used if necessary. Also, experienced tourists often take with them a spotlight or a good powerful flashlight.
Finally, the condition of the car is important. Before your trip, have it inspected by a service center, and during the trip, make sure that fuel tank was always fully charged. However, in addition to vacations, we also have days off, and interesting routes await us, where we can go for 2 days by car and spend time excitingly and usefully. We have selected 10 of the most interesting places where you can go on vacation. The rating is based on an analysis of forums, groups in in social networks and search queries.
We took two regions as our starting point - Moscow and St. Petersburg and the region, since the largest number of motorists is concentrated in these regions. It will be easy for residents of other regions to adjust their route; perhaps it will be even easier for you to get to some of the places in this rating! So, you have several routes to choose from, from the immediate city surroundings for those who are not yet experienced enough in driving and do not risk going on long trips, to multi-day trips with overnight stays along the way. As they say, for every taste and budget!
1. St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg is the leader in the ranking - it is currently the most popular internal direction for traveling in Russia. In the summer, as well as at any time of the year, St. Petersburg is beautiful! There are many interesting museums, galleries and parks. During the summer, the city hosts popular music festivals and other cultural events. Motorists who travel to St. Petersburg from Moscow finally have a choice between traffic jams on the M-10 highway and the M-11 toll highway. Choice is always good. Whether to go the old fashioned way or pay but have a great ride - it’s up to you to decide!
If you choose toll road, this will significantly shorten the path. Currently, two sections have been launched: from the Moscow Ring Road to Solnechnogorsk and bypassing Vyshny Volochyok. On the M11 you can drive 110 km/h, there are parking lots and toilets, but it is difficult to get gas stations and food. And in Vyshny Volochyok on M-10 there is a McDonald's! There are alternative food options in the form of roadside cafes, but here you should rely on common sense and intuition. Closer to St. Petersburg, Nesty Oil gas stations appear on the highway; they offer delicious hot dogs, hamburgers, chocolate croissants and good coffee. There are also several Burger King restaurants along the highway. While you can drive fast on the M11 highway, be careful on the M10! Cameras are waiting in populated areas, and on the highway between the divider, in addition, there are mobile cameras and traffic police patrols. Generally speaking, it is difficult to drive the entire route without ever running into a fine. Once, the authors of this report strictly followed the signs, using cruise control... and still, at the end of the trip, they received a fine of 500 rubles for speeding! So be careful and don't get carried away if possible.
St. Petersburg will delight you with excellent infrastructure; there are many hotels and restaurants. In addition, motorists will be pleased with the roads - there is the high-speed Ring Road, the Western High-Speed Diameter, wide avenues, and embankments! Getting around the city by car is convenient and comfortable. In the city center, we advise you to be careful with parking and leave your car only in designated places, since St. Petersburg tow trucks are no less ferocious than those in the capital! There are paid parking lots in the center, not a bad option will leave the car in the hotel parking lot (if you choose this option) and walk around the city center on foot. And when you want to get out of town, get into your favorite car and take it for a spin! Where to go in St. Petersburg and what to see? 2. Gold ring
Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Suzdal and Ples - choose the route based on your preferences! You can start your trip along the Golden Ring from Pereslavl-Zalessky. The city is located just 130 kilometers from Moscow, making it convenient for a weekend trip. If you are planning a long trip around the Golden Ring by car, Pereslavl can be considered as one of the first cities where you can stop. You can get to Pereslavl along the M8 highway - Yaroslavl highway. After reconstruction, the highway turned into a real expressway with 5 lanes in each direction. True, the highway has been reconstructed only up to the village of Tarasovka, but further on the 2-lane highway allows you to drive quite comfortably.
After Pereslavl, you can route through Rostov and then to Yaroslavl or choose the direction to Suzdal and Vladimir. A trip to Pereslavl is a matter of 1-2 days, then you need to plan a longer trip. It will take a week to cover all the cities of the Golden Ring if you want to pay enough attention to the sights.
Pereslavl-Zalessky
Pereslavl is one of the small cities on the Golden Ring route, but it is a city with a great historical heritage. There are several large monasteries and churches in Pereslavl, the city is located near the beautiful lake “Pleshcheyevo”. Strong winds often blow on Lake Pleshcheyevo, which makes it attractive for surfers and kiters.
On the southwestern shore of the lake there is a unique park-reserve “Pleshcheyevo Lake”. The boat of Peter I will be one of the first attractions of Pereslavl that you will meet on the way; it is worth starting educational excursions with it.
Only the hull of Peter the Great’s boat “Fortune” has been well preserved to this day. You can get close to the bot and study its structure.
Yaroslavl
Yaroslavl is one of the largest cities on the Golden Ring route. The city is located on the banks of the Volga, it is a large industrial and cultural center. Modern Yaroslavl is a dynamically developing city with many attractions and architectural monuments.
In Yaroslavl, the Volzhskaya embankment is especially beautifully designed - it is made pedestrian, tiled, and there are comfortable benches and lanterns throughout. On weekends, you can rent bicycles or roller skates on the embankment. The audience is very happy - there are a lot of cheerful and open people here, many go in for sports. Walking along the embankment, admiring the beautiful and wide Volga, steamships and boats passing by, is very pleasant, especially in the evening hours. If you walk along the embankment from the center, you come to the famous Yaroslavl Strelka - a gift from the Gazprom company to Yaroslavl for the 1000th anniversary of the city. There are fountains and comfortable benches on the turnout - this is a truly beautiful sight that is a must see! The evening promenade along the embankment and Strelka leaves a very pleasant impression - at the moment when the golden domes of the cathedral appear before your eyes in the rays of the setting sun, you fall in love with Yaroslavl!
Suzdal
Suzdal is a small, but perhaps the most popular and cozy city on the Golden Ring route. Suzdal has an incredibly attractive energy, a unique natural landscape, there are monuments of ancient Russian architecture of incredible beauty, and the locals are friendly and hospitable.
All attractions in Suzdal and architectural monuments are located nearby. It is convenient to walk around the city, leisurely admiring the beauty around. How beautiful are Suzdal streets with beautiful Russian huts, lovingly decorated with decorative elements!
It is best to start a walk around Suzdal with a visit to the Spaso-Efimeev Monastery. Its powerful walls and high towers are visible from afar and appear before you in all their splendor.
Plyos
Plyos, a small town on the Volga, became famous thanks to the artist Isaac Levitan. Back in 1887, Levitan was sailing on a steamboat along the Volga and unexpectedly saw these fabulous landscapes and fell in love with them once and for all. Indeed, you can admire the view of the Volga and the city endlessly... Levitan gave the world more than 200 paintings, sketches and sketches. There are many interesting places in Sochi that are worth visiting, for example, the Rosa Khutor resort on Krasnaya Polyana where the 2014 Winter Games were held, the Sochi Arboretum, the Yew-Boxwood Grove, the Southern Culture Park and the Olympic Park in the Imereti Valley. Since 2014, Sochi has hosted a stage of Formula 1 auto racing; this year the race will take place during the May holidays - an excellent opportunity to watch the competition in person!
The M4-Don highway is now a real wide autobahn and allows you to drive comfortably almost the entire distance from Moscow to Sochi. The journey will take you almost a day, so it’s worth planning your trip so that you can stop in the middle of the journey, for example, in Voronezh or Rostov-on-Don and gain strength.
There are several toll sections on the M4, this will require additional expenses In addition to gas and food, be careful and carefully consider the budget for your trip.
- Rosa Khutor resort. There are several on Krasnaya Polyana ski resorts, the most popular is Rosa Khutor, where the Winter Games were held. Thirty sets of Olympic medals were played here in fifteen sports disciplines. There are many hotels in the resort different classes and good infrastructure - many restaurants, cafes, shops and ski rentals, luggage storage. You can have a good time here even in the summer, doing sightseeing tour on the cable car or rent bicycles and ride along the mountain routes!

Going deeper into the forest, you will find yourself in a real jungle of preserved protected nature. A walk through the Yew-Boxwood Grove is a short hike that will take you 3-4 hours. But the time will not be wasted - the cleanest air, beautiful views, overcoming obstacles along the way - all this promises an exciting adventure!
4. Moscow
All roads lead to Moscow! The capital can be an interesting place to travel by car. Moscow has many interesting places - museums, theaters, exhibition centers. Since our report is about summer travel, we will focus on parks and other interesting places for city residents to relax. For a tourist who comes to the city to walk and relax, summer is the best time! Traditionally, summer is the time for vacations and the height of the dacha season. Many citizens are on vacation; the city has fewer traffic jams and is not so crowded.
The capital has good infrastructure - many hotels of different levels, shops and shopping centers, many parks and hiking trails. Of course, you should start exploring the city from Red Square and take a walk along Tverskaya Street and the Boulevard Ring.
- Gorky Park- a cult place for walking, playing sports and dancing! There are many cafes, the Garage cultural center, the open-air Pioneer cinema, dance classes and roller skating lessons. In summer you can play volleyball and sunbathe on the sun loungers.
- Muzeon Park— a beautiful, landscaped embankment with an exhibition-fair of artists’ works, cozy cafes and a bicycle path.
- View of the city from Children's World. The Children's World itself, which recently opened its doors after renovation, is also interesting, as is the wonderful view from the observation gallery on the top floor of the building.

- Filevsky Park- a modern park complex in the north-west of Moscow. When you get here, you can’t even believe that you are in one of the largest metropolises, it’s so quiet and peaceful here. The park is located along the embankment of the Moscow River, there is a real beach, many cafes, bicycle rentals and a rope park.
5. Estates of the Moscow region
An excellent option for those who do not have a lot of time, but want to escape from the bustle of the city, see historical places, listen to a guide and take a walk in nature. Freedom of movement in your own car, choice of route and exciting excursions - all this will turn a trip to the estate into an exciting adventure! There are many historical places and estates in the Moscow region, some are under reconstruction, some are difficult to access, but there are also some where you can freely come by car and take a tour and walk. So, we bring to your attention 3 estates in the north of the region: Muranovo, Abramtsevo and Serednikovo.
Muranovo Estate
The Muranovo estate is located 50 km from Moscow along the Yaroslavl highway. This is one of the most beautiful estates in the Moscow region with a rich history. The poet E.A. lived here for some time. Boratynsky. According to his drawings and plans, a house was built in Muranova, which has survived to this day. Also in Muranovo lived the family of the poet F.I. Tyutchev, whose family heirlooms and manuscripts were transported to the estate after his death. Thus, Muranovo became the main storage place for the legacy of the great Russian poet.
Abramtsevo Estate
The Abramtsevo estate is located 60 km from Moscow along the Yaroslavskoye Highway on the banks of the Vorya River. In 1843, Abramtsevo was acquired by the writer S. T. Aksakov, who created his best works here. Under Aksakov, the estate was visited by writers N.V. Gogol and I.S. Turgenev, historian M.P. Pogodin, actor M.S. Shchepkin, and other famous contemporaries.
Serednikovo Estate
The Serednikovo estate is located 20 km from Moscow in the Solnechnogorsok district of the Moscow region. In 1825, Serednikovo was acquired by Dmitry Alekseevich Stolypin, the brother of Mikhail Lermontov’s grandmother Elizaveta Alekseevna Arsenyeva. In 1829-1831, young Lermontov spent every summer in Serednikovo. The estate inspires the poet; during these years Lermontov experienced feelings of first love. In Serednikovo, Lermontov wrote seven poems, two dramas, and about a hundred poems.
6. Tula region
The Tula region is an excellent choice for traveling by car. There are many interesting sights here, the region is located near Moscow and, of course, excellent highways M2 and M4.
Yasnaya Polyana is perhaps the most beautiful place in Tula. The estate of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy is located here. Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy was born here on August 28, 1828; here he lived and wrote his most famous works: “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina.” You can take a tour of the L.N. Tolstoy House Museum and see the exhibition, which includes the original furnishings of the estate, the writer’s personal belongings, and his library (almost 22,000 books!). The furnishings in the L.N. Tolstoy house-museum have been left the same as the writer himself left it when he left Yasnaya Polyana forever in 1910.
In this beautiful park it is pleasant to walk along the winding paths, enjoying the beauty of nature. The park has a stable where you can watch horses grazing in a spacious paddock. Horses were Leo Tolstoy's passion and entered the writer's life in early childhood. He learned to ride a horse as a child. Tolstoy was an excellent rider, and he did not give up the habit of daily horseback riding until the end of his life. During the period of infatuation agriculture, in the 60s and 70s of the 19th century, Tolstoy even tried to breed his own breed.
On the road from Moscow to Tula in the Zaoksky district on the right bank of the Oka there is the beautiful Polenovo estate. The estate is located in the historical and artistic natural museum-reserve of the artist Vasily Polenov. The museum is always happy to see visitors who want to get acquainted with the work of V. D. Polenov, see with their own eyes the Oka expanses where the artist lived and worked, plunge into the traditions and comfort of Polenov’s estate, and take a deep breath clean air, filled with the aroma of a coniferous forest. The estate has a large area for both walking and horseback riding! There is a good restaurant serving Russian cuisine.
7. Karelia
The Republic of Karelia is a unique northern landscape, beautiful forest, hills, tundra, lakes, waterfalls, pine trees and rocks! Such beauty is worth making a trip for. The easiest way to get to Karelia is for residents of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region; from here to Karelia it is only a few hours by car. It takes longer to get from the Moscow region; this is a real trip of several days, for which you need to prepare in advance by planning your stopping places and overnight stays. Travelers from Moscow can be recommended to leave the Capital early, in which case you will arrive in St. Petersburg in the evening and will be able to relax and stroll around the evening city. After spending the night in St. Petersburg, you can, with fresh energy, set off in the morning in the direction of Priozersk along the P121 highway.
The first attraction worth visiting on the way to Karelia is the Korela fortress. This is a stone fortress in the city of Priozersk, on an island in the Vuoksa River, which played a significant role in the history of the Karelian Isthmus. The walls and towers of the fortress have been well preserved to this day; the Korela Fortress Museum of History and Local Lore is open. Here you can take a walk and take beautiful pictures against the backdrop of the fortress walls.
You can stay overnight in Karelia, for example, in the village of Lakhdenpokhya. There are many accommodation options here, and you can also rent a speedboat and take a ride along the skerries (small rocky islands separated by narrow straits and covering a significant part of the coastal sea strip). Even in summer, these places can be cool and windy, so it is better to stock up on warm clothes.
Perhaps the most beautiful place in Karelia is the Marble Canyon, located in the Ruskeala mountain park in the Sortavala region of Karelia. The length of the quarry from north to south is 460 meters, the width is up to 100 meters. Distance from the top point the sides of the quarry to its bottom - over 50 meters. St. Isaac's and Kazan Cathedrals are lined with marble from the canyon, and the window sills of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg are made.
Marble Canyon is a photographer's dream. Any photographer interested in landscape photography who finds himself in this place will be delighted, spend the whole day in the canyon, and don’t even try to hint to him that it’s time to go home - it will be simply unrealistic to pull him out of such beauty! Here you can also rent a boat and take an exciting boat trip, enjoying the fantastic views around.
8. Lake Seliger
An excellent choice for those who love outdoor recreation, fishing, sitting with friends by the fire and having an intimate conversation against the backdrop of nature! And how great it is to wake up in the morning and swim in the still cold water of the lake, walk barefoot on the grass with morning dew... oh, grace! If you take the organization of your vacation seriously, you can install a camp sauna, a generator, pull up an awning, and your vacation will turn from wild to comfortable and well-equipped!
On Lake Seliger there are many options for where to stay and set up a tent camp. For example, there are travel agencies offering holidays on the island, where you will be taken by motor boat. You don’t have to worry about your car—it will be in a guarded parking lot during your vacation.
9. Valdai Iversky Monastery
The Valdai Iversky Monastery is an Orthodox male monastery, one of three monasteries built on the initiative of Patriarch Nikon, along with New Jerusalem and the Cross. In 2008, the restoration of the monastery was completed; on January 12, the Patriarch celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Iveron Cathedral Church, before performing the rite of the Small Consecration of the Cathedral. After the liturgy, the Patriarch performed a prayer service, which was attended by Russian President V.V. Putin. In April 2008, a decision was made to gild the five domes of the Iveron Cathedral.
The monastery is located in a beautiful place on the Selvitsky island of Lake Valdai in the Valdai district of the Novgorod region, 10 kilometers from the city of Valdai. There is a road leading to the island, along which you can drive to the monastery, where there is a large, comfortable parking lot. A visit to the monastery and a walk through its territory will not leave you indifferent! This is a place with amazing strength and energy surrounded by nature of incredible beauty. Getting to the Iversky Monastery is equally convenient both from Moscow and St. Petersburg.
You can and should take photographs here - the local landscapes are beautiful in any weather. However, to take photographs, it is advisable to receive a blessing, and don’t forget to read how to do this upon entering. The authors were here at all times of the year, and filmed even on a cloudy January day with fog, rain and sleet. You should not take photographs inside the temple during the service and you should not take photographs of the monks. It is always better to ask permission and behave modestly and civilly.
10. Veliky Novgorod
Veliky Novgorod is one of the oldest and most famous cities in Russia; in 2009 it officially celebrated its 1150th anniversary. Veliky Novgorod is located on the Ilmen lowland, on the Volkhov River, 6 km from Lake Ilmen, 552 km northwest of Moscow and 200 km from St. Petersburg, which makes it an attractive holiday destination for residents of the two capitals. And in Novgorod there is something to see and where to relax. You should definitely visit the Novgorod Kremlin (Detinets), the Monument to the Millennium of Russia, the Cathedral of Sophia of the Wisdom of God, the Museum of Fine Arts and Yaroslav's Court. In the Novgorod Kremlin, you can go up to the observation deck on the watchtower under the cheerful name Kukuy, from where you can enjoy beautiful views of the city. It will also be interesting to take a boat trip along the Volkhov River, listen to a tour and enjoy the great city.
A few kilometers from Veliky Novgorod, on the southern shore of Lake Myachino, the Novgorod Museum of Folk Wooden Architecture Vitoslavlitsa is located. In the museum you can get acquainted with traditional folk culture. Vitoslavlitsy consists of four ethnographic zones, representing typical peasant estates with all outbuildings and small-scale architecture. Now on its territory there are 34 monuments of wooden architecture, of which 21 buildings are classified as cultural heritage sites federal significance. The museum hosts fascinating excursions, but you can buy a ticket on your own and take a walk around the museum and look inside the huts and towers. The territory of the museum is quite large, which turns its visit into an exciting walk.
Next to the Vitoslavlitsa Museum is the St. George's Monastery. During the princely and republican periods, the monastery was the richest, played a particularly important role in the political life of the city, served as a princely tomb and was the most important cultural center.
What might you need along the way?
Before a long trip, do not forget to make sure that the car is in good condition, check the oil level, brake fluid and pad wear. On the road, it is better to take a canister with a supply of gasoline, the most necessary tools And drinking water just in case.
